[Bug 1174275] Re: Random system freeze in 13.04

2013-10-04 Thread max
Hi.
Had the same issues with ubuntu 12.04/12.10/13.04 on my laptop.
The solution I found is to replace the kernel with the upstream kernel
3.9.0-030900-generic.
It breaks the wifi , but that was fixed by installing the driver provided by
Broadcom.
It's been 3 days since my last freeze ... still in testing.

[Bug 1223332] Re: [snb mesa blorp] False GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x7a000002

2013-09-23 Thread Max Moulds
My keyboard is fully supported and I was routed to this bug. I do have
man video issues tho. Mainly artifacts. especially when browsing the
web, does not seem to be browser specific, nor does it see to be page
specific. It creates rendering issues only in the page view area except
in chrome where the tab descriptions are affected. The system menus are
not. It may be related to other bugs in the default ubuntu video player
(?totem still?) and vlc where the video files played cause the same
issue, albeit rarely, and again no specifics observed.

But more importantly no keyboard issues here.

That being said the menu key always does seem to be pre-pressed on login
meaning the dock is expanded at login, but it is not disabled

Your system needs some quirk I suppose. BTW, your system only have two

Hi zombi

for me doing a bindfs mount on top of the webdav mount and then
mounting the ecryptfs on the bindfs mount worked.

does this work with distributed editing?
e.g
- mounting from device A
- mounting from device B
- edit on device A

are the changes properly reflected on device B ?

[Bug 1181789] Re: second call of 'initctl start' leads to fork instead of exec ('mount: / is busy' during shutdown)

2013-08-10 Thread Max
I have built upstart_1.9.1-0ubuntu3 for Ubuntu 13.04 Raring.
I do not see the bug with ureadahead anymore.
However once I have seen busy / on shutdown
due to modem-manager and its file in /var/log/upstart
opened for writing.

There are a couple of minor issues with sources
in saucy and their backproting.

Automake 1.11 in Raring does not have the option serial-tests
(introduced in 1.12), so configure.ac must be edited.

Tests rely on exact test messages, so dpkg-buildpackage
must be run with LANG=C, otherwise one test fails.

Due to the issue with modem-manager I am in doubt
if upstart-1.9 should be included to updates of Raring.

I can change this key binding in CompizConfig Settings Manager (Unity
Plugin - Switcher) by setting key to flip through windows in the
switcher and key to flip through windows in the switcher backwards to
whichever combination I want.

[Bug 1173961] Re: [Gateway NV55C] Two backlight interfaces that wont adjust backlight.

2013-08-03 Thread Max Oropeza
When I'd do a fresh install starting with 12.04 (that's when I got the
laptop I'm using now) the backlight wouldn't work but it was just a
simple solution by changing the GRUB line to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor. So when
the time came to update to 12.10 it happened again and that was the
solution again, but not with 13.04.

[Bug 1173961] Backlight upstream bug

2013-08-03 Thread Max Oropeza
Hello, I filled a buf report on Launchpad about a backlight issue (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1173961 ). ONe of
the people there suggested to file an upstream bug report and the first
step was to email the maintainer. I don't know what to say since I'm
still sort of knew to Linux and Ubuntu. If you need any additional
information please ask and I'll do the best I can.

It doesn't really say what to say just who to send it to. Which is why I
included this page. It only said to CC this page so emails can appear
here.

[Bug 1173961] Backlight upstream bug

2013-08-03 Thread Max Oropeza
[Gateway NV55C] Two backlight interfaces that wont adjust backlight.

Full Description:
I couldn't get the backlight to work after I upgraded to 13.04.

WORKAROUND: The only grub lines that seem to work are these:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_osi=

I tried changing the grub parameters, and after several trys, nothing. I
was asked to run grep . /sys/class/backlight/*/* and got the results of:

maxo@Dayman:~$ grep . /sys/class/backlight/*/*
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness:9
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness:9
grep: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/device: Is a directory
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness:9
grep: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/power: Is a directory
grep: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/subsystem: Is a directory
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/type:firmware
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness:976
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness:976
grep: /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/device: Is a directory
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness:976
grep: /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/power: Is a directory
grep: /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/subsystem: Is a directory
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/type:raw

But using the Fn Keys, you can only adjust it a little, like from full
brightness to about half. To add something else, with the other
parameters when I adjust with the Fn Keys, the brightness bubble you get
on the top right of your screen doesn't appear.

[Bug 1173961] Re: [Gateway NV55C] Two backlight interfaces that wont adjust backlight.

