[Bug 988084] [NEW] Precise: Static IP Results in Empty /etc/resolv.conf
Public bug reported: I have seen reports of this during upgrades from 11.10 to 12.04, but I am seeing this with a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04. Steps to reproduce: 1) Install a new 12.04 server installation 2) Edit /etc/network/interfaces and set: iface eth0 inet dhcp to static, and enter address, netmask, gateway, network, broadcast 3) Reboot 4) cat /etc/resolve.conf results in an empty file, aside from the warning about the file being auto-generated There are only two workarounds for this that I've found: 1) Edit /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head and add the desired settings to the bottom of the file. - OR - 2) Disable the resolvconf daemon from startup and setup /etc/resolv.conf as usual. [Bug 463279] Re: Samba Active Directory Integration for 9.04 Not Working
About the "add machine script" part. The documentation didn't mention anything about that. I joined the domain with the Gnome GUI version of likewise-open5 and made that link like the docs said, and that was it. Even doing everything manually, I don't have an "add machine script" or anything and Samba is working fine in our domain now. I was IRC talking with someone about this and the "add machine script" was mentioned by him mistakenly, as he thought this server was a controller or something, but it's not. It's supposed to be a domain "member", not a controller. So the only thing Samba should care about in this instance is that the user authenticates properly for the shares. [Bug 275866] Re: FailsafeX in Intrepid Should Have an Option to Open a Terminal
Well, I figured out what the problem was, but I still think there should be a way to open a terminal. The problem was the amount of video memory I was giving the VirtualBox virtual machine. I have a 30" monitor and if I want to use fullscreen or seamless mode, I need to allocate at least 17 MB of video memory. I usually set it to 20 MB just to be safe. Hardy didn't have this problem, but Intrepid does. It simply cannot handle a video memory setting that is not 8, 16, or a multiple of 16. [Bug 275866] [NEW] FailsafeX in Intrepid Should Have an Option to Open a Terminal
Public bug reported: I recently had some trouble getting the VirtualBox video driver to work with Intrepid Alpha 6, which gave me a chance to play with the new dialog that appears when Ubuntu starts in low graphics mode. One of my favorite options is the "Edit configuration", which opens the /etc/X11/xorg.conf in Gedit. However, I needed to drop to a terminal window to re-install the guest additions, which was problematic because pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 only gives you a few seconds to work before Gnome tries to restart and sends you back to the FailsafeX dialog. The only way to get to a terminal (that I knew of) was to clear out the xorg.conf file and Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, which loads the desktop (very slowly) and allows me to open a Terminal window. If the FailsafeX dialog gave me the option the open a Terminal, that would be a huge help. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- FailsafeX in Intrepid Should Have an Option to Open a Terminal https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275866 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This sounds like trying to change the word "manager" to something else because someone says having "man" in there makes it sexistguess we better start changing our man pages to something else, like doc pages...but then doctors would get offended and we'd have to change it again. :) All joking aside, from what I've learned, the word was coined as an English term, meaning it should have an English context (which in this case would mean gender-neutral). Since we are using English as the primary language in the Ubuntu community, it seems silly to start changing terms because they don't end in the right letter in some other language. If we change this word for the Spanish-speaking people, then we'd have to change it to something else for the Russian-speaking people, and around and around we go. -- "Ubuntero" inappropriate for female contributors https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/272826 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I don't think this bug is invalid. I just tried to change the host name of this virtual machine. So the first thing I did was look for Network in the System > Administration. That lead me to almost create a new bug report because it is a regression that you cannot "administer" the network settings using the Administration menu. You are forced to use an applet in the panel? I can understand the panel applet being a shortcut, but completely removing the Network menu item completely is confusing. As for the changing of the host name and domain name, this is a MUST for anyone expected to administer any number of computers on a network. [Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login
I agree that it should just work without ever needing to know how, but because of examples like those already given by myself and ma2414ma, not all applications are using gvfs (and some, like VLC don't play nice with it) yet, and it could be quite some time (or never) before they do. Providing a visible location for the mount points provides a workaround for the problems that currently exists. [Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login
ma2414ma said it better than I probably could. I even have problems opening files in gedit for editing using gvfs via FTP. It tries to load them, then just stops and leaves you with a blank window. Another directory in the home directory may not be the best way to do it, but neither is a hidden folder in the home directory. I think ma2414ma's suggestion about having a symlink to .gvfs by default would work pretty well. It would certainly make it easier to find, as well as make it possible for someone like jmcantrell to remove the symlink in case you want to hide the directory. Also, it sounds like something that could be easily implemented by the devs. jmcantrell: I don't think it is obvious at all why it should be hidden. [Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login
VLC is a widely used application and even though this may be their problem, don't count on them to fix it because they still haven't fixed a simple gui bug reported 5 years ago. But I'm not singling out VLC here, there are other applications I have come across that have the same behavior when it comes to gnomevfs/gvfs. The Gnome dialog simply won't let you select the shares. You have to manually navigate to their mount points. This in itself is frustrating enough, but having to right-click, show hidden files, and find .gvfs in my home folder (which I personally don't have for some reason) every single time you want to open a file with a non-gnome application is just plain stupid. [Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login
