[Bug 748516] Re: Eclipse window not identified correctly in Unity Launcher-bar

2011-12-14 Thread Victor Costan
@Ti: you're facing a different bug, which does appear to be more
serious.

This bug documents the fact that Unity sometimes identifies the wrong
binary for Eclipse, on systems that have two versions of Eclipse (most
likely the download from the Eclipse site and the Ubuntu package).
Please consider filing a new bug.

[Bug 868508] [NEW] Cannot set up multi-monitor display using fglrx

2011-10-05 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

I have 3 monitors, and I've been trying to set them up side-by-side
using the Displays tool. They're all mirrored by default.

After dragging around the rectangles and clicking Apply, I get this
error: required virtual size does not fit available size:
requested=(6400, 1440), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(2560, 2560) I'm
wondering if it's a driver limitation, or a small glitch that can be
fixed.

I tried setting up my multi-monitor environment using the ATI/AMD
craptastic tool, but it crashes on Oneiric (used to work on Natty). In
fact, on Natty, I used the AMD tool (amdcccle) to set up a rough
approximation of what I wanted, and then I used Displays to arrange the
screens nicely, because the UI has snap-to-edge and snap-to-center. The
fact that this worked makes me hope it'd be possible to have Displays
set up my monitors without the help of amdcccle.

[Bug 853575] [NEW] Launching anki freezes the desktop in Oneiric

2011-09-18 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

I installed Anki from the Ubuntu Software Center, and launching it
freezes the desktop or causes the window manager to crash. This didn't
happen using Anki 1.2.8 in Natty.

I got the bug to happen in a 32-bitfresh install of Oneiric on

MacbookPro3,1.

Please let me know if I can supply more information to help debug this.

[Bug 804841] [NEW] Can't switch to PinYin mode in the compose IME

2011-07-02 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

The compose IME displays a bar that has, among other things, 3 colored
circles for tweaking the options. Up until maverick, clicking on the
first (light green) circle would switch the IME to pinyin mode, which
has sequences such as i) - i with a circumflex hat. The light green
circle turned light blue (teal?) to acknowledge the transition.

In 11.04, clicking the circle doesn't do anything. I also tried using
the right Shift key, as documented in
http://code.google.com/p/ibus/wiki/TableReadme and it also didn't do
anything. I was expecting a circle color change and, most importantly,
being able to type the extra characters.

Thank you for your help!

[Bug 775367] [NEW] Keep In Launcher creates shortcut to wrong binary

2011-05-02 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I downloaded Eclipse 3.6.2 in ~/eclipse and I launched ~/eclipse/eclipse
using the File Manager. I right-clicked on the Launcher icon and
selected Keep In Launcher. Then I exited Eclipse, and launched it again
using the Launcher shortcut. To my surprise, the packaged Eclipse
(version 3.5.2) was launched.

Clarifications: I have Ubuntu's packaged version installed because it's
an easy way to get all the dependencies. I don't use it because it's
old. This bug is about the Launcher icon pointing to the wrong binary,
not about updating Eclipse.

Workaround: I can get correct behavior through a cumbersome process. I
created a menu entry for Eclipse 3.6.2, I used it to launch Eclipse, and
I right-clicked on the Launcher icon and selected Keep In Launcher.
That results in a proper shortcut. I used these instructions for
creating the menu entry: http://askubuntu.com/questions/13758/how-can-i
-edit-create-new-launcher-items-in-unity-by-hand/30530#30530

It seems like Unity uses some heuristic to decide that my process maps
to the Eclipse icon, and the heuristic doesn't account for the binary's
full path. I think the behavior is confusing and can result in
frustration, and should be fixed. Thank you very much!

[Bug 764382] [NEW] unity hooks up app menu to Hyper key

2011-04-18 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I upgraded to 11.04 and love unity, with the exception of the fact that
it stole Hyper away from me. The start menu / app menu is already bound
to Super, and it should remain that way. I remapped Caps Lock to Hyper,
so that I can use it for IME switching.

In conclusion, please stick to hooking Super for the start menu. AFAIK,
real keyboards don't have a Hyper key, and if people map something to
Hyper, it's for custom use.

Thank you so much!

