[Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2021-01-17 Thread Leslie Satenstein
Tried to install 2021-01-17... Failure. But I could get into terminal
mode. What to add to complete the installation.

It would be useful to have a patch/script file that I could run in
terminal mode that would perform all the corrections.

[Bug 1898152] Re: upgrade fails to calculate if gnuradio-dev is installed

2020-10-10 Thread Neil Leslie
Having not had any success with removing gnuradio, I tried removing
other things, including the PPAs I had removed before (I was aiming to
make one change at a tie to pin down the issue). It turns out that I had
a non-Ubunutu standard versions of sane and some associated libraries.
When I forced the version to be the one in bionic-update I was able to
update successfully.

Thanks for the assistance. As always when one find the solution one
wonders why one did not do that first :-(

[Bug 1898152] Re: upgrade fails to calculate if gnuradio-dev is installed

2020-10-08 Thread Neil Leslie
Thanks for the suggestion. I did a complete removal of gnuradio-dev
using synaptic package manager, and then tried doing an upgrade.
Unfortunately I got the same result.

I then did a complete removal of gnuradio, and all installed libgnuradio
packages (they were 3.7.11-10, if that is any use). I then tried a tried
doing an upgrade. Unfortunately I got the same result.

I then did sudo apt-get autoremove from the command line. The following
packages were removed:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libcodec2-0.7 libcomedi0 liblog4cpp5v5 libqt5designer5 libqt5help5
libqwt-qt5-6 librtlsdr0 libuhd003.010.003 libvolk1-bin libvolk1-dev libvolk1.3
  python-backports.functools-lru-cache python-certifi python-cheetah
python-cycler python-dateutil python-decorator python-gobject python-matplotlib
python-networkx
  python-olefile python-opengl python-pil python-pyparsing python-pyqt5
python-requests python-scipy python-sip python-subprocess32 python-tz
python-urllib3
  python-yaml python-zmq rtl-sdr uhd-host

I then tried a tried doing an upgrade. Unfortunately I got the same
result.

So, it looks like gnuradio-dev is not the only culprit. Any further
suggestions welcome!

Since pressure is just working, I'm expecting it to be a scaling issue
wrt to the pressure value returned.

This would suggest that you have native wintab32.dll installed.

Running the following in directory wine/dlls/wintab32/tests
WINETEST_INTERACTIVE=1 make test

What is the pressure value that is displayed when pressure is applied?

No, the issue appears to be the pressure range difference between
windows (0-1023 ) and Linux (0-64000).

I've updated the patchset to scale the values to range 0-1023, which
makes gimp happy at least.

I've added Roberts patch to staging patchset, but no longer have access
to a stylus to test it properly.

Can someone please confirm that every works correctly?

[Bug 1795721] [NEW] Newly mounted drive icons jumbled with Desktop icons.

2018-10-02 Thread Leslie Stanford
Public bug reported:

The icons for newly mounted [flash] drives automatically appear directly
on top of existing desktop icons even if the the "Keep aligned" context
menu has previously been selected. It can easily be corrected by
selecting "Organize Desktop by Name" from the context menu, but past
versions of Ubuntu have usually accomplished this automatically upon
flash drive mounting without the need for doing it manually. I will
attach a screenshot where you can see the icons mixed together. It
appears to affect only flash drives and only the first one that is
inserted, as additional drives that are added appear automatically
organized on the Desktop. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the
size of the flash drive or not because my 2GB drive would not appear on
the Desktop (or anywhere else for that matter) at all...

Re: [Bug 1776416] Re: Sound stopped working after update 11/06/18 7pm GMT

2018-08-28 Thread Leslie A Bailey
Well, if the drivers were being updated automatically with a system
update they weren't for me.

The engineer didn't explain exactly what he did, sorry.

The repair wasn't expensive, so maybe you should get an engineer to look
at?

Sound working again thanks to an engineer. Apparently, the sound drivers
need to be updated. Would have hated to use Windows 10 as their updates
are dreadful.

2018-06-17 Thread Leslie A Bailey
A computer is 50% useless without sound. You don't seem to be in hurry
to roll this back to end my misery. This is the second time this has
happened, the first had to be fixed by an engineer. Seriously thinking
of using Windows, or seeing an engineer again because of your update.
The thing I miss about Windows is the ability to 'Go Back' to a previous
session. PC Specialist whom built my high-end machine warned me not to
use Linux...

