[Bug 1812527] Re: [bionic][regression] gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed(self=NULL) called from _switchWorkspaceDone() [windowManager.js:1787]

2019-03-16 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
On my end, I haven't been able to reproduce this so far with Ubuntu
Appindicators disabled. It's very stable for me now. I am not 100% sure
this is the fix for me, time will tell. But it's definitely more stable
and possibly even fixed now.

[Bug 1812527] Re: [bionic][regression] gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed(self=NULL) called from _switchWorkspaceDone() [windowManager.js:1787]

2019-03-06 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
@Daniel, I understand that you want to reproduce it. However, if you
aren't experiencing this bug, then that tells me you don't have a
hardware configuration that is affected by it. If you're affected,
reproducing it is very easy - simply use the keyboard shortcut
designated for switching up or down to another workspace. Every time I
do this, I have a one in five chance of GNOME crashing. It's so common
that I have no chance of NOT reproducing it.

As for apps, if it matters, I only have Firefox, Thunderbird, and gnome-
terminal open at any one time.

@Daniel, this bug has absolutely nothing to do with using an Android
Emulator. I literally get this crash every five minutes, and I've never
used emulation or virtualization of any kind on either of my machines. I
think the Android Emulator was just a red herring.

[Bug 1812527] Re: gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed(self=NULL) called from _switchWorkspaceDone() [windowManager.js:1787], often when running Android emulator (QEMU)

2019-02-27 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I think we need to completely remove Android Emulation from the title
and description. I never use that, nor have I ever, and I see this crash
constantly. It's EXTREMELY frustrating.

What do you guys need from us in order to help us track this issue? I
want to do what I can to help get this fixed.

Disabling animations seemed to resolve it for me too. But now switching
workspaces just feels very odd without it.

Since this is a regression (the bug was definitely not present at the
time of initial release) I really hope this gets fixed. I have two
systems with this problem.

[Bug 1718729] [NEW] Black screen with a few white pixels on Virtualbox VM

2017-09-21 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 17.04 from a daily image downloaded yesterday in a
Virtualbox VM (Host Ubuntu version is 17.04). The installation works
fine and without any issues. However, when I install all the updates and
reboot, I am no longer able to log in. GDM doesn't start. Instead, I see
a completely black screen with a few (one or two) white pixels. I am
still able to SSH into the installation after this.

Steps to reproduce:
* Create a Virtualbox VM
* Install Ubuntu 17.10 from daily image (I downloaded mine on 9/20/2017 @
12:49pm Eastern)
* Install all updates (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade)
* Reboot

[Bug 1508146] Re: alt + left/right arrows switch between tty consoles, cannot disable

2017-09-13 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
In my case, I am also using keepassxc. But I'm using the AppImage
version rather than the Snap package. (The Snap version doesn't seem to
be able to display a status/tray icon, while the AppImage version does).

It's possible keepassxc is related, or it's a coincidence.

[Bug 1627808] Re: Please enable e10s (multi-core CPU processing) support

2017-08-11 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
@est31, that's great news. That means if Canonical doesn't disable this
addon by default, Mozilla will.

Should I submit a patch somewhere to remove this addon as a dependency?
It seems to me that there's no value here, all it really does at this
point is slow down the browser. I don't see any logical reason to
include an addon by default that will only make people's experiences
worse.

[Bug 1589401] Re: cannot view wifi networks after re-enabling wifi

2017-03-01 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Network Manager is the culprit, not anyone's routers. This is evident by
the fact that earlier versions of Ubuntu didn't experience this issue,
this issue happens regardless of which router we're connecting to, it
happens regardless of which location we are at, and the underlying issue
is that Network Manager cannot see ANY access points, not just the one
we normally connect to. There is literally no scenario in which it is
someone's router that is causing this.

Again, you shouldn't need to restart network manager or the applet. You

sudo iwlist scan

The applet should be doing this as soon as the machine wakes up, but
it's clearly not.

I still run into this problem from time to time. On my end, I resolve it

I'm under the impression that when resuming from suspend, Network
Manager isn't automatically scanning for access points.

[Bug 606365] Re: unable to import config with inlined ca, cert, key or tls-auth

2016-12-06 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
This is working for me now. When I import into Network Manager, it
literally tells me which line is the problem now, and whatever line that
is, I comment it out and it works. Before, it would just tell me that
there was an issue importing but it wasn't specific. But at least now,
Network Manager helps me figure out the issue. I recently switched to
Ubuntu GNOME, so I'm not sure if there's something specific with the
GNOME implementation that displays specific errors, or if Network
Manager has changed. At least it's working for me now, albeit with
manual intervention being required.