Try opening a file located on a gvfs mount using VLC or some other non- gnome application, and you'll see why. Even though the applications may use the Gnome file dialog, the dialog itself sometimes hides connected shares, depending on the application. VLC is one example of such an application. They only way to access media on a remote share is to connect to the share using the mount command. Another use case for visible, and easy to find mount points: What if I need to access an something on a remote share via a command line application? The only way to get to those shares from the terminal is to find the mount points. Also, I noticed something interesting...I don't even have a ~/.gvfs folder, even though I have gvfs-fuse installed and shares connected. ma2412ma: Though it would be nice to have a /Volumes at the root of the filesystem, gvfs-fuse is a userspace file system, meaning that once you log out, those shares are disconnected. There would also be permissions issues, which is why it's best to have it in the user's home directory. -- gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212789 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login
In Hardy Beta, you had to manually install it. I was not aware they had included it by default in the official release, but I am very glad they did. The only other real complaint (besides stability) that I have with it is the location of the shares. I really think they should be somewhere more visible, contained in a folder with a more meaningful name (e.g. ~/Volumes). Like everyone else, I am also experiencing this bug. However, I actually have all my important stuff mounted using the /etc/fstab file. People tell me it's archaic to mount SMB shares using fstab, but it's the only reliable way to mount shares. I know they are thinking about phasing out the fstab file, but they really need to get gvfs reliable and matured before they do. Thus far, aside from bugs like these, they have done surprisingly well with its integration. -- gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212789 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login
ma2412ma: "Suppose gvfs is working, wouldn't it be a good idea to make this more obvious to the users and not hide it somewhere as a hidden folder?" I have asked the same question in multiple places without answer. To further the question, why isn't gvfs-fuse installed by default? When a user mounts a share, they expect it to be accessible by ALL their applications, not just the core Gnome ones. I know that gvfs is a userspace filesystem, so why not mount it somewhere obvious in the user's home folder. Something like this maybe: "/home/user/Volumes". How is a new user supposed to know to install gvfs-fuse, then look in a hidden folder by the name of .gvfs? -- gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212789 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Obviously, my alias to 127.0.0.1 got knocked out. So I booted into recovery mode and fixed my "/etc/hosts" file to include the correct alias. I rebooted back into KDE to find KNetworkManager saying "No Network Device Found". Going into the Network configuration, my device is listed and enabled, yet, I have no access to the internet. I switched my networking back to DHCP, which returned a private address (169.*.*.*). Switching back to the manual configuration, I am able to access the internet, but I am now getting the same error from sudo. I cannot do any updates because Adept refuses to run and I obviously can't run "apt-get install update" without sudo, so right now I have a brand new HOSED system. Re: [Bug 147943] Re: [MASTER] broken initial stacking
I know what you mean about video card being obscured. Not many people run a X850 either. As far as bug reports go, I usually look to see if someone else posted something about, and if not, creating a new bug report. Alot of times it ends up as a duplicate of another bug with a subject line that has nothing to do with the bug itself, similar to this bug. My bug report had the title of something like, "Panels do not show on desktop after logging in, running Compiz". Then when it became a duplicate of this bug which could be nominated for "worst subject line for a bug report". But what I'm trying to say, is yes, you should file a bug report (as long as it's not obviously a duplicate of another existing bug). My experience with my card was strange to say the least. A fresh install of Gusty + XGL had Compiz running. Then when I realized video played very choppy, I installed the restricted drivers, which would not run Compiz. So I uninstalled again. Rebooted, and reinstalled the restricted drivers, and everything magically started working. I didn't file a bug report because I figured I did something wrong. So maybe try that and see if ity helps. [Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
Yes, I am running Gusty Beta with all updates as well. I'm not sure it was the command Chris gave me that did it. Because I remember that after running it, I was able to run Screensaver. The first time it crashed X, I was watching a video in VLC and ever since, opening Screensaver crashes X. So I'm wondering if it has to do with the new fglrx drivers. -- Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
Chris, I don't know if your fix got uploaded, but I tried it for the first time today, and I still have the problem. I started a video in VLC and let it run until the screen blanked, which was 20 minutes. My power settings are set to put the display to sleep after 20 minutes, I was going to do more testing, but X crashes whenever I open the Screensaver window, so I cannot adjust the monitor sleep time less than the screensaver time. I set the display sleep time to 11 minutes and it still went to sleep only after 20 minutes. So it appears as if the fix doesn't really change anything. I don't know if the fix is the reason X crashes when opening the Screensaver window, but is there a command to undo the xset command you mentioned to see if it is the cause of the X crashing problem? [Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
To be honest, I'm not sure how it works. While testing Gusty, I've done several format and reinstalls and to get Compiz to work, I had to install XGL and run an XGL session once I got the proprietary ATI drivers installed. This last time, I simply installed the drivers, rebooted, installed the Fusion components, then went to the Effects window and enabled Normal desktop effects. After that, I installed the compizconfig-settings-manager and set it up the way I wanted. It just worked. I didn't have to switch my session to XGL or anything, it just started working when I enabled Normal effects from the Desktop Effects window (which is now integrated into the Appearance window). Of course, enabling it caused an error saying something about not finding the nvidia drivers, but it worked anyways. So I've been using Compiz Fusion for at least 2 months now and it hasn't crashed once. -- Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
