however I fixed it with :

gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist ['all']

[Bug 652929] [NEW] maverick rc gnome-settings-dameon doesn't start

2010-10-01 Thread Cameron Braid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I have just installed a clean install of maverick rc

When I login to gnome, the panel isn't styled, and applications like
terminal show with a white background colour.

I looked in ~/.xsession-errors to see this :

** (gnome-settings-daemon:1684): WARNING **: You can only run one xsettings
manager at a time; exiting

** (gnome-settings-daemon:1684): WARNING **: Unable to start xsettings
manager: Could not initialize xsettings manager.

So I tried running it :

sudo gnome-settings-daemon --no-daemon

then the terminal changed to purple background, and the panel got its
theme

[Bug 652929] Re: maverick rc gnome-settings-dameon doesn't start

2010-10-01 Thread Cameron Braid
I'm sorry - but you can't just disregard everything that I stated just
because think the log indicates something different.

There is definately a bug here... otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to
come to launchpad. I just spent a few hours reinstalling maverick from
scratch to verify that this issue happens with the latest ISO image,
since I had the same issue with the beta release

Please re-read what i said, as it explains the issue I am experiencing.

It could quite possibly not be a bug in gnome-settings-daemon - however
i don't know where to start looking - please ask for more information
instead if dismissing this issue.

Yes, in the mysql client.

This also prevents CTRL-R for using reverse search over command history.

[Bug 451801] Re: some keys print characters instead of performing their actions

2009-10-15 Thread Cameron Braid
Well, whatever it is, it makes using mysql really difficult, since I
make heavy use of CTRL-R, DEL and CTRL-LEFT/RIGHT

This seems to me like a more important issue than 'Low' importance.

Is there any easy way for me to test mysql client with an older version
(say from jaunty) of the readline library ?

Would this mean patching and building from source ?

I'm tested grub2 on jaunty as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/Grub2Testing

I started with a separate hdd (ext3 partition) for /boot and managed to
get grub2 going via both a chainloading and a native setup.

Next I want to remove my /boot hard drive (since its an old noisy slow
drive) so I wish to boot from my root ext4 partition on LVM . Its
volume name is Ubuntu-jaunty

First I unmounted /boot and remounted it as /media/oldboot
Then I coppied everything from from /media/oldboot to /boot

I then tried to install grub2 into my first hard drive

[Bug 355018] Re: metacity keybindings for global commands don't work in compiz

ccms wasn't installed, so I installed that first.

The Commands plugin wasn't enabled, so I enabled that.

That fixed my issue.

I agree that the Commands plugin should be installed by default.

Re: [Bug 285821] Re: Would it be possible to install most files to a folder?

2008-10-20 Thread Cameron Braid
Another great extension could be to allow multiple source ISOs to be
selected, and create a boot menu to pick one of them

I don't know much about the differences between the layout of files on the
ISO and the USB, however if multiple ISOs can be made bootable with a single
USB partition, I'd be most happy.

one use case for this is to have a USB stick with both 32bit and 64bit
installers

Cheers

[Bug 47229] Re: Ubuntu's Grub unfriendly to other Linux distros

2008-06-09 Thread Cameron Braid
Tomod,

I don't know other distros handle this - I tend to only use ubuntu on my
desktop these days, usually using a few different versions at the same
time - to try out the dev version, betas etc..

I have a separate /boot partition which is not on LVM.

I have gone through the process of managing separate folders for each
linux installation, all in separate subfolders of my boot partition -
keeping their menu.lst file in their own folder
(/boot/gutsy/grub/menu.lst), and mounting the applicable boot partition
subfolder (/boot/gutsy) as /boot. Then I would have a
/boot/grub/menu.lst file that uses configfile directive to open the
menu.lst from the relevant subfolder. (/boot/gutsy-boot/grub/menu.lst)

This works, but is a pain since every time an OS updates grub, you have
to manually fix the generated menu.lst file.

I am of the opinion that grub should fix the need to do this. Grub is
only needed because people want to install multiple operating systems on
a single pc.. so, why then can't it just work ! I realise that grub2 is
in the works, and should support boot on lvm, and other such features,
so I hope it will also provide a means for linux install to work well
with others.

The workaround mentioned here

A better workaround is probably to put

2007-05-01 Thread Cameron Braid
@mlind

My installation was failing when I had configured an existing boot
partition /dev/hda3 to be mounted as /boot during the install process.

I ended up not explicitly configuring a /boot mount (so that /boot would
be a folder in the root partition) the installation worked.

Sorry, I didn't keep a copy of the install log.

It would be nice if the installer could save the install log to a http
server on the internet, or use an embedded http server to allow
accessing it over the network. I don't have a USB stick, and I should
probably buy a floppy disk one of these days :)

[Bug 105623] Re: udev rules missing from udeb

2007-04-26 Thread Cameron Braid
The same error is happening on my computer when using the alternative
installer for 7.04. I downloaded the alternative CD because it
explicitly stated that it supports LVM.

Within the installer, I chose manual partitoning, configure LVM, then
activate volume groups.

The installer seems to lock up showing a blank blue screen without any
indication that something is hapening.

I pressed ALT-F4 to view the log.

I am getting an error for each lvm logical volume that I have. Each one
takes about 3 minutes to timeout.

Apr 26 18:38:26 partman-lvm:Rendezvous with udev timed out for
'Ubuntu-edgyroot'; stat failed: No such file or directory

Once all logical volumes have timed out (21 minutes later) the installer
proceeded as normal. My logical volumes were activated and I could
choose one from the partition manager.

I created a new logical volume, then had to wait another 3 minutes for
it to timeout.

The nstallation proceeded as normal from this point on.
