[Bug 629646] Re: Locations using bom.gov.au for forecast data no longer can no longer retrieve forecast data

2015-11-19 Thread David Clayton
The bug is back in Ubuntu 15.10 in libgweather 3.16.1-1ubuntu1

I just installed this release in preparation for the next Ubuntu LTS in
2016 and have seen that the earlier fixes of the Australian BOM
forecasts have not propagated through to this version.

I would add Wily to the list of affected versions but I cannot seem to
do it!

[Bug 941271] Re: Unnecessary HDIO_GET_IDENTITY message on boot

2014-02-07 Thread David Clayton
The Upstream bug I reported has no action (as far as I can tell) taken
on it.

The bug seems to be only apparent when a USB connected rotational drive
does not support certain features when interrogated by the kernel at
start-up, so for most drives it may not appear but for my tiny 8GB
SEAGATE ST68022CF non-SMART drive they do.

[Bug 269441] Re: Trash always full

2013-09-26 Thread David Clayton
It seems like the Trash icon has some sort of database of mounted drives
to keep tabs of items that have been deleted, and then does not refresh
this database to only display the status of actually mounted drives.

Since it can never Empty the trash of unmounted drives, the display
remains showing items to be removed on unmounted or removed drives (and
the removable drives could have their Trash actually emptied on other
systems anyway).

It seems that the Trash icon needs to hook into the mount/unmount
processes to keep itself only displaying the status of drives that are
actually mounted on the system at any particular time.

[Bug 153768] Re: External SATA (eSATA) removable disk not auto mounted

2012-09-08 Thread David Clayton
Just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 and what used to work perfectly
now does not work.

eSata drive connected, see in dmesg that partitions are detected but not
automount when valid UUID entries are in /etc/fstab.

Partitions mount when drive plugged in on system boot. Now have to
manually mount partitions after post-boot connection.

[Bug 977906] [NEW] Updating packages stalls

2012-04-10 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Using 12.04 RC installed in Melbourne Australia locale, installing and
subsequently updating packages stalls significantly delaying
installation process.

Adding this code to /etc/apt/apt.conf.d in file 80http fixes this
problem:

Acquire::http::Pipeline-Depth 0;
Acquire::http::No-Cache true;
Acquire::http::Max-Age 0;

Whether this is caused by misconfiguration of Repositories is basically
irrelevant, I have experienced this issue for years now and I always
seem to have to install this extra file to basically cure things.

[Bug 927952] Re: When I press the Print Screen button, it will not appear in Save Screenshot window.

2012-03-28 Thread David Clayton
As someone has mentioned in another thread, ONLY having sound feedback
as the sole confirmation of the Print Screen function being used is
totally discriminatory to any deaf Ubuntu users (let alone those with no
working sound on their systems).

This is a totally regressive change and is now beyond the preferences
of the developers, it clearly breaks the fundamentals of providing a
Linux environment able to be used by those not blessed with all the
abilities that most take for granted.

There must be some visual feedback because the function is associated
with the visual medium (and separating an action in one medium from the
feedback in another is such poor programming that I am struggling to
find an excuse for such bone-headedness).

Then perhaps someone can move the bug report back to Evolution or a more
appropriate place?

[Bug 955673] Re: Ubuntu One Contact Address Book does not migrate correctly

2012-03-20 Thread David Clayton
I have found further that the Ubuntu One CouchDB components aren't
installed on my working 10.04 system (which was originally installed
when 10.04 was released) but were installed on a subsequent 10.04.3
system that I used to do the migration test. Possibly Ubuntu One didn't
exist when the original 10.04 was released and these packages were only
included in the base install of the subsequent version updates. If that
is the case, then possibly not as many 10.04 users will be affected as I
first thought.

There almost needs to be a script written to test if the Ubuntu One
Contact list exists in the pre-migration Evolution setup and then have
them installed if so.

