[Bug 641346] [NEW] [xorg-edgers][i965] enabled DVMT in bios causes sudden system deaths

2010-09-17 Thread Dmitriy Geels
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Not sure if it's xorg or drm bug. Doesn't depend on kernel version:
reproduced on stock 10.04 kernel and all newer kernels for lucid from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/.

My motherboard: Asus P5B-VM
Running Ubuntu 10.04.1, 2.6.34-020634-generic x86_64

Several months ago, after one of updates from xorg-edgers, sudden system deaths
begun.
Death sympthoms:
- picture on display freezes, mostly during compiz desktop slide-switching or
opengl screensaver running, rarely during zoom
- most times kernel even doesn't react to magic key combination (sometimes it's
still responses to SysRq+R,S,U,B)
- nothing about kernel panic or some errors in logs (after successful emergency
sync,unmount,reboot)

Making some expirements these months, I found out, that DVMT bios settings
directly affects this issue.
I think, video driver or DRM have problem with video ram area configuration,
and this causes video adapter to write to kernel memory.

Because of bug in apport, I was unable to send report using ubuntu-bug.
Tell if some system information required.

[Bug 576258] Re: Cyrillic characters can't be entered in NetBeans editor

2010-05-09 Thread Dmitriy Stepanenko
I have found that the problem is only related to the Netbeans
distributions packaged by Sun. I have also installed the same Netbeans
6.8 from Ubuntu deb packages side by side with Sun's Netbeans and have
seen that it accepts cyrillic input well.

But this hasn't cured the Sun's Netbeans - it keeps to transliterate
cyrillic characters.

Surely, this is a workaround, but not the perfect. Sun's package (a
single bulk file) is somewhat more suitable for offline installation
than multiple Ubuntu debs with complex dependencies.

[Bug 576258] [NEW] Cyrillic characters can't be entered in NetBeans editor

2010-05-06 Thread Dmitriy Stepanenko
Public bug reported:

I cannot enter cyrillic characters in NetBeans 6.8 editor under Lucid
Lynx. I can switch the keyboard to the Russian layout (which is
indicated with Gnome keyboard applet and the Scroll-lock LED), but the
characters entered appear as latin ones, not cyrillic, as if they were
transliterated of the keyboard layout wasn't switched. Cyrillic
characters that where in the text previously (the text was imported from
another system) are displayed well. Cyrillic characters that was copy-
pasted from another program also look well.

I did not see this problem under Karmic Koala. Also cyrillic input
behaves well in the same NetBeans 6.8 under CentOS 5.x and under Windows
7.

This does not seem to be a problem in Java runtime as such. First, it
appears independently of what JRE I use: OpenJDK or SunJava. And second,
it does not appear in other Java programs, at least JEdit accepts
cyrillic input well.

[Bug 553190] Re: gdm-session-worker crashes on usb storage mount/unmount/connect/disconnect

2010-04-06 Thread Dmitriy Geels
Sebastien, I tried to force gdm-session-worker to produce core dump, but had no
luck.
It's /proc/pid/limits has soft core limit set to 0:
Limit Soft Limit Hard Limit Units
...
Max core file size0unlimitedbytes
...

I think, this prevents core dump (and apport to catch it). Limits from
/etc/security/limits.* applied after gdm start, init script with ulimit
-c unlimited didn't change the situation -- looks like, that limit is
overridden somewhere.

If you can tell, how to get core dump for gdm -- I will post all details.
This backtrace was collected with gdb attached to running process.

[Bug 553190] Re: Xorg crashes on usb storage unmount/disconnect

2010-04-05 Thread Dmitriy Geels
Problem still persists after today's update.
To be sure I rolled back all xorg-edgers packages to native Lucid versions.
Crashes are still reproduced.

I'll try to obtain backtrace (running gdb from different tty hangs X, so
I need another pc).

Package gdb-avr is outdated!
It is still 6.4.90.dfsg-3ubuntu1 in Ubuntu Lucid, while gdb is already

gdb-avr may be easily built from source of gdb package -- so, why not

[Bug 344673] Re: wrong /dev/eventX permissions for force feedback devices

2009-11-16 Thread Dmitriy Geels
Ubuntu Karmic is released, HAL is deprecated now, so permissions should
be applied thru udev.

