[Bug 2055114] Re: fail2ban is broken in 24.04 Noble

2024-06-26 Thread Joris Le Blansch
@fredbcode no I don't think there is anything wrong. If you install
through apt or apt-get you will get notified of eventual missing
dependencies. If you install through dpkg -i you are on your own to
figure that out. This is nothing new of course. So once again, refer to
my method to install it and it will work.

[Bug 2055114] Re: fail2ban is broken in 24.04 Noble

2024-06-14 Thread Joris Le Blansch
@brian-murray the wiki mentioned to add proposed is sadly outdated and
for 16.04. More recent documents, show this changed radically in 24.04
so that you can cherry pick updates you want, starting with add-apt-
repository -yp proposed. This didn't work for me neither.

I did as follows:

- Open /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources and add noble-proposed
- apt update
- apt-get install -t noble-proposed fail2ban
- fail2ban now works again
- Open /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources and remove noble-proposed
- apt update

You are now safe to not accidently update other packages from proposed
if that's not wanted (ie. on a production system).

Hope this helps someone. It works for me and I can confirm that fail2ban
is working again with this approach.

[Bug 1920682] Re: Lenovo x1 Yoga freeze after stylus touches the display

2021-03-25 Thread Joris Muller
As already mentioned before, booting on kernel 5.8.0-44 fixed the issue also on
my system. I tried also with the 5.8.0-45 kernel to remove
xserver-xorg-input-wacom package but still crash. There was no way to remove
libwacom2 alone to test if it's the fallacious package, because it remove also
in the same time the gnome shell. I tried to reinstall the package, without
success.
An user on AskUbuntu (https://askubuntu.com/a/1324101/558294) suggest that the
bug was fixed on an updated version of the kernel but without detail.

I confirm also the issue on my ThinkPad X1 Yoga 3rd gen

Worked like charm before last update. Current kernel is 5.8.0-45 generic.
Freeze as soon as the sytlus approaches the screen. I tried to remove all wacom
package without success (however, reading the previous post, bug seems to be on
a kernel level).
No crash when using the screen with finger (touchscreen), only when using the

[Bug 818826] Re: backlight brightness control won't work in 2011 iMac 27"

2020-06-15 Thread Joris Muller
Found one easy solution (a least on Ubuntu 20.04) to implement manually
solution by changing grub configuration.

Edit /etc/default/grub
To the parameter GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT add "acpi_backlight=vendor"
The line should be GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash
acpi_backlight=vendor"

update grub sudo update-grub

reboot

Don't know how to implement this in ubuntu distribution. Is it possible
to create specific grub config during the installation process ?

[Bug 1875348] [NEW] dependence upon libresolv.so (libc6-dev)

2020-04-27 Thread Joris Bierkens
Public bug reported:

When trying to get the add-on TbSync to work in combination with the
add-on "Provider for CalDAV & CardDAV", I encountered a mysterious error
message, "status.service-provider-setup-failed".

After getting in touch with the maintainer of these add-ons, it turns
out that this add-on depends upon libresolv.so. Indeed I managed to
resolve the error by manually installing libc6-dev which contains this
so.

Therefore should libc6-dev be a dependency for Thunderbird?

Is there any time frame when this Ceph update will be released for
Xenial/Pike?

We are currently experiencing a bug that was fixed in version 12.2.5 (
https://tracker.ceph.com/issues/23300 ) and would love to see this
update :) .

[Bug 1574120] Re: Notebook doesn't suspend when lid is closed after update to 16.04

2016-08-18 Thread Joris van Rooij
This bug affects me as well and as many of the people in earlier
comments I have a HP laptop as well (EliteBook 840 G3).

The workaround in #5 works for me as well. Could systemd be thinking
that the laptops are docked even if they are not?

I also noticed that the folder /sys/devices/platform/dock.0 is missing
on my laptop. This folder is supposed to contain a file with the docked
status. Maybe this is the cause of our problems?

Other people affected by this: Could you check if the
/sys/device/platform/dock.0 folder is missing for you too?

Next question would be how to fix it, I don't know the answer to that...

