I am on the PPA. I applied updates and I seem to have regained the
power meter.

[Bug 1162706] [NEW] Power indicator gone missing.

2013-04-01 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

After installing yesterday's Ubuntu GNOME 13.04 daily image, I had a
power indicator, but somewhere between completing the installation and
now, I've lost it. I have installed a few other applications, but
nothing I would expect to interfere. All extensions have been disabled.
No change whether I'm on battery on AC power.

I do still receive low power notifications through the notifications
subsystem.

[Bug 973971] Re: vsync is not enabled, despite what CCSM tells me

2012-04-18 Thread Jason Wagner
It already appears to be enabled: Synchronization with vertical
refresh (swap intervals) is set to Always synchronize with vertical
refresh, application chooses the minimum swap interval.

I tried setting it to both Initial swap interval 0/1 settings, but all
three settings gave the same visible tearing in fast moving video
updates.

[Bug 974776] Re: User-configured wallpaper setting wiped out after today's updates

2012-04-05 Thread Jason Wagner
Grah, I just realized I have a completely new set of wallpapers. I
guess that's why they went missing.

I would hope this would be handled more gracefully, but since the
wallpapers are not going to be moved, removed, updated or replaced after
release, I suppose there isn't much of a bug here.

2012-04-05 Thread Jason Wagner
I filed this against gnome-shell, but I just applied today's updates to
a VM with Unity:

After installing the updates, the Unity bar (and dash, when exposed)
turned purple.

After a reboot, the wallpaper was now black.

Would be interesting to see if other user profiles on the same machine
would also be affected.

[Bug 973133] [NEW] Finger touch input is not registered correctly

2012-04-04 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 64bit on an HP Elitebook 2760p. This
occurs under Unity and gnome-shell, and I imagine any other DE. I am
not sure what software provides the functionality I am discussing below,
so please assign the bug accordingly.

What is expected: When I use my finger tips to interact with the
system, I expect the cursor to move to where my touch was registered.
If I tap, I expect a click to be sent at the location where I tapped.
If I tap and drag, I expect the cursor to follow my input.

What happens instead: The cursor does not first move to where the tap
was registered. When I tap, a click is sent to whatever happens to be
below where the cursor is currently positioned. Tap and drag, again,
starts from the location where the cursor was previously located, and
uses a strange acceleration (the mouse cursor moves further away the
faster I drag). In clearer terms, the touchscreen is behaving less like
a tablet and more like a big, dumb trackpad.

Despite these issues, the system's included stylus still functions
exactly as expected.

This was working as expected earlier in beta, and changed sometime after
mid-February, when I originally installed Ubuntu from a then-current
daily ISO. I had not used the installation for some time and recently
discovered the issue. I had other issues with that installation, so I
thought it wouldbe best to reinstall from today's daily ISO and ran
'aptitude full-upgrade'. The issue persists. Therefore, I believe this
is a regression, and not something specific to my machine.

[Bug 973971] [NEW] vsync is not enabled, despite what CCSM tells me

2012-04-04 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

from 'lspci':
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core
Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)

Was using DOSBox earlier and I noticed that vsync was not enabled. I
can also see vsync is not enabled while I type at the terminal wrapped
by gnome-shell (visible tearing in the cursor block as I type).

I installed CCSM and verified that Sync to VBlank was already enabled.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

[Bug 973979] [NEW] gnome-shell incorrectly renders desktop viewport

2012-04-04 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch)
Release:12.04

--

Sometimes, gnome-shell incorrectly renders the desktop viewport. This
most recently happened when I moved a terminal window into a new
workspace using the CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+Down keyboard shortcut. (I do not
remember what may have triggered it the first time I encountered it, but
I do work with multiple workspaces frequently).

The first time it happened, the mouse was trapped into the secondary
viewport, so mousing up to 'Activities', the clock, the notification
area elements or the user menu was impossible. Reloading the shell
(pressing ALT+F2, typing 'r', then pressing Enter) did not clear it up.
To recover, I had to drop to a console (CTRL+ALT+F1), log in, and issue
'sudo reboot' (I'm sure there's a less drastic workaround, but really, I
shouldn't have to know what that is).

This reoccurred after a clean installation on the same machine. This
time, the mouse could roam freely between the viewports.

[Bug 964052] [NEW] mdadm: created as /dev/md0, becomes /dev/md127 after reboot.