2013-08-01 Thread Max Oropeza
So, I was able to install the kernel version 3.11.0-999-generic. Once I
rebooted, there was no difference. I changed the GRUB to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor AND
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_osi='!Windows 2012  AND
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor

acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor  AND quiet splash
acpi_osi='!Windows 2012made it possible to lower the brightness to
about halfway but it doesn't show the dialog that says the screen
brightness is lowering. But quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor shows
the dialog but doesn't lower the screen brightness. I left the GRUB with
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor   for
the meantime.

But when I have some actual notifications there, the messaging menu
remains silent, and no highlight appears.

[Bug 619913] Re: open should be an alias to xdg-open

2013-07-12 Thread max ulidtko
I have to bump this again.

Personallly, I've been using bash alias open=xdg-open for years. It's
EXTREMELY useful and convenient. And I do really want to stress that:
even though I generally avoid non-standard aliases for the command line
(just so that my habits won't depend too much on a widely unavailable
setup) — still, I can't work without just two aliases; one of them is
open=xdg-open.

I state that *twice* as long name is unacceptably long for the
ubiquitously common action of opening (think: double-clicking) a file
or directory. Users regularly want to open files and dirs. But
personally I don't care about fancy Freedesktop shims taking my time for
typing meaningless barely comprehensible characters, or for setting up
the alias in the few-hundredth time again.

On the other hand, opening a new text-mode VT is... uhh... extremely
uncommon need in the environment of a graphical desktop, I'd say.
Especially when we do already have a bunch of ones pre-opened by getty.

Also, the name isn't covered by fundamental standards akin to POSIX,
even the manpage says Earlier, openvt was called open; so the change
is not going to break compatibility from that side.

I will also go as far as to request concrete examples of automated
software which actually opens interactive terminal sessions using
openvt(1), and relying on the spelling of open.

Overall, the compatibility argument doesn't convice me a tiniest bit,
again personally. I don't see a huge tradeoff in accepting the miniscule
risks of the namespace change VS massive productivity gains for the
proper, convenient, and requested use of the name.

To summarize, my opinion is that some future-oriented revision for the
use of open command needs a great deal of more discussion.

[Bug 1198686] [NEW] Freshly-installed system won't boot on Eee PC

2013-07-07 Thread max thom stahl
Public bug reported:

When I install Ubuntu or Xubuntu on my Eee PC, the install happens with
no errors or troubles of any kind, the liveUSB environment works
perfectly, but when I reboot, my Eee PC 1215B laptop stops with Reboot
and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot
device and press a key. I have tried manually installing grub, manually
partitioning, and even fully manually installing Funtoo linux on the
system, but nothing has worked. The system is there, installed, when I
chroot into it from the liveUSB, but it's not able to boot.

Same results from installing 12.04 and 13.04.

this:

sudo apt-get install dkms

cd /usr/src
sudo mkdir psmouse-elantech-fix
sudo cp /path/to/downloaded/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/* psmouse-elantech-fix
# then build the drivers with dkms
sudo dkms add -m psmouse -v elantech-fix
sudo dkms build -m psmouse -v elantech-fix
sudo dkms install -m psmouse -v elantech-fix

and it should work. try reloading the psmouse driver
sudo modprobe -r psmouse ; sudo modprobe psmouse

xinput should now show ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad

[Bug 1181789] Re: second call of 'initctl start' leads to fork instead of exec ('mount: / is busy' during shutdown)

2013-06-13 Thread Max
The problem is in init/job_process.c, function job_process_run().
Upstart detects SHELL_CHARS in the exec line, so first time
it launches command with shell and exec wrappings

/bin/sh -e -c exec /bin/sh -c exit

and set script flag for the job's MAIN_PROCESS.
During the second initctl start and job_process_run
the script flags is set so the following line is passed
to job_process_span and execve

/bin/sh -e -c /bin/sh -c exit

Because of absent exec, shell forks, it is caught by
handler, so upstart believes that daemon has been started.

It seems that proc-script = TRUE; should not be set.

[Bug 1185838] Re: Mouse pointer corruption, radeon, dual-head

2013-06-10 Thread Max Bowsher
I have spent some time trying to better quantify how often the problem
reproduces in daily use with the raring kernel, and ironically I only
experienced the problem a couple of times in a week now that I'm
actually trying to reproduce it.

I have now switched to the 3.10-rc5 mainline build, and will see what
happens.

