[Bug 1573325] [NEW] tutorial overlay doesn't go away

2016-04-21 Thread Ashton Scott Snapp
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Release: 16.04

Version of unity8 package: 8.12+16.04.20160323.2-0ubuntu1

Expected to happen: Guide overlay would pop up, I'd hover my mouse over
where it was telling me (the right of the screen), then it would either
go away or continue with the guide/tutorial/thing.

What happened: Guide overlay stayed on screen even when I hovered my
mouse over the right side of the screen and the multitasking interface
appeared.

tl;dr: IT WON'T GO AWAY.

I have now managed to get tkcvs working on my system by installing the
default tk package, (sudo apt-get install tk).

Note - I already had tk8.4 installed, but tkcvs would not run without

[Bug 1025527] [NEW] Dell Latitude E6410: 12.04 crashes when on battery

2012-07-16 Thread Ashton Fagg
Public bug reported:

When on battery power, my Dell Latitude E6410 freezes after a random
amount of time. It does not matter if it is a fresh boot, or coming out
of suspend. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, other times it does. The
screen completely freezes, I can't even move the cursor (nor can I
switch to a tty). The WiFi light blinks really fast, which makes me
think it could be a kernel panic. I am using the proprietary nVidia
drivers. I have never had this happen on AC power.

I read another bug report which suggested that Intel Speedstep may be at
fault. I disabled it in the BIOS and this doesn't make a difference.

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-06-17 Thread Ashton Fagg
This affects me too. Can confirm that disabling vertical sync helps.
Currently using a Dell Latitude E6410 with nVidia NVS3100M running
TwinView mode. Performance was utterly atrocious prior to this, with
periods where Compiz would hog a whole core. Disabling vertical sync
seems to make the machine run much quieter and cooler.

I have noticed this, particularly on low brightness settings. I
believe it is to do with the ambient light sensor, nothing sinister in
regards to drivers. However I too would welcome any information on
this.

[Bug 977646] [NEW] Screen won't enter power down

2012-04-09 Thread Ashton Fagg
Public bug reported:

The screen won't enter power down. It "blanks" (i.e. goes black but the
backlight is still on). I have configured this to happen automatically
after 10 mins of inactivity, however this doesn't work.

Also running xset dpms force off, suspend, standby will either cause it
to do the same thing, or it will flicker on and off a few times before
coming back on.

[Bug 516920] Re: gnome-do crashes when Preferences selected from menu

2011-04-18 Thread Ashton Kemerling
Aha, found my issue. I originally thought Arch didn't have libgnome-
desktop-2-11. Technically it doesn't, but it's provided by gnome-
desktop. Unfortunately I'm running gnome-desktop 3.0.0-1, so the same
bug will probably crop up on libgnome-desktop-3.

That being said, I feel like my issue should (or already is) a different
bug.

[Bug 351263] Re: package pacemaker None [modified: /var/lib/dpkg/info/pacemaker.list] failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/sbin/attrd_updater', which is also in package heartbeat

2009-04-28 Thread Max Ashton
This bug is mirrored upstream. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=488636

Cursory research into both heartbeat and pacemaker packages suggests
this issue is due to project split, which lead to some confusion between
filenames etc. According to http://www.linux-ha.org/HomePage , for
compatibility between heartbeat and pacemaker, it's required that we use
heartbeat v. 2.99.0. Until then, the deps will break pacemaker.

[Bug 89892] Re: Omnibook 6100 turns off or freezes during boot up

2008-11-02 Thread Dave Ashton
As the above, (misspelled), comment suggests, I've just installed 8.10,
(kernel 2.6.27-7), and the problem remains. I am using the M2.41 bios
mentioned above, so this doesn't appear to fix the problem.

My workaround for the problem is as follows:

1. Install using the text based alternate installer CD, (this doesn't crash
like the live CD).
2. Try to boot; this may take a few re-boots, mine boots about 25% of the time,
(see note below).
3. Once you are looking at the desktop, open a terminal and type 'gksudo
nautilus' to open the file manager with root access.
4. Navigate to the /lib/modules/2.6.nn-n-generic/kernel/drivers/char/hw-random/
and rename intel-rng.ko to intel-rng.ko.off.

Note: If you cannot get the system to boot at all in step 2, try this as
an alternative:

2. Boot from a live CD with an old kernel. I used Damn Small Linux, but I guess
an Edgy live CD may also work.
3. Rename the Intel-rng.ko file, as described above by ManfredBremen on
2007-08-23

You should now have a fully working system that boots every time.

One last thing, every once in a while, the regular Ubuntu updates will
include a new kernel; this too will need the Intel-rng.ko file renaming
as above. Just choose the older kernel version from the Grub boot menu,
and proceed from step 3 as before.