2012-03-24 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

-- lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch)
Release:12.04
--

-- apt-cache policy mdadm
mdadm:
  Installed: 3.2.3-2ubuntu1

--

-- Environment
Ubuntu 12.04 Server Edition 64bit (installed from the 20120323 daily ISO)
Installed into a guest running on VirtualBox 4.1.10, hosted on Windows 7.
Disk configuration:
1 SATA controller
1 20GB HDD (used at / mount point)
5x 512MB HDD (used to simulate RAID5 array)
--

-- What action I took
On an untouched installation, I install mdadm, and attempt to create a RAID5
array with this command:

sudo mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=5 --raid-devices=5 /dev/sdb
/dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde /dev/sdf

After confirming that I wanted to create the array, mdadm reported success. I
initialized a file system on it, mounted it, and created a simple text file
containing 'Hello World' on it. Then, I reboot.
--

-- What I expected to happen
mdadm would reassemble the array at boot time as /dev/md0.
--

-- What happened instead
mdadm reassemled the array at boot time as /dev/md127.
--

It took a great deal if hunting around to discover that the array had
actually been assembled. I forget what command I issued that finally
tipped me off to the existence of the assembled array, but running 'sudo
mdadm --detail /dev/md127' confirmed that it was the array I had just
built. I mounted the array and viewed the contents of the text file to
confirm.

This did not occur when I built my array on my test and production
servers running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64bit, so I am calling this new and
unexpected behavior, and filing it as a bug.

2012-03-24 Thread Jason Wagner
'mdadm.conf.txt' shows some manually made changes I was attempting to follow
after reading this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?s=b6e090eae70ded837a35d33a855bf21bp=11623570postcount=22

However, the alterations have no effect on the end result. mdadm still
reassembles the array as /dev/md127, which is undesirable.

[Bug 964052] Re: mdadm: created as /dev/md0, becomes /dev/md127 after reboot.

2012-03-24 Thread Jason Wagner
Reinstalling from the same ISO, I used guided partitioning to completely
wipe the root partition and reinstall the system. At the same time, I
also told it to mount the array.

After installation, my array is mounted and I see this in /etc/fstab:

# /media/raid was on /dev/md0 during installation
UUID=c3cc60a8-e441-4c68-a59d-ee6bacaf1e34 /media/raid ext4defaults
  0 2

Sure enough, the array is now assembled as /dev/md0. Of course, I
shouldn't have to do that when I told mdadm that I wanted the array to
be /dev/md0 in the first place.

2012-03-24 Thread Jason Wagner
I had a question in IRC (#ubuntu+1) about what the untouched mdadm.conf
looked like after building the array but before I altered it. To undo
the changes I made, simply remove the commented and uncommented DEVICE
lines.

Again, this change had no visible effect on how the array was
reassembled.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

to be said about this, so please give 140 inboxes a rest. If this still

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI graphics driver

2010-05-04 Thread Jason Wagner
* what testing was done before transitioning to 'plymouth' for lucid was green
lighted for an LTS of all things
* why did Canonical not investigate the true number of users affected
* do we expect this to be resolved for lucid
* if not, what do we need to do to prove there is community interest in having
the solution backported for lucid

an ugly bootscreen that appears for less than 10 seconds may seem
unimportant, but this an LTS release, and a very large number of users
really will hit this, therefore it is a big issue. I cannot stress
that enough.

The Canonical folks believe they have delivered a fix to the title of
this bug. Let's let this one lie.

I corrected the erroneous linking of my bug as a duplicate of this bug.
Now, it is its own bug. If you are affected by plymouth's poor choice
of resolution when using a proprietary display driver, please subscribe

2010-04-26 Thread Jason Wagner
All that has been achieved so far is the logo looks slightly less
terrible when plymouth chooses the worst possible video mode. That
might be acceptable if Lucid is going to ship with this bug still open,
but it does not resolve the bug.

plymouth to display the splash screen in our native resolutions with
full color depth when using proprietary drivers, as it does when we
disable the proprietary drivers.

Please see the bug description and the descriptions of the duplicate
bugs for evidence.

[Bug 558875] Re: compiz broken with latest updates and nvidia display config

2010-04-09 Thread Jason Wagner
True, I can suffer with any other multi-mon mode if I must have Compiz,
but I prefer Xinerama. As I said earlier, Compiz has worked with
Xinerama on this hardware as recently as Beta 1 + a few days of updates.
This incident came from the 20100331.2 daily ISO with updates from the
daily firehose.

