[Bug 1465479] Re: Palm detection does not work on synaptics touchpad
I found the resolution to this bug lies in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-settings-daemon/+bug/1351772 I wonder why the issue is not yet resolved if it is so easy to fix? A new user should ideally get a flawless experience out of the box on newly purchased hardware rather than spend weeks frustrated about simple things. No wonder that Windows rules the market. [Bug 1465479] [NEW] Palm detection does not work on synaptics touchpad
Public bug reported: I am unable to type properly on the Dell xps 13 2015 model (Ubuntu vivid) without first disabling "click to touch" in settings. The cursor jumps to wherever the mouse pointer is and starts typing from that point. Currently I cant type even three words straight without the third word getting inserted somewhere in between the earlier words or entire paragraphs getting deleted because of auto-selection... I tried setting PalmMinZ=100 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-synaptics.conf but no luck after a reboot. According to this page : http://xps13-9333.appspot.com/#touchpad this was fixed in kernel 3.16 but I am on kernel 3.19 and the problem still exists. I use a dell xps 13 9343 with a 3200x1800 screen res and adding the command xserver-command=X -dpi 144 to the lightdm.conf results in Ubuntu booting in low res troubleshooting mode - I never get to the unity- greeter screen. [Bug 1463869] [NEW] 15.0.4 on xps 13 9343 does not boot with uefi secureboot
Public bug reported: I just wiped off Windows 8 from my new Dell XPS 13 9343 and did a clean install of Ubuntu 15.0.4. It did not boot in UEFI secure mode. I had to disable secureboot to boot Ubuntu. Not sure if this is because Dell has not embedded the CA cert signed by Microsoft in this machine and used to sign the first-stage UEFI bootloader/shim or if its actually a problem that can be fixed by using another key to sign the shim? DELL does supply a developer edition of XPS 13 with Ubuntu and perhaps they use a bootloader with different keys than whats in the standard shim? Let me know if I should open a ticket with DELL instead or if you can check the DELL version of Ubuntu about what keys they have used and supply that in the default shim? Apologies if the problem description is inaccurate or confusing due to some incorrect assumption. Feel free to correct my understanding of it. [Bug 324389] [NEW] sda sdb auto renamed to sdc sdd, boot fail
Public bug reported: First encountered in CR Bug #270118 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/270118 for 8.0.4 32 bit Turns out that this is an arbitrary problem. The only thing that saved me from a complete boot fail was the UUID disk string in grub. The fstab entries were looking for a sda and sdb device while during this boot they were renamed to sdc sdd. This time the problem recurred for 8.0.4.2 64bit Linux owl 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 01:04:16 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux Looks like inserting a SD MMC card in my Dell 2408WFP results in renumbering - the SDMMC becomes sda while the HDD becomes sdc. Possibly might occur only when Bios detect for USB HDD is enabled - I will post update about this after reboot check with bios feature disabled. Attaching dmesg and dmesg.0 showing that disks have been renamed. My guess is the kernel scsi driver code needs fixing. Wow! You are the second person in the Ubuntu community recommending this. I can now only infer that many of you folks have not yet grasped the meaning of LTS and Ubuntu's commitment to support it? Asking users to upgrade at the drop of a hat and not considering what is broken in a stable release is one big mistake that will hit your movements credibility badly. A user who downloads a release 6 months old and one step behind the current one, does so for very good reasons - stability and absence of minor irritants that would have been fixed with over a period. Instead in your eagerness for one-upmanship and to have the last word, you have forgotten your responsibility and closed the bug without acknowledging the real issue > > Instead of trying to point out the flaws of distributions and their > documentation, ... > CRs are for pointing out flaws in a product :). Agreed perhaps in a better way than I originally posted, but nonetheless... The issue reported here is not one hard to debug bug that slipped through the cracks. This is a simple matter of content management on your systems - the URL for a critical driver repository is broken that too for an older release considered stable. It may be a small error for you to fix, but for a user staying up till 2am to finish off an install and move on - its a big deal when even an older stable release is so fundamentally broken. [Bug 270118] [NEW] HDD rename after 09/12 update (incl. GCC and glibc) caused boot failure