Unfortunately, due to the random nature of whether this reproduces or
not, it will likely be two weeks before I will be able to conclude with
reasonable certainty that an absence of occurrences actually indicates
an absence of the bug. On the other hand, if the problem recurs, I'll be
able to report back sooner.

[Bug 1181789] Re: upstart fails to track premature exit ('mount: / is busy' during shutdown)

2013-06-09 Thread Max
Quotes are crucial in the exec line of the .conf file.
The bug is reproducible with

expect fork
exec /bin/sh -c exit

But never happens for the following .conf

expect fork
exec /bin/sh -c exit

Quotes (or $ in the original ureadahead-other.conf) force
upstart to add shell wrapping. First time it leads to

lazy-daemon main process (3673) executable changed

I have no guess why during the second launch
job_process_trace_fork() is called instead of
job_process_trace_exec()

lazy-daemon main process (3681) became new process (3682)

I have not notice any variable within init (upstart) that may
control this behavior. Perhaps it is due to libnih.

[Bug 1188036] [NEW] debian-keyring is a rather heavyweight Recommends for ubuntu-dev-tools, perhaps demote to Suggests?

2013-06-06 Thread Max Bowsher
Public bug reported:

debian-keyring was promoted from a Suggests to a Recommends as a result
of a user report in bug 717245.

However, either behaviours of tools have changed since then, or there
was confusion between errors and warnings - if I use pull-debian-source
without having debian-keyring installed on raring, the only downside is
a couple of minor warning messages printed:

gpgv: Can't check signature: public key not found
dpkg-source: warning: failed to verify signature on
./squashfs-tools_4.2+20130409-1.dsc

but the package is unpacked successfully.

debian-keyring is a huge package (42MB .deb) compared to ubuntu-dev-tools (157K

[Bug 1187781] [NEW] command-not found crashes on umlaut

2013-06-05 Thread Max Beikirch
Public bug reported:

When I access my ubuntu 12.04 server via ssh and mistype a command so
that the word contains a umlaut (), command-not-found crashes. I
successfully reproduced this behavior.

Probably command-not-found will crash when a umlaut occours in a normal
shell rather than the ssh shell. However I didn't check this.

I am using Ubuntu 14.04.2 and command-not-found 0.2.46ubuntu6 .

[Bug 1181528] Re: /etc/init.d/umountroot: 'mount / is busy' due to upstart log file

2013-06-03 Thread Max
Reading init/job_process.c from upstart sources...
It seems that upstart launches ureadahead within a shell
since the exec line from /etc/init/ureadahead-other.conf
contains variable substitution ($MOUNTPOINT).
Is it possible that extra exec (init-sh-ureadahead)
confuses upstart process tracer?

[Bug 1185838] [NEW] Mouse pointer corruption, radeon, dual-head

2013-05-30 Thread Max Bowsher
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from quantal to raring, I am experiencing corruption of
my mouse pointer around once per day.

I am using a dual-head setup on an ATI RV730 GL [FirePro V3750].

When corruption occurs, the mouse pointer is usually some garbled
rearrangement of the pointer's pixels when the pointer is on one
monitor, becoming invisible when shifted to the other monitor.

Symptoms are a lot like
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55819 except raring's
kernel is a lot newer than the change referred to there, and I haven't
managed to locate any specific screen areas which affect the behaviour I
am seeing.

Unfortunately I am not able to reproduce corruption on demand, it just
happens from time to time during normal use.

[Bug 1181789] [NEW] upstart fails to track premature exit ('mount: / is busy' during shutdown)

2013-05-19 Thread Max
Public bug reported:

The real case for this issue is the Bug lp: #1181528 (ureadahead)
/etc/init.d/umountroot: 'mount / is busy' due to upstart log file
and a variant of Bug lp: #1073433
Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10
Upstart holds a file open for writing so /etc/init.d/umountroot
can not cleanly remount root filesystem readonly.

Assume the following job description that is simulation of
ureadahead-other.conf when there is no .pack file for a mount
file name=lazy-daemon.conf
description Debug open log file issue
manual
expect fork

exec /bin/sh -c 'echo I am tired 2 ; exit 4 '
/file

Let's start it

In general everything works as expected (However I am in doubt
concerning 'executable changed'

Let's start again (One more mount and call of ureadahead-other
for it)

start lazy-daemon
[ 8493.929425] init: Connection from private client
[ 8493.931370] init: lazy-daemon goal changed from stop to start

I do not expect fake fork here. There is no 3682 process.
In any case upstart has to close the log file

Bug #1124803 NetworkManager doesn't respond to SIGTERM in daemon mode

You can check if this bug is related to your problem
by the following commands
sudo initctl status ureadahead-other
sudo lsof | grep ureadahead

This issue assumes /var/log/upstart/ureadahead-other.log

[Bug 1181528] Re: /etc/init.d/umountroot: 'mount / is busy' due to upstart log file

2013-05-19 Thread Max
The problem can be reproduced when ureadahead-other
is disabled during boot (by manual in override file).
Second attempt to start for a mount that has no .pack
file (start ureadahead-other MOUNTPOINT=/srv)
leads to unclosed log file.

