[Bug 1896918] Re: Upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 not working

2020-09-25 Thread Christine
Thank you for the suggestion Daniel. I used Synaptic Package Manager to
search for nodejs. Four entries were found (nodejs, -dev, -doc and
-mozilla) but when I right-clicked on each entry, it said "mark for
installation". Also, there is nothing listed under "installed version".
So I assume there aren't any nodejs packages installed. Or is there
another way to find them, I'm not aware of? Like through terminal
commands.

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to
investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will
contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and

[Bug 1849824] [NEW] Cup over usb does not print to Brother J6530DW

2019-10-25 Thread Christine Hyde
Public bug reported:

I've tried everything I can find on the internet and on Ubuntu. Nothing
works: changing parameters as per instructions, no go. cat text
>/dev/usb/lp0 does not work either. Using cups the printer remains
steadfastly inactive. "Catting" wakes up the printer to indicate data is
received but nah.

The alternative ppd for printing over the network *works* however.

The usb cable is good: scanning works from Ubuntu.

I've upgraded oldish HP DM3 laptop to a ThinkPad T495s (nice machine)
but still stuffed for usb printing with this machine. (My old HP had no
issues)

[Bug 1212987] Re: Unity not starting after boot

2015-10-29 Thread Christine Jones
Same issue here -- have had this happen to me 4 times in the last 6
months. First two times I thought it was me and reformatted computer -
and reinstalled from scratch. (Thank God I run backups!)

Last month I had my son (Unix guy in the next state over) help me via
phone -- and were able to restore from simply running the commands to
update, then install, reinstall desktop -- then install unity -- worked
fine I kept the steps just in case...

then it happened again - I logged into my pc and was working fine on
Tuesday -- didn't log in on Wednesday till the evening - at which time
the computer had gone to sleep - when I tried to login my unity and
menu's were gone... I checked all the recommended steps via the
ask.ubuntu site to no avail... I'm still not getting my unity or menu

I am able to bring up a gui with my directory structure, so I went into
usr/share/applications and found that I could launch applications from
that - therefore I'm able to access a browser and get to this site.

Wondering when this issue is gonna get fixed -- and why does this site
say it' only affects 9 users???That's crap - I cannot be only 1 of
9 other people must not be logging in the issue...

Can I get some help here?

2014-07-16 Thread Christine
Thank you for that. That file was definitely correct before I started the
upgrade. Somehow all the details were erased during the upgrade. I have
fixed the information and will attempt the upgrade again and will let you
know if it fails again.

Thanks again.

[Bug 758877] [NEW] S-S fails to scan

2011-04-12 Thread Christine Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: simple-scan

Clicking on Scan brings up an error message 'Failed to scan'. If I then
click on 'Change Scanner' the Scan Source is shown as 'Epson CC-570L
whereas the model is Epson CX3200. There seems to be no possibility of
changing this entry. The Epson appears to be otherwise correctly
installed: ie I have no problem printing documents.

[Bug 750372] [NEW] Simple Scan does not start from application panel

2011-04-04 Thread Christine Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: simple-scan

Am trying to scan a page of text using an Epson CX3200. When I open Simple
Scan from the applications toolbar, then click on 'scan' , I see a screen
indicating that this is in process (cycling dots), but nothing further happens.
When I cancel the process I get a message stating 'Simple Scan is not
responding'.
I am currently able to print using the Epson, and I have been able to scan
previously using Simple Scan.
Can you please advise?
Ray

[Bug 731865] [NEW] Adobe Reader plugin cannot be disabled

2011-03-09 Thread Christine Liebig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I had disabled the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox, but with a recent
Firefox update (now 3.6.15) it was re-enabled. I disabled it again, but
now every time I restart Firefox it is re-enabled.

My content-type preference for PDF type documents is set to Always Ask
and I always prefer opening the file in Evince over having to read it
within the browser.

The bug seems to be related to issues mentioned in Bug #481542, but is
not a duplicate.

2010-10-25 Thread Christine G.
I am not sure if this is even related. I have received in the past the
above error verbatim. But the last few weeks I've been getting various
errors that start out: *** glibc detected *** /usr/sbin/apache2:

usually what this results in is apache delivering a blank page (until I
restart apache) or like the above - it segfaults but still delivers
pages however I have an increase in processes until it's out of control
and I have to kill them and restart apache.

Attached is my error log for most recent error (a snippet).

