[Bug 1968553] Re: Incorrect word used in welcome slideshow
Yes, the string in question is correct. Thank-you for taking the time to search for it in the source. It is difficult to cut-and-paste or return to it once you are installed, and have access to launchpad. Maybe I should make more use of pen and paper :-) :-) Am I correct then, in believing that the Kubuntu community is no longer one of the greatest teams in the open source community, but was one in the past. If the team wishes rather, to be modest, I suggest stongly the following phrase is used instead. "..of individuals who make up one of the great teams in the open source community.." The two changes "made-->make" and "greatest->>great" seems to me to be less of a sign of defeat, than the current wording implies. It will become a statement which cannot reasonably be questioned by any other external party. If there is some other hidden internal reason for the wording remaining as-is, I will have to be reconciled with the wording, but it will be with some decreasing pride in the current health of the Kubuntu open- source project I use, and have advocated for many years. I have always thought it was a typo, which was inadvertently made, and would someday be rectified with a chuckle when someone at Kubuntu noticed it. [Bug 1968553] [NEW] Incorrect word used in welcome slideshow
Public bug reported: CURRENT BEHAVIOR: The last screen of the welcome slideshow in the ubiquity install, states words to the effect: The Kubuntu development team WERE a leading team worldwide in the development of software [not the exact words quoted - capitalization for emphasis] EXPECTED BEHAVIOR: I would think that it should read: Kubuntu development team ARE . This might sound trivial, but it has bugged me over numerous Kubuntu releases, as I would like the team to think that they still ARE a world- class development team - as I believe they ARE. [Bug 1862015] Re: KVM switch problems
I had (have) the same problem and finally just gave up on 19.10 and reinstalled 19.04. I tried to do a clean install because the 'update' failed. Well, I did it again when I was notified that 19.04 would no longer be updated and was offered the ability to 'update', Once again the 'update' failed so I am left with the need to do a clean install which I can't do because 19.10 does not support computers that use a KVM. Fortunately I use the computer to learn so it is not an absolute necessity to have it running Ubuntu 19.10. I do appreciate all the work that the developers do as it gives me a chance to learn without spending a lot of money so I hate to complain. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1862015 Title: KVM switch problems To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1862015/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The author discusses the drawbacks here: https://github.com/jonathanio /update-systemd-resolved (one can still leak under certain circumstances, and we shouldn't only be concerned with the minority who realize this is even happening/a problem and who can hack together a workaround themselves). [Bug 1688018] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6
This is the *nastiest* bug I've ever encountered in the wild on my own in Linux (that has no good solution after this long). Package 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 has disappeared from the mirrors for Xenial (not that anyone should expect a normal user to go through the deep dive that is this subject, once one realizes what is happening). The cipher in use by AWS for Client VPN isn't available in OpenSSL within Trusty Tahr, so running an old Ubuntu distro is also not a viable solution for me. This is about as serious of a bug as I could think of, and we're almost two years in without it being addressed. Hate to be tin-foil-hatty, but this seems like the kind of thing that gets put into software as a result of government-agency interests. How many people around the world expecting their VPN to protect them while viewing content from outside of their nation state are DNS-leaking all over the place to their local ISP? How many companies are leaking private zone DNS names (which often reflect what's running on the target boxes, and would then include information that could be used as part of an attack vector) to their ISP? I understand how open source works, but most people (including me) don't have the ability to work effectively on this nuanced bug. What's the plan? Sorry to sound disgruntled, but I spent about a week on this (coming to terms with understanding the issue, and then trying a number of workarounds). Initially, I accused our CTO of running a broken VPN server (heh), because I could simply not believe that things didn't "just work" in Linux for this extremely common use case. So we don't support pushing "dhcp-option" for DNS in Linux. This works in Mac and in Windows. We need a working/easy way to update our DNS addresses upon connecting to/disconnected from a VPN that users can trust. Thank you. I ended up just installing it on my laptop and then transfering the drive to the desktop. You either need to perform the bios mode install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system partition to install in EFI mode. [Bug 1463120] Re: Failure to boot if fstab disk mounts fail