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1727356 ***

Thank you for taking the time to review this.

Everything worked fine until I upgraded from 17.10 to 18.

I will try this fix  and if it doesn't work  I will attempt to reinstal
17.10 and not upgrade further.

[Bug 1772410] [NEW] cannot load bionic beaver

2018-05-21 Thread Leslie Keenan
Public bug reported:

A) Bionic beaver stops at UID 129, just after the previous style cursor loads.
Only way i can load it is via advanced/recovery/resume
(I have tried all options-nothing works)
Warns me that graphics may need to be altered but I cannot change graphics
settings anyway!
Display lags: 'you tube' impossible to watch.
We also need:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, Ubuntu 18.04
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or
by checking in Software Center: Terminla gives N: Unable to locate package
pkgname

[Bug 1444656] Re: GnuTLS TLS 1.2 handshake failure

2017-03-20 Thread Samuel Leslie
Hi Seth,

I've attached a debdiff which is generated off the latest gnutls26
package: 2.12.23-12ubuntu2.7. That said, no changes to my earlier patch
were required to apply cleanly. Hopefully this is what you're after?

I should also add that this patch should ideally be reviewed by someone
knowledgeable about GnuTLS and C, as I don't consider myself to meet
either of those requirements! Particularly given this is a security
library.

Cheers,
-SDL

[Bug 1444656] Re: GnuTLS TLS 1.2 handshake failure

2017-03-14 Thread Samuel D. Leslie
We encountered this bug today and it has the potential to be pretty
nasty if you're unfortunate enough to hit it. In our case we have
several systems which perform authentication against a Windows domain
using LDAPS. We recently updated the TLS certificate on those systems
and all the services which perform LDAPS authentication starting failing
with the symptoms described earlier in this bug.

The new TLS certificate we installed had the same key size and hash
algorithm, but it turned out the root CA & intermediate certificate were
using SHA384 as the signature hash. This in turn caused the LDAPS
connections to stop working. Given the CA's certificates were using
SHA384 reissuing the certificate wasn't going to help and downgrading
the TLS version was not at all desirable given the potential security
implications.

I've backported the commit referenced by Marc and confirmed it resolves
the problem for us. In my view it'd be wise to push this out to 14.04
users as this issue is going to presumably become more prominent as more
certificates start using stronger hash algorithms and TLS 1.2 becomes
more prevalent.

[Bug 788322]

2016-09-06 Thread Leslie Zhai
quote from Thomas Schmitt

is most probably the known growisofs bug about unformatted BD-R,
which it formats automatically but then forgets to have done.
An inappropriate CLOSE SESSION command is sent in the end and
causes the error message. Diagnosis and fix are here:
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=713016

Workaround:
Add growisofs option -use-the-force-luke=spare=none if the BD-R
medium is detected as blank. Or run dvd+rw-format on the BD-R
before running growisofs.

[Bug 1607755] Re: package doc-base 0.10.7 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 3

2016-07-29 Thread Neil Leslie
The problem seems to be with the ocaml-doc package. I removed this
completely, and the subsequent errors go away. Re-installing ocaml-doc
re-creates the problem.

Summary:
 doc-base
 dwww
 ubuntu-desktop

are now installed.

ocaml-doc is not.

[Bug 1492764] Re: [drm:intel_pipe_config_compare [i915]] *ERROR* mismatch in ips_enabled (expected 1, found 0)

2016-05-02 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Update: I spoke too soon. After another reboot I just get endless i915
crashes and X dialogs telling me I'm in low graphics mode - so only text
mode for me. Various attempts to purge and reinstall Nvidia/Bumblebee
failed, probably because this seems to be an Intel problem.

I'm attempting to upgrade to 16.04 in the hopes that a 4.4 kernel will
work.

[Bug 1492764] Re: [drm:intel_pipe_config_compare [i915]] *ERROR* mismatch in ips_enabled (expected 1, found 0)

2016-05-01 Thread Leslie Viljoen
After upgrading my Asus laptop to Ubuntu 15.10 I got dumped to black
screen with a flashing cursor.

To fix this I had to:
1. run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" to finish installing packages that were
already downloaded
2. run "sudo apt-get install --reinstall resolvconf" - because apt told me
resolvconf was broken
3. run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm" (and pick lightdm again) and then reboot
(to get a graphical desktop back)
4. edit /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf and change KernelDriver, LibraryPath and
XorgModulePath to point to the newer NVidia driver Ubuntu had installed, then
reboot (to get bumblebee's primusrun command working again)

Not the greatest upgrade experience but its all working now.