I have not managed to reproduce it by running
ureadahead from command line.
strace does not show any forks.

It is an Upstart issue. The pure case with shell command:

unrelated to ureadahead is Bug lp: #1181789.

[Bug 1181528] [NEW] /etc/init.d/umountroot: 'mount / is busy' due to upstart log file

2013-05-18 Thread Max
Public bug reported:

Steve Langasek insisted that this bug must be reported to ureadahead.
I am almost sure that it resides somewhere else, but I run out of ideas.
This is another brunch of the Bug lp: #1073433
'Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10'
Anyway inability to clearly remount root filesystem readonly is a serious issue.

During shutdown /etc/init.d/umountroot reports
  mount: / is busy
it leads to filesystem recovery next boot.

It happens due to a file opened by upstart:
init 1root 12w REG8,2 3442886145
/var/log/upstart/ureadahead-other.log
(reported by lsof)

For some reason init (upstart) decides that for the third filesystem
there is a fork of ureadahed.

[ 19.563541] init: ureadahead-other main process (912)
[ 19.566832] init: ureadahead-other main process (912) executable changed
[ 19.619194] init: ureadahead-other main process (912) terminated with status
4
[ 19.621332] init: ureadahead-other goal changed from start to stop
[ 19.623678] init: ureadahead-other state changed from spawned to stopping
[ 19.628290] init: ureadahead-other state changed from stopping to killed
[ 19.630631] init: ureadahead-other state changed from killed to post-stop
[ 19.632954] init: ureadahead-other state changed from post-stop to waiting
[ 21.787397] init: ureadahead-other goal changed from stop to start
[ 21.789750] init: ureadahead-other state changed from waiting to starting
[ 21.794433] init: ureadahead-other state changed from starting to pre-start
[ 21.796985] init: ureadahead-other state changed from pre-start to spawned
[ 21.800622] init: ureadahead-other main process (920)
[ 21.803883] init: ureadahead-other main process (920) became new process
(921)
[ 21.805935] init: ureadahead-other state changed from spawned to post-start
[ 21.808597] init: ureadahead-other state changed from post-start to running

later initctl status ureadahead-other reports
the process that is absent in ps output.

I would expect that the second ureadahead-other process
must exit with status 4 since there is no pack file.
/var/log/upstart/ureadahead-other.log:

ureadahead:/var/lib/ureadahead/home.pack: No such file or directory
ureadahead:/var/lib/ureadahead/srv.pack: No such file or directory

The bug also appears if there are pack and home.pack files but no srv.pack.
Init does not hold log file if there pack files for all mounted filesystems.
Perhaps the easiest way is to try mainline kernel that does not support
file tracing required for ureadahead (to avoid creation of pack files
during debug).

I am in doubt if someone can easily reproduce this bug although
I see it each boot under certain conditions.

The bug appears for 3 filesystems in /etc/fstab (/ /home /srv in my case).
I never seen it when just / and /home were mounted.
In my case / is ext4, the others are ext3.

The last time the bug disappeared after I removed /srv/mnt directory
from / filesystem (when /srv was not mounted). Now even srv.pack
is not required, just pack and home.pack is enough. But the first
boot when there were no pack files finished with busy /.

I have tried another partition instead of regularly mounted /srv.
There was no bug if that partition was mounted to /mnt
instead of /srv. The bug likes 'acl' in the mount options.

I do not know why mysterious fork happens during second call
of ureadadead-other, I can not reproduce it lunching ureadahead
from command line under strace.

Should the Ubuntu bugtask really be marked Fix Committed when it looks
like the fix has only landed into Unity upstream branches at present?

Also, when might this reach raring-proposed?

[Bug 1073433] Re: Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10

2013-05-16 Thread Max
'ps uw' only shows processes belonging to the current user.

Unless PID is specified

Also, please file a bug report against the ureadahead package
for this package, and post the number of the new bug here.

