[Bug 1174275] Re: Random system freeze in 13.04
Hi. Had the same issues with ubuntu 12.04/12.10/13.04 on my laptop. The solution I found is to replace the kernel with the upstream kernel 3.9.0-030900-generic. It breaks the wifi , but that was fixed by installing the driver provided by Broadcom. It's been 3 days since my last freeze ... still in testing. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1174275 Title: Random system freeze in 13.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1174275/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1223332] Re: [snb mesa blorp] False GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x7a000002
My keyboard is fully supported and I was routed to this bug. I do have man video issues tho. Mainly artifacts. especially when browsing the web, does not seem to be browser specific, nor does it see to be page specific. It creates rendering issues only in the page view area except in chrome where the tab descriptions are affected. The system menus are not. It may be related to other bugs in the default ubuntu video player (?totem still?) and vlc where the video files played cause the same issue, albeit rarely, and again no specifics observed. But more importantly no keyboard issues here. [Bug 1181789] Re: second call of 'initctl start' leads to fork instead of exec ('mount: / is busy' during shutdown)
I have built upstart_1.9.1-0ubuntu3 for Ubuntu 13.04 Raring. I do not see the bug with ureadahead anymore. However once I have seen busy / on shutdown due to modem-manager and its file in /var/log/upstart opened for writing. There are a couple of minor issues with sources in saucy and their backproting. Automake 1.11 in Raring does not have the option serial-tests (introduced in 1.12), so configure.ac must be edited. Tests rely on exact test messages, so dpkg-buildpackage must be run with LANG=C, otherwise one test fails. [Bug 1173961] Backlight upstream bug
[Gateway NV55C] Two backlight interfaces that wont adjust backlight. Full Description: I couldn't get the backlight to work after I upgraded to 13.04. WORKAROUND: The only grub lines that seem to work are these: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_osi= I tried changing the grub parameters, and after several trys, nothing. [Bug 619913] Re: open should be an alias to xdg-open
I have to bump this again. Personallly, I've been using bash alias open=xdg-open for years. It's EXTREMELY useful and convenient. And I do really want to stress that: even though I generally avoid non-standard aliases for the command line (just so that my habits won't depend too much on a widely unavailable setup) — still, I can't work without just two aliases; one of them is open=xdg-open. I state that *twice* as long name is unacceptably long for the ubiquitously common action of opening (think: double-clicking) a file or directory. Users regularly want to open files and dirs. But personally I don't care about fancy Freedesktop shims taking my time for typing meaningless barely comprehensible characters, or for setting up the alias in the few-hundredth time again. On the other hand, opening a new text-mode VT is... uhh... extremely uncommon need in the environment of a graphical desktop, I'd say. Especially when we do already have a bunch of ones pre-opened by getty. Also, the name isn't covered by fundamental standards akin to POSIX, even the manpage says Earlier, openvt was called open; so the change is not going to break compatibility from that side. I will also go as far as to request concrete examples of automated software which actually opens interactive terminal sessions using openvt(1), and relying on the spelling of open. Overall, the compatibility argument doesn't convice me a tiniest bit, again personally. I don't see a huge tradeoff in accepting the miniscule risks of the namespace change VS massive productivity gains for the proper, convenient, and requested use of the name. To summarize, my opinion is that some future-oriented revision for the use of open command needs a great deal of more discussion. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/619913 Title: open should be an alias to xdg-open To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdg-utils/+bug/619913/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1198686] [NEW] Freshly-installed system won't boot on Eee PC
Public bug reported: When I install Ubuntu or Xubuntu on my Eee PC, the install happens with no errors or troubles of any kind, the liveUSB environment works perfectly, but when I reboot, my Eee PC 1215B laptop stops with Reboot and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key. [Bug 1181789] Re: second call of 'initctl start' leads to fork instead of exec ('mount: / is busy' during shutdown)
The problem is in init/job_process.c, function job_process_run(). Upstart detects SHELL_CHARS in the exec line, so first time it launches command with shell and exec wrappings /bin/sh -e -c exec /bin/sh -c exit and set script flag for the job's MAIN_PROCESS. During the second initctl start and job_process_run the script flags is set so the following line is passed to job_process_span and execve /bin/sh -e -c /bin/sh -c exit Because of absent exec, shell forks, it is caught by handler, so upstart believes that daemon has been started. [Bug 1185838] Re: Mouse pointer corruption, radeon, dual-head
I have spent some time trying to better quantify how often the problem reproduces in daily use with the raring kernel, and ironically I only experienced the problem a couple of times in a week now that I'm actually trying to reproduce it. I have now switched to the 3.10-rc5 mainline build, and will see what happens. Unfortunately, due to the random nature of whether this reproduces or not, it will likely be two weeks before I will be able to conclude with reasonable certainty that an absence of occurrences actually indicates an absence of the bug. On the other hand, if the problem recurs, I'll be able to report back sooner. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1185838 Title: Mouse pointer corruption, radeon, dual-head To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1185838/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1181789] Re: upstart fails to track premature exit ('mount: / is busy' during shutdown)
Quotes are crucial in the exec line of the .conf file. The bug is reproducible with expect fork exec /bin/sh -c exit But never happens for the following .conf expect fork exec /bin/sh -c exit Quotes (or $ in the original ureadahead-other.conf) force upstart to add shell wrapping. First time it leads to lazy-daemon main process (3673) executable changed I have no guess why during the second launch job_process_trace_fork() is called instead of job_process_trace_exec() lazy-daemon main process (3681) became new process (3682) I have not notice any variable within init (upstart) that may control this behavior. Perhaps it is due to libnih. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181789 Title: upstart fails to track premature exit ('mount: / is busy' during shutdown) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/1181789/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1188036] [NEW] debian-keyring is a rather heavyweight Recommends for ubuntu-dev-tools, perhaps demote to Suggests?
