[Bug 1896918] Re: Upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 not working
Thank you for the suggestion Daniel. I used Synaptic Package Manager to search for nodejs. Four entries were found (nodejs, -dev, -doc and -mozilla) but when I right-clicked on each entry, it said "mark for installation". Also, there is nothing listed under "installed version". So I assume there aren't any nodejs packages installed. Or is there another way to find them, I'm not aware of? [Bug 1849824] [NEW] Cup over usb does not print to Brother J6530DW

[Bug 1212987] Re: Unity not starting after boot
Same issue here -- have had this happen to me 4 times in the last 6 months. First two times I thought it was me and reformatted computer - and reinstalled from scratch. (Thank God I run backups!) Last month I had my son (Unix guy in the next state over) help me via phone -- and were able to restore from simply running the commands to update, then install, reinstall desktop -- then install unity -- worked fine I kept the steps just in case... then it happened again - I logged into my pc and was working fine on Tuesday -- didn't log in on Wednesday till the evening - at which time the computer had gone to sleep - when I tried to login my unity and menu's were gone... I checked all the recommended steps via the ask.ubuntu site to no avail... I'm still not getting my unity or menu I am able to bring up a gui with my directory structure, so I went into usr/share/applications and found that I could launch applications from that - therefore I'm able to access a browser and get to this site. Wondering when this issue is gonna get fixed -- and why does this site say it' only affects 9 users???That's crap - I cannot be only 1 of 9 other people must not be logging in the issue... [Bug 731865] [NEW] Adobe Reader plugin cannot be disabled
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox I had disabled the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox, but with a recent Firefox update (now 3.6.15) it was re-enabled. I am not sure if this is even related. I have received in the past the above error verbatim. But the last few weeks I've been getting various errors that start out: *** glibc detected *** /usr/sbin/apache2: usually what this results in is apache delivering a blank page (until I restart apache) or like the above - it segfaults but still delivers pages however I have an increase in processes until it's out of control and I have to kill them and restart apache. Attached is my error log for most recent error (a snippet). I can't tell if it's really apache or php (found this: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=49209 but it's not for my version of php but I do see that error too) Here's some other info: apache2: Installed: 2.2.14-5ubuntu8 Candidate: 2.2.14-5ubuntu8 Version table: *** 2.2.14-5ubuntu8 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status php5: Installed: 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.2 Candidate: 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.2 Version table: *** 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.2 0 500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 5.3.2-1ubuntu4 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages I apologize, ahead of time, if this is in the wrong place. I followed the instructions for Workaround A at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes and Lucid boots fine now, but playing videos causes an X freeze and Desktop effects can not be enabled. (One time selecting desktop effects caused a funny error: after a bit of flickering the screen went back to normal, but all letters in menus were no longer from the latin character set, but some unknown set (could have been Thai as far as I can say, but maybe just a random mix). However, judging from the lengths of words it was still in the English language setting and I was able to recognise the logout option. Logging out and in again put everything back to normal. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the bug.) Following Steve's instructions, i.e. permanently setting the boot option i915.modeset=1 in the /boot/grub/menu.lst, gives exactly the same result. X freezes whenever I start a video (e.g. using the example-content video UbuntuIsHumen.ogv with Totem Movie Player, but also with a random .avi and xine). Flash videos with Firefox are fine. @ Peter: Actually, today's update (sorry, don't know which package) fixed things with Totem Movie Player, but xine was still reporting segmentation faults, so I installed the mainline kernel and, indeed, it completely fixed the video problems. Thanks for pointing that out again! Unfortunately, I still have problems using an external monitor, but that might be a quite unrelated bug. Laptop: Acer TravelMate 290 (292LCi to be more specific). Graphics: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device I was (and still am) really disappointed that the 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) Live CD does not work beyond the first installation screen (with keyboard and human icon at the bottom), after which it just goes blank, aptly named the purple screen of death in the forums. This is the first time an Ubuntu (Stable Release) Live CD does not work 'as downloaded' for me. I was able to workaround, following the instructions of Solution 2 at http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-fix-ubuntu-10-04-lts-lucid-blank- screen-at-startup.html i.e. with adding i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa to the startup command and after that the Live CD performed as would be expected. I am unsure about upgrading now. This would be from 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron). Are there any plans for a repaired Live CD? -- [i855] X doesn't start with kernel 2.6.32-21 unless passing i915.modeset=1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/566379 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 70064] Re: Acer TravelMate 290: Fn + F5 (CRT/LCD) cause crash-down