In my opinion, the real issue at this point is that even though
commenting out some lines helps, each line is valid and should be
accepted. If I export an .ovpn file and use it via the command line, it
works without issue (even without commenting out anything). In my view,
if the config file is valid enough for OpenVPN itself, it should surely
be valid for Network Manager. Perhaps the OpenVPN spec has updated and
Network Manager hasn't been updated to match?

2016-08-08 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I'm still having this problem even after all the latest updates. The
status says "fixed released" but I'm still facing this issue. I'm using
Ubuntu MATE 16.04. This doesn't happen every time, but sometimes when
resuming from suspend, I cannot type my password. The work-around that
works for me is to "switch user" and then log in as myself. This will
allow me to resume my session, but my mouse cursor is invisible for a
while, but comes back eventually. I think the "fix released" status
should be removed as this is clearly not fixed.

2016-05-13 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
@Brad, are you using Ubuntu MATE by chance? I've long suspected that the
MATE desktop environment (or at least Ubuntu MATE) has its own
flickering issue that is not related at all.

[Bug 1522922] Re: Screen flickering in Intel i915 driver

2016-04-24 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I found something interesting that may or may not be valuable. From what
I can gather so far, we're dealing with two flicker issues. One affects
only Ubuntu MATE, the other affects regular Ubuntu as well. For me, I've
been able to work around the problem in Ubuntu MATE by disabling
tlp.service and rebooting. After I do this, I no longer deal with any
flickering at all whatsoever. This work around won't work for everyone,
but if you are hitting the bug in Ubuntu MATE (since Ubuntu MATE
features tlp.service by default) this may work for you.

Even though disabling tlp.service fixes it for me, this is still a
kernel bug, because I can also fix this issue by side-loading an
unsupported kernel without disabling tlp.service and that fixes it too.
For whatever reason, tlp.service is triggering something in the kernel
causing a flicker.

[Bug 1488426] Re: High CPU usage of kworker/ksoftirqd

2016-01-23 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Kernel 4.4 solves the problem for me. I used the kernel from the following site:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/2016-01-11-wily/

I hope that this gets fixed in Ubuntu-proper so that I don't need to
rely on a PPA for my system to work properly, though.

[Bug 1488426] Re: High CPU usage of kworker/ksoftirqd

2016-01-22 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
HI guys, I'm being bit by this too in Ubuntu 15.10. I have a System76
Lemur (2015, Skylake) and one of my cores is always at 90% or above
usage, unless I plug in a USB device, in which case the problem goes
away.

I tried installing kernel 4.3 from the mainline repo, but with that
kernel, my system won't even boot at all.

[Bug 1170330] [NEW] Kubuntu Font Settings "Defaults" Button Does Not Restore Defaults

2013-04-18 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu currently has customized fonts, in particular, the "Ubuntu"
font. If you change the fonts to something else by going to System
Settings > Application Appearance > Fonts, the "Defaults" button will
not change the fonts back to the Kubuntu default. Instead, it changes
the fonts back to the KDE defaults.

If you change the fonts to something else, there is no way to return to
the Kubuntu defaults for the fonts unless you write down the settings
before changing the fonts and change them back manually.

Recommended solution:
Change the "Defaults" button on the font settings section of System Settings to
restore the font settings that Kubuntu ships with, instead of defaulting to
KDE's defaults which do not match what Kubuntu ships with.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-12-05 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I'm unsubscribing from this bug. This is ridiculous. This bug will NEVER
be solved because everyone assumes that each type of crash is a
different bug, refusing to believe the possibility that one single bug
can affect different chipsets/hardware in different ways (completely
freezing some, but not others). Until this bug gets high-level Canonical
attention, the only hope anyone has is for an upstream fix to magically
come down in the updates and solve it, assuming of course this isn't
Ubuntu-specific. Good luck everyone.

