Public bug reported: Please upgrade allegro to the latest upstream versions. Latest 4.2 series version: 4.2.3.1 Latest series 4 version: 4.4.2 Latest stable version: 5.0.5 So, Ubuntu and Debian are even out of date as far as 4.2 is concerned. [Bug 691100] Re: Replay gain in soundkonverter broken
OK, I didn't realize that. The version of soundkonverter that had been included in Ubuntu in Lucid and previous releases actually changed the volume of the sound throughout the file in a way that Audacity even recognized. I'll see what I can do to test around and verify whether the tags work on some of the players that I use. I will point out that I tried a converted file using Exaile. I listened to both the original .wav and the .mp3, and found no hearable difference (and, yes, the original wav was recorded quite soft). But that's just one player -- hardly representative. Still, it is an indication that, if the tags are correctly in place, the tags are not universally recognized. I was personally happier when the replay gain function worked for everyone, as it did in the days of Lucid. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/691100 Title: Replay gain in soundkonverter broken -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 691100] Re: Replay gain in soundkonverter broken
This version claims itself as version 1.0.0 beta 1. Also notes -- using KDE development platform 4.5.1. Looking in synaptic, I have the 0.9.90-1 package installed. When I pull both the original .wav and the resultant .mp3 into Audacity, these look like nearly identical files. These sermon files tend to get recorded pretty quietly by my church, and the resulting mp3 is not louder than the wav file. I would expect a noticeable volume difference, if the replay gain worked (as it did in the older version of soundkonverter). I included both logs in the zip file. The main log is the default main log file. The file log is the one specific to converting my file to .mp3. [Bug 616394] Re: dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/nvidia_drv.so: undefined symbol: miEmptyData
This has actually happened frequently in the past -- that the legacy nvidia drivers get abandoned for a time. Previously, the problem had always eventually gotten fixed. However, this is something that we should warn people about. At least in my experience, using the nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick will not allow you any graphic capabilities. You will be dropped to a command line, but will not be given a chance to switch to lower graphic capabilities, as in previous versions of Ubuntu. (In Lucid and some previous releases, when nvidia was not working, it would ask to use low-graphics mode. [Bug 339501] Re: lsb-desktop package depends on transitional package
Continues to be a problem in lucid. The libqt4-gui package split into 5 different packages as of Intrepid. So, with the advent of Lucid, this has now been a bug for 2 full years. The libqt4-gui package does not describe itself as a metapackage, but as a transitional, dummy package. That is, nothing should depend on it, once users have migrated to the new release. ??? Doesn't support the hardware??? OK -- I thought that the goal with Linux was to be able to be installed on pretty much all computers. Why wouldn't we support a computer that's only 3 - 4 years old? Yes, the manufacturer is misreporting the screen size. But, since this is so common for certain Intel processors, instead of turning a blind eye, we should be finding solutions that work for people that want to try Linux. This computer is still relatively recent, and worthy of support -- even with the latest release of the *buntu's. I'm sold on Linux. And I'll keep using Linux. And for the time being, I'm satisified with the *buntu variants. But I could see that such a response could quickly turn a newbie cold on the whole Linux experience. [Bug 439276] [NEW] Multiple finds impossible in Leafpad.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: leafpad Karmic Koala. Leafpad version 0.8.13. Following these steps, my copy of Leafpad fails every time to perform as expected. 1) Load a document. 2) Go to Search - Find or hit Ctrl+F. Notice when this first pops up, the Find button is greyed out and unusual. That's OK at this point. I haven't told it what to find. 3) Start typing something to search for in the Find What box. With the first keypress, the Find button becomes active and is usable. 4) Actually perform the find. I finish typing what I want to find, and hit return or click the Find button. It does find what I asked it to find. I can even do find next (Ctrl+G) and find prev (Shift+Ctrl+G) without a problem. Everything up to this point seems to works as expected. But, somehow it sets up something inthe background that makes the next bit not work. 5) Go to Search - Find or hit Ctrl-F. Note again that the Find button is greyed out, but there is already text in the Find What box. That's already peculiar. Why can't I search for the same thing I just searched for? Turns out -- if I cancel, I can still successfully use find next and find prev, but these only search for the first search text I specified. 6) Start typing something to search for in the Find What box. This time, it doesn't matter what I type in the box. Nothing makes the find button active again. [Bug 439275] [NEW] Multiple finds impossible in Leafpad.