Hi Bryce, I have since upgraded to Hardy 8.04 LTS and the behaviour of the keys Fn + F5 (CRT/LCD) is quite different now: 1) There is no crash anymore. 2) When pressing once, the external screen is swichted on in addition to the laptop screen, but has some flickering noise. 3) When pressing a second time, the laptop screen is swichted off, and the external screen works perfectly. 4) After that I cannot switch on the laptop screen anymore. I tried by repeatedly pressing Fn + F5 (CRT/LCD), and by using the command sudo i810switch lcd on, but I cannot switch on the graphic display anymore without restarting the computer. Another issue (maybe unrelated) is the following: In mirror screen mode I use the command sudo i855crt on 1024x...@60 which removes the flickering, BUT (and this completely puzzles me) on the external display a small (~1%) either white or black square appears in the top left corner that cannot be removed. I can try to provide more information, if you tell me what could be of interest. Just want to point out that the bug still persists in Hardy. I have two workspace switchers with settings to 6 workspaces in 2 rows. Reproducably, one of them changes settings to just 1 row after rebooting. I can remove it from the panel and add again with new (=old) settings, but after rebooting or hibernating it goes back to 1 row. I have upgraded from Dapper, where it was working fine. [Bug 94043] Panel doesn't work correctly or show up at all with nvidia drivers and twinview
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel I can't say how exactly to reproduce this bug, I can only describe my configuration: - nvidia driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run (downloaded from nvidia directly) - Ubuntu Dapper - a twinview setup, I'll see if I can attach my xorg.conf in this bug report Now my problem is: Sometimes I switch configurations, going back to single monitor, since I don't always have a second monitor at my disposition. Then obviously the panel gets confused, because locations don't exist anymore - and I haven't found out yet how exactly locations on the screen are being named. When I have the panel on my laptop (=first) screen during twinview setup and I switch to single view setup the panel doesn't show anymore or in a different place. Additionally, most of the time I have the effect that the panel does show but cannot be resized or moved anymore, like right now. I will attach a screenshot. Where/how can I look up gnome-panel errors/loggin!? I could make a gdb printout, I guess. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Panel doesn't work correctly or show up at all with nvidia drivers and twinview https://launchpad.net/bugs/94043 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 94043] Re: Panel doesn't work correctly or show up at all with nvidia drivers and twinview
In the screenshot I made a circle around the gnome-panel I'm talking about. As you can see, its size is a lot smaller than it should be, it doesn't show everything it contains. Additionally, no matter what I set the settings to, it won't resize. And I can't move it, either. When I grab the handles with my mouse the hand-mouse pointer won't show. ** Attachment added: twinview screenshot http://librarian.launchpad.net/6873751/twinview.png -- Panel doesn't work correctly or show up at all with nvidia drivers and twinview https://launchpad.net/bugs/94043 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 82901] Re: crashed on deleting mail from yahoo email address
Hi Alex, I think I attached the the file from /var/crash. I will do it again. This has happened before, but I usually say do not send report. I figured I did something wrong. It does not happen all the time. It usually works. Next time I will pay more attention. I am new to Ubuntu. I just started using it mid-January, 2007 when my nephew installed it to replace Windows98 (which had stopped working properly) on my Compaq Presario. He thought I should use my brain and try something new. Thanks for any help. [Bug 70064] Acer TravelMate 290: Fn + F5 (CRT/LCD) cause crash-down
Public bug reported: Reproduce by pressing special function key Fn plus F5. All other hotkey work just fine on my laptop with Dapper (6.06). What the key should do: Switch between external monitor, laptop display and both. Key code: Unfortunately, I'm not able to retrieve the key code. Method 1 (Keyboard Shortcuts) and Method 3 (sudo tail -f /var/log/acpid) are both followed by a crash-down when I press the critical key. Method 2 (sudo showkey -u | tee -a hotkey-log.txt in the console) doesn't give any useable output, but exits with an error message.