I can't tell if it's really apache or php (found this:
http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=49209 but it's not for my version of php
but I do see that error too)

Here's some other info:

Subject: [Bug 603054] [NEW] MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC

Public bug reported:

i would to clarify all of this and i am sorry for the confusion, this is
my problem in a nutshell. MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-
APIC is my big issue now. my toshiba satilite laptop will not stay on
for more than a few seconds and i do not have a SATA hard drive
installed because it took a dive a while back.

so it is:

1. no HDD installed of any sort at the moment.

friend did not believe me that it was broke and put into my laptop and
punched a few keys and now it will not stay on for more than a few
seconds which in turn will not allow me to make any sort of changes to
anything. so i guess i am going to have to get a new hard drive and
install it first before i can move in any direction with this laptop.

i also need a flash drive to install anything to make the new os to begine with

the micro
sd card i have is not big enough and i cannot keep this toshiba to stay on long

enough to get to the internet and do anything.

i guess if you have a better solution please let me know

thank you

Presumably, the objection is to the overhead on the user's system. This was
 also explicitly demoted in
20091024-1ubuntu1 by Steve Langasek before working its way back into Debian.

Any thoughts on how to proceed? I personally lean towards this being a

The audioscrobbler plugin for Quod Libet depends on the Python bindings for
LastFM, but these aren't installed by quodlibet-plugins. In order to get this
plugin working, one must also install lastfmsubmitd.

Perhaps it'd be a good idea to pull the lastfm bindings into a separate
package that both lastfmsubmitd and quodlibet-plugins depend on?

There are actually currently *two* plugins in Quod Libet
for submitting to Last.fm / using the audioscrobbler
protocol. Only one of them requires the lastfmsubmitd
daemon. I believe upstream is at least considering
deprecating the one that uses the daemon.

cheers,

Laptop: Acer TravelMate 290 (292LCi to be more specific).
Graphics: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated
Graphics Device
Kernel: 2.6.32-22

Progress report:
I have now successfully upgraded from Hardy. I followed the instructions for
Workaround A at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes and Lucid boots
fine now, but playing videos causes an X freeze and Desktop effects can not be
enabled. (One time selecting desktop effects caused a funny error: after a bit
of flickering the screen went back to normal, but all letters in menus were no
longer from the latin character set, but some unknown set (could have been Thai
as far as I can say, but maybe just a random mix). However, judging from the
lengths of words it was still in the English language setting and I was able to
recognise the logout option. Logging out and in again put everything back to
normal. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the bug.)

Following Steve's instructions, i.e. permanently setting the boot option
i915.modeset=1 in the /boot/grub/menu.lst, gives exactly the same
result.

X freezes whenever I start a video (e.g. using the example-content video
UbuntuIsHumen.ogv with Totem Movie Player, but also with a random .avi
and xine). Flash videos with Firefox are fine. Movie Plazer with sound
files also works fine.

2010-05-06 Thread Christine Liebig
@ Peter: Actually, today's update (sorry, don't know which package)
fixed things with Totem Movie Player, but xine was still reporting
segmentation faults, so I installed the mainline kernel and, indeed, it
completely fixed the video problems. Thanks for pointing that out again!

Unfortunately, I still have problems using an external monitor, but that
might be a quite unrelated bug. I can switch the external monitor on,
but not off, and inevitably things crash/freeze when I'm changing
Monitor settings.

I was (and still am) really disappointed that the 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)
Live CD does not work beyond the first installation screen (with
keyboard and human icon at the bottom), after which it just goes blank,
aptly named the purple screen of death in the forums. This is the
first time an Ubuntu (Stable Release) Live CD does not work 'as
downloaded' for me.

I was able to workaround, following the instructions of Solution 2 at
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-fix-ubuntu-10-04-lts-lucid-blank-
screen-at-startup.html i.e. with adding i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa to
the startup command and after that the Live CD performed as would be
expected.

I am unsure about upgrading now. This would be from 8.04 LTS (Hardy
Heron). Are there any plans for a repaired Live CD?

[Bug 70064] Re: Acer TravelMate 290: Fn + F5 (CRT/LCD) cause crash-down

2009-11-10 Thread Christine Liebig
Hi Bryce,

I have since upgraded to Hardy 8.04 LTS and the behaviour of the keys
Fn + F5 (CRT/LCD) is quite different now:

 1) There is no crash anymore.
 2) When pressing once, the external screen is swichted on in addition to the
laptop screen, but has some flickering noise.
 3) When pressing a second time, the laptop screen is swichted off, and the
external screen works perfectly.
 4) After that I cannot switch on the laptop screen anymore. I tried by
repeatedly pressing Fn + F5 (CRT/LCD), and by using the command sudo
i810switch lcd on, but I cannot switch on the graphic display anymore without
restarting the computer.

Another issue (maybe unrelated) is the following: In mirror screen mode
I use the command sudo i855crt on 1024x...@60 which removes the
flickering, BUT (and this completely puzzles me) on the external display
a small (~1%) either white or black square appears in the top left
corner that cannot be removed.

I can try to provide more information, if you tell me what could be of
interest.

Please also inform me, if this should be filed elsewhere...

[Bug 150334] Re: Workspaces only in 1 row although set to be in 2 rows

2008-05-06 Thread Christine Liebig
Just want to point out that the bug still persists in Hardy. I have two
workspace switchers with settings to 6 workspaces in 2 rows. Reproducably, one
of them changes settings to just 1 row after rebooting.
I can remove it from the panel and add again with new (=old) settings, but
after rebooting or hibernating it goes back to 1 row.