[Bug 1063969] Re: NVIDIA does not work with framebuffer drivers

2012-11-23 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I think the biggest issue with this bug is that without the splash
screen, I see errors and ugly all over the screen. It doesn't bother me
personally, because my system works fine. But to a new or inexperienced
user, this may make them think something is wrong. At the very least,
this error text needs to be hidden. Users should NEVER see such things
unless they press tab or escape to show boot messages. I don't care if
it's just a blank screen for now, but at least hide the messages.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-08-28 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I still firmly believe that the reason this bug has not been fixed is
because the developers assume the different symptoms represent different
bugs. It's entirely possible that the same bug could affect different
chipsets/hardware combinations differently. To not at least consider
this possibility is not only delusional, but weak troubleshooting.

This comment string is so long I've lost whether or not anyone has tried
the latest in the 3.4.x kernel series. That is the latest kernel to be
declared the next LTS release by the kernel team. I have mostly switched
to Arch Linux (which uses a much newer kernel) and I've not had a single
issue on any of my machines, on several different chipsets. Considering
the LTS status of kernel 3.4, I highly recommend it to be considered for
emergency adoption into 12.04 (after it is tested of course).
Considering I haven't had this issue in Arch Linux, that only leaves two
possibilities. One, an Ubuntu-specific code commit is causing the issue,
or two, it's upstream with the kernel and a newer one should be
considered.

2012-07-06 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
@Steve Riley: No offense, but this is ridiculous. You're assuming that
just because the symptoms are a bit different, that we're dealing with
more than one bug. It's not out of the question to consider that one bug
could affect different systems different ways. This line of thinking may
be what's holding you back and the reason why no results have been
achieved. There is one thing in common though, a kernel update fixes it
for everyone here that has tried it, regardless of differing symptoms.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-03 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
@Tim:
I completely agree. I am currently using Arch Linux. I love it. I've been
considering trying out Kubuntu again, since Arch seems to be a moving target
all the time. However, with bugs like this, there's no way I can consider it.
Even if it does get fixed, it will only be fixed due to user outcry and not any
form of quality standards (which seem to be completely absent). On the Xubuntu
VM I have installed, I've had this lockup with just Leafpad and Thunar open.

I honestly feel that if it was an employee that marked a bug of this
magnitude as "WONTFIX", they should be fired. If it was a volunteer that
did it, they should be urged to stop contributing. If their heart is not
in this distro any longer, they should find something they are
passionate about and enjoy more. Sweeping an issue like this under the
rug is extremely damaging not only to the reputation of this
distribution, but Linux as a whole.

I am more than saddened, I am disgusted by this. If the most popular
Linux distribution out there has practically zero quality assurance,
we're all screwed.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-01 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Chowno, if dpms shows enabled, then it is enabled. On mine, sometimes it
will show 0 seconds and literally blank out if I don't continue to move
the mouse (though on yours this obviously isn't the case). With mine,
I've used the trick in xorg.conf.d to disable it too, but it still re-
enables itself. One time it was disabled for a week, but it eventually
came back. Another time, it only stayed disabled for an hour. With the
dpms bug it's literally iimpossible to keep dpms disabled, no matter
what you do. I'm still fighting with it.

Chowno: Just because your system froze again, it doesn't mean that your
power management solution didn't work. I am suffering from another bug
where power management will constantly re-enable itself. You'll see this
by running "xset -q" and it will show dpms as enabled, even though you
disabled it. I recommend looking at that before discounting your own
solution.

I found this bug report today while researching the possibility of

the "Won't Fix" status. Unbelievable! I thought this was supposed to be
an LTS release?

The reasons why I stopped using Ubuntu have started coming back to me. I
guess getting the developers to take ownership of problems is still an
exercise in futility just like it used to be. I'll take another look
when 12.10 comes out.

[Bug 952521] Re: Screen blanking and dpms can't be turned off

2012-06-26 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I am having the exact same problem on one of my two laptops.

First, please note I am not using Ubuntu or Kubuntu. I am running Arch
Linux. I know this isn't an Arch Linux bug reporter, but wanted to note
that this might be an upstream issue due to my having the problem on a
different distribution.

Another thing worth noting is that my laptop with Intel graphics doesn't
seem to be bothered by this bug (though I only use that laptop around
once a week or less). My Nvidia laptop has this issue.

So I'm thinking:
Either this is a KDE bug, or an Nvidia bug.

Are you guys running Nvidia?

Although we use different distributions, our interests are the same, so
I hope we can pinpoint the issue.

[Bug 479527] Re: Dolphin does not refresh current directory for new files.

