[Bug 772311] Re: X freezes when maximizing konsole window

2011-05-02 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Same for me here. It doesn't happen on maximize though, it happens any
time the window is resized. For now, I have only found Konsole that
caused the problem.

Since a large part of my work implies logging into multiple servers at
the same time with ssh, this is quite critical for me. Also hardware is
company supplied, and therefore there is nothing I can do about it.

[Bug 621972] Re: plasma-widget-kimpanel does not work in Maverick

2010-10-08 Thread Nicolas Piguet
kimpanel has never really worked well with kubuntu, and maverick is no
different. I have the same problem as reported there. And this sucks
quite a lot since people who have to use IME to type their characters
represent around 30% of the world's population.

Anyway, adding Chinese (simplified) from the System settings panel seems
to install all the correct packages, however they do not seem to be
configured properly to run together.

[Bug 482527] Re: Printingproblem with HP 2575

2010-04-11 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Finally, I got it working for me. I had to install Lucid-Gnome in
VirtualBox, and setup the printer as described in this bug report, then
copy the URI to my real machine. It turned out that those two URI use
different drivers:

hpijs (doesn't work): hp:/usb/Photosmart_2570_series?serial=MY7293132V04DY
hpcups (works):
usb://HP/Photosmart%202570%20series?serial=MY7293132V04DYinterface=1

So it seems that this specific problem is only tied to the hpijs driver,
and that it is easily solved by using the hpcups driver instead

[Bug 482527] Re: Printingproblem with HP 2575

2010-03-28 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Ok so this seems to work for people on gnome, but I have no idea how to
make this work on KDE. I couldn't find the way to change the connection
to USB, as the previous posters mentionned.

Currently, my printer's URI looks like this:

hp:/usb/Photosmart_2570_series?serial=MY7293132V04DY

Can any of the people who got it working post the full working URI of
their printer?

Otherwise, which configuration file is this URI stored into?

which are not developers, progress is ongoing and can be tracked here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MainInclusionReportPlasmaWidgetKimpanel

Just a quick question, does the fact that the MIR report changed to

Anyway, thank you very much for giving this package this much attention,
now my wife will be able to go back to using kubuntu :-)

[Bug 377853] Re: [needs-packaging] kimpanel

2009-08-16 Thread Nicolas Piguet
I'd like to add, if this helps, that there is already a few packages
available from different source:

OpenSUSE:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/swyear:/kimpanel/openSUSE_Factory/
Arch Linux: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=24652

Are those of any help to create an official package for Karmic?

[Bug 407447] [NEW] ndiswrapper, Karmic amd64: Unable to handle NULL pointer dereference at (NULL)

2009-07-31 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Public bug reported:

I was trying to load the ndiswrapper kernel module after installing the drivers
for my wireless card (wg311v3, driver found from this page:
http://sites.google.com/site/subtlegems/netgear-wg311v3-ndis-driver-for-linux-amd64).
The wireless driver appeared to install properly, but when running modprobe
ndiswrapper, nothing happens and no wireless interface is added.
dmesg includes the following error message: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL
pointer dereference at (null). syslog doesn't contain any relevant messages.

I'm using Karmic Koala alpha 3 (with the packages on the CD), and
installed ndiswrapper by downloading ndiswrapper-common and ndiswrapper-
utils-1.9 from packages.ubuntu.com.

the packages I have installed are:
ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all
ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_amd64

ndiswrapper -v for some reason returns version 1.55

[Bug 339882] Re: Can't add PPPoE account at Network Manager in Kubuntu 9.04 Alpha 5

2009-07-28 Thread Nicolas Piguet
I can confirm that this problem remains in the release version of
Kubuntu 9.04 with only the regular packages installed. The DSL and
Mobile-broadband tabs are greyed out in the network management
plasmoid.

I tried installing the backports to get KDE 4.3, but the problem remains
(and it's still as annoying).

As a workaround, PPPOE connections can still be established using
pppoeconf and pon/poff/plog, but it's a pain in the ass to do this using
the command line every time I plug in my laptop to my pppoe connection.

[Bug 377853] Re: [needs-packaging] kimpanel: a universal IM panel for KDE4

2009-07-02 Thread Nicolas Piguet
I agree that this should be packaged. Chinese/Japanese/Korean input has
always been a clusterfuck in Kubuntu, and it has become worse since KDE
4 was adopted. Kimpanel is finally an IME which is perfectly integrated
in the desktop environment. Its a proper plasmoid that can exist either
inside a panel or outside, and will work nicely with all applications.

It would be extremely useful for users in these countries if this was
packaged in Karmic. And by the way, we are talking about a target
demographics that encompasses roughly 1/3 of the world, so that's hardly
a niche.