Of course don't do the above unless you read a little and know what
these do, or have reason to believe that these will solve problems you
actually have. I'm sharing the list of things in case they give you some
hints to solving similar problems.

My specs: Asus X550L laptop, NVidia GeForce 840M graphics.

2016-03-06 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Sorry, this was reported over 7 years ago, I doubt it has any relevance
any more. My old Mac Mini is long since packed away and probably too
slow to be worth using with today's software. Thanks for taking a look
though.

Should I close this bug report or something?

[Bug 1275495] Re: check_radius missing

2016-02-08 Thread Samuel D. Leslie
This should be an easy fix, but as an alternative while a developer gets
around to it, you can also use the Monitoring Plugins PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~pkg-nagios-devel/+archive/ubuntu/plugins. See
also: https://www.monitoring-plugins.org/

Note that this will result in installing a far newer version of the
plugins so you should only do this if you're willing to invest the time
to also fix any potential incompatibilities due to the major version
bump. That said, my own installation on a production Icinga instance
went very smoothly.

Hi Andreas,

Thanks for your patch! I do not have Qt developer's account, so I could not +1
for your great job.
Hope Qt5.x will integrate your patch to fix the restore session relative issue.

About ksmserver session management improvement, as you said make it
robust http://marc.info/?l=kde-core-devel=144832700109449=1 is there
someone else to work together to make ksmserver better, make KDE5 better
;-)

Thanks again for your great job!

[Bug 1342574] Re: Samba crashing on null path in cleanup_tmp_files

2015-01-03 Thread Samuel D. Leslie
Seeing the exact same issue here. I also note that the crash seems to be
from starting smbd with the '-D' parameter by samba-ad-dc, however, it
shouldn't even be trying to run this from what I can see. The system is
running a fresh installation of Samba with a vanilla configuration and
as such is not configured to function as a domain controller. The init.d
script for samba-ad-dc contains this excerpt:

start)
SERVER_ROLE=`samba-tool testparm --parameter-name=server role
 2/dev/null | tail -1`
if [ $SERVER_ROLE != active directory domain controller ];
then
exit 0
fi

However, the upstart script performs no such check and simply attempts
to start it unconditionally. I'm not sure if this is related to the
behaviour we see here (expecting configuration parameters that aren't
present?) or is a separate issue.

[Bug 1292400] Re: task systemd-udevd:1906 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

2014-11-15 Thread Samuel D. Leslie
This bug has been quiet for a while by the looks of it so just chipping
in. I can confirm I witnessed this bug last week on an Ubuntu 14.04 x64
VM on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V server with dynamic memory
enabled on the guest. I suspect that dynamic memory (aka. memory hot-
add/remove) may be related to this issue. If so, creating a VM with
dynamic memory enabled and then running a workload that is memory
intensive to ensure the Hyper-V server allocates more RAM to the VM may
be beneficial. The tie-in with the balloon driver is interesting, and
might suggest there's some level of interaction going on between these
two components? Perhaps after dynamic memory adds more RAM to the system
the balloon driver may trigger the issue due to no longer valid
assumptions, or alternatively, the removal of memory from the system
once it no longer needs it has a similar effect?

It may also be useful for others to know that we initially detected this
issue due to it causing a very high load average on the affected system
which can be trivially detected by monitoring systems like Nagios. Note
that while the load average is high, this doesn't correspond to any
given process actually consuming substantial CPU resources, so you'll
want to take a look at the dmesg output which will confirm if you're
experiencing the issue via the blocked systemd-udevd and kworker
processes.

[Bug 1363519] Re: start-stop-daemon fails debsums check

2014-10-26 Thread Samuel D. Leslie
Just chipping in that I have just encountered this exact bug as reported
by Rafał Roncoszek on an Ubuntu Server 14.04.1 x64 server I admin. Was
initially very concerned to see a critical system binary failing a
debsums check but the md5sum's of the failing binary and the updated
binary via a 'apt-get install dpkg --reinstall' exactly match those
provided in this bug report.

While I agree this isn't a security issue, I do consider it a fairly
severe bug when incorrect/unexpected versions of system binaries are
being installed and in turn causing simple auditing tools to report
issues with the installation. Thanks!