** Changed in: hal (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid

** Changed in: udev (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid = New

** Summary changed:

- wrong /dev/eventX permissions for force feedback devices
+ wrong /dev/input/eventX permissions

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: udev

This wasn't a problem before 2.6.28, because force feedback for HID
devices was missing in ubuntu kernel. But now that will become a
  problem.

  d...@dmig-desktop:~$ ll /dev/input/
  ...
  crw-rw 1 root root 13, 64 2002-01-22 04:57 event0
  crw-rw 1 root root 13, 65 2002-01-22 04:57 event1
  crw-rw 1 root root 13, 66 2002-01-22 04:57 event2
  crw-rw 1 root root 13, 67 2002-01-22 04:57 event3
  crw-rw 1 root root 13, 68 2002-01-22 04:57 event4
  crw-rw 1 root root 13, 69 2002-01-22 04:57 event5
  ...

As you may see, all devices are owned by root. This will prevent anyone else
from using FF.
E.g. device event5 is a gamepad supporting force feedback, then id's node
must have group set to 'plugdev' (or some other).

Here is a message from linux-input maillist about this situation:
I've read the documentation about force feedback in
Documentation/input/ff.txt. But I'm rather unsure how to use it actually. So
far I understood this you have to use /dev/input/eventX to access your ff-
device. But normally only root has read and write access to this device
files,
while a joystick is used normally using /dev/input/jsX which can be used by
a
   non-root user.

So my actual question is: How can I use force feedback of a joystick without
setting global read/write permissions to /dev/input/eventX?

The distribution should configure joystick eventX devices to either have
global read/write access, or read/write access for one group (which the
user is in), or have it chown the device to logged-in user, depending on
  distribution conventions.

One can identify joystick devices from other eventX devices with udev
variable ENV{ID_CLASS}=joystick, or with existence of /dev/input/by-
path/*-event-joystick, which is a symlink to the eventX device.

On Mandriva Linux, permissions are granted to logged-in user with
  pam_console / ConsoleKit, with /dev/input/by-path/*-event-joystick.
+
+ Added on 16.11.2009:
+ Actually, this problem is wider, than just for force-feedback devices: there
are input devices, which report their state (e.g. logitech wireless mice can
tell their battery status) -- these also require write permissions.

[Bug 344673] Re: wrong /dev/input/eventX permissions

2009-11-16 Thread Dmitriy Geels
I can give 2 examples (devices which I have):
- saitek gamepad with force feedback -- sudo needed to use force feedback
- wireless logitech mouse -- sudo needed to ask mouse for battery status (using
revoco utility)

In both cases sudo needed, because /dev/input/eventX devices have 0664
permissions and root:root ownership (which I consider wrong).

[Bug 457530] [NEW] brightness changes 2 levels at once

2009-10-21 Thread Dmitriy Geels
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

here is picture of what happens:
1) I set brightness to 0 level:
levels: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
current: 0

2) I press brightness up once:
levels: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
current: 2

3) ... once more:
levels: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
current: 4

4) ... and once more:
levels: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
current: 6

and same for brightness down.
Now I do killall gnome-power-manager, and then repeat test:
1) from 0 level, brightness up once:
levels: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
current: 1

2) ... once more:
levels: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
current: 2

3) ... and once more:
levels: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
current: 3

This is correct behavior, when g-p-m is not running.

gnome-power-manager --debug --verbose --no-daemon produces no output, so
no logs to attach

Eh... do you mean gdb source? http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/download/
As I understand, gdb-avr may be built even from gdb package source.

[Bug 371795] Re: SHMconfig not possible for gsynaptics

2009-07-06 Thread Dmitriy Geels
William, please see bug #355071 and tell, what what have I done wrong
way? Synaptics driver completely ignore all settings from HAL. That is
what bug report about.

I suppose, these bug reports should be marked as 'wontfix', as HAL is
deprecated now and will be discarded from 9.10.
