[Bug 254107] Re: xorg memory leak when changing desktop wallpapers (Gnome)
I've found out! It's definitely a compiz issue. While changing desktop wallpapers and compiz turned on, there is a memory leak as I explained in my first post here. As soon as I disable compiz and change the wallpaper, all leaked memory is freed and Xorg's memory usage normalizes. Then, if I enable compiz again, memory leaks again. So it definitely must be a compiz issue, because it happens on both ATI and NVIDIA. ** Also affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- xorg memory leak when changing desktop wallpapers (Gnome) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/254107 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 254107] Re: xorg memory leak when changing desktop wallpapers (Gnome)
This happens to me too. Yesterday, I've put an animation for my desktop wallpaper (the fedora's solar desktop that changes the background according to the time of day), and in only 10 hours Xorg ate 3.2 GiB of memory. I restarted the X, and after another 3 hours, Xorg was already eating 700 MiB of memory. Then, I changed my desktop background to the static image and restarted the X and now Xorg is stable at 128 MiB of memory usage. At first I thought that it was the problem with the transition effect while changing the background, but now I tried to change the desktop background a few times, and every time I change the background, the memory usage of the Xorg increases by the size of the newly selected image - so after a few changes of bigger pictures, Xorg increased it's memory usage by 100 MiB. ** Also affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- xorg memory leak when changing desktop wallpapers (Gnome) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/254107 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If you have ATI card and are using the proprietary fglrx driver, then you should do a full upgrade, because the fglrx from hardy's repository isn't compatible with the new kernel. On my side, it took about 1 hour to do a full upgrade. If you don't have a very specific configuration, it would also be good to make a fresh install. And what about the ACPI support? I really have no idea. It is possible to install the 2.6.27 kernel on the 8.04, but this will be as much the same as doing an upgrade to 8.10, because most of the software in intrepid's repository isn't much newer that those in hardy's repository. Now I installed the "fglrx-modialises" package on my intrepid installation, and jockey recognised my graphics card and offered me to install the fglrx. I clicked the "Activate" button and the installation of fglrx finished, I restarted my system. X couldn't start anymore - I booted into console. After that, I ran "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" to reset the mess in xorg.conf that jockey-gtk created, and after that X started, but kept restarting itself like a maniac. I've provided both the xorg.0.log while failing to load X with fglrx and xorg.0.log while using the radeon driver that kept my X restarting. Just after deleting the xorg-driver-fglrx package and restarting the system, radeon driver works well again. Why radeon driver doesn't work if fglrx is installed, even if fglrx is not used?? It's definitely not the bug you suggested, cro. I've cleared my dkms tree and made a clean install of fglrx. I still have the same issue. I've provided my Xorg.0.log with ubuntu's default xorg.conf and fglrx installed, my Xorg.0.log with 'Driver "fglrx"' line added in 'Section "Device"' in xorg.conf and my current xorg.conf (with fglrx disabled - just invert the comments in Section "Device" to get my xorg.conf configuration which generated the second mentioned Xorg.0.log). [Bug 291210] [NEW] fglrx doesn't work with Mobility Radeon X1600 on 64bit intrepid
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx Just after making an upgrade from hardy to intrepid, I've lost my graphics completely. Even if the xorg-driver-fglrx package was installed, fglrx driver wasn't in use. Jockey-gtk just hanged after trying to activate the fglrx. I came into the tty console and tried inserting the fglrx manually. Here is what I got: $ sudo modprobe fglrx [1086.656545] [fglrx:firegl_init_module] *ERROR* firegl_stub_register failed FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.27-7-generic/updates/dkms/fglrx.ko): Operation not permitted. Radeon driver works only if the xorg-driver-fglrx package is not installed (otherwise vesa is used). It is able to do some 3D rendering (for compiz), but hasn't got any XVideo support. Therefore, I can't play any videos at all. Just to be sure that this weird behaviour is not a consequence of my configuration, I downloaded and burned the intrepid's ISO image and booted into liveCD session. [Bug 220640] Re: [hardy] iwl3945/iwl4965 + wpasupplicant fails to connect to university network. regression from gutsy (ipw3945+wpasupplicant)
After the applying the latest update of backport modules, my laptop lost the ability to resume correctly from suspend after being suspended with WLAN turned on. After resume, I see the desktop, I can move the mouse and open the menus, but whenever I start any of the programs (even if I try to open the folder), nothing happens. Network manager also cannot connect to my WLAN after resume. By pressing the ctrl+alt+f1 and logging to the tty and trying to kill the gdm (or anything else), console freezes on "sudo" command. By pressing the ctrl+alt+backspace in desktop, X cannot start anymore (computer freezes) - then I have to do a hard reboot. I've tried with Intrepid Alpha 6 on live session, and the issue seems to be fixed for me too. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Fix Released -- Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

