[Bug 495352] Re: Couldn't run ubuntu-bug against 'network-manager'
I see. This sadly doesn't help much, because I was really expecting to see an interface with a name with some special character not allowed in the apport code. I was asking at the time because I immediately tested it on a newly-installed system and never got an error. For anyone wondering why this is fix committed and what it means: this bug in Fix Committed stage means it has been fixed upstream and the fix is also available in a Bazaar branch for the network-manager-applet package. It also means that a fix should be made available soon, through an update or through an upload to the current development release. As this bug is marked targetted for karmic-updates, there should be an update published soon that will contain this fix. However, in the meantime, you could test the fix using the network-manager packages from the NetworkManager team PPA: https://edge.launchpad.net/~network- manager/+archive/trunk. Re: [Bug 392195] Re: add support for the http method (MSN over HTTP)

Thanks for the catch Olivier, what you say is totally right, it would make more sense to default to using the HTTP method when a proxy is set. @Kobalt, there should be an updated package in my PPA shortly (waiting to be built). Is there any chance you could test it? [Bug 392195] Re: add support for the http method (MSN over HTTP)
@Kobalt, Not sure, but there are a couple of things we could try. For example, do you normally need to set a proxy in Firefox? If so, you will also need to specify that proxy in Gnome for it to be used in Empathy. Also, please try the following to get logs from telepathy-butterfly to know what is going on: 1- Quit empathy. 2- Wait a few seconds so empathy and the telepathy-butterfly CM can stop. 3- Start telepathy-butterfly: BUTTERFLY_PERSIST=1 BUTTERFLY_DEBUG=all /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-butterfly 21 | tee butterfly.log 4- Restart empathy. Per, Instead of building it from source, you could try the packages from the Network-Manager trunk PPA, here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~network- manager/+archive/trunk You could try to use the NM_VPNC_DUMP_CONNECTION=1 parameter when starting NetworkManager with the updated versions from the PPA, as such: sudo NM_VPNC_DUMP_CONNECTION=1 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon This will give you additional information on the VPN connection. You could attach the information here, but if you do you should first make sure that you look at the resulting output very carefully as it displays a lot of potentially sensitive information. [Bug 443174] Re: Importing an OpenVPN config file does not fill all supported options
Milan, When you import the configuration file, are your certificates also in the same path as the imported file? I'm confirming this bug, as I can currently notice that behaviour in Karmic with the attached configuration file: certificates are missing (which is probably normal since I don't have them), and the port specified in the config as well. The connection port doesn't appear to ever be imported from the config as per even the latest git snapshot available, so I'll mark this as importance: Wishlist, since it requires implementing some new stuff. [Bug 392420] Re: K/X/Ubuntu - Network Manager OpenVPN support NEEDS an overhaul. It should be a simple config file manager.