I can confirm this affects all Ubuntu >= 15.04 installations, including Ubuntu 16.04 (LTS). > I am reasonably sure that this is not a kernel issue but a boot script dependency issue... That's absolutely the case. Your intuition has not led you astray. > Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction? To no one's surprise, this is a high-level system.d issue rather than a low-level kernel issue. Ergo Ubuntu >= 15.04, the release at which Ubuntu switched from Upstart to system.d. This issue is a significant show-stopper, particularly for users on newer UEFI-based systems. Triggering this issue is disturbingly trivial on such systems. Explicitly editing the "/etc/fstab" file with superuser permissions is *NOT* required to trigger this issue. Formatting a single device with the builtin GUI-driven disk utility ("Disks") is all it takes. And when it takes, most users will have no recourse but to format their root filesystem and reinstall. Here's the use case my better half stumbled into this morning. During Ubuntu installation, users may elect to automount devices to arbitrary mountpoints when selecting a custom partition scheme. When this is done on UEFI-based systems, the resulting "/etc/fstab" entries resemble: UUID=050e1e34-39e6-4072-a03e-ae0bf90ba13a /home/waluigi/wah! ext4 defaults 0 2 If any such device is subsequently reformatted (e.g., via the stock "Disks" utility), that device's UUID will be arbitrarily changed, invalidating the UUID previously recorded for that device in "/etc/fstab". Everything will superficially appear to behave as expected. On the next reboot, however, the end user will be presented with the now-infamous Purple Screen of Death. No error messages (...human-readable or otherwise) will appear, obscuring the underlying issue. Attempting to login with "safe mode" fails. Attempting to login to a root terminal succeeds, albeit only after a few dispiriting rounds of graphical corruption and terminal cursors disappearing. If the user successfully navigates this shameful gauntlet of pain *AND* is sufficiently familiar with low-level system administration to navigate the crucible by geek fire that is the CLI, there still exists no explicit indication of the core issue. (Command-line-fu: why have you betrayed me?) No relevant warnings or errors appear in either "dmesg" or "journalctl" output *OR* in "/var/log" logfiles. The only clear indicator that I could grep across was a single line of "systemctl -a" output showing the status of some ignorable system service unit with a non-human-readable name to be "loaded inactive dead", which seemed dimly suspicious. Further hours of cursing and grepping yielded the final culprit. My precious sanity. I have less of it now. Non-tech-savvy users confronted with this problem will probably just vomit, format, and reinstall. As a Gentoo-hardened Disciple of the Command-line Faith with fifteen caffeine-addled years experience in Silicon Valley startup monoculture, I feel overly confident in betting that even the most battle-weary code warriors will hand in their Richard M. Stallman fan club memberships when face-planting into this epic fail. Consider escalating this issue's importance to at least "High" – possibly even "Critical." System.d's "NetworkManager.service" is the culprit. For reasons patently unclear to me [read: "Why I Hate system.d and You Should Too"], this service unconditionally transitively depends on the mountability of *ALL* automounts listed in "/etc/fstab" -- regardless of whether these automounts are actually used and hence required at startup. We can hopefully agree that "/home/waluigi/wah!" is a non-essential automount. Waluigi begs to disagree, of course. System.d's "/usr/lib/systemd/system-generators/systemd-fstab-generator" script appears to auto-generate one system service unit for each mountpoint listed in "/etc/fstab". The failure of even a single such unit is sufficient to bring the entire boot process to its RedHat- stained knees. The fragility of system.d was already legendary. This contemptible breakage only cements its well-deserved ill repute. For shame, Poettering. To be fair, this issue is the product of numerous cascading failures – including: * The failure of the stock "Disks" utility to detect and handle attempts to format UUID-style devices automounted by "/etc/fstab". On detecting such an attempt, this utility should either (in descending order of preference): * Globally search-and-replace the UUID field of all entries in "/etc/fstab" matching the offending device's prior UUID with the new UUID allocated for that device. In other words, "sed -i -e 's/^UUID=old-uuid/UUID=new-uuid' /etc/fstab". Always "sed". (Ideal.) * Display a non-fatal warning that formatting this device will probably render the entire system unbootable unless the user manually modifies "/etc/fstab", but permissively permit them to do it anyway. (Non-ideal, but this is Linux. Every user should have the right to

