[Bug 1175123] [NEW] Media key events duplicated or ignored

2013-05-01 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

I loaded rhythmbox by clicking its name in the sound menu, and press my
multimedia keyboard play/pause button - this works fine and a song
starts playing. Pressing the play/pause button a second time also works
as expected, pausing the track.

However, pressing play/pause a third time doesn't start the song again, but
either:
 1. does nothing, and the whole rhythmbox interface becomes unresponsive,
 2. starts the song again, but starts another song as well - two songs playing
at the same time (or possibly the same song at different positions in the song)
 3. Skips several tracks, before maybe playing one.

Possible relevant segment of `rhythmbox -d` output when play/pause not
restarting song:

[Bug 1010370] [NEW] Crash: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffff88025cd79068 (kmem_cache_alloc_trace)

2012-06-08 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

Had just logged in, started xfreerdp, firefox, nautilus and a terminal.
Then X went away, returning to say there was a problem and ask if I
wanted to run in basic graphics - then froze.

I Alt-F1'd to a console and dumped dmesg to the attached file, tried to
switch back to X and couldn't. Further input just produced junk
characters in the console.

headers-3.5.0-999-generic_3.5.0-999.201206080406_amd64, but - as I don't
know any way to trigger the bug on demand - I'm not sure I can actually
verify whether the bug is present or not.

[Bug 915371] [NEW] Randomly breaks mouse and keyboard input

2012-01-12 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

Occasionally, my X session stops accepting mouse clicks and keyboard presses
(although the mouse cursor will still move)
 I can't interact with the PC, and have to power-cycle to continue working.

This only happens when I'm running a LibreOffice program (most recently
calc).

I'm running Xmonad, so it's possible that the problem lies in using them
together.

[Bug 915371] Re: Randomly breaks mouse and keyboard input

2012-01-12 Thread Dave-B
I temporarily switched to Unity and the same problem occurred, so it's
probably not Xmonad-related.

I know I'm not on the latest Ubuntu version, but wanted to report this
so there's at least this record of it. I'll report back after I upgrade.

[Bug 820375] [NEW] Lockup when switching video modes

2011-08-03 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

With the mapping of Super+P to video
mode(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-
daemon/+bug/694910) I have unintentionally switched video modes several
times and, whilst cycling through the modes to get back to my original
setting, the system crashes, being unresponsive over a pre-existing ssh
connection, with audio playback looping over the last couple of seconds
of playback, and no reaction to keyboard input - except for holding down
the power button for several seconds.

Now I think about it, I haven't tried the sysreq magic yet - I will do
on the next one - but the crash exists, and I can reproduce by cycling
video modes with Super+p.

[Bug 820375] Re: Lockup when switching video modes

2011-08-03 Thread Dave-B
I'm pretty sure it always happens on the fourth press (a fifth press
should return to the initial state), when going from laptop screen on
and external off to both screens off. If I find it happens at a
different point, I'll come back and say.

The crash doesn't always happen, so sometimes I can cycle through all
the states several times before it will crash.

The attached file shows the output of xrandr before pressing super+p,
and for each of the 5 presses it takes to get back to the original state
with both screens on at full resolution (when it works).

** Attachment added: xrandr output through super+p states

[Bug 763247] Re: Overlay ScrollBar not easily findable in a large document

2011-06-16 Thread Dave-B
I agree with OP and comment #1.

Another possibility is, when the cursor approaches the scrollbar edge,
to show a traditional scrollbar with the scrolling thumb in a
(semitransparent?) scroll channel. Clicking in the channel would page
up/down the document, per traditional scrollbars.

activity, which starts a new period of that activity - losing that would
be annoying.

[Bug 742481] [NEW] Cheese won't record video

2011-03-25 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cheese

I can take pictures and see live video preview but, on clicking the
record button, the video display goes black momentarily, and returns
with a still image.

A .ogv file is created in ~/Videos/Webcam, but never gets filled with
data.

On clicking the stop recording button, the button depresses - but Cheese
doesn't exit the recording state, menus don't respond, and clicking the
window decoration close doesn't won't, so I have to Force quit.

[Bug 615077] Re: [Maverick] SDL local window broken in last update

2011-02-04 Thread dave b.
I gave libvirt access to my .Xauthority file and then tried via virt-

with --debug.

On 'starting the vm' I got an error message like this:

[Bug 705833] [NEW] Send with icons should be entirely greyed-out to indicate when they are disabled.

2011-01-21 Thread Dave-B
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 648544 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/648544

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

Gwibber 2.32.2

It's hard to be confident which accounts are enabled for posting, as
there isn't much visual difference between the active and inactive icon
states. Tooltip on hovering the cursor reveals when one is disabled, but
that's not convenient for at-a-glace checking.

It would be better if, in addition to the current contrast (?) change,
saturation was dropped to 0 to make them greyscale - see 2nd greyed
part of attached image.