[Bug 955673] Re: Ubuntu One Contact Address Book does not migrate correctly

2012-03-20 Thread David Clayton
I migrated both 10.04 systems by copying the functional /home folder to
a new 12.04 Beta system.

I had Evolution installed on the 12.04 system and when run it converted
the existing 10.04 Evolution user data and config to the 12.04 version
of Evolution with the results as posted above.

Personally I always install a new Ubuntu release from fresh and then
enable my separate /home partition. Any conversion to new structures is
usually done smoothly with this method (a lot more smoothly than people
doing any direct Upgrade from an existing working system if the last 8
years are any guide).

[Bug 955673] Re: Ubuntu One Contact Address Book does not migrate correctly

2012-03-15 Thread David Clayton
The issue is that currently in 12.04 the CouchDB packages are now not
installed by default, and a migrated system that wants to keep using
Evolution needs the user to manually install the evolution-couchdb
package (which installs all the other CouchDB components) - this fixes
the issue after a reboot.

It is going to be a big ask to get an ordinary user to jump through this
many hoops just to keep the e-mail package they have been using
previously.

The evolution-couchdb package really need to be made a dependency of the
basic Evolution install to provide compatibility with upgrades from
10.04 LTS for the many of us that will continue to use Evolution.

[Bug 761037] Re: Evolution failed to properly migrate Local Contacts during 2.32 (Natty) Upgrade

2012-03-14 Thread David Clayton
I can confirm this in a migration to 2.3.2 from 2.28.3 on my Ubuntu
10.04 system. The files in the old .evolution tree were converted/moved
to the new .local/share/evolution tree but only the first local Address
Book worked.

To sum up, only the first On This Computer address book sources entry
was converted correctly with the relative URI, the remaining Address
Books still had the file path to the old .evolution file path left in
their definitions.

Manually removing the old uri=file:. entries using the gconf-
editor on the /apps/evolution/addressbook/sources key fixed the problem
and then allowed the data in those extra Address Books to appear.

[Bug 955673] [NEW] Ubuntu One Contact Address Book does not migrate correctly

2012-03-14 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Using Evolution on 12.04 B1 when migrating from 10.04 LTS system
(existing /home folder from 10.04 used) results in CouchDB Ubuntu One
Address Book not working on 12.04 system. Evolution version on 10.04 is
2.28.3, 12.04 version is 3.2.3. All other Address Books seem to migrate
ok.

Error message is:
-
This address book cannot be opened. This either means that an incorrect URI
was entered, or the server is unreachable.

Detailed error message: Invalid source
-
And you cannot delete this Address Book to remove the error whenever you access
this book.

I believe that the issue might be that CouchDB is no longer used in
12.04, but it still gets migrated from the old 10.04 /home folder setup.

Given that many 10.04 LTS users may well stay with Evolution in 12.04,
this could be a significant issue for those of us who will do this.

[Bug 951336] [NEW] Screensaver default time too short

2012-03-09 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

When installing using the 12.04 beta1 CD the screensaver kicks in and
blanks the screen before the installation completes on my reasonably
fast system.

For a novice user having the screen suddenly go blank can be quite
disconcerting - which may result in aborted or corrupted installations
if they then panic and hit the power/reset button on their systems.

Screensaver should be disabled when doing install or at least stretched
out to a time way past normal installation period (including allowance
for slow Internet connections for downloading updates - you know, the
connections developers DON'T use!).

[Bug 941271] Re: Unnecessary HDIO_GET_IDENTITY message on boot

2012-03-07 Thread David Clayton
Ok, tested it with the upstream kernel and this message still appears -
along with other additional diagnostic code that is not displayed with
the release kernels.

I suspect that I only see these before the Plymouth screen appears
because I use the BURG bootloader on my 10.04 system to boot 12.04, when
I use the standard 12.04 Grub bootloader it masks any kernel messages
with a mono-colour screen before continuing.