Public bug reported: Hello I would like to report a catastrophic failure after the 09/12 update. I have tried to recollect and list the exact sequence of events that occurred: 1.Update manager prompted me for updates to GCC and Glibc etc (as I recall from memory) on 09/12. Installed it and shutdown. 2.On 09/13, Boot failed and Ubuntu jumped to root prompt. After some exploring, I found that my two HDD had been renamed from sda and sdb to sdc and sdd. ( I made no bios changes). 3. I recalled seeing some fsck errors that scrolled by the screen so I ran fsck -y on sdc3but it could not auto repair 4. I mounted the sdc3 root partition (formerly sda3) 5. Tried to run vi /etc/fstab to change some entries but since PATH was not set ( it was only /bin:/sbin, I had to set it from cmdline). I located the path to vi and exported the PATH variable adding /usr/local/bin and sbin folders. 5. Tried to run vi but got command not found 6. ls command now showed NO files on the entire partition except lost+found!! 7. Booting from the install CD, df -h shows there is still data on the mounted partition with correct free/used stats: /dev/sda3 46G 36G 7.6G 83% /media So it seems there were two problems: HDDs were reordered. fsck blew my inode tables. Re: [Bug 264800] Re: wallpaper dissapeared, not being applied
Pedro It worked for another user. After a reboot, everything looks fine. I did not mention that all my desktop icons lso went missing and the right-click on desktop was not working or showing a menu. I guess meta-gnome is the natural choice for anything broken with gnome, when you don't know which package is the problem. sorry about that. The reason I opened a bug report and not mailed the forum was because I want to emphasize that such things should never happen *especially when a user has not tinkered with any settings*. Imagine this for a corporate desktop when you login to do some critical urgent work and all your icons and desktop links dissappear. The Issue is not about if there was a workaround that resolves the matter by asking a few questions on the forum (that may involve hours to research for an unfamiliar user, or being forced to reboot) . A user should never have to encounter such a basic problem. I think most people will appreciate it if no matter what is broken, the desktop and basic functions always work. I run Ubuntu 8.0.4 Gnome 2.22.3. Thanks for your time, and I hope something can be done about this. PS: What is the correct package for this? I mean which of the 100+ packages do I start researching to locate where the fault lies? (mind you I was a www.linuxfromscratch.org user in 2003-2005 and I am not averse to it :) ). And honestly do you think a windows user migrating to Linux will research this? [Bug 238670] Re: gnome power manager No option in logoff dialog for suspend
I see the same problem appeared yesterday after I updated Ubuntu Hardy/Gnome . Yesterday 27th Aug 2008, the suspend option disappeared in the screen that has buttons for shutdown, logout, lock screen, switch user etc ... now the hibernate button has vanished!! I am unable to suspend or hibernate because there are no buttons in any app anywhere now!! Unfortunately I changed syslog so the dist-upgrade was not logged in /var/log but there appears to be some regression in the Ubuntu updates after 26th. [Bug 255616] [NEW] Hang - cannot switch to console before Gnome login after latest update
Public bug reported: Hi Until my last update prompted by the update manager, I could CTRL-ALT+Fn to console and other TTYs before I logged in via gdm. Now the system hangs - screen blanks, cannot recover gdm login window either. Caps Numlock LEDs do not work, however ATRL-ALT-DEL reboots my system, so its not a complete keyboard freeze. Switching TTYs works AFTER login to Gnome. Funnily the updates all related to KDE 4,1 not gdm which is my default. Copying dpkg.log for the 6th. I installed KDE 4.1 on the 3rd but I don't use KDE - have a bug report 254483 for other issues too. 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 23:41:49 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux dpkg -s linux-ubuntu-modules-$(uname -r) Package: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-19-generic Status: install ok installed Priority: optional Section: base Installed-Size: 15280 Maintainer: Ubuntu Kernel Team <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Architecture: i386 Source: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 Version: 2.6.24-19.28 Provides: ndiswrapper-modules-1.9 Depends: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic Pre-Depends: dpkg (>= 1.10.24) Description: Ubuntu supplied Linux modules for version 2.6.24 on x86/x86_64 This package contains modules supplied by Ubuntu for Linux kernel 2.6.24 on x86/x86_64. lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 Host Bridge 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 PCI to PCI bridge (int gfx) 00:0a.