ApolloFER, please download the intrepid beta, and try connecting to FERwlan from the live session. Some have reported that connection works (although lousy) by user-compiling the latest compat-wireless drivers on hardy. These should be included in 2.6.27 kernel in intrepid. -- [hardy] iwl3945/iwl4965 + wpasupplicant fails to connect to university network. regression from gutsy (ipw3945+wpasupplicant) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220640 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 253629] Re: Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu
I've done the upgrade of the BIOS, but the problem persists. I've found out how to change the time of turning the computer on. Go to you BIOS -> power management -> enable the wake on RTC alarm and set the alarm on the desired time. Restart the computer, re-enter the BIOS and now disable the "wake on RTC alarm" option. Your computer will now turn on at the specified time, ignoring the "enabled/disabled" option. Looks like kernel ignores that BIOS option and always react as it is enabled. You can also temporarely disable the turning on of the computer with the following commands: $ sudo -i # echo +-00-00\ 00:00:01 > /proc/acpi/alarm Note that if you issue this command at e.g. 2008-08-20 09:00:00, your computer will turn on on 2008-08-21 09:00:01, provided you didn't turn on the computer for the whole day. Looks like kernel ignores date option as well as enabled/disabled option. After I figured that out, I made a little script that always set the alarm one second in the future at the shutdown process, thus getting a 24 hour guarantee that computer won't turn on. Unfortunately, lots of writing in /proc/acpi/alarm somehow messed up my BIOS, so that after couple of days of using the script, it somehow messed up my BIOS, thus making impossible for any OS to boot. Ubuntu kept giving me a kernel panic, and XP a blue screen. After a flash recovery, I made a clean install of gutsy and now everything works fine. 2008/8/19 sipan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Hi > > I have exact the same problem (only time is 2:22) and the same MSI > motherboard. [Bug 253629] Re: Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu
We have discovered how to change the time at which the computer is to be turned on: In BIOS settings, there is an power management/Wake Up Events/Wake On Alarm option. This option is disabled by default, but it looks like hardy's kernel ignores the enabled/disabled option and always thinks that this option is enabled and upon shutting down schedules the BIOS to turn on the computer at the time which is configured in Wake On Alarm option (although it is disabled). If computer is mechanically turned off, then it doesn't turn on automatically. The same is if it is turned off from windows. Now, the question is: does windows (and kernels prior 2.6.24) turn computer off by putting it to G3 state, or there is definitely a bug in 2.6.24? -- Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 253629] [NEW] Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu
Public bug reported: I am using Ubuntu 8.04.1 with 2.6.24-19-generic kernel (32 bit). If I shutdown my computer from ubuntu properly, it turns automatically on at exactly 12:30 AM. At first I thought it is a BIOS related problem, but then I found out that computer automatically turns on ONLY IF it was PROPERLY shut down from ubuntu. If it was shut down from windows or by force, computer doesn't turn on. I've disabled all wake-up events in BIOS, but the problem persists. The only way to keep my computer turned off is to shut it down from windows or to unplug the power cable. A friend of mine said he has the very same problem, but on only one of his computers (and the time of turning on is different: in his case it is 9 AM). We've found out that both his and my computer have the same motherboard: MSI 865PE Neo2. I've provided the output of dmidecode and I think this may be a kernel related problem. This wasn't happening on gutsy, and I'm not sure if this started to happen right after install of hardy, or after some updates. Now I'll try to install and boot the oldest kernel in repository and I'll keep you notified if the computer will turn on automatically after shutting down the computer properly using the oldest kernel in repository. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: automatically shutdown ubuntu -- Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 178530] Re: hardy alpha2 PRO/Wireless 3945ABG does not work
In my case it works too, but only in open networks. I.e. I have no troubles connecting to my WLAN at home, but I can't connect to my university's WLAN, which requires 802.1X authentication. Wpa_supplicant just can't attach to the driver. [Bug 178530] Re: hardy alpha2 PRO/Wireless 3945ABG does not work
IEEE 802.1X authentication is not working. I can't connect to my university's WLAN. Network is found, but keeps connecting. I tried authentication with wpa_supplicant, but it can't attach to the driver to start the authentication process. Re: [Bug 209284] Re: evince crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()
This bug happened after resuming from suspend. I restored the evolution window prior gnome-network-manager succeeded in connecting to Internet but evolution thought it was on-line and tried to check for new mail on MS Exchange server. Since network connection still hasn't returned, evolution freezed, and didn't unfreeze even after connection returned. I had to force quit it.