Public bug reported: debian-keyring was promoted from a Suggests to a Recommends as a result of a user report in bug 717245. However, either behaviours of tools have changed since then, or there was confusion between errors and warnings - if I use pull-debian-source without having debian-keyring installed on raring, the only downside is a couple of minor warning messages printed: gpgv: Can't check signature: public key not found dpkg-source: warning: failed to verify signature on ./squashfs-tools_4.2+20130409-1.dsc but the package is unpacked successfully. debian-keyring is a huge package (42MB .deb) compared to ubuntu-dev-tools (157K .deb), so I'd suggest that it be demoted to a Suggests again, given the only purpose is to enable an optional feature. Paul, likely your system is affected by Bug #1124803 NetworkManager doesn't respond to SIGTERM in daemon mode You can check if this bug is related to your problem by the following commands sudo initctl status ureadahead-other sudo lsof | grep ureadahead This issue assumes /var/log/upstart/ureadahead-other.log open for writing. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181528 Title: /etc/init.d/umountroot: 'mount / is busy' due to upstart log file To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ureadahead/+bug/1181528/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1181528] Re: /etc/init.d/umountroot: 'mount / is busy' due to upstart log file
The problem can be reproduced when ureadahead-other is disabled during boot (by manual in override file). Second attempt to start for a mount that has no .pack file (start ureadahead-other MOUNTPOINT=/srv) leads to unclosed log file. I have not managed to reproduce it by running ureadahead from command line. strace does not show any forks. It is an Upstart issue. The cause of ureadahead issue is upstart. The pure case unrelated to ureadahead is Bug lp: #1181789. [Bug 1181528] [NEW] /etc/init.d/umountroot: 'mount / is busy' due to upstart log file
Public bug reported: Steve Langasek insisted that this bug must be reported to ureadahead. I am almost sure that it resides somewhere else, but I run out of ideas. This is another brunch of the Bug lp: #1073433 'Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10' Anyway inability to clearly remount root filesystem readonly is a serious issue. During shutdown /etc/init.d/umountroot reports mount: / is busy it leads to filesystem recovery next boot. It happens due to a file opened by upstart: init 1root 12w REG8,2 3442886145 /var/log/upstart/ureadahead-other.log (reported by lsof) For some reason init (upstart) decides that for the third filesystem there is a fork of ureadahed. I would expect that the second ureadahead-other process must exit with status 4 since there is no pack file. /var/log/upstart/ureadahead-other.log: ureadahead:/var/lib/ureadahead/home.pack: No such file or directory ureadahead:/var/lib/ureadahead/srv.pack: No such file or directory The bug also appears if there are pack and home.pack files but no srv.pack. Init does not hold log file if there pack files for all mounted filesystems. Perhaps the easiest way is to try mainline kernel that does not support file tracing required for ureadahead (to avoid creation of pack files during debug). I am in doubt if someone can easily reproduce this bug although I see it each boot under certain conditions. The bug appears for 3 filesystems in /etc/fstab (/ /home /srv in my case). I never seen it when just / and /home were mounted. In my case / is ext4, the others are ext3. The last time the bug disappeared after I removed /srv/mnt directory from / filesystem (when /srv was not mounted). Now even srv.pack is not required, just pack and home.pack is enough. But the first boot when there were no pack files finished with busy /. I have tried another partition instead of regularly mounted /srv. There was no bug if that partition was mounted to /mnt instead of /srv. The bug likes 'acl' in the mount options. I do not know why mysterious fork happens during second call of ureadadead-other, I can not reproduce it lunching ureadahead from command line under strace. [Bug 1173952] Re: Suspend and hibhernate not working in 13.04
Yes, „Unloading kernel module alx...Done“ in pm-suspend.log. I use cable connection (driver=sky2) and even see there how it stops twinkle when I try to suspend and everything freezes, until I push something to start it again as if it was in sleep. [Bug 1073433] Re: Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10
Paul, In Quantal 12.10 it is the bug lp: #1124803 NetworkManager doesn't respond to SIGTERM in daemon mode. And that patch fixes the issue for network-manager 0.9.6 (however there are no .deb packages). In 13.04 Raring, network-manager maintainers in Ubuntu missed that upstream dropped distro-specific defines, so network-manager-0.9.8 packages is affected by the bug lp: #1169614 dhclient is not stopped during shutdown.