[Bug 675120] [NEW] offlineimap: fails to check the remote server's ssl certificate is valid

2010-11-14 Thread dave b.
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: offlineimap

Package: offlineimap
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

offlineimap performs absolutely no ssl certificate checking. So users could/can
be the victim of a man in the middle attack.
In debian the following bugs exist:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=536421 (re certificate
expiration)
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=153240 (re ssl fingerprint
checking)

This could be considered a bug in imaplib (http://bugs.python.org/issue10274).
A partial 'fix' is the following(this 'fix' isn't complete and would break
connections to server's using self-signed certificates):

WARNING XXX: I haven't tested this 'fix' at all and so it is most likely
wrong.

Although, this isn't complete because it will break self-signed certificate
using server's and http://bugs.python.org/issue1589 means that it won't provide
full protection etc.
Really, what is required is that by default the certificate is checked and
perhaps an option is added to bypass the check.

This isn't a new discovery, see [1], but the package provides no warning
about this fact. I added a warning to
https://github.com/jgoerzen/offlineimap/wiki/ perhaps ubuntu can add a
warning (in the package description) until this is fixed.

[Bug 625076] Re: checkbox fails to verify ssl validity in data exchange with launchpad.net

2010-09-29 Thread dave b.
You know what, this bug isn't fixed. You clearly didn't test it.
As per http://bugs.python.org/issue1589 you are vulnerable. Test it your self
using the test I put above again... all that is different is that now don't
follow the redirect to a http:// location from what i can see.

So your application is still vulnerable, as long as I have a certificate
signed by ca in the ca store, I can MITM checkbox.

Please test your patches before saying they fix things and EVEN better
add a test to check it has been fixed.

Please let me know if I am wrong :)

[Bug 625076] [NEW] checkbox fails to verify ssl validity in data exchange with launchpad.net

2010-08-26 Thread dave b.
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: checkbox

Checkbox collects personal and private system data and sends it to
launchpad.net. However, it fails to verify that the ssl certificate for
launchpad.net is valid.

Here is the relevant code.
plugins/launchpad_exchange.py uses  HTTPTransport from
checkbox/lib/transport.py, which uses
httplib.HTTPSConnection by default. This is not secure as per the documentation
at  http://docs.python.org/library/httplib.html#httplib.HTTPSConnection

However, If the user is using a https proxy(really unlikely), then the
code (connection = ProxyHTTPSConnection(host, port)) will use the
ProxyHTTPSConnection connection which does -

class ProxyHTTPSConnection(ProxyHTTPConnection):

default_port = httplib.HTTPS_PORT

def __init__(self, host, port=None, key_file=None, cert_file=None,
strict=None):
ProxyHTTPConnection.__init__(self, host, port)
self.key_file = key_file
self.cert_file = cert_file

def connect(self):
ProxyHTTPConnection.connect(self)
self.sock = _ssl_wrap_socket(self.sock, self.key_file, self.cert_file)

So it would use _ssl_wrap_socket

which is defined at the top as

# Build the appropriate socket wrapper for ssl
try:
# Python 2.6 introduced a better ssl package
import ssl
_ssl_wrap_socket = ssl.wrap_socket
except ImportError:
# Python versions prior to 2.6 don't have ssl and ssl.wrap_socket instead
# they use httplib.FakeSocket
def _ssl_wrap_socket(sock, key_file, cert_file):
ssl_sock = socket.ssl(sock, key_file, cert_file)
return httplib.FakeSocket(sock, ssl_sock)

However, as the code has connection = ProxyHTTPSConnection(host, port)
-- when it is going to use the ProxyHTTPSConnection class, the
certificate information will be None here and therefore this code (from
what I see) will not make the data transfer between checkbox and
launchpad.net secure via the https proxy.

You can test this out by editing /etc/hosts and pointing launchpad.net to
another ip (which has an https server running) and viewing the data exchange in
wireshark.

[Bug 607439] [NEW] .asoundrc not used

2010-07-19 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

It seems as though an .asoundrc I created in my home directory is not
loaded, or the instructions are ignored.

I have been trying to get two stereo devices on one card into one four-channel
device (M-Audio FastTrack Pro), to use with jack and mixxx [0].
Currently I just have the following in it, provided by a very helpful Patrick
Shirkey (on the linux audio users mailing list) as a way to check that
.asoundrc was being handled [1]:

8
pcm.mycard{
 type hw
 card 1
 device 0
}

ctl.mycard{
 type hw
 card 1
}

After putting that in the .asoundrc and running `sudo alsa-utils
restart`, I test it and get the following:

[Bug 279062] Re: evolution-alarm-notify crashed with SIGSEGV in g_str_hash()

2010-04-14 Thread Dave-B
Surely Triaged is the correct status for Ubuntu's Evolution package.

It seems like there's some circular logic happening on this bug status -
it's reported here, but closed at gnome because it's a dupe, the dupe is
a reference to this bug, and this is invalid because there's an upstream
bug. Bleh!

If I encounter the crash again, I'll come back and see If I can tidy it
up - but that's not likely as I've just ended up using Outlook on a
VM...