Hi, I'd have to respectfully disagree with you. NetworkManager as it currently supports OpenVPN seems to do a good job at allowing people who know nothing of VPNs and have had no prior exposure to the specifics of an openvpn configuration file to quickly and easily setup a connection -- I think that's something that clearly shouldn't be overlooked. Then again, I am involved with NM development, so take it for what it's worth ;) OTOH, what you are describing appears to me like it may already be available. My understanding is that what you're suggesting is to be able to deal with configuration files provided by a network administrator, correct? This would already be somewhat available through the import function in later (0.8+) versions of the openvpn plugin. I'm very tempted to mark this an Invalid, as it seems to me like it falls more into some kind of GUI redesign task. It would also probably be more efficiently brought up on the NM mailing list (or bug tracker) if you want to get a broader point of view from developers and users. pablocosta, Thanks for taking the time to file this bug and help make Ubuntu better. This information can be retrieved using the 'apt-cache policy resolvconf' command. - Would you have specific examples for which the current setup fails? I'd be interested to know, since in most cases the fact that DNS information and search string gets prepended should help a lot in ensuring that at least a vast majority of requests are routed only through the VPN (as long as it has the records, and responds in time). Thanks for taking the time to file a bug and help making Ubuntu better. In order to better help you, we would need additional information from you: - Please describe each individual steps you are taking to setup your network, when you are seeing this issue. It will help us understand exactly which part doesn't behave as expected. - If you have settings in /etc/network/interfaces and would like to manage your interfaces through NetworkManager, you should make sure the interface you are trying to use with NM is not configured in /etc/network/interfaces. If that's the case, please make a backup copy of your file (for obvious reasons :), then remove the configuration for that interface, and try again. Does that work? - Have you tried this again with the latest release? If so, what are your results? As far as I know, NetworkManager will not modify /etc/network/interfaces. NM keeps this information elsewhere, but still will retain it across reboots. On the other hand, once connected you should see that /etc/resolv.conf contains your DNS information. ** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- networkmanager does not set network settings https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/369134 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@Per, Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you on this: the log you attached is actually missing something important I wanted to see, I'm assuming I wasn't really clear :) What I'd like to know, is whether you have the same IP address from DHCP for your wireless connection between two instances of nm-applet: the first time you start nm-applet and a successfully vpn connection, and then after you've restarted nm-applet and tried to establish a connection again and it succeeded. No need to attach a new syslog excerpt (so you don't have to re-do trimming and anonymizing and such), but please confirm that it's the same IP address for the wifi connection for both instances of nm-applet. [Bug 475814] Re: vpnc will only connect successfully on first try per session
@Per, does the workaround of killing nm-applet and restarting it work for you? @Per or @pat.pannuto: If you could provide an excerpt of /var/log/syslog for a successful connection, followed by a failed one and killing/restarting nm-applet and re-establishing a VPN connection successfully in one go, if possible, it would be very helpful... My interest is to know what changes between the first and second instance of nm-applet. I'm under the impression that the issue is caused by NAT outside the system, which causes a subsequent connection after a failure, with the same IP, to just hang there and eventually timeout. Whereas when nm- applet is restarted and a wireless (or is anyone using wired and can confirm this bug too?) connection established, the short DHCP lease makes it go through a different IP which will make it work. -- vpnc will only connect successfully on first try per session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 237016] Re: Network Manager vpnc plugin is missing Authmode option
Sebastian, Did you have a chance to try using the NetworkManager from PPA, or from the latest release of Ubuntu (9.10)? As mentioned above, setting Authmode is probably not required. You should instead (on a recent NetworkManager, 0.7 or 0.8) try to set the password, group password, or both to Unused, depending on what is required at your university. Eeqmcsq, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. AFAIK, the DNS resolver would have continued on to the next DNS server, *unless* the first answered with NXDOMAIN, which is likely the case when you try to ask for DNS information on a domain that is available both from the Internet and locally, but most likely not with the same information (because of DNS views) This doesn't look like a bug but just to be sure, please do your above test again -- from what I can see from here, ns1.sbcglobal.net seems to find svl.access-company.com just fine, although it full probably not have your machine as an entry in the zone unless you are connected to the VPN (if there indeed should be your_machine.svl.access-company.com). Hi, could you please specify which version of the network-manager package you are running? You can know this information by issuing the 'apt-cache policy network-manager' command. It would be helpful if you could paste or attach the output of that command here. Also, are you using any special parameters in the settings for your wired connection, under the IPv6 Parameters tab? ** Description changed: Binary package hint: network-manager + + As opposed to #435073, this is when IPv6 is set to 'Automatic' manually, + rather than what happens during/after an upgrade from Jaunty. If IPv6 is enabled in Network Manager and set to Auto the Network Manager icon will say no network connection and applications that check it to find out if there is an Internet connection (Pidgin, Ubuntu One) will refuse to connect even though there is a valid IPv4 connection available. In addition, on boot the system will not obtain an IPv4 address until dhclient is run manually. After manually running dhclient I can browse through Swiftweasle and ping hosts, so I know the connection is good, however Network Manager still says no network connection.