[Bug 1345059] [NEW] linux-cloud-tools missing from precise

2014-07-19 Thread Samuel D. Leslie
Public bug reported:

The Trusty Tahir Hardware Enablement Stack for Ubuntu 12.04 is available
and being aggressively promoted to existing Ubuntu 12.04 deployments
running now End-of-Life Hardware Enablement Stacks. However, the linux-
cloud-tools packages have not been made available to Precise users. This
package was newly introduced in Trusty Tahir and contains cloud
specific tooling associated with a given kernel version, separate from
the general tools provided in the linux-tools packages. Right now, this
package only contains Hyper-V specific daemons and utilities.

The result of this is that on updating to the Trusty HWE the userspace
hv-kvp-daemon Hyper-V daemon previously provided by the linux-tools packages is
no longer present and will fail to start when the hv-kvp-daemon-init package
attempts to do so:
hv_kvp_daemon not available for kernel 3.13.0-30

This is in my view a very serious issue as it risks potentially breaking
Hyper-V deployments of Ubuntu 12.04 which have either updated to the
Trusty HWE or will be installed via the 12.04.05 installation media (the
latter has yet to be released). From my brief look at the packaging
situation the linux-cloud-tools packages depend on a newer version of
sysv-rc than is currently available for 12.04, though, this is the only
unmet dependency and I'm unsure if the newer sysv-rc is technically
required or was just pinned against the release that Ubuntu 14.04
shipped with.

** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

** Package changed: hv-kvp-daemon-init (Ubuntu) = linux-meta (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1343159] [NEW] apt-offline get doesn't work on FreeBSD 10/Python 2.7.6

2014-07-17 Thread Duane Leslie
Public bug reported:

In AptOfflineCoreLib.py there is a call to socket.setdefaulttimeout()
which changes the default timeout from infinite to 30 seconds.
Additionally the user has the option to provide a non-infinite timeout
via a command line switch during 'apt-offline get' commands.

This changes the timeout for all sockets including those used within
httplib (called from urllib2). Unfortunately httplib converts the
socket to a file descriptor using socket.makefile() and the
documentation for that function in Python2.7 states The socket must be
in blocking mode (it can not have a timeout).

The result, at least on FreeBSD10, is that the 'apt-offline get'
function fails whenever the socket is not ready with data immediately.
Changing the timeout value to something very large doesn't appear to
help and I suspect there may be some implementation issue specific to
FreeBSD which causes read/recv on sockets to return before the timeout.

Setting the timeout to infinite ('None') resolves the issue and can be
done directly in the urllib2.urlopen() function by providing an argument
'timeout=None' to enforce the timeout for just that connection.

Regards,

Duane.

[Bug 1269232] Re: NVIDIA Corporation GK208M [GeForce GT 730M] [10de:1290] does not supported

2014-06-20 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I have a similar card ( GK208M [GeForce GT 740M] and a similar problem.
I could not install the proprietary driver automatically. I am running
Ubuntu 14.04 Gnome.

I solved it by installing something called Bumblebee, following these
instructions:
http://www.themukt.com/2014/06/13/howto-install-nvidia-331-bumblebee-optimus-cards-ubuntu

I had to apt-get install virtualgl to run the tests at the end.
Also, the package nvidia-settings-331 seems to have gone away so I didn't
install it.

There's some Ubuntu docs on this here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee

Basically it uses the NVidia card to render things that are displayed by
the Intel card.

[Bug 1320488] [NEW] hv-kvp-daemon-init incompatible with kernel 3.11

2014-05-17 Thread Samuel D. Leslie
Public bug reported:

The /usr/sbin/hv_kvp_daemon script installed by the hv-kvp-daemon-init
package currently fails to find the hv_kvp_daemon binary for the running
kernel when running under a 3.11 release (as per a reasonably up-to-date
Ubuntu 12.04 installation). Ironically, the hv_kvp_daemon script
installed by linux-tools-common package works fine, however, it is
diverted by the package ending up at /usr/sbin/hv_kvp_daemon.hv-kvp-
daemon-init. It is thus never actually called by the hv-kvp-daemon init
script.

The hv-kvp-daemon-init package is still required as it installs various
other support utilities as well as the init script itself used to start
the KVP (Key-Value Pair) daemon. I believe this issue has arisen as the
/usr/sbin/hv_kvp_daemon script was presumably not included until the
linux-tools-common releases associated with the 3.11 series of kernels
and has not been updated to reflect this.