[Bug 837882] Re: Vim on Ubuntu is compiled without clipboard and xterm_clipboard support
I fully agree with Garnet. Vim's current package nomenclature is counter-intuitive, counter-productive, and arguably constitutes a bug. While there do exist use cases for a headless Ubuntu, I'd contend that those are largely edge use cases. For Ubuntu and like-minded GUI-centric Linux distros (e.g., Mint), non-headless desktop, laptop, and touch devices predominate. Given that, the average user has every expectation of a package named vim installing a fully featured CLI-specific version of Vim supporting the average working environment: the X11-based desktop metaphor, complete with clipboard and mouse integration. Since this is currently not the case, the current vim package should ideally be renamed as Garnet suggests (e.g., to vim-console) and a new vim package providing a fully featured CLI-specific version of Vim instated in its place. Thanks for your continued efforts, Ubuntu developers. It's gratefully appreciated. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/837882 Title: Vim on Ubuntu is compiled without clipboard and xterm_clipboard support To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vim/+bug/837882/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1289807] Re: User Accounts endless loop (never opens)

[Bug 490434] Re: keyboard input less responsive after screensaver fails to activate because of VirtualBox
I'm currently seeing this under Ubuntu 14.10. In my case, however, the issue is somewhat worse than that originally reported. Regardless of whether the guest image is idle or not, the keyboard in such guest becomes unreliably unresponsive exactly X minutes after (re)entering such guest, where: * Unreliably unresponsive means a seemingly random loss of roughly half of all keyboard input (as in the original report). * X is the currently configured inactivity time in the Ubuntu host (defaulting to 10 minutes), after which the host screen is blanked or a host screensaver run. Interestingly, this is correctable in the same manner as that originally reported. To reiterate, when a guest keyboard becomes unresponsive: 1. Return to the Ubuntu host from the guest VirtualBox image (e.g., by hitting Right-Ctrl). 2. At such point, Ubuntu immediately performs inactivity handling (e.g., screen blanking, screensaver running). 3. Stop such blanking or screensaver (e.g., by hitting any key). 4. Return to the guest VirtualBox image from the Ubuntu host (e.g., by clicking in the VirtualBox window for such guest). This is may not necessarily be a gnome-screensaver issue. I'm currently running Cinnamon 2.2 as provided by the canonical (horrible pun intended) 14.10 Ubuntu repositories. While I do have both cinnamon- screensaver and gnome-screensaver installed, the prior appears to currently take precedence. Intuitively, this feels like a lower-level upstream issue. My suspicions are that VisualBox is failing to notify the host X11 of the activity state of guest images *AND* that VisualBox is failing to preempt guest images on guest inactivity with the host X11 inactivity handler (e.g., screen blanking, screensaver running). It may be pertinent to note that the guest in question is OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Due to licensing concerns, Oracle has yet to offer a Guest Additions ISO for OS X VirtualBox guests, thus preventing use of Seamless Mode under such guests. Seamless Mode displays application windows running under guests as native windows running under the host, and is available for all non-OS X guests. Since virtualization of OS X is non-trivial (to say the least), most VirtualBox users are likely to run guests under the blatantly superior Seamless Mode. Does any this matter? Possibly not. My deepest suspicion, however, is that VirtualBox only fails to notify the host X11 of the activity state of guest images *NOT* in Seamless Mode – which would, of course, always be the case for OS X guests and only rarely the case for non-OS X guests. This could explain the lack of concurring reports for this bug. (Or this could explain nothing at all.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/490434 Title: keyboard input less responsive after screensaver fails to activate because of VirtualBox To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-screensaver/+bug/490434/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1268257] Re: nvidia-331-updates 331.38-0ubuntu3: nvidia-331-updates kernel module failed to build, with only error: objdump: '... .tmp_nv.o': No such file