The bug you linked appears to be for nvidia driver 180. I'm using
whatever driver is recommended by the proprietary drivers window
(either 185 or 190, I can't confirm right now). Are we sure this might
not be a separate bug?

[Bug 559726] [NEW] clicking corner of window no longer closes window

2010-04-09 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Just grabbed a deluge of updates today and noticed right away that I was
unable to click the corner of the window to close it.

This breaks consistency with all previous versions of Ubuntu, and from
my experience, consistency with other operating systems (Windows has
accepted corner clicks since Windows 95, probably further than that).

Is there a justification for this sudden behavior change during beta on

[Bug 558875] [NEW] compiz broken with latest updates and nvidia display config

2010-04-08 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm not positive which broke me, but here's what I did:

Installed latest updates.
Configured secondary display (Seperate X Screen/Xinerama).
Logged off and back in for changes to take effect.

After logging in, I have no desktop effects. From System Preferences
Appearance Visual Effects, 'None' is selected. Attempting to enable
either 'Normal' or 'Extra' effects results in a message box that reads,
The Composite extension is not available. Same experience after a
reboot.

I suffer from the ongoing plymouth/nouveau issues that prevent me from
booting with the second display attached, and didn't get around to
reconfiguring until just now. However, I did previously have this same
configuration on this computer since Beta 1 was released.

Further, the UI doesn't handle the fault gracefully -- clicking the OK
button on The Composite extension is not available dialog does
nothing, I must close it using the window control. The radio button
retains the position I clicked on, which implies that effects are
actually enabled, despite the error I just received.

[Bug 551013] Re: ubuntu-logo on VGA fb (as with nvidia or fglrx binary drivers) does not display crisply

2010-04-07 Thread Jason Wagner
opengeek, Tesselode was assisting wavded. He was not insisting that the
solution is not to use proprietary drivers.

I'm pretty sure using nouveau with plymouth and the proprietary driver
under X is not possible. Even if it were, it would still break the
seamless transition, which AFAIK, is the point of using plymouth. We'd
be just as well served by the old usplash.

Have we considered moving this bug upstream? Does this occur under
Debian or other distributions?

[Bug 553825] [NEW] nouveau: hangs on boot if second monitor is present

2010-04-02 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Booting to the Ubuntu Alpha 3, Beta 1 and 20100331.2 Live CDs, Ubuntu
hardlocks when plymouth should transition from the bootsplash to the X
session (the bootscreen stays up, appears completed but has stopped
animating, while the disc reads a bit longer, before eventually
hardlocking). This occurs consistently on every boot. Both of my
displays are connected by DVI, but I am unsure if this makes any
difference.

I workaround the issue by disconnecting my secondary display, complete
the installation, boot into the OS, apply any pending updates, reboot,
and install the restricted NVIDIA driver. Once installed, I can
reattach the display and boot into Ubuntu without issue.

For reference, I am affected by Bug #43710, which provides a similar
experience under the old 'nv' driver for Ubuntu pre-Lucid. That bug was
closed as 'wontfix'. However, under that issue, I wouldn't hardlock --
I could press Ctrl+Alt+Del, and the computer would eventually reboot.

I would think this would be a blocking bug.

[Bug 553831] [NEW] ubuntu boot menu and plymouth splash screen logo inconsistency

2010-04-02 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

Apologies if I filed this against the wrong package, please reroute as
necessary.

When booting from a Ubuntu Live CD, the rebranded Ubuntu graphic shows
the smaller 'logo' with colors filling in the people forming the circle.
However, whether you select to boot to the live environment or to simply
install Ubuntu, the splash screen displayed by plymouth shows a higher
resolution Ubuntu graphics, but the logo is not colored.

I don't really have a preference, but it seems pretty unprofessional if
the first two logos a new user sees as inconsistent.

[Bug 553835] [NEW] gdm logon screen and ubuntu desktop theme color inconsistency

2010-04-02 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The gdm theme uses light gray panels and input boxes. However, the
default Lucid theme is Ambiance, a very dark theme. Seems very
unprofessional that the panel colors in the logon screen do not match
the panel colors in the Ambiance theme. It wouldn't be as shocking if
the default theme were Radiance.

Personally, I would think the dark colors used by gdm in Karmic would be
a closer fit, though they probably don't match Ambiance.