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 PCI to PCI bridge (PCIE port 5) 00:11.0 SATA controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 SATA Controller [AHCI mode] 00:12.0 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI0 Controller 00:12.1 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI1 Controller 00:12.2 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB EHCI Controller 00:13.0 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI0 Controller 00:13.1 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI1 Controller 00:13.2 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB EHCI Controller 00:14.0 SMBus: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 SMBus Controller (rev 3a) 00:14.1 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 IDE Controller 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia 00:14.3 ISA bridge: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 LPC host controller 00:14.4 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 PCI to PCI Bridge 00:14.5 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI2 Controller 00:18.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] HyperTransport Technology Configuration 00:18.1 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Address Map 00:18.2 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] DRAM Controller 00:18.3 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Miscellaneous Control 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3200 Graphics 01:05.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS780 Azalia controller 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. [Bug 254483] [NEW] KDE 4.1 problem with 1920x1200 res
Public bug reported: Hi All Jut installed KDE 4.1 on instructions here: http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-To-Install-KDE-4-1-On-Ubuntu-8-04-91034.shtml. I found it covers the entire screen in 1280x1024 mode only. Monitor is Dell 2408WFP. In 1920x1200 mode the launcher panel appears 1/3 way up from the bottom, the wall paper also covers roughly about 2/3rds of the screen (not square but 16:10). The rest of the screen is a grey-white checkerboard pattern. I use the AMDCCCLE Catalyst 8.7. Works fine on Gnome. 8.0.4 Hardy 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 23:41:49 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux. lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 Host Bridge 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 PCI to PCI bridge (int gfx) 00:0a.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 PCI to PCI bridge (PCIE port 5) 00:11.0 SATA controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 SATA Controller [AHCI mode] 00:12.0 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI0 Controller 00:12.1 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI1 Controller 00:12.2 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB EHCI Controller 00:13.0 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI0 Controller 00:13.1 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI1 Controller 00:13.2 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB EHCI Controller 00:14.0 SMBus: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 SMBus Controller (rev 3a) 00:14.1 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 IDE Controller 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia 00:14.3 ISA bridge: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 LPC host controller 00:14.4 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 PCI to PCI Bridge 00:14.5 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 USB OHCI2 Controller 00:18.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] HyperTransport Technology Configuration 00:18.1 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Address Map 00:18.2 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] DRAM Controller 00:18.3 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Miscellaneous Control 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3200 Graphics 01:05.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS780 Azalia controller 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Public bug reported: Problem is particularly bad when PC is booted with CD in tray. it never spins down. If I boot without CD in tray and insert CD for playback, the problem appears to die after a while if I remember right. This problem does not happen in XP so it doesn't look like a bios or cd firmware problem. [Bug 254363] Re: suspend resume problem on AMD 780G/SB700
I mentioned the usb ports on monitor because until last week suspend was not possible due to what looks like a usb device error in the logs. I think Hibernate is failing because I don't use a swap device. I suspected the DELL monitor for this. Will attach those logs if I locate where I saved them. [Bug 254363] [NEW] suspend resume problem on AMD 780G/SB700
Public bug reported: Hello My system went into suspend due to idle state. Resume had the problems: 1. On resume console fonts are corrupt (smearing, blurring, smudging effect) and unreadable. 2. Takes a long time to show even the console (30+ secs). HDD led was constantly on. This problem was noticed with Amarok playing CD when suspend occurs. I use Gnome. 3. X Screen blank, password unlock screen flashes for a second then I have to type the password at a blank screen. Display is recoverable only after CTRL-ALT-BKSPC 4. Audio device is muted, no sound even if I quit & relaunch the player.
