Getting closer, something seems to be going wrong translating an i18n'ed

Can one of the reporters try the following patch? It should catch the

[Bug 82277] Re: [Feisty] guidance-power-manager doesn't work for UPS on a desktop system

2007-03-23 Thread sebas
I've recently done a bit of work on that, with a very recent version,
you can set IS_LAPTOP=True at the top of powermanage.py. This is a
workaround to allow powermanager to run, even if HAL reports that the
machine is not a laptop (in which case it exits by default).

The reason why I did that was to allow to control CPU frequency via the
applet, and hibernate / suspend after a while.

I do agree with you that this functionality is useful also for non-
laptop machines. I'm not sure, however, if extending the scope of
powermanager does any good to its primary use cases.

Care to check if the hack I introduced comes close to the thing you
want?

I'm also asking myself if we shouldn't use the hwdata package (which
brings the MonitorsDB file with it). Guidance ships the same file (but
I'm unsure if not the hwdata version is used anyway.)

In any case, it probably makes more sense to file this bug against the
hwdata package. The guidance team only updates the file shipped from
time to time, and the 214T doesn't seem to be in there.

No, I think your patch was wrong. :>

Your patch removes that check for groupid (which isn't in there in the first
place), so I couldn't apply it (and thought someone else had fixed it in the
meantime).

If you can confirm that your patch has to be applied with -R, I'd be happy to

userconfig is the first application, passwd is the second -- those are two
different ways to do the same namely changing a user's password.

It's not _for_me_ not supported, it's what the application supports.

How should I not enable using passwd while userconfig is running?

Anyway, I've submitted a fix which should work for your usecase, but changing
other stuff (such as which groups you're in) while userconfig is running,
will still reset to the situation when userconfig was started. You have to
restart userconfig to pick up changes made in the meantime. We do not
guarantee anything else.

[Bug 78374] Re: password variable not cleared well, can results in password overwritten

2007-01-08 Thread sebas
In general, we *will* overwrite whatever you change in the meantime when
running userconfig. The data is read on startup of userconfig,
intermittent changes will be disregarded (not only changing the
password).

Please accept that your usecase is just not supported. And you are
_definitely_ using two applications for the same purpose, namely
userconfig and passwd. Reopening the bug also will not suddenly make
your usecase more valid. I've now added a call to clear the password
field, so it shouldn't be saved twice. Please note, that your usecase is
still _not_supported_.

If the password would be set to empty, however, that would be a valid
bug (it works fine for me).

We cannot 'read' the password at any time, it's not saved in plain text (or
decryptable anywhere, and that would be a security issue anyway).

The thing is that it's just *not* supported to use two applications for
dealing with the same (in this context userconfig and passwd) simultaneously.
Just don't do that.

I cannot reproduce this problem here. Changing the password, and then
trying to use this in a new shell does work here. (Note that you have to
open the shell you try in after you close userconfig, otherwise PAM's

The password cannot be read anyway. And frankly, I think the steps you
describe is shooting yourself in the foot. You are deliberately creating
a race condition.

If we want to support all such cases where we want guidance to still
work even when a user simultaneously uses different tools for the same
job, and expects it to work -- that would be impossible.

We should reset the idle time after resume, that's probably why it does that
thing:

- It resumes
- idle time is high because during suspend it had not been reset
- It sees we're not on battery, checks if idle time is higher than set in the
  UI and happily suspends again

Can you apply the attached patch and show me the output? First thing it does
is printing the resolutions that have been detected by displayconfig, second
thing is choosing the highest resolution available in the case of this
problem (it might still not work if no resolution has been found, but
provides a sensible path in some cases).

The patch can be applied with
cd /usr/share/apps/guidance
patch -p0 < /path/to/debug-resolution-index.diff

This one is I think equivalent, but we cannot read it as normal user. I'm
afraid
that means that we cannot display the current CPU frequency.

I've added a check now, so it doesn't crash. As soon as it's fixed upstream
(i.e. the necessary interface for cpufreq is added), powermanager will display
current frequency.

I'm attaching a patch which you can use in the meantime.

Thanks for the report!

Doesn't look like it's powermanager-related, but that acpid wants to suspend
your machine. Maybe it's configured in

/etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh

?

[Bug 70454] Re: Not an option to hide or disable the "Hibernate computer" button in the logout screen of KDE

2006-11-05 Thread sebas
S3 might be OK for LiveCDs, but I think HAL should disable hibernate on
the LiveCD. It does not make sense for individual applications to decide
whether hibernate is available, this really needs to be done in HAL,
also for consistency reasons.

That also holds true for the buggy hibernate case.

The "multi users" case might be solved via permission (i.e. you have to
be in a certain group to be able to suspend / hibernate, dunno if that's
already the case). Again, this needs to be solved on the HAL level.

[Bug 64650] Re: no way to disable locking of screen after resume

2006-10-29 Thread sebas
Attached is a patch that adds a checkbox so you can choose if you want
to lock the screen.

As to the 'suspend on idle', if someone found me a way to detect
'idleness', I'm happy to implement it. I've had a brief look in
kscreensaver, and it seems you have to dive deep into X internals to
find out how long the machine had been idle. :/
