[Bug 357358] [NEW] Apport should make clear to non-technical users what happens when submitting or subscribing to a bug report
Public bug reported: Currently apport will ask a user if they want to submit a bug, then bring them to Launchpad where the user is met with a variety of options when filing a bug. Its clear, from subscribing to many bug reports, that theres several points of confusion about what this involves. 1. Non-technical users don't understand technical details of the bug like "undhandled exception in...", process signals, or exit statuses. It is unreasonable for them to make a decision as to weather or not a bug is a duplicate based on this info. The language on the bug reporting page should be modified to say something like "I think my bug looks like this" or "Launchpad thinks these bugs are similar. Do you want to subscribe/contribute to an existing report or start a new report?" 2. It is apparent from the volume of e-mails that are sent to Launchpad bug subscription lists with only the word "unsubscribe" in the body or subject that the current apport workflow encourages users to subscribe to bugs when they have no meaningful or valuable information to contribute, particularly when they are reporting a duplicate. Something should be done to alert these users that subscribing to a bug means they may get a lot of techie e-mail. There should be some sort of option box like "please allow developers to contact me for further information" vs "please subscribe me to all developer discussions related to this bug (you may get lots of very technical e-mail)". This issue has a major, negative impact on the Ubuntu and Launchpad communities. It makes it difficult for people who are interested in bugs to go about reporting and fixing them in an orderly manner, and it makes end-users averse to participating in the bug reporting process. This issue should be addressed in either Launchpad, Apport, or both. ** Affects: apport Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: malone Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: apport (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: apport Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: malone Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Apport should make clear to non-technical users what happens when submitting or subscribing to a bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357358 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 353474] [NEW] Connection Hangs and Inability to Perform DNS Lookups
Public bug reported: When using the Internet (particularly ssh and http) I often have connections which time out or "hang". In the case of HTTP connections, the connection seems to hang until it times out and is unable to recover. In the case of SSH, the connection hangs and will not respond of a period of multiple seconds, sometimes even a minute. When I notice a "hang" starting, I can quickly open a terminal and perform a browser and perform a common host lookup like host google.com, and still I get a hang. I then quickly open another terminal and do a ping -c 1 4.2.2.2 - the ping will almost always work. Other computers on the same network (windows based) do not exhibit symptoms while the issue is occurring on the ubuntu-based machine. The problem does not ever occur when connected to a university wifi connection - it seems to be particular to a Verizon DSL connection. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Connection Hangs and Inability to Perform DNS Lookups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/353474 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 337935] Re: [Jaunty] MacBook 5.1 touchpad not fully supported (Alpha 5 of Jaunty)
It seems to me like blacklisting usbhid is a poor workaround... wouldn't that prevent you from using external mice, etc. in the usual way (ie, plug it in and it works)? Would it be possible for mactel support to continue to provide a patched usbhid kernel module (as I assume the case had been prior to the patch that removed the usbhid dependency?). That seems like an appropriate workaround until there is movement on the kernel end. [Bug 347915] [NEW] Evolution is unable to authenticate to some IMAP servers over certain connections
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I just upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty. I use evolution to connect to three different mail accounts, all via IMAP: 1. A regular gmail account. 2. A google apps for your domain gmail account. 3. An IMAP account hosted by my university. When using a consumer Verizon DSL connection, I routinely am unable to connect to either google account. I am repeatedly asked for my password, and entering the correct password results in simply getting the password dialog again. The university e-mail account works fine under these circumstances, and has identical connection settings (connect using SSL, use password authentication). When connecting from my university's wireless connection, all e-mail accounts work correctly. ** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Assignee: Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: Incomplete -- Evolution is unable to authenticate to some IMAP servers over certain connections https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/347915 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 277884] Re: Various network issues (Slow, connectivity, and timeouts)
Hi, I found out after reporting this bug that it should be marked as a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/264019 . I recently got a new laptop and this still appeared to be an issue after installing all updates, etc., but not as much as I remembered it being previously. The 'new' behavior seems to be that a webpage takes a long time to load, but when it does everything comes in at once, and that the total load time is probably about what it would have been otherwise. I can test a little more thoroughly tonight when I'm at home. Disabling TCP timestamps seems to correct the (for me) undesirable behavior, but I still get odd name resolution issues which seem to be related particularly to Verizon's name resolution/ad feature, where ads are displayed when a DNS lookup fails. I frequently get "failed" lookups for numerous domains that REALLY should not fail, like google.com. This doesn't seem to happen as much (or at all) for Windows and OSX boxes on the network, but it could be my imagination since I primarily use Ubuntu. I don't use the internet enough on my Hardy box to tell if it happens to it or not. -- Various network issues (Slow, connectivity, and timeouts) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 284530] [NEW] Writing in xournal lags or doesn't complete and selection boxes render incorrectly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xournal This may be a similar issue to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xournal/+bug/19, however the proposed workarounds (disabling xinput and discard core events) do not work. [Bug 277884] [NEW] Various network issues (Slow, connectivity, and timeouts)
Public bug reported: After upgrading from hardy to intrepid, I am having various network issues which may or may not be related. Applications using HTTP like wget, firefox, and apt seem to have problems fetching files and resolving host names. The issue is generally sporadic, ie. the applications can resolve www.google.com but not mirror.umoss.org. Sometimes the names will resolve, but when they do, the connection times out or is unacceptably slow (ie, apt-get reports speeds of 30 bytes/sec for my on-campus mirror).