[Bug 1452318] Re: Faulty behavior when resuming from suspend

2015-08-18 Thread Joris
I confirm this problem with xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.99.917 (the
latest version at time of writing).
When I run in SNA mode, everything works perfectly until the machine resumes
from suspend. After this everything becomes unbearably sluggish and it seems
hardware acceleration no longer works (slow scrolling, video playback doesn't
work, etc). Also once in a while I get the artifacts other people describe
(distorted fonts, weird window titles, etc). This doesn't always happen though.

This bug also seems to occur even without suspending, when using it for
sufficiently long time, probably triggered by something (at this point
not sure what).

I tried to change to UXA mode which only partly solves the problem. Here
I don't get the weird artifacts, but the hardware acceleration doesn't
seem to work at all (no video acceleration, weird scroll even in file
manager, etc).

[Bug 1459149] Re: keyboard and mouse not responding at login

2015-05-31 Thread Joris Bierkens
I have tried reverse bisecting but unfortunately the bug does not always
appear in versions <= 3.13.2. This makes it very hard and incredibly
time consuming (for me at least) to conclusively determine which commit
is the first one that solves the bug. As far as I am concerned, I'll
leave it here. I am happy that the bug is resolved on my pc and I thank
penalvch for his suggestion. If there are simple, less time consuming
ways of further resolving this issue I would not mind looking into it.

[Bug 1459149] Re: keyboard and mouse not responding at login

2015-05-30 Thread Joris Bierkens
By installing kernels using .deb packages I have learned that the issue
is resolved between kernel 3.13.2 and 3.13.3. I will now try to reverse
bisect the commits in between these kernel version (which I have never
done before).

As a side note, I could not test the issue in kernel 3.13.1; I got
completely different behaviour: after a low-res xubuntu splash screen,
the screen became garbled, after which it became completely green. The
system hung completely (I needed to hold the power button to switch it
off). This issue could be reproduced. I don't know if it is important.

[Bug 1389006] Re: [Dell XPS 8700] USB mouse and keyboard unresponsive after last update

2015-05-26 Thread Joris Bierkens
I have the same issue with a Dell Inspirion 3847. I have updated my BIOS
today (version A07) and still have the issue. If I leave the devices
plugged in at boot, the system will not respond to anything at the
(Xubuntu / lightdm) login screen, not even Ctrl-Alt-Del or Ctrl-Alt-F1.
The only way to start my system is to unplug mouse and keyboard before
boot, wait for login screen, then plug in keyboard and mouse.

Please let me know what information is required to help solve this
issue.

[Bug 1309801] Re: [xubuntu] chromium redraw issue after switching workspaces

2015-03-12 Thread Joris Bierkens
I have the same issue. For me this workaround was succesful:
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=370022#c13

It amounts to enabling hardware acceleration in Google chrome (instead of
disabling), by typing
chrome://flags
in address bar and "Enable" the "Override software rendering list". See
http://www.webupd8.org/2014/01/enable-hardware-acceleration-in-chrome.html for
details.

Also starting google-chrome with the flag --disable-gpu remedies the
issue.

Which of the two approaches should be preferred?

[Bug 1363719] Re: efibootmgr may create a duplicated boot entry, "breaking" UEFI boot.

2014-10-27 Thread Joris Claassen
I ran into the same bug on my Thinkpad 440s. Installing
http://packages.ubuntu.com/nl/trusty/efibootmgr 0.5.4 from trusty in the
live CD environment and adding the boot entry using

efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sda -p 1 -l '\EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi' -L 'ubuntu'

Works. :-) Hope this helps!

[Bug 1265192] Re: Install/reinstall wipes out all/other partitions

2014-10-12 Thread Joris
Seeing the fact that this bug has been reported in a 13.10 version (1
year old). Is it not possible to add a warning in the installation
screen? When using Windows 8.1 always use the manual setting.

Because Windows 8.x is the default Windows on new laptops and there is
no clear documentation that this could happen. More people will be
affected with this due the secure boot and therefore the need of
retrying of installation after installation to get Ubuntu booting.

