[Bug 1084373] Re: [Feature] Early load microcode for x86 CPU

2014-08-05 Thread Yingying Zhao
HI Tim,

Can you please elaborate the policy concern?

Is it a license issue? As linux-firmware also contains binary files
which is in main repository and loaded by default. From the perspective
of binary, I don't know the difference of cpu microcode vs. device
firmwares.

As the Intel cpu microcode is used to correct errata in the processor
which is important for users who uses the affected platforms. Even the
intel-microcode can't be moved to the main repository, is there a way to
automatically notify Ubuntu users that there's a cpu microcode update?
And users can make their decision to install the package or not.

Thanks for your information and advice!

2014-07-30 Thread Yingying Zhao
Tim,

I did make some mistake in my comment #8, let me make the correction:
Ubuntu 14.04 supports this feature while Ubuntu 14.10 doesn't.

Currently, the intel-microcode package is in universe repository, is
it okay to move it to the main repository, so that CPU new microcode
can be loaded by default?

[Bug 1083994] Re: [Feature] Haswell ULT - Near Field Communication(NFC) support

2013-03-25 Thread Yingying Zhao
Update for the neard developer - Samuel Ortiz:

neard has been packaged and sponsored by a Debian developer (Guillem
Jover). It's now in the Debian FTP master queue:

http://ftp-master.debian.org/new/neard_0.10+git20130322-1.html

which means it will be in Debian in a few days/weeks, depending on how
fast the queue is processed.

It may be interesting for the Canonical folks to have a look at it. If
they want to package it before it hits Debian unstable, they can look
at:

git://github.com/sameo/neard-deb.git

This is what the Debian packaging is based on.

From syslog, HW detection error causes this problem and dmesg shows request
for firmware file 'iwlwifi-6000g2a-4.ucode' failed.
So I suspect adding the missing firmware in the installation kernel could fix
this issue. The firmware iwlwifi-6000g2a-4.ucode can be downloaded from
http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads and Tim Gardner just added this
firmware in Natty Linux-firmware 1.42.

[Bug 283126] Re: OS can't hiberate and suspend.

The driver of some device can't handle the suspend/hibernate event as expected
from our investigation.
After upgraded to Intrepid final, we can't reproduce it on HP-2230s.

But I can still reproduce this issue on SONY Vaio VGN-Z540. There's a patch
fixing this bug for the SONY laptop which already in kernel 2.6.28-rc3:

commit 6158d3a2323835546c7cf83a170316fa77b726e0

Subject: [PATCH -stable] disable CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE due to possible memory
 corruption on module unload

While debugging the e1000e corruption bug with Intel, we discovered
today that the dynamic ftrace code in mainline is the likely source of
 this bug.

For the stable kernel we are providing the only viable fix patch: labeling
CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE as broken. (see the patch below)

We will follow up with a backport patch that contains the fixes. But since
the fixes are not a one liner, the safest approach for now is to
 disable the code in question.

The cause of the bug is due to the way the current code in mainline
handles dynamic ftrace. When dynamic ftrace is turned on, it also
turns on CONFIG_FTRACE which enables the -pg config in gcc that places
a call to mcount at every function call. With just CONFIG_FTRACE this
causes a noticeable overhead. CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE works to ease this
overhead by dynamically updating the mcount call sites into nops.

The problem arises when we trace functions and modules are unloaded.
The first time a function is called, it will call mcount and the mcount
call will call ftrace_record_ip. This records the calling site and
stores it in a preallocated hash table. Later on a daemon will
wake up and call kstop_machine and convert any mcount callers into
 nops.

The evolution of this code first tried to do this without the kstop_machine
and used cmpxchg to update the callers as they were called. But I
was informed that this is dangerous to do on SMP machines if another
CPU is running that same code. The solution was to do this with
 kstop_machine.

We still used cmpxchg to test if the code that we are modifying is
indeed code that we expect to be before updating it - as a final
 line of defense.

But on 32bit machines, ioremapped memory and modules share the same
address space. When a module would load its code into memory and execute
some code, that would register the function.

On module unload, ftrace incorrectly did not zap these functions from
its hash (this was the bug). The cmpxchg could have saved us in most
cases (via luck) - but with ioremap-ed memory that was exactly the wrong
thing to do - the results of cmpxchg on device memory are undefined.
(and will likely result in a write)

The pending .28 ftrace tree does not have this bug anymore, as a general push
towards more robustness of code patching, this is done differently: we do not
use cmpxchg and we do a WARN_ON and turn the tracer off if anything deviates
from its expected state. Furthermore, patch sites are statically identified
during build time so there's no runtime discovery of dynamic code areas
anymore, and no room for code unmaps to cause the hash to become out of date.

We believe the fragility of dynamic patching has been sufficiently
addressed in the development code via the static patching method, but further
suggestions to make it more robust are welcome.

There is a detailed reproduce steps. The above is the steps in dmesg.

1. Run NetworkManager-0.7, it can't connect to APs, from
dmesg, driver always
try to associate one BSSID (here, we call BSSID-1)
2. Reload driver, driver also tries to associate the BSSID-1
3. Kill NetworkManager
4. Run iwlist wlan0 scan , scanning result lists only the
AP(SSID-1) with
BSSID-1
5. Run iwconfig wlan0 essid SSID-2, association success!
6. Run iwlist wlan0 scan again, now scanning result lists
all the APs around.
7. Run NetworkManger again, get same result in step 1 and the
driver still
tries to associate with BSSID-1

[Bug 263555] Re: [intrepid] 2.6.27 e1000e kernel places Intel gigE chipsets at risk

2008-09-18 Thread Yingying Zhao
We just met a similar issue in the testing for Intrepid Alpha5. In the
beginning, the LAN works fine for x86 system. But after we met a system
hangs up in X86_64 system (caused by gfx) in the same machine,we found
the Ethernet card can't work any more. lspci can't show the correct
Ethernet card info. The X86 system which e1000e works before can't
recognize the card neither.

Our investigation is underway now.

2008-09-18 Thread Yingying Zhao
Intrepid Alpha5 x86_64 still has this problem, while Alpha5 x86 doesn't.
And in my testing, the virtual effect is set as none.

[Bug 267002] Re: laptop sometimes hangs at boot

2008-09-09 Thread Yingying Zhao
How is the result on 2.6.27-rc3 kernel? We did some testing for
2.6.27-rc3(iwl3945 1.2.26kds) kernel on laptop T60 and didn't get this
issue. And also please try this new 3945 uCode from
http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-3945-ucode-15.28.1.6.tgz
in your testing.

And does iwl3945 work by modprobe iwl3945 manually after booting into
system with wireless disabled.

The iwlwifi 5000 uCode is available at:
http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-5000-ucode-5.4.A.11.tar.gz

Besides iwlwifi 5000 uCode, Intel also released updates for 4965 and 3945
uCode. Do we need to trigger another SRU request for uCode?

[Bug 261101] Re: Changing resolution via gnome-display-properities causes screen black and system lost response

2008-08-26 Thread Yingying Zhao
For Montevina, when execute xrander -s 1, the screen displays mess-up.

I did some update on X61(SantaRosa), and now gnome-display-properties
and xrander -s -1 don't cause screen black. But the maxsize of
resolution is only 800x600.

[Bug 256833] Re: [Intrepid] Alpha3 - Failed to change X resolution on Intel Montevina

2008-08-11 Thread Yingying Zhao
To investigate the root cause, we're upgrading the gfx drivers. But
libdrm2-dev package is not there in the alpha3 repository.
Would Ubuntu supply the libdrm2-dev package for alpha3 build, so that we can
continue our investigation asap?