I would rather file a bug against upstart.
Ureadahead does his job and exits with status 4 or 5
depending either absent pack file or mainline kernel is running.
Init on the other hand does not close the log file for some reason.

There is a chance however that this variant of bug might be triggered
by more than one mount in addition to root filesystem.
/etc/init/ureadahead-other.conf does not contain instances.

[Bug 1169614] Re: /etc/init.d/umountroot: mount: / is busy due to dhclient is not stopped

2013-05-16 Thread Max
** Summary changed:

- dhclient is not stopped during shutdown
+ /etc/init.d/umountroot: mount: / is busy due to dhclient is not stopped

** Description changed:

  The result is
  mount: / is busy
and root filesystem recovery during next boot.

  network-manager 0.9.8.0-0ubuntu3 in Raring
neither stop dhclient in response to
stop network-manager nor remove pid file
  from /run/sendsigs.omit.d/
  So dhclient skipped by /etc/init.d/sendsigs
and a lease file is open for writing in
  /var/lib/NetworkManager
  while /etc/init.d/umountroot is running.
As a consequence root filesystem can not
be cleanly remount readonly before poweroff.

In default setup the problem is hidden by
plymouth. The problem does not appear
if network is disabled or the cable is unplugged
  before shutdown.

There are some other bugs that might be caused
- by this issue, but they are flooded with comments
- that have no direct relations to this bug.

[Bug 1073433] Re: Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10

2013-05-14 Thread Max
There is at least one more cause of busy / besides network-manager
in Raring 13.10.
I have noticed file /var/log/upstart/ureadahead-other.log opened
for writing by init when /etc/init.d/umountroot was running.
It seems that the problem was caused by absent pack file
in /var/lib/ureadahead/ for a partition added some time
after installation.
I can not find config responsible for presence of
/sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/fs
required for ureadahead.
I am in doubt if stop on condition is intentionally missed
in /etc/init/ureadahead-other.conf
I do not like ureadahead-other status
# initctl status ureadahead-other
ureadahead-other start/running, process 811
# ps uw 811
USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND

(no process 811)

[Bug 1162408] Re: little horizontal black lines sporadically appear

2013-05-13 Thread v-max
I have the same problem with my 900x3e. The first line of the screen is white,
also when I reboot. When I completly shut down the laptop the line goes away
for a few minutes and then comes back.
When xubuntu is fully booted the line is only about 1/5 of full screen width,
starting left.

It also happens once to me that I saw a line at about 200 pixels from
top while surfing the web. But this line disappeared after a few
minutes.

[Bug 1178843] [NEW] kdevelop won't start

2013-05-10 Thread Max Beikirch
Public bug reported:

When I type `kdevelop` into a shell (or start it from the dash), a small
grey rectangle appears on my screen ( I guess that should be the
splashscreen).

When I type `sudo kdevelop`, kdevelop starts but looks very ugly, more
like Windows 98 than KDE oder GTK.

lsb_release -rd yields:
Description:Ubuntu 13.04

apt-cache policy kdevelop yields:

[Bug 1173952] Re: Suspend and hibhernate not working in 13.04

2013-05-09 Thread max
Yes, „Unloading kernel module alx...Done“ in pm-suspend.log. I use cable
connection (driver=sky2) and even see there how it stops twinkle when I
try to suspend and everything freezes, until I push something to start
it again as if it was in sleep. How can the problem be in such driver
when it doesn't succeed also to shut down completely, after, as well,
everything seems to be halted, but the screen, the fan and so.. remain
on

[Bug 1173952] Re: Suspend and hibhernate not working in 13.04

2013-05-08 Thread max
As of comment #13, it doesn't work for me with Dell 1525. Before that
I've tried every such way, suggested here as well --
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pm-utils/+bug/1157435 . And
still the problem persists not only with suspend function but with
shutdown to the end. Until 13.04 I've never had anything like this, it
just worked

[Bug 1073433] Re: Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10

2013-05-04 Thread Max
Paul, In Quantal 12.10 it is the bug lp: #1124803
NetworkManager doesn't respond to SIGTERM in daemon mode.
And that patch fixes the issue for network-manager 0.9.6
(however there are no .deb packages).
In 13.04 Raring, network-manager maintainers in Ubuntu missed
that upstream dropped distro-specific defines,
so network-manager-0.9.8 packages is affected by
the bug lp: #1169614 dhclient is not stopped during shutdown.
These two bugs lead to the same result during shutdown:
mount: / is busy
That is actually hidden from the users by the plymouth
splash screen.