[Bug 759699] [NEW] Gstreamer encountered a general stream error

2011-04-13 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pithos

This happens when I use a Razer Megalodon USB headset. It doesn't happen
when I use an analog headset connected to my internal sound card, or
when I use an Apple 27 screen connected via mini DisplayPort. Is there
anything I can do to help narrow down the cause?

If it makes a difference, the Razer headset advertises itself as 7.1,
whereas everything else is stereo.

[Bug 759266] [NEW] Random crash while working on battery / WiFi

2011-04-12 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure what happened, I hope the stack trace will make sense. I
updated to Natty last night, and I was working on battery for the first
time today. I worked on wifi before, the system didn't crash for a few
hours. I've been on battery for ~30 minutes. I got 2 more crash notices
while filling out this report, so I think the bug will show up in a
consistent manner.

Been running on battery power for an hour or so, and started software
update. I was downloading update packages at the time, and the downloads
completed. Guessing it's related to the hike in data transfer rate.

@Herton: Thank you for looking into this!

I think I got the same crash on the current kernel.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/736021

I don't have a reliable way of reproducing it, so I'll figure that out
before I try the ppa kernel that you pointed me to.

[Bug 641161] Re: Dell inspiron mini 1010 (Atom Z530 1Gb RAM) won't boot after installing Ubuntu

2010-10-07 Thread Victor Costan
I didn't have a USB stick handy, so I used update-manager -d on a
10.04.1 install. It worked!

Assuming the bug is relegated to grub2, this means it's fixed on my
machine. I'll try to do a clean install off the USB stick later today,
though.

2010-10-05 Thread Victor Costan
@Moles: FWIW, I had no USB devices connected to my Mini throughout the
installation and boot process. This doesn't mean grub2's USB drivers are
not to blame (maybe the driver gets stuck at initialization time), but
removing all USB devices isn't a valid workaround for everyone

[Bug 634571] Re: vinagre fails to connect to any VNC server

2010-10-03 Thread Victor Costan
@Robbie: To me, having a package installed by default in a distribution
is an implicit endorsement for the package, and a guarantee that the
developers have tested the package, and it works for most cases.

I am extremely grateful for everything that Ubuntu is doing, and I'm
trying to give back a bit, by running beta builds and reporting bugs.
However, I do agree with @waspinator's last point -- if a package is
known to be completely broken, it should be pulled out. Broken auto-
installed applications ruin the image of both Ubuntu and all Linux-based
distributions.

This bug has been reported a month ago, is a clear show-stopper for the
app, and has a patch that seems to get the package in a better state
(clearly broken - maybe broken in a subtle way). If nothing is done
about it by the time 10.10 ships, I will consider that the time I'm
spending testing and filing bugs is wasted.

[Bug 641161] Re: Dell inspiron mini 1010 (Atom Z530 1Gb RAM) won't boot after installing Ubuntu

2010-10-03 Thread Victor Costan
I did a fresh install of 10.04.1 on the netbook, then updated to the
latest packages on 9/30, then updated to 10.10 via update-manager on the
same day. I'm having the same boot issue described before. So the
problem seems to be in grub2, not in ubiquity. Since 10.04.1 can boot,
this is a regression introduced in 10.10.

[Bug 641161] Re: Dell inspiron mini 1010 (Atom Z530 1Gb RAM) won't boot after installing Ubuntu

2010-09-29 Thread Victor Costan
I can do a failed install, then boot the live ISO again and set up a ssh
server so you can take a look at the filesystem. Would that help?

I suspect there's a regression in the grub setup since 10.04.

[Bug 641161] Re: Dell inspiron mini 1010 (Atom Z530 1Gb RAM) won't boot after installing Ubuntu

2010-09-23 Thread Victor Costan
Hi Evan!

Sorry this took forever.

If I boot without shift pressed, I get a blank text-mode screen with a
cursor blinking under the top-left character. No logos, no nothing.

Pressing shift gives me GRUB loading on the first line, and a blinking
cursor on the first character at the second line. I'm not getting a
menu, so I can't mess with boot options.

2010-09-17 Thread Victor Costan
I just installed 10.04.1 i386 on the netbook, and it boots, so the
netbook doesn't seem to have any hardware defects. It seems like a
regression to me.

