[Bug 110132] Re: Permission denied when user belongs to group that owns group writable or setgid directories mounted via nfs

2007-12-18 Thread Joakim Larsson
I just stumbled on this one which has been a problem for people where I
work for almost a year. Most people having this problem either
converted to other Linux dists such as Suse or in a couple of cases even
worse, back to Windows. People started to have two computers just to be
able to work in Ubuntu and have one that worked with the NFS network.
We looked everywhere in the network for the problem.

I think this is a Ubuntu problem using so many groups in its
configuration and I think an effort to diagnoce the problem and to
control it would be very useful and beneficial for Ubuntu. The problem
is that the NIS groups are added to the list of local groups so there is
no way to know in advance how many groups do we have.

Instead the NFS client could try to figure out what groups are of
interest for a particular RPC by examining the target directory/file
ownership or it could retry with a new set of group ID:s until all have
been tried. Today it seems that the group ID:s are sent sorted in
ascending order and no warning are produced about the chopped of group
ID:s. I think the NFS client handling could be improved.

[Bug 103283] rhythmbox 0.9.6 disregards global volume control

2007-04-05 Thread Joakim Larsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

it has happened 2-3 times the last few weeks, but I have not used
rhythmbox frequently so it might be a more common problem than I
experience.

To reproduce:

- Put Rythmbox volume control on high volume
- Put the panel volume control on low volume
- Play MP3 music using shuffel and repeat for a long time

At some occationas Rhythmbox disregards the panel volume setting and the
wakes up the whole building by just looking at the Rhythmbox volume
setting which is set to high volume. Sliding the panel volume control
does not affect the volume in the speakers while the Rhythmbox volume
slider does. Just stepping to the next song restores the normal
behaviour where both sliders are regarded together. I use Edgy on x86

That is ok, I just reported it for the developers to see, so if they got

believe that the bug either is fixed or got into stealth because of
changed dependencies to the surrounding system. Eitherway it will need a

[Bug 78301] gthumb deletes JPG picture failing to save changes

2007-01-07 Thread Joakim Larsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

The story about how I started using gthumb to organize some hundreds of
scanned pictures in JPG format.

My workflow: I used the Image-Enhance menu choice to each just to get a
common level of quality and then pressed the next button and then the
enter key four times for each picture. I am sure there are better
softwares for batch modifying of pictures but I have had no time
exploring my options right now but I am also sure gthumb can be the tool
of choice in the future it has all parts required.

Anyway, a couple of times when pressing the next button just before the
scanner finished saving the next picture made gthumb complain about
unknown picture type refusing to view it even after the scanner was
finished. Retrying pressing the Next button didnät help. gthumb didn't
crash but I had to restart it to have it accept the newly scanned
picture.

Now this is just annoying but when it also happens when going through
all pictures as desrcibed in the workflow above resulting a zero size
file it not accepatable. Luckily enough I burnt the original pictures on
a CD before starting the workflow.

I don't have a crash log since it didn't crash, all I got was a dialog
saying something like unknown picture type with some garbage data as the
type. I use a fully updated Dapper on a Pentium D machine and the 2.7.6
version of Gthumb

[Bug 15179] Re: Users should be discouraged from editing temporary files

2006-12-22 Thread Joakim Larsson
For some reason the documents saved from the web in Firefox for instance
are saved with a 600 permission while when saved from Open Office they
get 644 permission. Personally, that just lost half a day of work, I
will install a filter copying all files in /tmp with my user and 644
permission to $HOME/tmp just before /tmp is cleaned up on boot. I just
have to find the place where it is done first

[Bug 15179] Re: Users should be discouraged from editing temporary files

2006-12-22 Thread Joakim Larsson
OK, this works for me: I just changed the /etc/init.d/bootclean

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/init.d$ diff bootclean.sh bootclean.sh~
63c63
   ! -perm 644 ! -type d -print0 | xargs -0r rm -f
---
   ! -type d -print0 | xargs -0r rm -f

to not remove any files with 644 permissions. This allows me to detect
my error saving stuff in /tmp In the end this may cause /tmp overload so
Ubuntu developers might want to add a policy to copy teh files to each
users garbagecan and popup an alert that some suspisiosly looking files
were put there, or something.

[Bug 15179] Re: Users should be discouraged from editing temporary files

2006-12-22 Thread Joakim Larsson
Well, it is simple change to 'allow' people to do this without loosing
their work and the discouragement lies in the extra effort to pick the
file up from the personal garbage bin rather than from /tmp. A
preference could control this behaviour of sysvinit to be turned on or
off.

I guess your point is that this bug resides somewhere else. So maybe
it is a feature request instead. It could not be implemented as separate
script and linked in as /etc/rcS.d/S32copy-savedintmp or similar
executed before the actual cleanup because at that point the disk is not
mounted.