[Bug 222164] Re: evtouch works incorrectly when the screen is left or right rotated

2008-11-02 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Actually, I would need it to work on 8.10 32 bits. I have a Fujitsu
U810, and intrepid has apparently fixed a lot of things that were broken
in 8.04, including touchscreen support and XRandR compatibility with
Compiz. Unfortunately, Rotation still cannot really be used because it
is only useful in tablet mode, where the only input method is the
touchscreen, and this touchscreen bug screws it up.

Is there a tutorial somewhere that explains how to build your own
package for ubuntu? I guess I'll just use my own package until this fix
is released for 8.10

[Bug 222164] Re: evtouch works incorrectly when the screen is left or right rotated

2008-11-02 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Thanks, I was able to build the package myself and confirm that it
works. I read the whole Packaging guide and your short tutorial to learn
how to do it with debuild and quilt.

I have noticed another problem though. My touch panel is slightly wider
than my display panel, while being exactly the same height. this means
that the calibration of the X axis reports the leftmost and rightmost
areas of the touch panel as negative pixel positions because my stylus
touches the touch panel, but is not actually over the LCD screen. This
works great in normal mode.

When I turn the screen to the left/right with XRandR the calibration of
the X axis is applied to the Y axis and vice-versa, which means that I
can never really reach the edges of my screen in one direction, and
reach it too quickly in the other. I'll have a look at that evtouch.c to
see how I can fix that additional problem.

Unless somebody else has another way to solve the problem, of course.

2008-10-31 Thread Nicolas Piguet
I can confirm that this happens to me too. When I change the screen
orientation to left or right with xrandr, it seems like the pointer
position is calculated using the wrong coordinates on the wrong axis.

Will it be possible to have a fix for this in 8.10?

gborzi, could you post a link to the post where you have the patch for
the evtouch driver? The thread you linked to is 100 pages long, and I
have no idea where to start looking...

[Bug 252482] Re: Please backport Alsa 1.0.17 to fix Intel HDA problems

2008-08-18 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Hello,

I can confirm that installing Alsa 1.0.17 on my Hardy install using the
script that can be found in the link above fixed all my sound problems.
I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Xi2428 laptop.

Additionally, I have tried installing Intepid alpha 4 (which I believe
comes with alsa 1.0.17) on an Fujitsu u810, and the sound works. Using
Hardy (alsa 1.0.16), the problem is that when I plus in my headphones,
the speaker does not mute. That problem is solved with intrepid. I still
need to try to install Alsa 1.0.17 on hardy on that laptop. I'll let you
know about the result.

I personally think this solves so many problems with hda_intel, which I
believe is on pretty much all centrino platforms (and that's a sizable
chunk of the laptop market), that it really needs to be included into
the current LTS release. That's unless you plan on keeping people stuck
with a broken sound for the next year and a half.

[Bug 227033] Re: Netgear WG311v3 causes ndiswrapper socket deadlock

2008-07-09 Thread Nicolas Piguet
So I tried following the WirelessTroubleShootingGuide that was provided,
but it turns out that many of the commands will not run properly because
when this bug occurs, sudo doesn't work anymore. Sudo probably opens
some kind of socket to work its magic, and that makes it freeze when
this bug appears. Also all commands that try to diagnose the problem by
opening a connection to somewhere (and that includes DNS) lock up
without providing any information and have to be forcefully killed.

And I can confirm that this bug really tends to happen when you do a lot
of simultaneous opening/closing of connections (for example, when you
download a torrent). I managed not to have any problems for more than a
week by nothing more than browsing the web, but as soon as I started
using Bittorrent this bug occured twice within a few hours.

Note that on the contrary to what didix says, modprobe -r ndiswrapper
followed by modprobe ndiswrapper doesn't work and locks up too.

As to the questions asked in one of the top posts, the answers would be:

* Is this reproducible?
Yes, but not completely at will, trying to saturate the connection with a lot
connection creation/destruction will make the bug appear much faster

* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
The best way I've found is to start any bittorrent on a popular torrent and
wait a few ours. When the speed drops to zero, you can verify that all the
applications that use a socket do not work anymore.

* Is this a laptop or a desktop?
I'm using a desktop.

* Does this happen on a clean boot? (booting from scratch, not using
resume/suspend)
It happens from a clean boot.

[Bug 227033] Re: Netgear WG311v3 causes ndiswrapper socket deadlock

2008-07-01 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Hello, I have exactly the same problem with exactly the same wireless
card. It seems to happen randomly, but is triggered much faster if I use
my connection heavily. For example, If I'm downloading a torrent it will
deadlock in a few hours, but if the only thing I do is browse the
internet it may take days before the deadlock happens.