In case it helps figure things out, the 10.04.1 setup shows the Ubuntu
logo when loading up (KMS, I'm assuming), and 10.10 shows Ubuntu and
blinking dots in text mode.

[Bug 641795] [NEW] Remote Desktop Viewer refuses to connect to vino server on 10.04.1 i386

2010-09-17 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

I'm running a VNC server that I set up via System Preferences Remote
Desktop. The server is running Ubuntu 10.04.1 i386, updated tonight.
When connecting, I get an error dialog with no window title, heading
Connection closed, text Connection to host pwnall's remote desktop on
lightbulb2 was closed..

My server shows up in vinagre's Hosts nearby list. I tried connecting
by clicking on that entry, and by clicking on the Connect button and
setting up the connection manually.

I installed TightVNC Viewer via the vncviewer package, and it works.

[Bug 641020] [NEW] package linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic 2.6.35-22.32 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2010-09-16 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

I made a /boot partition with 256mb, because I wanted btrfs on /. Every
time I upgrade the kernel, it runs out of space.

Please do the following to avoid this situation:
* delete old kernels when installing new ones, and/or
* figure out a good size for /boot, and put that recommendation in the
installer (it knows to tell me that I need /boot if I select btrfs for /, so
there seems to be a system for recommendations in place)

Thank you!

Are you sure it's the same bug? I was using a daily-live image built on

[Bug 634703] [NEW] /usr/bin/ruby should use the alternatives system

2010-09-10 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

ruby1.8, ruby1.9, and ruby1.9.1 should set up their binaries using
Debian's alternatives system, so I can easily choose which one I want.
Ideally, the choices for related binaries (rubygems and irb) would be
linked to the choice of ruby.

I am interested in this change because I would like to use ruby 1.9.2
(available as ruby1.9.1) for much of my development work, and I'd like
to switch to it on my production servers. Of course, all these systems
run on Ubuntu.

Thank you!

[Bug 634703] Re: /usr/bin/ruby should use the alternatives system

2010-09-10 Thread Victor Costan
The commands below roughly express what I want. They seem to work for my
system.

# Rubygems seems to set up its own alternatives, but switching between gem1.8
and gem1.9.1 didn't switch the ruby interpreter.
sudo update-alternatives --remove-all gem

# 1.8 - 1.8.7
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/ruby ruby /usr/bin/ruby1.8 5
--slave /usr/bin/gem rubygems /usr/bin/gem1.8 --slave /usr/bin/irb irb
/usr/bin/irb1.8

# 1.9 - 1.9.2
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/ruby ruby /usr/bin/ruby1.9.1 10
--slave /usr/bin/gem rubygems /usr/bin/gem1.9.1 --slave /usr/bin/irb irb
/usr/bin/irb1.9.1

[Bug 635474] [NEW] Stuck trying to fetch update files from the internet

2010-09-10 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I tried to install 10.10 live (desktop i386), and my Internet connection
is not very reliable. The connection went down for a few minutes, and
I'm pretty sure it happened while ubiquity was fetching the updated
package lists -- the status got stuck at fetching file 2 of 6. I tried
pressing the Skip button, but that did nothing. In the end, I had to
restart the installation process.

[Bug 632284] [NEW] gnome-terminal is slow during vertical scrolling

2010-09-07 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Reproduce by typing the following command in a blank shell

for i in {1..200}; do echo Some random echo output for line $i; done

The following methods for scrolling are significantly slower than in OSX's
Terminal.app (I believe they're also slower than in previous versions of
Ubuntu, but I don't have anything handy to test):
* mouse-wheel scrolling
* clicking near the top of the scroll bar when all the way at the bottom
* clicking near the bottom of the scroll bar when all the way at the top
* clicking on either the top or the bottom arrow of the scroll bar

This bug makes it really hard for me to do development work in Ubuntu.

[Bug 632011] [NEW] gnome-language-selector won't install language support

2010-09-06 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: language-selector

I tried to install support for Chinese (simplified and traditional)
input methods and extra fonts. When I clicked Apply Changes, it popped
a dialog titled Software database is broken, saying It is impossible
to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager
Synaptic or run sudo apt-get install -f in a terminal to fix this
issue at first.