This bug is horrible and must die. My base intuition concurs with Brian Norris' prior commentary. Quoted for truth: I suspect that there is some sort of race condition in the provided build scripts written by Nvidia, and they are only showing up intermittently or under particular system configurations/states, so package reinstallation tends to work fine the second time. Related: I see this comment in Nvidia's Makefile regarding the new build system in Linux = 2.6: # The new approach currently has its own share of problems, some of which # are architectural difficulties with KBUILD, others minor annoyances. For # this reason, an improved version of the NVIDIA Makefile is available to # those experiencing difficulties. So it sounds like they admit to having architectural difficulties here. I wonder where this improved version of the Makefile can be obtained... The difficulty of reliably reproducing this bug implies (however weakly) an upstream race condition. Given Nvidia's intransigence in addressing this, it remains Canonical's responsibility to supply a temporary downstream fix. This is rapidly becoming a community embarrassment – which, if left unresolved, could metastasize into mainstream media attention. (Of the variety we'd rather not have.) While a genuine solution is probably beyond our purview, the Ubuntu- specific nvidia packages could at least be refactored so as to grep the DKMS build log for the following offending lines and respond by attempting to silently reinstall such packages a second time: echo 2 ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid.; \ echo 2 include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing.;\ echo 2 Run 'make oldconfig make prepare' on kernel src to fix it.; \ Given that reinstalling such packages does appear to (mostly) succeed, automating such reinstallation could be of general assistance. Certainly, that's better than nothing – which woefully appears to be the current approach. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1268257 Title: nvidia-331-updates 331.38-0ubuntu3: nvidia-331-updates kernel module failed to build, with only error: objdump: '... .tmp_nv.o': No such file To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-331/+bug/1268257/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1289807] Re: User Accounts endless loop (never opens)
See reply #20 as to location of libwayland_ltst-client.so.0. That says In my case, libwayland_ltst-client.so.0 is not in my system. In fact it belongs to the package libwayland-ltst-client0 that is a Precise upgrade of the HWE to the Trusty stack. I upgraded from 12.04.5 - 14.04.1. So I cannot understand why libwayland_ltst-client.so.0 is being called. As further explanation, I upgraded the HWE stack while still on Precise. That had libwayland_ltst-client.so.0 as part of the package. When I upgraded to Trusty, that package was removed. However, it seems unity-control-center user-accounts still expects the package to be present as it is calling libwayland_ltst-client.so.0. [Bug 1357450] [NEW] gnome-panel fails to launch after Precise - Trusty upgrade
Public bug reported: I recently upgraded to Trusty 14.04.1 x64 from 12.04.5 x64. After upgrading, Although my system will boot and the desktop is created, the panels do not appear. I had to execute gnome-panel to get the panels to appear. I then added gnome-panel to my Startup Applications, and the panels now appear. This happens with Gnome-Flashback under both Metacity and Compiz. Additionally, I cannot edit my menus nor do all the menus appear. Sundry, System Tools, Utilities, Web Applications, and Wine show in Main Menu, but do not show in Applications Menu. If I add an item in Main Menu, it is added to Other no matter what menu I am trying to add it to. If I add a menu, it will not appear in Applications. I am attaching my main.log and history.log. [Bug 967262] [NEW] Video shows first frame, does not advance
Public bug reported: I have Ubuntu 11.10 x64 and Totem 3.3.90 that uses GStreamer 0.10.35. I can no longer play videos. When I double-click the file, the first frame of the video is displayed. [Bug 709778] Re: Libreoffice base form design doesn't show toolbars, can't show them