A simple workaround for now is to remove the divert and restore the script
installed by linux-tools-common:
sudo dpkg-divert --remove /usr/sbin/hv_kvp_daemon
sudo mv /usr/sbin/hv_kvp_daemon /usr/sbin/hv_kvp_daemon.bak
sudo mv /usr/sbin/hv_kvp_daemon.hv-kvp-daemon-init /usr/sbin/hv_kvp_daemon
sudo service hv-kvp-daemon-init start
ps -ef | grep kvp # Verify the daemon is actually running

For the unaware, the daemon is non-critical from the guest OS's
perspective, however, it is used by the Hyper-V host to exchange
information with the guest OS instance, such as IP addressing and system
state information. When not running various information usually
accessible to the hypervisor won't be which can impact scripting tasks
as well as in some cases system functions (e.g. some backup types may be
affected where they rely on the daemon to communicate with the host).

@flm The only other issue I've had is with Intel wifi which I mostly
mitigate by disabling N-mode. See my comment at

I've not had the i965 problem probably because my display driver is an

[Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)

2012-10-03 Thread Leslie Viljoen
3.4 is great in terms of freezing but introduced an Intel Wifi problem
for me: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/994104

Still the lesser of two evils though.

[Bug 994104] Re: Wireless performance issues on kernel 3.4.0-1-generic (iwlwifi)

2012-10-02 Thread Leslie Viljoen
This bug makes daily work a real pain - my wifi is constantly going down
and I have to press the hardware kill switch twice to get it back up
again.

As a work-around, based on the upstream report, I have been running a
script to force the adapter into (slower) g-mode:

sudo rmmod iwlwifi
sudo modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

This script sometimes causes a complete kernel crash, so I have not made
it run by default, though it has not caused a crash so far when I run it
manually soon after bootup. Perhaps it causes the crash after the
adapter has gone through one of its failure cycles?

After the adapter is in g mode I do still get wifi disconnects but they
are in the order of less than once a day, so I can at least get some
work done.

[Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)

2012-08-13 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I've tried 3.4 for 7 days and haven't had any lock-up, but that newer
kernel has issues with some Wifi cards, including mine, so I've had to
go back to 3.2.0-90 and live with the rarer lock-ups.

Please read comment #71 and #72.
Adding unrelated noise does not help - rather find or open a new bug report.
This one has a specific test case.

Does anyone still have a freeze within a minute of running the test

2012-07-17 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Paul: run uname -a and see which Kernel you have.

IMPORTANT: there is more than one freezing bug! The one relevant to this
bug is exposed by the script posted above - don't keep commenting here
if you have a different problem!

I will attach the script you need to run. On a kernel with the bug, this
script usually produces a hard lock within a minute.

2012-07-12 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Timo, your -90 kernel has fully solved the lock up caused by the
glxgears script above. I still have hard lock-ups once every two weeks
or so but like you say, the cause of that is probably something else
entirely. Its very hard to determine causes when there's no evidence to
examine afterwards!

[Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)

2012-06-20 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I want to confirm that the kernel in comment #38 solved the almost daily
lock ups for me too (sorry to me too).

The linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic kernel in the precise-proposed software
source did NOT fix it.

For anyone looking for a solution and needing to work right now:
1. The problem is frequent complete system freezes with Ivy Bridge (see the
output of lspci to confirm Ivy Bridge)
2. Download the file in comment #38 and install it (double-click the .deb that
you downloaded to get that option)

[Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)

2012-06-20 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I spoke too soon. Though the script caused a lock in seconds with the
linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic kernel and ran for a good 40 minutes
without a lock up on the linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic kernel, I just had
another lock up now. So there's some further issue.

Same here, worked after I unmounted. Thanks guys! You can use

remember if that's in the default install.

Anyway, it would be nice if Brasero were fixed to handle this more
elegantly.

[Bug 353495] Re: (K)ubuntu fails to install GRUB on Amilo Si 3655 notebook

2010-07-29 Thread Leslie Viljoen
The work-around above fails in Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04) because the grub
command is missing from grub2. See the following thread for an updated
work-around:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9635712#post9635712

After a lot of searching I have been unable to determine whether this is
a bug in grub or a problem with the Amilo BIOS having some kind of
affection for the Windows boot loader. Any insight would be appreciated
- its such a shame to fail at the finish line after everything else on
the laptop works perfectly out of the box.
