I can reproduce a similar behavior. Until yesterday, the boot process
got stuck after the SYSFS warnings. Since yesterday, the messages
disappear after the KMS mode switch and there is only a blank screen
with a blinking cursor. In console 7 I get a bank screen and, some
minutes after I get a plymouth with process (...) killed by STOP
signal. I don't know how to gather more information as I cannot log
into the system.

I did not have any flickering with Jaunty stable. It would be better
upgrading the video drivers only since Karmic is pretty unstable now.
Try the drivers from the ubuntu-x-swat ppa:

Anyway, if you want to upgrade to karmic you don't have to format. Just open a

[Bug 392680] [NEW] Grub2 error setting resolution to 1440x900 in Thinkpad T400

2009-06-26 Thread Javier Cabezas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

I'm using the latest Karmic packages and I'm using grub2 successfully.

However I cannot set the resolution to 1440x900 in grub2 (it works with
the KMS and in the X.org). The screen shows a bunch of random pixels,
although Linux boots a few seconds after. The higher resolution that is
shown properly is 1280x800

I have noticed that it happens when I unplug the laptop too. I don't
know if it is related with the brightness lowering performed by the
desktop. After the usual 20 seconds of flickering the computer is not
usable for 2-3 minutes (the Xorg process uses the 100% of the CPU).

[Bug 269302] Re: At the GDM scree, Dell 610 laptop screen remains on while on a docking station and with an external screen connected

2008-09-18 Thread Javier Cabezas
This is not a xserver-xorg-video-intel problem since it works after you
log in. The problem is caused by the lack of dynamic display
configuration support in the packaged GDM (2.20). A new version is being
developed with support for dynamic configuration, but it is not clear
which version will be included in GNOME 2.24:

[Bug 262050] [NEW] lsb_release takes a lot of time and is being used during the boot

2008-08-27 Thread Javier Cabezas
Public bug reported:

I have been using bootchart to detect hotspots in the boot process.

I have found that lsb_release takes up to 15 secs the first time it is
called (from kernel-helper - update-grub). And around 5 seconds the
next time (called from jockey-gtk).

The first time it is only needed to set the titles for the entries in
the grub file menu.lst. I have changed /usr/sbin/update-grub as follows:

- title=$(lsb_release --short --description 2/dev/null) || title=Ubuntu
+ title=$(cat /etc/issue.net 2/dev/null) || title=Ubuntu

jockey uses it to get the distribution ID (Ubuntu in this case) and
its version (8.10). I have not found an easy way to fix this one. The
code is in /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/jockey/oslib.py

With the aforementioned change in update-grub I have shaved 5 seconds
off the boot time.

[Bug 255342] [NEW] Freedesktop's autostart makes (almost) impossible having both KDE4 and GNOME installed in the same machine

2008-08-06 Thread Javier Cabezas
Public bug reported:

I found some annoyances while trying the new KDE 4.1 in Ubuntu Intrepid:

- When I started the KDE4 session, many applications launched
automatically (AWN was especially annoying since it does not behaves
well with the KDE 4 compositor). They are located in ~/.config/autostart
so you cannot enable/disable them in a session-specific way. Therefore,
I had to backup this directory and remove the GNOME-only entries.

- When I switched back to my GNOME session, some KDE applications
launched automatically (Kwallet, etc.) so I had to repeat the previous
step but removing the links to KDE applications this time.

Currently, every time I want to check the progress of the newly released
KDE packages I have to modify the contents of the directory, change the
session, modify the directory again and switch back to the GNOME
session. That is preventing people from having both Desktop Environments
installed in the same machine or using isolated applications from the
other Desktop Environment.

How could this be fixed?

[Bug 141593] Re: Gnome-panel fails to load applets after re-login

I confirm this bug. Killing eds and bonobo processes before logging in
fixes the problem for me, too.

It seems that here a

it is the solution. I hope a fix is released before Feisty is launched
by the end of this month.

[Bug 77233] Re: Feisty: unbootable after dist-upgrade

2007-01-06 Thread Javier Cabezas
I have no lvm nor raid (mdadm) packages installed. I attach my fstab and
these are the contents of my lilo.conf (I execute lilo like this: lilo
-b /dev/sda):

boot=/dev/sda3
default=Ubuntu

map=/boot/map
delay=10

image=/vmlinuz initrd=/initrd.img
  root=/dev/sda3
  label=Ubuntu

[Bug 77233] Re: Feisty: unbootable after dist-upgrade

2007-01-03 Thread Javier Cabezas
My computer is a Macbook with an Intel Core Duo processor. I have
changed the resolution of the framebuffer and now I can see more
messages. The problem seems caused by the initramfs image:

...
Usage: modprobe [-v] [-V] [-C config-file] [-n] [-i] [-q] [-Q] [-b] [-o
modname] modname [parameters...]
modprobe -r [-n] [-i] [-v] modulename ...
modprobe -l -t dirname [ -a modulename ...]
...
mount: Cannot read /etc/fstab: no such file or directory
...
Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ...
mount: Mounting /root/dev on /dev/.static/dev failed: no such file or directory
Done.
mount: Mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
mount: Mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory

[Bug 77233] Feisty: unbootable after dist-upgrade

2007-01-03 Thread Javier Cabezas
Public bug reported:

I have dist-upgraded my Macbook to Feisty from Edgy and I am not able to
boot anymore. My box freezes after the USB detection scripts:

usb 5-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
...

I have read some forum threads and launchpad bugs about initramfs
problems that are solved by downgrading this package to 0.69, but it
doesn't fix my problem. It only causes the initramfs console to show up
after being unable to mount the root fs.

It crashes with 2.6.19-7 and 2.6.20-2 kernels and with 0.85-5 and
0.69-26 initramfs-tools.