[Bug 553842] [NEW] proprietary driver are in use when no prop drivers are installed

2010-04-02 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Apologies for filing against 'ubuntu-desktop'. I am unsure what package
contains the restricted driver applet. Please redirect as necessary.

After performing a clean installation, Ubuntu notifies me that
restricted drivers are available. I click the tray icon and am taken
to the Hardware Drivers applet, which proudly displays Proprietary
drivers are being used to make this computer work properly. However,
when I look at the details below, I can see that no restricted drivers
are actually activated. Shouldn't that statement correctly reflect how
my computer is currently configured?

Perhaps, Proprietary drivers may be installed to take advantage of
extended functionality of your computer hardware or something similar,
and the reverting to the current text when at least one driver is
installed?

[Bug 553854] [NEW] plymouth: after installing proprietary nvidia driver, splash screen displays in low color/low resolution mode

2010-04-02 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

While using the 'nouveau' driver during live CD installation, or after
installation, plymouth displays the very pretty rebranded ubuntu logo at
my native resolution, and supports a clean transition into the gdm logon
screen.

As soon as I install the proprietary NVIDIA driver (I only tested with
(version current) [Recommended], this is 190 or 195, I believe, I'm
sure the logs will indicate), plymouth displays the Ubuntu logo in what
appears to be a 256-color mode, the resolution appears to be 640x480.

I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this further, so if this isn't
immediately clear or a duplicate, you may need to provide detailed
instructions if you need additional information from me.

[Bug 553860] [NEW] Ubuntu installs nvidia 173 driver rather then latest when enabling Compiz

2010-04-02 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

On a clean installation of Lucid from 20100331.2 daily Live CD, I
attempted to enable Extra visual effects from the Appearance
Preferences window. Ubuntu searched for drivers, and then installed the
nvidia 173 driver, rather than the current version (I believe, 195).

If the current version is marked [Recommended] in the Hardware Drivers
applet, shouldn't we follow our own advice and prefer it?

[Bug 553864] [NEW] 'F10' keystroke captured by Terminal window

2010-04-02 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: htop

htop displays a list of keyboard shortcuts along the bottom of the
screen. 'F10' allegedly closes htop, but this is impossible from
Ubuntu's Terminal window, which captures the F10 key to open the menu.

In testing, I found the F10 key inconsistently opened menus across
different applications, without any apparent consistency. For example,
F10 opened menus in gEdit and Nautilus, but didn't open menus in
Firefox.

This seems like a poor choice for a hotkey, since there are faster and
more efficient ways to open these menus (ALT+arrows to walk them,
ALT+marked letter to jump straight to a desired menu, etc)..

I didn't know where to start taking down Goliath, but I figured I'd
start with the package I first noticed it in. Please reassign as
necessary.

accept the VirtualBox Guest Additions.

[Bug 43710] Re: nvidia card: hangs on start gdm if a second monitor on DVI-I is present

2010-03-27 Thread Jason Wagner
Still reproduces with 20100326 live CD.
Again, disconnect second display, and I'm able to get into X.

Is anyone looking at this? What further information can I provide?

[Bug 540015] Re: X Fails to start once VirtualBox Guest Additional Drivers is installed

2010-03-19 Thread Jason Wagner
I can confirm the following:

I can clean install Alpha 3 from ISO, install the Guest Additions and
reboot without repro. I can then apply updates from the daily fire
hose, and hit the issue.

I just reproduced this with Beta 1 -- because it includes all the
updates already, the issue reproduces as soon as you install the Guest
Additions and reboot.

[Bug 381164] Re: database disk image is malformed

2009-10-14 Thread Jason Wagner
I ran into this error after doing an unclean shutdown on my Thinkpad
T400 running ubuntu 9.04. After restarting my machine, I was seeing
errors in evolution and it was unable to load my inbox. The error was:

Error while opening store spooldir://var/spool/mail -- database disk
image is malformed.

To solve this problem, I closed Evolution and I ran the command from
Olivier Berger in comment #18. After installing sqlite3, the command ran
and told me that I had issues with my spool directory (duh). This helped
me find the location of that folders.db file.

/home/jason/.evolution/mail/spooldir/var/spool/mail/folders.db

I first backed up this file to my desktop and then did a rm folders.db.
After restarting Evolution a few times, my mail was back and everything
works again.

Thanks!