I had the same problem for a while, turns out the file /etc/pam.d/vsftpd that
comes with ubuntu is buggy...
Comments the following line in /etc/pam.d/vsftpd :
auth requiredpam_shells.so

And restart vsftpd

This is the only solution that worked for me.

[Bug 1309520] [NEW] unable update 13.10 to 14.40

2014-04-18 Thread Joris Hoeksema
Public bug reported:

I keep being unable to update my Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.10.
At first it was giving me errors about packages that "had no cache" (an example
of this was a package named "zsnes", which I removed, afterwards the error
didn't show up again), but now it hangs on "Calculating changes..." in the
Distribution Update screen with the message:

"Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal."

In advance to upgrading I had already disabled my xorg-edges PPA since that
would cause trouble according to some.
Also note: Between "Preparing for upgrade..." and "Setting new software
channels..." it gives me a notice saying:

"Third party sources disabled

Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can re-
enable them after the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool or
your package manager."

I'm unsure whether this is relevant or not but it might have something
to do with it.

[Bug 769055] Re: USB-installation generates wrong fstab

2013-10-12 Thread Joris Spekreijse
Dear Phillip,

Sadly enough I can't give you an answer.
I don't know on wich of my three devices this problem occured.
My notebook and laptopr are still running Ubuntu. But they are upgraded without
a fres installation.
My PC is now running openSUSE.

Seeing that the version is now EOL and this can not happen any more due
change in technique, I would regard this report als closed.

no way... they even have standard messages now.

just create a new report and all will be fine! yeah...

Canonical seems to spread itself thin on various targeted markets, but
are neglecting their core business at the moment.

Haven't I heard that from another software company having gone the exact
same route?

[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2013-08-19 Thread Joris V.
@M. van Workum: "This is getting to a point which makes my computer
unusable."

I know the feeling. Got similar instability problems with Ubuntu ever
since 12.04, rendering the computer unusable.

12.10 and 13.04 did not fix it.

Tried to escalate within Canonical on a few occasions, but all they said
was "repro steps are too vague". While they were right, these are not
bugs to defer, since I was far from the only one.

Quite happy with Debian 7.1 now. Rock-solid, like I remember Ubuntu
being before 12.04. I don't think I will easily come back here.

[Bug 908335] Re: Kernel Hard Freezing Very Often

2013-06-21 Thread Joris V.
yea... got the same problem as well. Have reported on it many many
times. Have even sent an email to Mr. Shuttleworth's assistant (over it
- maybe indeed). Fact is, I have been more than happy with Ubuntu ever
since my definite migration from windows to 9.10. Thanks to Canonical
and its community - sincerely. I did also start making publicity for
Canonical's and the community's great efforts!

However, even though all updates went fine, I ran into the problem
mentioned here, first on 12.04. My first _clean_ install since 9.10,
mind! After rebooting and anxiously looking forward to the new
possibilities, it crashed not 10 minutes later - without installing
anything additional! Just browsing the web. Hard reset only option. It
kept on doing so...

I mostly used 11.10 in the mean time, as 12.10 did not fix the problem.
13.04 initially seemed a lot more stable on my machine. But it quickly
started to break up as well. Did I really need to back to Windows? I
wanted GIMP 2.8 and LibreOffice 4.0!

No.

Wheezy was released, and, since it was installed about two weeks ago, I
have not experienced a single crash - well one, but it was recoverable
through PTYx. It is fast, has the latest versions of the programs I
wanted to update and it seems rock-solid. Should I put in a Ubuntu
background, I might not even notice a difference at all on Gnome3. I
switched from Ubuntu to Debian because of necessity, but given
Canonical's indifference to these showstopper problems and Debian's
stability, I think I will stay...

Re: [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-01-07 Thread Joris V.
Yep... I am more and more convinced the root of this bugger is a kernel
problem.

I didn't have success with any kernel higher than 3.2, although I only
tried standard distro kernels up to now.

I did try ubuntu 12.x, the last two mints and fedora. In degrees of
stability, only ubuntu had the deep freeze this bug is about. Mint got
unstable when switching from nouveau to nvidia propriety (and nouveau is
not up to "speed" literally). Fedora was solid.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-12-23 Thread Joris V.
Good, I've written to Ubuntu's technical board (I hope the distribution
list gets monitored).