[Bug 15179] Re: Users should be discouraged from editing temporary files

2006-12-22 Thread Joakim Larsson
Murray:
I agree that some people may consider the aproach a bit harsh but compared to
fixing lots of userspace application that is used as helperapps for archivers,
browsers and such I think it is worth some consideration.

Fixing this is in a lot of applications will introduce more bugs and we
will have users that relies on the fact that saving a file is safe, when
it is in fact not the case as long as you have some applications still
not fixed.

Snark:
I don't understand how removing files behind the users back is a better
practice.

Alerting the user that the files have been moved to a certain quarantine
directory (I suggest the garabage bin directory) is both user friendly
and pragmatic.

Also beeing able to turn it off in the preferences will allow superuses
to rely on the system to clean up their mess after reboot.

In any case this is a change I intend to rely on so I wanted to share
it.

No problem, don't forget to open bug reports for all other affected GUI
apps also then. If MOTU decides to fix this I'd prefer the read-only
permission solution on files saved by GUI apps using helper apps. I
guess it could work in most cases by just changing the 'umask' in the
right place when starting the helper app.

[Bug 41845] Re: nvidia xorg driver stopped working when upgrading to dapper

I can confirm that one of the latest security updates for Dapper
disabled the nvidia driver on my son's computer. The error message said
too it couldn't find the nvidia driver, so I switched back to the nv
driver so now he doesn't have any DRI support for games anymore :-(

I probably need to reinstall the nvidia driver but I think the security
updates should not deactivate any video drivers applied by the user.

The nvidia driver had worked well for a long time so Dapper has no
problem with it once its installed within Dapper.

[Bug 34902] Re: Ralink Wireless USB/PCMCIA/PCI hangs PC

2006-11-19 Thread Joakim Larsson
A major source of confusion for the DLINK dwl-g122 USB WiFi dongle, I
think, is that they use another chip from rev C onwards. I have a rev C
dongle and had to compile the driver module from the latest CVS sources
at http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/rt73-cvs-daily.tar.gz to get it to
work. The rt73 driver isn't even released yet from what I can see. This
comment is written over the WiFi connection that I just brought up
manually through the network manager and by adding a few lines to the
/etc/networking/interfaces with a static IP adress. I will now test
further with DHCP based IP

[Bug 34902] Re: Ralink Wireless USB/PCMCIA/PCI hangs PC

2006-11-19 Thread Joakim Larsson
This is strange. If I startup Dapper with eth0 deactivated and rausb0
activated I get no link over the DLINK dwl-g122 using the driver
mentioned above. The interface is up but I have got no IP from the DHCP
over WiFi. What makes it work hints about a startup script problem:

Open System-Administration-Networking
Deactivate the wireless (rausb0) connection
Activate the wireless (rausb0) connection

This will hang forever unless:

Open a terminal window
Issue: sudo ifup rausb0

Now it comes up! It does not work with either method alone, they seems
both to be needed. My /etc/network/interfaces looks like this:

iface lo inet loopback

snip
iface rausb0 inet dhcp
wireless-essid myDlink524
wireless-key blablablablasecretkey

allow-hotplug rausb0

[Bug 62868] Re: swap partitions not automounted by the LiveCD

2006-11-13 Thread Joakim Larsson

I had a similar experience installing the Dapper Live CD on a PPC iMac. See:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/64934

In fact I had to turn on the swap manually before installation and even
so the installer turned off the swap during execution of partitioning
bringing the system to freeze due to too little memory. I had to to the
following trick on the Live CD ramdisk to make it work for me:

cp /bin/true /sbin/swapoff

I have no idea why the installer turned off the already working swap,

[Bug 42661] Re: installer hangs when using manual partitioning

2006-11-10 Thread Joakim Larsson
I just got a similar hang while installing Edgy from a fresh ISO and
trying to to manual partioning since I got both Mepis and Windows XP
(bad boy, bad boy) at the laptop. After some investigation in a terminal
a 'ps aux' revealed that gparted was started and that it was waiting for
a dosfsck on my Windows partition to finalize. After twenty minutes I
did a simple 'sudo killall dosfsck' and gparted continued and work as
expected thereafter. I guess my my Windows partition were unclean or
wasn't booted for so long causing some problems for gparted.

[Bug 70971] apt-get silently fails to install package

2006-11-08 Thread Joakim Larsson
Public bug reported:

I got a home network with three computers with Dapper 6.06, fully
updated.

First I installed the fuse-util package with Synaptics at my computer
and it all seemed to go ok. However the 'fusermount' executable did not
get installed. I checked the properties for the list of installed files
and I saw that it was supposed to be under '/usr/lib' after the
installation. I removed and reinstalled the package a number of times
without success.