It just looks like someone has forgotten to comment out this bit of
diagnostic code in the kernel package, or it is not placed correctly in
the diagnostic code segments that are not compiled in the production
kernels.

Ok, fresh install of 12.04 Beta 1: - Server for Australia stalls on
package list and installation of packages,

Main server archive.ubuntu.com goes straight through ok.
au.archive.ubuntu.com stalls.
nz.archive.ubuntu.com stalls.
us.archive.ubuntu.com stalls.

So it seems the mirror archives are the problem with the standard APT
settings, but with the other settings I outlined in the bug report they
all function ok.

[Bug 867794] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 does not enter 'discard' filesystem option on ext4 install on SSD drive

2012-02-24 Thread David Clayton
For any SSD compatible partition created by the Ubuntu installer or
gparted or the Disk Manager then the appropriate TRIM option should be
set.

It is relatively easy to test if a drive is a SSD (sda in this example):

cat /sys/block/sda/queue/rotational

0 (zero) means non-rotational (SSD), 1 means a normal rotational
drive.

Any non-TRIM filesystem installed on a SSD should also be flagged with a
big warning message that doing rewrites on this non-TRIM partition may
eventually use up all the empty blocks and cripple SSD performance on
ALL partitions.

[Bug 939343] [NEW] Applying Changes window keeps resizing

2012-02-23 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

When updated packages are being installed the Applying Changes window
expands and then contracts when it encounters a package name that
exceeds the anticipated width that the default window is set for.

This is annoying and looks amateurish, either make the window big enough
to handle the maximum package name length (if there is such a thing) or
have it remain at the larger width.

[Bug 928605] Re: Shift Live Earth wallpaper

2012-02-08 Thread David Clayton
You don't seem to quite understand my request, the image stays exactly
the same size, but instead of Africa/Western Europe being centred,
another part of the planet is in the centre of your screen.

Just imagine the rectangular earth picture being dragged sideways (and
wrapping around the ends of the screen).

In a program like xplanet you achieve this by supplying the -longitude
co-ordinate. In Gnome 2 I was able to get this information in a script
from:

LONGITUDE=$(gconftool -g /apps/panel/applets/clock_screen0/prefs/cities
| cut -f5 -d | cut -f2 -d = | sed 's///g' )

[Bug 899503] Re: first slide on 12.04 thinks it's 11.10

2012-02-05 Thread David Clayton
This sort of thing can be confusing, I download and installed a 12.04
daily build to start testing and then glanced at the install screen as
it was proceeding and saw the 11.10 string - I first thought that I
had selected the wrong ISO to install and was about to abort the whole
process before deciding to let it run and see what version actually
booted up.

While this sort of thing may seem trivial to those who are deeply
involved in the project of creating a new release, for others who come
in as testers - especially those new to the process - it may well end up
causing frustration and therefore discourage them from continuing in the
bug discovery and reporting process that improves the quality of the
eventual release.

Re: [Bug 914575] Re: speech-dispatcher grabs alsa hw device

2012-02-01 Thread David Clayton
Actually I was not even aware that speech-dispatcher was installed on my
system, and I'm at a bit of a loss to understand how it came to be
installed. The problem only became manifest following upgrade to 12.04.
I also haven't used Orca. I have now uninstalled speech-dispatcher and
the bug has disappeared. I'm not sure whether any logs will remain
following removal of the package but I will look when I get home.

Speech-dispatcher is a text to speech system, mostly used for

be loaded either if you enable it as a system service in /etc/default
/speech-dispatcher, or you use a program like the Orca Screen reader,
which causes speech-dispatcher to load automatically. In the case of
speech-dispatcher running as a user, it should have used pulseaudio.

Could you please attach any logs you find in ~/.speech-dispatcher/log to

2012-02-01 Thread David Clayton
Luke

I don't know if this will be much help

There was no log, so I reinstalled speech-dispatcher. Initially sound
was OK, but when I started speech-dispatcher, speaker-test failed:

david@david-samsung:~$ speaker-test

speaker-test 1.0.24.2

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy

log file is attached.