Good luck,

Dave

Re: [Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4

2008-06-27 Thread Ashton Batty
Yes, it probably would, though I don't think that is a major issue.
I think it is people taking it on, without realising how much work is
really required. Especially with the new P2 plugins system, simply
updating the old packages isn't enough.
My thoughts, if anyone wants to package Eclipse, start with just the
Eclipse Platform and JDT, release as early and frequently as possible,
and add plugin packages one at a time. Target only openjdk 6. And if
you change your mind, please let others know. There have been a
handful of people say they will start adopt Eclipse, and then are
never heard from again.

If you need first class Eclipse support/integration, use Fedora; They
have really put a lot of effort into Eclipse support.
I prefer Ubuntu over Fedora, and I am just going to stick with Eclipse
3.2 for another half year. I assume (hope) Ubuntu 8.10 will include
Eclipse 3.4

[Bug 139536] Can not start installer on daily livecd 20070913

2007-09-13 Thread Ashton Batty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Using gutsy-desktop-amd64.iso from 20070913, I can boot to a live desktop, but

/var/log/installer/debug just has the version number.

2007-08-27 Thread Ashton Batty
I'm still experiencing the bug (bugs?). Rarely it has connected without
any apparent problems, but most times it doesn't work. I haven't had the
time or the chance to explore the problems methodically. My last post
was the first of three times it has connected to the WPA2 network
successfully during the last fortnight.

[Bug 134408] Sound broken since 2.6.22-10 upgrade, on HP 6710b

2007-08-23 Thread Ashton Batty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

Since upgrading to 2.6.22-10, I have had a number of problems on my HP 6710b
laptop.
On boot the mute light is lit, and no sound plays through the laptop builtin
speakers.
In the gnome-volume-control program, I can unmute the sound, and then through
earphones only sound works.
If I press the mute button on the laptop, the sound will work through the
speakers, but volume control buttons no longer work, and after exactly 60
seconds, the laptop mutes again.
I can connect earphones, and they work fine.

There are now three volume controls in gnome-volume-control, Headphone, PCM,
and Speaker.
The gnome volume osd shows the reverse of the keyboard mute light, whenever the
mute button is pressed.,

[Bug 121439] Re: [Gutsy]Network Manager Applet can't connect wireless with ipw3945 driver

2007-08-13 Thread Ashton Batty
I managed to connect today. I did nothing special... I firstly failed to
connect to a unsecured network, but then after that failed, I tried the
WPA2 EAP-TTLS/PAP network, and it connected. NM still doesn't store
anything in the gnome-keyring, which seems broken in general. Will
investigate a bit more tomorrow, if I get the chance.

No luck for me either. Network manager still doesn't want to connect to
wpa2-enterprise network, (works fine in Fedora 7, so I know network
manager *can* do it). I never got the various workarounds to work
either, though I have not had trouble using wpa_supplicant manually.
I'll try again tomorrow after purging and reinstalling network-manager
et al, and using clean gconf.

[Bug 121439] Re: [Gutsy]Network Manager Applet can't connect wireless with ipw3945 driver

2007-07-30 Thread Ashton Batty
Using a HP 6710b with ipw3945. I can connect to an unsecured network,
but can not connect to a WPA2-Enterprise network.

Regarding Matt Donnelly's comment about 'any laptop these days can at
least use a cable': not always. At my university, student laptops are
only allowed to connect via wireless (and only with
WPA2-Enterprise/AES/TTLS/Pap... which means no connecting with 64bit
Vista either :p). ITS will not allow non-ITS managed machines to have
their MAC addresses registered for wired connection.

[Bug 128995] Re: G965 display blurry

2007-07-28 Thread Ashton Batty
I can't confirm the bug, but the GM965 (GMA X3100) has a similar problem
on Feisty, and probably any distro with pre 2.1.0 Intel graphics
drivers. The problem is that although the resolution is correct, a
scaling filter is still being applied, causing everything to become
slightly blurred. I haven't seen the problem with Tribe 3 on my laptop.
Maybe the drivers on the live CD are older.

[Bug 70014] Re: crashes when launched with 'spiftacity --replace' from terminal

2007-04-11 Thread Ashton Batty
Still happens for me, but only when GConf
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager key is set. Now also crashes
when launched from Run Application window, so possibly a different bug.
Probably not a relevant bug anymore considering current developments
with composited windows and eye candy.

Maybe spiftacity should be removed as a thoroughly obsolete,
unnecessary, and dead/unmaintained package. (It would have been nice to
see plain metacity with compositing for us simple people, but seems the
world is moving towards compiz and/or beryl for desktop compositing)