Now I turned to apt-get and the same thing happened. No
'/usr/bin/fusermount'. I tried the same thing on one of the other

But none are available at application level, Mayby this has todo with
these lines:

[15277.217179] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 8
[15277.217194] EISA: Detected 0 cards.

But the audio is not detected here. Is it a buggy EISA detection causing
this?

Should I file another bug for the sound?

At least for the NIC there is driver that should work according to the
docs. For the audio I guess the cs4237 is supported by the available
Crystal drivers but I am not sure. I found them under PCI however bit
that might not matter and loading the NIC driver with insmod did not
help either.

An ISA bridge bug maybe?

[Bug 70657] Was not able to boot Edubuntu live CD

2006-11-06 Thread Joakim Larsson
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the Edubuntu 6.10 live ISO and burned it on a CD. Then I
put it my computer and rebooted just to see what it looked like.

The first time I got to the nice graphical login prompt but both mouse
and keyboard were dead. I could not even warm boot Ubuntu 6.06 from the
harddisk anymore but had to turn the power off completelly.

The second time I choosed the secure graphics version and that halted
whilke still in text at this point:

[17179574.12] PCI: JMB36x: Enabling dual function on :03:00.0
[17179574.144000] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 0 of device :03:00.0

[17179574.144000] PCI: Error while updating region .03:00.0/2 (e008 !=
)

I had to write this by hand on another computer before rebooting the
machine again, but I believe it to be accurat. Sadly I never got the
Edubuntu to boot at my machine. I have checked the checksums with:

md5sum -cw md5sum.txt | fgrep -v OK

without any lines slipping through. My machine has a MSI Platinum 976x
Power Up edition motherboard, a 2.88 GHz Pentium D and 512 Mb RAM. I
attach the dmesg from Ubuntu 6.06

[Bug 70467] Occationally failure to write CD-R requires reboot

2006-11-05 Thread Joakim Larsson
Public bug reported:

I burnt one ISO by right click-write to disc and it all want well and
the CD is used to install Xubuntu so I know it is ok. When I tried to
burn a second CD the drive icon never showed up on the desktop when I
inserted an empty CD-R disc. Nautilus-cd-burner informed me that it
could not find a suitable media to write the disc on but the device was
listed in the pulldown. I tried in several ways to have the drive and
media to be detected:

- pulled the firewire connector and connected it agian
- changed the CD-R disc

Lastly I rebooted and it was detected normally with same CD-R disc and i
could proceed. The error is not repeatable su I guess I had a bad Karma
for the day or something. Here is suspected lines from /var/log/syslog.
I am using a fully updated Dapper 386 installation.

[Bug 70479] Firefox/flash fights over audio device with other apps (and finally looses)

2006-11-05 Thread Joakim Larsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

To reproduce:

- Install Dapper Drake 6.06 x86 (well whatever, might not be needed)
- Install Gstreamer pacjages for MP3 etc
- Startup http://youtube.com/
- Click on the webpage to auto install the needed flashplugin for the youtube
videos (flash 7)
- Start to watch a lengthy video
- In the meantime double click on an MP3 file on the desktop so it starts to
play

[There is NO audio from the MP3!]

- Load another page in firefox without flash content

[There IS now audio from the MP3!]

- Go back to youtube.com and start the video again

[There is NO audio from the video]

- Quit the MP3 player

[There is still NO audio from the video]

So this is the bug, Firefox/flash never recovers from this state and
needs to be restarted. Problem is that people doesn't realize the cause
and thinks something is really broken. I changed the audio card and
almost reinstalled Ubuntu before I realized that it was reproduzable and
not a random error.

I don't know what software part to blame but audio apps should be able
to cope with each other.

Public bug reported:

Unfortunality this bug disappeared when I rebooted. Before I did that
I had firefox quit with a SIGSEGV fault upon klicking a link to a .pdf

row and I had to restart firefox from the panel. The last time i started
firefox with the -d switch and got a better fault output:

[Bug 60474] Re: 1280x800 resolution won't work

2006-10-16 Thread Joakim Larsson
My understanding is that the 1280x800 mode in the i810 driver, that I
just got to work on an Acer Travelmate 3002WTMi BTW, is enabled by
having this mode in the BIOS and not otherwise. The rationale behind
this, I have been told, is that the i810 driver for the 915GM has no
chance to know about DAC:s and clock settings external to the device
itself, thus it relies on the BIOS resolutions. Apparantly this is a bit
going safe-safe but since it figures out the settings when it finds the
resolution in the patched (by 915resolution) BIOS I guess it must be
possible to add in the driver too. Maybe something expensive can break
if the DAC:s and clocks are set to provide a crazy resolution, what do I
know?

So I think this is by design rather than because of a bug. File it as a
feature request.

but can't figure it out easily even with the usage printout from 'gen-

In addition, it is not easy to understand that the keymapper package