2009-11-17 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I am using Kubuntu 9.10 on my laptop, and Arch on my desktop. Both
64-bit. I am not following any symlinks when this happens, so I am not
convinced that it's related to symlinks. I have the problem with both
Kubuntu and Arch. In Kubuntu 9.10, it starts off working fine but for
some reason, something gets out of sync and the problem starts. With
Arch, the problem is always there.

For me, here are a few examples of my reproducing this problem in both
Arch and Kubuntu:

Example 1:
1.) Either set the desktop to a Folder View or include a Folder View on the
desktop
2.) Open Firefox
3.) Download a file to the desktop
4.) The download completes
5.) The file is not on the desktop
6.) Right click the desktop and click "refresh"
7.) The file you downloaded now appears

Example 2:
1.) Either set the desktop to a Folder View or include a Folder View on the
desktop
2.) Find a random file on your desktop
3.) Open Dolphin
4.) Right-click the file chosen on the desktop in step 2, and click "cut"
5.) Go into the Dolphin window and click "Paste"
6.) The file is now moved to the folder you opened in Dolphin
7.) The file is still showing on the desktop
8.) Click on the file on the desktop
9.) It will say the file is not there
10.) Right-click the desktop and click "refresh"
11.) The file disappears

Example 3:
1.) Open KTorrent
2.) Open Firefox
3.) Find a torrent to download in Firefox
4.) Send the Firefox open dialogue for the torrent to KTorrent
5.) Choose the desktop as the place KTorrent will save the downloaded torrent to
6.) KTorrent starts downloading the torrent
7.) No files have appeared on the desktop
8.) Right-click the desktop and click "refresh"
9.) The files that KTorrent is downloading now appears on the desktop

I deal with this problem in both Kubuntu 9.10 AND Arch with KDE 4.3.3,
even after reinstalling my OS completely and/or deleting my .kde and
.kde4 folders. This is extremely annoying. I have to babysit my desktop
and constantly refresh it manually to see any changes. If I never
refresh it, I will never see any changes.

[Bug 438229] Re: No USplash Appears During Boot

2009-10-01 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Kubuntu doesn't use XSplash, I thought
XSplash was for Ubuntu only? That's what I read on the Ubuntu forums
anyway. That's why I mentioned USplash, so I'm unsure if I should
correct this bug to include XSplash if that's not something that will be
in Kubuntu.

I don't know what you mean by the logging window of KDM. I see "starting
KDM" just before KDM appears.

[Bug 438229] Re: No USplash Appears During Boot

2009-09-30 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Harry, again please read my bug report more carefully. In my initial
report, I mentioned that I am running Kubuntu Karmic 64-bit. That means
that I do not have GDM, I have KDM.

Secondly, what happens is exactly as I've said, there is no usplash,
xsplash, logo, animation, picture, graphic, or anything at any point
between the starting of the computer to KDM. There is only text letting
me know what services are being started.

[Bug 438224] [NEW] On Logon, Claims Sound Devices Were Removed

2009-09-28 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

Every time I log in to my machine (Kubuntu 64-bit Karmic) I get a
message saying that I removed my sound devices, and it asks if KDE
should forget their settings. Sound works fine, and I didn't remove any
sound devices.

I don't know if it's related, but I also get a message on startup saying
that Pulse Audio failed and it was resorting back to my C-Media, though
Pulse Audio is not set up as the first item in any of my sound
configurations.

[Bug 434395] Re: Karmic Doesn't Boot Most of the Time

2009-09-25 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Sorry, here's some more information.

If my machine boots into a text mode login instead of KDM, there's
nothing more that can be done at that point; it's frozen and not even
TTY's or SSH can access it. If I do by some stroke of luck get to type
anything, I'd do "sudo reboot" and it would freeze harder with a stack
trace displayed.

The only way out of that is to press the physical reset button. Then, I
pray for KDM to appear. If it doesn't, it will freeze again and I have
to keep resetting until I get in. After resetting, I do "sudo touch
/forcefsck && sudo touch /home/forcefsck" to check my file systems.
After all that, I reinstalled from the latest daily image, and it still
fails. Sometimes the Live CD will exhibit the same behavior.

Finally, when it does come up, not all is well. At that point, if I open
up a Konsole window or switch to a TTY, I can execute commands for about
30 seconds. After that, it freezes completely. If I use any command dpkg
or apt-get related, it will freeze instantaneously.

Sorry to type walls of text but I need to make sure you guys have as
much info as possible.
