[Bug 856366] [NEW] Apparent regression in current version: Synaptics trackpad on HP -- right click, click and drag not working

2011-09-22 Thread Paul Kerrigan
Public bug reported:

HP DM1 3101EA
Ubuntu Oneiric beta 1, all updates as of 21 Sept.

By default (and with changes in the system settings/mouse and touchpad option):
Trackpad multi-touch (two finger scroll, for example) works
Trackpad tap to click works

Right click - does not work at all
Click and drag only works within the space of the 'left button' area of the
trackpad - doesn't work overall.

Problem is resolved by installing the deb (dpkg - i ) at
http://www.mdl4.com/2011/07/fix-your-hp-mini-mouse-in-ubuntu-11-04/
and restarting the X server (ctrl-alt-backspace)

Subsequent updates will install the 'broken' xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics (not sure if it's that package or a config file that's broken)
release unless pinned.

I'm not technical enough to actually figure the difference, but it
transforms the PC from virtually unusable to perfectly normal.

If the regression 'fault' in the detection/config of the synaptics
trackpad could be incorporated into the next update to the the package,
that would be great.

I'm more than happy to try any fix and / or to provide whatever
additional information might assist.

** Affects: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 665317] [NEW] Cannot add Facebook (ubuntu Maverick -10.10)

2010-10-22 Thread Paul Kerrigan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

Priority: Low - it's only Facebook, not anything critical.

Gwibber 2.32.0.2
Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10
gwibber:
  Installed: 2.32.0.2-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.32.0.2-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.32.0.2-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-proposed/main i386
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.32.0.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages

Went to add Facebook account
authorised successfully with Facebook.
Facebook account did NOT appear in the left hand column in the 'add' window

Facebook does not appear to link into Gwibber from there.

Note: System was a straight upgrade from 10.04, and Gwibber had worked fine on
that.
Tried the advice from one forum to remove the desktop couch cache via
DANGER do not run this command unless you know what you're doing - it deletes
files recursively.
rm -Rf ~/.cache/desktop-couch ~/.config/desktop-couch
~/.local/desktop-couch
this didn't appear to have any effect on the gwibber application's performance.

[Bug 564459] Re: USB devices not detected when hotplugged

2010-04-30 Thread Paul Kerrigan
Problem also occurs with Huawei USB 3G dongle (e169, reported by lsusb
as E620)

Worked normally in Jaunty, Karmic and beta 2 of Lucid Lynx (upgraded
from Karmic) until some point after lucid lynx beta 3, can't pinpoint
exact date of break.

Workaround is to boot with dongle in place.

Small variation from overall bug:
1. other USB devices (storage, mouse) work when hotplugged
2. Huawei's 'pseudo CD-Rom' aspect of the dongle works too when hotplugged -
it's only the modem part that requires presence at startup.

If I can test anything that might fix or assist in troubleshooting,
would be happy to do so.

all the best

[Bug 544620] Re: Likewise-Open won't start (lwsmd - fail)

2010-03-24 Thread Paul Kerrigan
James - just for info:
I followed the steps for bug 543963 (uninstall the likewise-open packages,
purge them and reinstall the updated ones).
This had no visible improvement until I rebooted - at which point, i got a
different error.
On investigation, package likewise-open5-netlogon was not installed.
I installed that and rebooted - problem solved.

Not sure if that will help or not, but this specific bug that I
submitted is 'resolved' from my perspective; it would be nice if the
likewise-open5-netlogon package was addd as a dependency to ensure it
didn't reoccur, but that's a decision for somebody more qualified !

[Bug 544620] Re: Likewise-Open won't start (lwsmd - fail)

2010-03-22 Thread Paul Kerrigan
Update:
Restarted Lucid, got a different error, indicating that Netlogond couldn't be
started.
Checked, and there was a likewise-open package for netlogon that hadn't been
installed.

Installed that, and domainjoin-gui now works.

Problem solved from my perspective, even if I'm not entirely sure
how/why !

Thanks... apologies if this wasted anybody's time.

Please feel free to close the report.

[Bug 544620] [NEW] Likewise-Open won't start (lwsmd - fail)

2010-03-22 Thread Paul Kerrigan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: likewise-open

All testing undertaken on virtual machines on current release of Sun
VirtualBox OSE

Lucid Beta (installed as alpha 3, will all upgrades done as of 22/03
Linux lucid 2.6.32-16-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 9 16:33:52 UTC 2010 i686
GNU/Linux

likewise-open:
  Installed: 5.4.0.42111-1
  Candidate: 5.4.0.42111-1
  Version table:
 *** 5.4.0.42111-1 0
500 http://ie.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

- expected it to install and start, but the GUI (domainjoin-gui) would not
launch.
- tried from command prompt (including purge of the DEB per another bug report)
- still no success;
"Setting up likewise-open (5.4.0.42111-1) ...
 * Starting Likewise Service Manager: lwsmd [fail]
regshell (error = 40700 - LWREG_ERROR_NO_SUCH_KEY_OR_VALUE)
No such key or value
dpkg: error processing likewise-open (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 252
Errors were encountered while processing:
 likewise-open
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"

starting manually from /etc/init.d naturally didn't work either.

NB:
Problem replicated (same effect) by upgrading an already-domain-joined Karmic
instance

Problem is not critical for me, but I would imagine that it would be for
many

If there's anything I can do to test, let me know - but please bear in
mind I'm not especially technical.

Not sure if it's related, but Lucid currently complains that the 'NX'
facility is not enabled in bios. (it is, and VirtualBox is configured to
support it for this virtual machine...)

Agreed. however, rolling back to the Jaunty version of Amavis-Stats
provides an interim solution for me.