I have upgraded from Dapper, where it was working fine.

I don't know which other info might be relevant, but I'm not using any
desktop effects and brightside is not installed.

I was doing the upgrade from edgy to feisty. It was in the last stage of
the upgrade where it was cleaning up temporary files (I think). The
install did seem to work despite the crash - after a reboot I seem to be
on the latest version.

[Bug 99351] Re: gnome-panel crashes on package install

2007-03-31 Thread Christine Slotty
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 85776 ***

I had this error today, too, but I guess it's needless to report another
bug ;-)

I had it during installation of nfs-kernel-server and couldn't quite see
the correlation. But as I'm reading, it has to do with the installation
of any packages, and that's when it happened to me today (system being
up-to-date).

[Bug 91405] Re: fails to setup dm-crypt key mapping. (2:1.0.4+svn26-1ubuntu1~edgy1)

2007-03-31 Thread Christine Slotty
I'm having the same problem in feisty.

What I did and the error message:

 cryptsetup luksFormat /dev/sda2

WARNING!

Daten auf /dev/sda2 werden unwiderruflich überschrieben.

Are you sure? (Type uppercase yes): YES
Enter LUKS passphrase:
Verify passphrase:
Failed to setup dm-crypt key mapping.
Check kernel for support for the aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 cipher spec and verify
that /dev/sda2 contains at least 133 sectors.
Failed to write to key storage.
Aufruf fehlgeschlagen.

All modules are loaded, like aes, dm_crypt and dm_mod.

The funny thing is that yesterday I had the same problem when trying to
mount a crypt-formatted USB disk. Yesterday it didn't work, today it
did! Now my USB disk is mounted, but I am not able to cryptsetup
luksFormat an internal HD partition

syslog says:

Mar 31 16:01:02 hpsupercompi kernel: [ 8515.14] device-mapper: table:
254:1: crypt: Device lookup failed
Mar 31 16:01:02 hpsupercompi kernel: [ 8515.14] device-mapper: ioctl: error
adding target to table
Mar 31 16:01:02 hpsupercompi kernel: [ 8515.144000] device-mapper: ioctl:
device doesn't appear to be in the dev hash table.

My version is the same as stated in the title, but without the ~edgy1
at the end. (it's in feisty, universe/admin)

This seems to be the only show-stopper for using feisty as productive
version. (which is not recommended, I know, but I love some of the
new features, that's why I'm trying...)

2007-03-31 Thread Christine Slotty
CORRECTION OF THE ABOVE
*blush* My fault. in feisty I don't have any errors anymore, I just thought
it was an error, but everything works fine (uhm, I used the wrong partition...)

I guess I thought it was an error because actually I _did_ have that
external disk error yesterday, but it's really fixed today.

[Bug 94043] Panel doesn't work correctly or show up at all with nvidia drivers and twinview

2007-03-20 Thread Christine Slotty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I can't say how exactly to reproduce this bug, I can only describe my
configuration:

- nvidia driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run (downloaded from nvidia
directly)
- Ubuntu Dapper
- a twinview setup, I'll see if I can attach my xorg.conf in this bug report

Now my problem is: Sometimes I switch configurations, going back to
single monitor, since I don't always have a second monitor at my
disposition. Then obviously the panel gets confused, because locations
don't exist anymore - and I haven't found out yet how exactly locations
on the screen are being named. When I have the panel on my laptop
(=first) screen during twinview setup and I switch to single view setup
the panel doesn't show anymore or in a different place.

Additionally, most of the time I have the effect that the panel does
show but cannot be resized or moved anymore, like right now. I will
attach a screenshot.

Where/how can I look up gnome-panel errors/loggin!? I could make a gdb
printout, I guess.

[Bug 94043] Re: Panel doesn't work correctly or show up at all with nvidia drivers and twinview

2007-03-20 Thread Christine Slotty
In the screenshot I made a circle around the gnome-panel I'm talking
about.

As you can see, its size is a lot smaller than it should be, it doesn't
show everything it contains. Additionally, no matter what I set the
settings to, it won't resize. And I can't move it, either. When I grab
the handles with my mouse the hand-mouse pointer won't show.

[Bug 82901] Re: crashed on deleting mail from yahoo email address

2007-02-02 Thread Christine McCready
Hi Alex,

I think I attached the the file from /var/crash. I will do it again.

This has happened before, but I usually say do not send report. I
figured I did something wrong. It does not happen all the time. It
usually works. Next time I will pay more attention.

I am new to Ubuntu. I just started using it mid-January, 2007 when my
nephew installed it to replace Windows98 (which had stopped working
properly) on my Compaq Presario. He thought I should use my brain and
try something new.

Thanks for any help.

Christine