This is my mail:

Hey there,

First time I write to this list...

Thanks for co-creating Ubuntu. Have been using it since 9.10 as my main
OS. All swell and stable until upgrading to 12.04 LTS.

The system got unstable, completely freezing with only a hard reset
working to boot it back up. This happens within 10 minutes of usage,
without specific scenario's... unfortunately. 12.10 does not solve the
problem...

I'm writing because of bug #993187 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187)

It's been active since 02/05/2012 and has been put on "Won't Fix" for
the last few months.

Its heat is at 1838 and rising - making it the hottest bug around if I
queried the db well.

Can one of you please look into it - I think the best place to start is from
the bottom upwards? The bug comments at 600+ are not clean. There are lots of
persons posting with a responsive system - not valid for this report. There are
a lot who aren't though.

I offered to clean these up, but I don't have a clue how. I suppose it
is a permissions thing.

Do look into it and at least comment on it. If I can be of any non-technical
help, please advice

Thanks in advance.

Happy holidays.

Joris

PS: back on 11.10 now, which is rock-solid.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-12-21 Thread Joris V.
@AG: it is not only about Chromium / Chrome. Changing to Firefox does
not solve the problem here, as stated in #606.

The Chromium bug 145600 you link to tells the current window is
unresponsive, but that you can still minimize / restore.

This bug is about COMPLETE system lock-ups: no keyboard, no mouse, no
tty, no ssh. Only means of recovery is holding the power button and
restart the computer from BIOS POST onwards.

2012-12-20 Thread Joris V.
@renaud: your comment being out of place was already suggested in the
first six lines of this bug report, not only on comment #579.

The comments which should be posted in this thread are all about option
4.

YES, we DO experience LOTS of system lock-ups.
NO, whatever we do, i.e. change browser, change driver, change display effects,
heck, even change kernel, we STILL experience lock-ups.

like said: if you can still move the mouse, use the keyboard, TTY , SSH
or find any other means of a workaround, this thread is NOT the thread
to post in.

@canonical: how can I clean this up?

2012-12-17 Thread Joris V.
@renaud: with all due respect, but you belong to the group of people who
should not be posting in this thread. If you can still "sudo pkill",
then your system still is responsive. This thread is about COMPLETE
lockups: no mouse, no kb, no tty, no SSH possible. Holding the power
button and rebooting is the only means of recovery!

@admins / canonical: I would be willing to clean up the 500+ posts in this
thread to sift out false reports like the above and only keep the relevant
ones. How can I do this?

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-12-15 Thread Joris V.
@Kayvan: great write-up. Thanks.

But the problem is broader than intel with on-board CPU. It happens on
Intel-nVidia CPU as well, which is my set-up: a Core2Duo with an nVidia
8400M. I does not at all happen on Oneiric 11.10, which I went back to.
It starts from 12.04 and continues into 12.10.

It does not necessarily happen with "intensive" use. I had it while just
browsing the web - although the web can be "intensive" use as well on
some sites, which load up lots of flash ads and things. Both on Firefox
and on Chrome / Chromium.

I did notice that when scrolling up and down a page, the screens blinks
(i.e. goes to black and back up) for some milliseconds. Sometimes the PC
passes / recovers from such a blink, sometimes it results in this lock-
up.

To make sure: it _is_ a complete system lock-up I have: no mouse, no
keyboard, no TTY, no log-entries. Hard-reset is the only option.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-12-05 Thread Joris V.
Well, Jeremy. I do not blame you. There really is no interest from
Canonical into fixing this bug. There is no guidance, no follow-up, no
reaction.

Yes, truth is that all different comments filed here seem to appear
related, but are not necessarily so, making pinpointing the source of
this bug difficult, maybe even nigh impossible. But, please canonical,
do react then, have this followed up and try to use the snippets of
information being posted here, posted on a daily basis! This bug is
_highest_ on the heat chart! That should give it some more priority,
even if comments appear to be unrelated? If these are duplicated, at
least file a list of other bugs and dissallow comments on this one?