I then killed speech-dispatcher, but speaker-test still gives the same
error, and there is no sound on the speaker.

it has been installed by default since as far back as at least Lucid I
think, but since you didn't need ti and since it didn't cause you
problems, it has been keeping out of your way.

if you can get logs, that would be much appreciated.

[Bug 770652] Re: sunrise and sunset info incorrect

2012-01-20 Thread David Clayton
I can confirm that this problem still occurs for location Melbourne
Australia in version 11.05.31 'Cloudy 8' on Ubuntu 11.10. Sunrise/Sunset
times do not take into account current Daylight Saving time so they are
offset by one hour.

Gnome 2 Weather Report applet running on same system reports correct
times.

[Bug 531762] Re: System monitor System tab should show architecture (32/64bit)

2011-11-05 Thread David Clayton
System settings now has a System Info icon, which shows the 64-bit in
the OS type field of the overview.

Fixed if you ask me, this bug can be closed

Quite the opposite, in fact. If the code already exists to show this
missing data then it should be trivial to patch this package and
actually fix it properly.

It is a very poor excuse to tell people to assemble the information that
they may need from multiple sources because of essentially trivial
deficiencies in one source.

The System info doesn't even tell you the kernel or Gnome versions
that are running, both important items when a novice user is asked to
provide info about their system when asking for help, so that cannot be
considered as any replacement for the more information provided by the
System Monitor package.

[Bug 879305] [NEW] POP Leave messages on server now requires Days

2011-10-21 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Evolution 3.x has changed in the POP Receiving Options to have the
Leave Messages On Server selection linked to the Days value. In
Evolution 2.x (and probably previous versions) these options were
separate.

This is very confusing for users who want *all* their POP messages left
on the server with no day filtering, and seems non-standard when
compared to previous Evolution versions and just about every other POP
client that I have encountered.

If the Leave messages on server option is selected, then the Days
option should also be required to enabled, not left permanently enabled
as if the current situation.

[Bug 629646] Re: Locations using bom.gov.au for forecast data no longer can no longer retrieve forecast data

2011-10-20 Thread David Clayton
Over 12 months now and a bug THAT HAS A WORKING PATCH AVAILABLE has
still not been fixed.

I just did a test install of Ubuntu 11.10 and the bug is still there,
yet a dopey user like myself was previously able to use the patch files
to fix the Australian only file which causes the problem - but the
maintainers of this package cannot make this seemingly trivial change.

Looks good when I show a Windows user how great Linux is and they ask
why this bit doesn't work and I tell them that it was reported over 12
months ago - not!

Wassup?

C,mon developers, this is another one of these EMBARRASSING things that

All removable devices should be auto fsck'd as a strict policy to ensure

least give people a warning and the option to fix things.

[Bug 858102] [NEW] cgroup service prevents VMWare services stopping

2011-09-24 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

I recently discovered that I could not update VMWare Player - the phase
of the uninstall that stops the existing services would hang and
eventually the whole system would require a power reset. System would
also hang on shutdown under normal operation.

Uninstalling cgroup-bin libcgroup1 fixes both these issues.

I have set up cgroups on my 10.04 system as per:
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/11/alternative-to-200-lines-kernel-

[Bug 829842] Re: VMware Player cannot compile to use new kernel

2011-09-24 Thread David Clayton
I have now done a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04.3 64-bit desktop and the
VMWare stuff works as normal.

Something has changed in the environment of my original system - either
through updates from the time of the original install - or in its
configuration that prevents VMWare services from being stopped but it is
not down to this kernel release.

Since this seems to affect another user then it seems that it is not
related to just me, but it may be very difficult to find out what is the
root cause.

This bug report should be closed with the appropriate reason.