I upgraded to 11.04, added the Libreoffice PPA, and upgraded to LO 3.3.3 (1:3.3.3-iubuntu1). My LO Base forms fail as before. In fact, there is a change in their behavior, but it has to do with the order I enable the toolbars. I must follow the following steps in the indicated order to have my toolbars correctly displayed: (1) open form in Edit mode (no toolbars are displayed); (2) enter full screen mode (shift-control-j); (3) exit full screen mode; (4) select ViewToolbars; (5) check Standard; (6) select ViewToolbars; (7) check Form Navigation; (8) select ViewToolbars; (9) check Form Design; (10) select ViewToolbars; (11) check Form Controls. If I follow any other sequence, toolbars disappear. For example, if I check any of the above before checking Standard, when I check Standard, the other toolbars disappear. If I check Forms Controls before I check Forms Design, the Standards toolbar will disappear, etc. Additionally, if I follow the above sequence for a form, save it (either after changes or not), and exit the form, the toolbars are not saved. That is, when I open the form again, I have to repeat the above sequence to get the toolbars back. So in my environment with Ubuntu 11.04 and LO 3.3.3, this problem is not fixed. Perhaps I need to completely remove LO and re-install? Perhaps I need to get LO 3.3.3 debs and install? Perhaps I don't know how to get this fixed? [Bug 709778] Re: Libreoffice base form design doesn't show toolbars, can't show them
OK, I am a little confused as to whether this bug has been fixed, and , if so, in what release. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) x64 and LO 3.3.2. I first encountered this bug when I installed LO after removing OOo. I could get the toolbars by ViewFull Screen, exit Full Screen, and ViewToolbars, and checking the toolbars I wanted. I was able to get things working correctly by completely removing LO and reinstalling from the PPA. Now the problem is back, but I have a new monitor and my screen resolution has changed. It is now 1920 x 1080. It was 1024 x 768. I installed a new 22 monitor to replace my 19 monitor. My guess is that screen resolution is somehow related to this problem, both from my experiences and from this thread. All of that said, how do I get a version in which this bug has been fixed for my environment? Another comment: The performance issue is definitely related to the Sun Java version. I had to regress to Java 1.6.21 to get rid of the performance problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/709778 Title: Libreoffice base form design doesn't show toolbars, can't show them To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/df-libreoffice/+bug/709778/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 693450] [NEW] Openoffice Base error when adding a subform record
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org I am using Ubuntu x64 and Openoffice 3.2.1 with MySQL databases. I have forms with subforms that have been working since Ubuntu 9.04. After upgrading to 10.10 from 10.04, the following situation occurs with all databases and subform entries: When adding or modifying a record in a subform, the following message is displayed: Error inserting record No value specified for parameter 1 Selecting more gives: SQL Status: 07001 No value specified for parameter 1 If I choose OK, the error reoccurs. If I change focus from that subform to the form or another subform, the error reappears. If I choose X to exit the error message and exit the form without saving it, when I reopen the form, the subform record(s) is/are there. I get a duplicate record for each time I exit the message popup with OK or change focus to the form or another subform. As I said, this behavior happens with all forms and MySQL databases when attempting to add or modify a subform record. I can delete subform records with no problems, and I can add, modify, and delete form records with no problems (assuming appropriate cascade options are set in the databases). This behavior was not present in Ubuntu 10.04 and Openoffice 3.2.0 or any releases prior. [Bug 290498] Re: linux-rt restricted to one CPU
Using RTD's tutorial I was able to build 2.6.29.5-rt21 for my 9.04 system. (AMD 64 bit). I had one problem and it's doozy. It died in the very last step of the build because I had the nvidia drivers (non free). The kernel would boot and run (but a few things didn't work). It took a lot of hacking around to get rid of *all* of the nvidia artifacts so that syslog/messages/X.log didn't have errors. My advice is that if you have propriety drivers and you want to build a custom kernel, that you remove all the proprietary drivers before building the kernel. Then you can figure out how to get the proprietary drivers re-installed. Actually, my first thought would be to not build a custom kernel if you have proprietary drivers but if you do, you better know your dpkg and looking at the log files in recovery mode. -- linux-rt restricted to one CPU https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/290498 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