I still have this bug, I hoped it would have been a temporary 12.04
issue. 12.10 has the exact same problem though.

I'm on an MSI EX600 laptop with Core2Duo processor and nVidia 8400G
card.

As far as I can judge, this is a kernel thing messing up with GPU.
Something crept into the later kernels, i.e. above 3.0, shipped with
Oneiric 11.10. Oneiric is rock-solid, even with propriety nVidia driver.
Every distro I tried with a higher kernel gave problems (but Ubuntu is
the harshest - crashing where only a hard reset works). Every distro
with a kernel higher than 3.0 makes nVidia's driver unuseable on my
system.

About to sign out of this bug as well - but I'll see for a few more
weeks.

[Bug 1077874] Re: installation of ipvsadm is broken : unknown template field, can't dpkg-reconfigure

2012-11-16 Thread Joris
Hello Robie,

In fact, this is the following message from David :
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=685577#65

and the answer from Alexander (ipvsadm debian maintainer) :
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=685577#70

The truth is ipvsadm is working fine besides those little errors while
installing.

Best regards,
Joris

[Bug 1077874] Re: installation of ipvsadm is broken : unknown template field, can't dpkg-reconfigure

2012-11-12 Thread Joris
Hello,

Here's a patch that fix the "Unknown template field" errors that debconf
encounters.

However, dpkg-reconfigure ipvsadm still doesn't work as it just spits
out the following output :

# dpkg-reconfigure ipvsadm
 * ipvsadm is not configured to run. Please run dpkg-reconfigure ipvsadm
 * ipvsadm is not configured to run. Please edit /etc/default/ipvsadm

I'm not sure how to fix it myself.

Best regards,
Joris

[Bug 1074260]

2012-11-09 Thread Joris Le Blansch
OK agreed, let's stick to the Zarafa issue, which is my issue as well.
So Irving's patch should work for me as well likely ? How do I apply it
though ? Went through the ftp link but I'm not sure what's needed
exactly. I would like to help to provide reproducible results but our
server is behind a corporate F/W... Let me know what you like me to
provide and I will try to do so.

[Bug 1074260]

2012-11-09 Thread Joris Le Blansch
That might be (but I hear it happening also against other IMAP servers
in this thread) but I'm not sure how to solve this. How to implement
Irving's patch ? It doesn't seem to be installable on my Ubuntu 12.04 or
should I replace some files manually ? I think this is broader than just
TB against Zarafa. Remember a few years ago, between v 2 and 3 of TB the
same kind of issue arose at some stage (and was solved subsequently but
I can't remember in what version exactly).

[Bug 1074260]

2012-11-09 Thread Joris Le Blansch
Hi all, having exactly these same symptomps against my Zarafa 6.4.x IMAP
server. Worked always well untill TB 16.x was installed as part of my
regular updates. To make sure I have no corrupted messages or so I have
been through the repair, compacting etc. but no luck. This afternoon I
deleted my local TB profile (after having placed my mail folders in a
local TB folder) then deleted my Zarafa mail account and all associated
from the server. Booted Zarafa server freshly and recreated my email
account (got a few calls in the mean time from people getting bounces
sending me mail since my mail account was really completely removed for
the sake of the test) and then recreated my TB profile. Reimported only
my inbox folder with some 1100 msgs and synched completely being
connected with eth in the office with LAN connection to server. During
the afternoon, saw the same behaviour again (ie. redownloading all msg)
and now being connected remotely over VPN it's even more obvious with
the slower connection. Let me know if I can provide more/better details
to help on this issue. It is quite a big issue, and as we update with
Ubuntu regular updates as they come out automatically it is starting to
hit other people in the office as well.

2012-09-26 Thread Joris Van den Bossche
Hi Christopher,

Sorry that I didn't respond directly. Problem is that I don't know what
the issue was at that time (it was just getting a message from apport,
but there was nothing going wrong that I could experience). It was also
with a beta version of 11.04. In the meantime I have 12.04 (without
problems), and I am not able to test it at the moment in VirtualBox with
the latest build. So you can certainly flag it as expired or not
relevant anymore.