[Bug 549384] Re: pitivi crashed with ValueError in computeZoomLevel()

2010-04-07 Thread Dave-B
I'm getting this error as well, when I try and move a clip from the
library to the timeline, this is using the clip
http://www.archive.org/download/Sita_Sings_the_Blues/Sita_Sings_the_Blues.ogv
from http://www.archive.org/details/Sita_Sings_the_Blues.

As with other reporters, Apport appeared, but Pitivi was still running.

This is on an old-ish machine, and trying to load the clip onto the
timeline thrashes the CPU, with a load average ~2.3.

[Bug 516051] Re: gst-launch cannot connect to gspca webcam

2010-03-08 Thread Dave-B
Ok, I've set gstreamer-properties video output to X Window System (No
Xv) (ximagesink), and the test works, but Cheese still doesn't.

In fact it shows just a single still image, rather than video.

With `cheese --gst-debug-level=2` I get the following warnings:

[Bug 516051] Re: gst-launch cannot connect to gspca webcam

2010-03-05 Thread Dave-B
Ok, after looking around some more, I find that `gst-launch v4l2src !
ffmpegcolorspace ! xvimagesink` doesn't work because the video chipset
and/or driver  doesn't support xvideo.

Running  `gst-launch v4l2src ! ffmpegcolorspace ! ximagesink` (i.e.
using ximagesink instead of xvimagesink) shows the webcam as expected.

This suggests to me that it's not a gstreamer problem (as I first
thought), but a pipeline setup problem in the applications (Cheese,
mousetrap) - where do I look to establish how the pipelines are created?

[Bug 516051] Re: gst-launch cannot connect to gspca webcam

2010-03-05 Thread Dave-B
Running `cheese --gst-debug-level=2` gives several warnings starting
with these:

[Bug 522142] [NEW] Unable to configure Cacti database on install (no MySQL root password)

2010-02-15 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cacti

Short version:

The Cacti install should set up the database by prompting the user for
database and database user information, rather than a) requiring them to
research/already know about dbconfig-common, and b) fail to install the
database because of not asking for the MySQL root password.

Long version:

I ran `sudo apt-get install cacti` and the system installed MySQL (with
root password prompt) and other dependencies, but when it gets to
configuring cacti, I get an error No database user specified.. To
continue, I'm given a choice of:

abort
retry
retry (skip questions)
ignore

Via Google I figure out that I need to set some database connection
information in /etc/dbconfig-common/cacti.conf, so I add values for,
database user, database user password, database name, and database
admin.

I'm puzzled that there's no mention of the database admin password, but
I'll try and carry on. I get no obvious Google hits around ucf, root,
and password.

I re-read /usr/share/doc/cacti/README.Debian.gz, which says
configuration dbconfig-common should be automatic.

Retrying the database installation step, I now get the error:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password:
NO)

Obviously dbconfig-common is not getting into MySQL without a password,
and is not asking me for the password.

Maybe I'm missing some commonly known approach to setting it up, but
there's nothing in the processes telling me how to get the automatic
install to work.

In the end I chose abort, and created the database manually, as
described in /usr/share/doc/cacti/README.Debian.gz. It took a bit of
fiddling, but it seems to be running now.

[Bug 470193] Re: gnome-mousetrap installs but does not run

2010-02-12 Thread Dave-B
I guess there must have been some Python updates or similar, as
Mousetrap now runs. Unfortunately I don't get any video from my webcam

Clarification: Both the Test input plugin (colour bars and noise) and
the webcam work in gstreamer-properties. (But not in Cheese or gst-

[Bug 476822] Re: Installs old grub on grub2 karmic systems, breaks update-grub

2010-01-10 Thread dave b.
I had to help a friend re-order their default grub default. They had
installed a free 9.10 ubuntu. Grub2 was installed. However the grub
(old grub) package was still installed. I installed the dummy package
grub2 which removed the old grub and reinstalled grub-pc.

This bug means that new users cannot use a graphical tool such as
StartUp Manager do not work. Also sudo update-grub *does* not work
either (it will not find /boot/grub/menu.lst).

 Hi Dave,

 The warning reported here typically indicates that it took longer for
 your system to resume from suspend than expected. I believe there
 is a
 5 sec barrier which your system likely exceeded. Typically you'll see
 something similar to PM: resume devices took 8.664 seconds in your
 dmesg output when this happens. A patch to prevent this warning has
 been applied via bug 464552. As a result I'm marking this as a
 duplicate to bug 464552. Please continue to track this issue at that
 report.  Thanks!

[Bug 299330] Re: Alt+Tab - switching applications delay. slow

2009-11-10 Thread Dave-B
FWIW, this essentially makes ALT+TAB with Compiz unusable for me. I have
to take a hand off the keyboard to focus the other window with the mouse
instead.

Possibly related: When typing monitor break kicks in with a break,
there's a delay of 3 seconds between input being frozen and the
countdown appearing (the counter appears saying 2:57).

[Bug 299330] Re: Alt+Tab - switching applications delay. slow

2009-10-08 Thread Dave-B
For me, with compiz enabled, there's variably between ~0.3 and 1.5 seconds
delay before the switcher with previews appears.
It seems like more windows to be switched through results in a longer delay.

Without compiz (and no previews) the switcher appears immediately.