So, the only way I can search for two different things in my document is to open the document, search once, close leafpad, restart it, open my document and search for the other term. The Replace functionality as broken in the exact same way. [Bug 439289] [NEW] Lubuntu-desktop has unnecessary requirements
Public bug reported: lubuntu-desktop has built itself as supposedly a light-weight alternative to other *buntu-desktop packages. From what I read, the intent is for support with minimal resources, including (but not exclusively) supporting older systems. Lubuntu-desktop depends on bluetooth and gnome-bluetooth. This is a requirement that none of the other -desktop packages have. Others *recommend* bluez-cups and bluez-utils. But they do not depend on them. Bluetooth wireless should be no more than a recommends on lubuntu also. Pulse-audio is not fully integrated into all of Linux, and has enough issues of its own. It would be best if the lightweight buntu allowed for pulse to be stripped out. Again, recommend, not depend. Same could be said for gstreamer. ALSA does very fine on its own. Make sure an ALSA system is fully in place, and let the user decide whether to put anything on top of it. We're going for lightweight here. The heavyweight browser (firefox) is demanded by lubuntu-desktop. Better here to do something like what the lxde package did. Suggest one browser (could be Firefox), but only depend on www-browser. (Actually, lxde only recommended www-browser, but I could see moving this up to depend for a -desktop package.) lubuntu-desktop depends on language-pack-en. That's just culturally wrong. Why insist that everyone speak English? None of the other *buntu-desktops demand one particular language -- although each depends on a language-selector. lubuntu-desktop depends on xorg, as it should. It also depends on xorg- xserver-input-all and the evtouch package, which it should not. The xorg package and its dependencies already depend properly on input and outputs. lubuntu-desktop depends on abiword and gnumeric. These may be the best as far as lightness, but not the best as far as interoperability with other systems (MS Office). I would suggest recommending an office package, but whether the user wants goffice, koffice, or oo.o should be left to them. ** Affects: lubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Lubuntu-desktop has unnecessary requirements https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439289 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If this is still a lingering issue, the grub team should review the original debian bug. It looks like some patch code has been added into the upstream bug report. [Bug 31218] Re: ubuntu-desktop package could depend on libstdc++5 (lots of thirdy party software requires this library)
I know this is an old bug -- but its also still open. Wouldn't this kind of thing fall under LSB compliance? Ubuntu 8.04 and 9.04 are tested as LSB 4.0 compliant. Ubuntu 6.06 is LSB 3.1 compliant. (See https://www.linuxfoundation.org/lsb-cert/productdir.php?by_lsb) I don't see Baltix listed. Its my understanding, that distribution compliance indicates that we have the libraries available for any LSB-compliant application to just work with the system. Now, for a specific computer to see such functionality, they may need to install the LSB meta-packages, so it would be a good thing to have the [u|ku|xu|edu]buntu-desktop meta- packages at least suggest (if not recommend / require) the main lsb meta-packages. If the user chooses not to install such functionality, that's their option. If an application found on the web is not keeping lsb-compliant libraries, then it would be the responsibility of the community and community individuals to encourage the application to become lsb- compliant so that the software just works in Linux -- almost any Linux box. Note that each generation of lsb ensures backwards compatability (for a reasonable time period) with previous generations. That allows lsb-compliant applications time to evolve to newer libraries, as technologies continue to advance. As for Baltix, if they have not already, I would encourage them to seek lsb certification so that they also have the necessary functionality to support lsb-compliant applications. Then bugs like this should be able to be closed. -- ubuntu-desktop package could depend on libstdc++5 (lots of thirdy party software requires this library) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/31218 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Once past the login screen, fonts normalized for splash screen leading to xfce. wdm looked fine, but splash screen leading to xfce still used enormous fonts. Once inside XFCE, gtk applications seemed to go back to normal font sizes. All KDE applications were unusable due to enormous fonts, until I changed XFCE to use custom dpi of 98 (as calculated by Xorg, after forced DisplaySize added). Even after XFCE tweak, some instances of enormous fonts persisted in KDE applications until final xorg.conf tweak added. [Bug 75882] Re: apt-get autoremove removes required packages