[Bug 925023] Re: Likewise win domain user user cannot access audio

2012-09-02 Thread Joris Le Blansch
Is there any news on this ? It is quite annoying for some of us that
have to deal with the presence of an AD server. I heard somebody
confirming that it was OK for him sinci U/G to 12.04 but I would like to
keep my float of notebooks on 11.10 for the time being and maybe go to
12.10 later this year. Roland's proposed workaround sounds acceptable to
me.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-03 Thread Joris V.
@Tim: I second that. It happens immediately during web browsing. I only
tried Firefox & Chromium.

@Jeremy: I second that as well. I switched to Fedora because of this
mess. I promoted Ubuntu in the past, but have become really afraid to do
so... this bug makes the machine utterly unusable. I'd rather recommend
users to stick to their virus- and trojan-infested Windows install. It's
slow, but at least a LOT more stable than machines having this issue...

Did anyone already try reproducing the error in a VM / fixing it by

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-12 Thread Joris V.
@Martin (cyderia8530): Your bug is not related to this one. This bug is
for people experiencing lock-ups where TTY, SSH or another means of
recovery is NOT possible, unless a HARD reset. I updated the
description.

** Description changed:

+ Update: 6/12/2012
+ This bug is about a complete system lock-up. No other TTYs can be started.
Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution is hard reset.
+
+ Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI
+ and Intel graphics.
+
+ If you are still able to TTY or SSH into other sessions, move the mouse
+ or use the keyboard, file another bug.
+
+ Thx. Joris V. (brains).
+
+
  Update: 5/21/2012
Updating the kernel to 3.3.6 as suggested by Michael in #91, the system seems
stable, no freezes yet in 5-6 hrs of using and watching videos for couple of
hrs.

  Original description:
I recently installed newly released ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit version on my
desktop. And it is frequently freezing, for the first few hours it ran smoothly
and when I started watching videos it started freezing randomly.
I have to use hard restart every time.
Initially it was only during videos but now even during normal browsing it is
freezing.

I am using on board graphics and do not have any graphics card
  installed.

Can someone please help me here, I really love the new looks of 12.04
and it bugs me not being able to use :(

  Below is my hardware configuration:
Processor: Intel CORE i3 processor (2nd generation)
  Board: Intel® Desktop Board DH67BL
  Ram: 4GB
  Graphics: On board
  HDD: 500 GB

Please let me know if you need more information, or any specific logs I
  can capture (and how).

  Thanks,
  Ketan Patil

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-05 Thread Joris V.
@Timo: I understand that the bug is difficult to describe and that the
plethora of different descriptions make it difficult to debug /
pinpoint, hence address. It does not mean canonical or the community
should not keep track of it.

This is not venting frustration - although it also is. This is a genuine
bug report, which made me move to Fedora (for the time being), since
Ubuntu is plain and simply unusable at the moment.

If this kind of stability is your first encounter with Ubuntu / Linux,
you'll never return. I checked out bug reports and sorted them on
"heat". The first bug is "Microsoft has a majority stake on OS
installs". Hardly a "bug" which you can repro as well, is it? Yet that
keeps open. I suppose as an inside joke, but still, this bug will NOT
help reach that goal...

Reopen and have it addressed. Get hold of a laptop having this problem!

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-05 Thread Joris V.
unbelievable... 264 comments and counting and this is set to "won't
fix"?!

I changed from Ubuntu to Fedora 16 because of this with the latter
running stable. All were pristine installs.

This bug's thread is a "hodge podge" of different scenario's precisely
because it happens IN a multitude of scenario's. Affected users can have
the problem while watching video's, while working with GIMP, while
browsing CPU / GPU intensive websites and so on. If anything, the bugs
title and description should be updated instead of dismissing this.

I can reproduce it 100% within 3 minutes by:
Clean install on my MSI EX600
Either update or don't the nVidia drivers (doesn't make a difference)
Open www.eurogamer.net (quite resource heavy that one)
Open a digital foundry face-off article (just because it's a combination of
flash, of images, video and a whole lot of comments)
Scroll up and down the article.
Crash within a minute!