I use Ubuntu Hardy AMD64 (with the proper 64 bit drivers for the
WG311v3).

 ndiswrapper -v
utils version: '1.9', utils version needed by module: '1.9'
module details:
filename:
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/ubuntu/misc/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper.ko
version:1.52
vermagic: 2.6.24-19-generic SMP mod_unload

 uname -a
Linux lotp-lanbox 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:15:37 UTC 2008 x86_64

I use only packages from the official Ubuntu repos (backports disabled)

I'll try to run the wireless troubleshooting stuff when it breaks again

[Bug 194866] Re: [Ubuntu 8.04alpha5] Notebook: headphones and speakers not muteable seperately

2008-05-06 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Now I found something interesting about this bug. The bug seems to be
purely an ubuntu introduced bug, because it i fixed with the current
alsa. This bug was actually fixed in alsa around the 7th of March (bug
report along with the patch is here: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org
/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3800 ). I have looked in the ubuntu packaged ALSA
sources, and diffed them against a recent mercurial snapshot of alsa-
driver (2008-05-02), and it seems that the patch has been incorported
into the ubuntu packaged alsa sources already.

However the fix doesn't work for the ubuntu packaged alsa driver. It
works great on my alsa snapshot though. So this bug has probably been
introduced by ubuntu at some point, or there is something missing in the
ubuntu that makes the upstream fix inefficient.

The fix as described in alsa bug report was to add a new model for the ALC883
codec. The new model name is pi2515. Adding the line
options snd-hda-intel model=fujitsu-pi2515
at the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base is supposed to fix the problem. It does
fix the problem when alsa is manually compiled and installed, but doesn't fix
it with the ubuntu packaged alsa driver.

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts

2008-04-08 Thread Nicolas Piguet
I can confirm the behavior reported by Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen.
Additionally, I can also confirm that the Windows key is treated as a
normal key when setting up the shortcuts through the keyboard shortcuts
application. Every time I try to set up a shortcut that uses the WinKey,
it is set as Super L, which I think means Left Super and not
SuperL. ccsm captures the shortcuts properly. I managed to setup the
shortcut to my desktop to SuperD with gconf-editor, and it works
properly, so this sems to be a bug that is purely into the keyboard
shortcuts application.

I'm also using Hardy, and I think this is definitely worth fixing before
the final release.

[Bug 159358] Re: Lifebook U810 hotkeys tablet

2007-12-25 Thread Nicolas Piguet
I just found something interesting when playing with my u810. When I
press the scroll keys (the 2 arrows right next to the pointing stick),
it logs the following messages in dmesg:

[ 1698.524000] keyboard.c: can't emulate rawmode for keycode 240
[ 1698.644000] keyboard.c: can't emulate rawmode for keycode 240
[ 1699.848000] keyboard.c: can't emulate rawmode for keycode 241
[ 1699.956000] keyboard.c: can't emulate rawmode for keycode 241

I don't really know what to do with that, but at least this confirms
that ubuntu receives the events somewhere. I hope somebody more
experienced will know what this means and how this info can be
exploited.

[Bug 129801] Re: kde-window-decorator crashes in gutsy

2007-11-06 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Will this bug also be fixed for 0.6.0, so that we KDE users have a
chance of using compiz as our main window manager on Gutsy?

If not, would it be possible to get a backport of compiz 0.6.2?

[Bug 116159] [apport] scim-launcher crashed with SIGSEGV in QTextCodec::fromUnicode()

2007-05-22 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

I don't really know what happened. I was just trying to install chinese
input as described on the wiki
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM/Kubuntu?action=show). I would
say this bug is a major annoyance, it makes me unable to use Kubuntu and
I have to fallback on Ubuntu because I need to be able to use chinese
input in a non-chinese locale.

[Bug 88179] Re: [apport] scim-launcher crashed with SIGSEGV in QTextCodec::fromUnicode()

2007-05-22 Thread Nicolas Piguet
This basically happened to me while I was following the wiki guide to
install chinese on Kubuntu
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM/Kubuntu?action=show) on an
en_US.UTF-8 locale. Whatever I do, I've never been able to get chinese
input working under Kubuntu/Kde, it works fine under Ubuntu/Gnome
though...

[Bug 88179] Re: [apport] scim-launcher crashed with SIGSEGV in QTextCodec::fromUnicode()

2007-05-22 Thread Nicolas Piguet
Oh, and given the number of reports of this bug, and how crippling it
really is for people that need CJK input, may I suggest to raise the
priority of this bug a notch?

[Bug 114503] Re: [feisty] language-support-* packages install firefox/thunderbird on kubuntu

2007-05-22 Thread Nicolas Piguet
I can confirm that problem, although I tried to install
language_support_zh.

And I can also confirm that it's very annoying, especially when you are
on a dead slow internet connection in china, and that downloading all
the firefox and thunderbird packages take several hours.