No, it's not. Look at your output from Show. Priority: shows as Optional. Gnome-core is not a Priority: Required package. Its a meta-package that can be used to bring in one group's (Gnome developers? Debian?) idea of a base set of Gnome packages, but it is not essential. The Ubuntu folks have developed their own idea of what should be included as part of a Gnome system, and these would be the Depends portion of ubuntu-desktop. [Bug 300243] Re: titlebars disappear when using compiz GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x
Not sure why this happens, but something gets messed up in the xorg.conf by using the automated tools. Here's a few parts of the original xorg.conf posted on this page: Section Monitor Identifier Configured Monitor EndSection Section Monitor Identifier Monitor0 VendorName Unknown ModelName Sony CPD-G420 HorizSync 30.0 - 110.0 VertRefresh 48.0 - 170.0 EndSection Does the user have two monitors? Doubtful. So there shouldn't be two monitor entries. I would suggest removing the first Monitor entry. Section Device Identifier Configured Video Device Driver nvidia Option NoLogo True EndSection Section Device Identifier Device0 Driver nvidia VendorName NVIDIA Corporation BoardName GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X EndSection Two devices? Probably not. I would strip out the first one, but you may want to consider keeping the Option and putting it in the second Device. (Would prevent the computer from showing the nVidia logo when X starts. Your choice.) Section Screen Identifier Default Screen Device Configured Video Device MonitorConfigured Monitor DefaultDepth24 Option AddARGBGLXVisuals True Option DisableGLXRootClipping True EndSection Section Screen Identifier Screen0 Device Device0 MonitorMonitor0 DefaultDepth24 Option TwinView 0 Option TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder CRT-0 Option metamodes 1600x1200_75 +0+0 SubSection Display Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection Here things get trickier. Notice how Screen0 is mentioned in the ServerLayout section of xorg.conf, so you need to keep those two identifiers coordinated. You'll also need to make sure that the Device and Monitor setting listed here match what you have for identifiers above. I believe that you can get away with deleting the TwinView settings, as you appear to be using the defaults. But I would suggest taking the two options from the first Screen entry, moving them into your second Screen entry, and removing the first Screen specification. I don't know what makes the duplicate entries, but I've found on my own computer that simplifying xorg.conf makes it obey quite a bit better. Finally, you indicated that you tried to update how compiz handles rendering. See bug 294076. Looks like others are going the opposite way and changing how nVidia handles rendering by changing xorg.conf. Try adding: Option RenderAccel 0 to your Device settings, and see if that helps your rendering problems. -- titlebars disappear when using compiz GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/300243 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

grub 0.97-2 must have been a dapper or edgy version. (Perhaps an update to dapper?) [Bug 324864] Re: nvidia-glx-96 driver for mx 440 causes problems with desmume
Is this a problem with the package you're downloading, or a problem with how you have your video card set up? Make sure you have the mesa-utils package installed, and run glxgears from a terminal. This will bring up a pop-up window that should show a set of interlocked gears turning. In the meantime, every 10 seconds or so, the terminal window will print out a message about the number of frames per second that you're seeing in the pop-up window. While this is not intended as a benchmarking tool, it is an extremely efficient test of whether opengl is working for you. Make sure that glxgears stays running for half a minute or more before you close it. If your pop-up window only shows black (no gears), if your fps show less than 1000, or if glxgears after printing only a couple fps messages before crashing, then something needs to be addressed with your card setup, and this is an appropriate place to deal with that issue. If glxgears runs fine, and you're still having problems with this one package, I would suggest that its more likely there's a problem in the package that needs to be addressed with the author of the package. In that case, I would follow the bug tracking tools for the package. -- nvidia-glx-96 driver for mx 440 causes problems with desmume https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/324864 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