The crash is instant, no log files get updated afaik.

The crash may be preceded by one or more screen "flashes" - as if the
display is updating. This is milliseconds long, but clearly noticeable.

One of the flashes eventually freezes the complete system, with a hard
reset the only solution.

Happens on nVidia, ATI, Intel etc. But clearly has somethign to do with
the display, the LCD image updating. Quite where - I don't know.

This bug is blocking for those involved. Critical for Canonical. As
mentioned - I am getting used to Fedora now - one of many answers to
this problem.

Please update priority and status. Thanks!

** Summary changed:

- ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by
3.3.6 kernel)

[Bug 996989] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes Frequently

2012-05-27 Thread Joris V.
Can't believe this is on invalid! I got an MSI EX600 machine, which I
have been using Ubuntu on since 9.10 without major hick-ups.

I have _switched_ from Ubuntu to Fedora now, since this bug really makes
the system unworkable. There is nothing written in logs when this
happens, although I know a way to fully reproduce the crash.

Open your webbrowser and point to a resource-intensive website, like
www.eurogamer.net. Click on one of the reviews or digital foundry face-
offs. Now just scroll up and down. You'll notice that from time to time
the browser screen refresh seems to hang just an instant. Continue to
scroll up and down. You would be very lucky if the momentary hang
doesn't result in a full lock-up after a few occurances.

This bug is 100% reproducable. Since you can not work on the system for
more than half an hour, Ubuntu becomes plain unusable, which is a shame.

This happens on a fully clean install. With or without updating Nvidia
drivers.

Don't dismiss this. The bug is here, reproducable, blocking.

[Bug 940355] [NEW] Log out results in a full black screen

2012-02-24 Thread Joris Donders
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 12.04 :

when the power button is pressed, and the log out option is selected it
results in a black screen with no dialog possible.

When moving the cursor arround one can detect it changes somewhere in
the middle of the screen, but nothing can be selected nor when the
password is given to log back in, it just remains fully black and
nothing happens.

A full reboot is then the only option to have a working desktop.

I have made only one user and selected the automatic login at startup.

With working with pausestand (closing the lid of the laptop) and let it
awake, I can select for another user witch prompts me with a login
screen.

Tested with 3 laptops of various trademarks and all having the same
issue.

[Bug 899906] Re: impossible to enter last.fm credentials, hence no scrobbling

2011-12-14 Thread Joris Bierkens
Either I was mistaken, the bug has been fixed, or a restart of rhythmbox
made the difference: a last.fm entry has appeard on the side pane, where
I can enter my credentials.

If a restart was indeed necessary I'd like to remark that this is
counterintuitive / should not be necessary in my opinion.

I can not reproduce the behaviour; as soon as I select last.fm in the
plugins windows, the last.fm entry appears on the side pane. Perhaps I
did not see it before, in case the plugins windows blocked the rhythmbox
window.

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-25 Thread joris
@Daniel

Fixed!

Thanks for your post about checking the Unity version... There is a
newer version of Unity available in the proposed repository, that I had
enabled. So it was not your version of Unity from the ppa that was
installed, but the newer version. Since I don't know how to downgrade, I
did a fresh install of 11.10 and enabled your ppa and now the fix is
working.

Stupid from me not to notice this earlier...

But thank you very much for your time and fast responses.

For your information on my fresh install the gnome display tool still
looks as in the screenshot I posted earlier, but that doesn't matter
because the Dash is on the primary screen.

Hmmm, fix in ppa isn't working for me. I am using an nvidia card (GT218

Would someone care to explain how to "patch it locally" as Kim Nguyễn
writes. I would like to use 11.10, but with the dash on my second left
not primary monitor it is a pain to work with.

"what if you add 'GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text' to /etc/default/grub (run
update-grub to update the actual config) and reboot, does it change
anything?"

This fixes the issue as well on the Lenovo ThinkPad L520 model which has the
1600x900 display
Without it you only get the garbled display.

I uninstalled all the gnome components and even if there were mistakes
