[Bug 297898] [NEW] dmz mouse theme incomplete (ibex)

2008-11-13 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dmz-cursor-theme

My dmz mouse cursor theme only has 3 cursors (normal, busy, and
crosshair), the others are all oxygen, probably because it's the
default. PLEASE, bring back dmz. oxygen is horrible.

[Bug 297955] [NEW] crystal icon theme in system settings doesn't work

2008-11-13 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-icons-crystal

If I apply the Crystal SVG icon theme from system settings, it simply
doesn't work. the Icons don't show up on plasma, nor in konqueror or
dolphin. I'm stuck with the ugly ozone theme. I've tried re-installing
the relevant packages, I get nothing.

[Bug 297420] [NEW] Stop logging phy transmission errors to stdout

2008-11-12 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: b43-fwcutter

b43 and other related drivers constantly log errors to stdout, like
this:

[25721.355827] b43-phy0 ERROR: PHY transmission error

The messages are incredibly annoying when using tty1-6, as they disrupt
anything you're doing on the screen.

These messages aren't particularly meaningful, and would be much more
useful if sent to a log file instead of stdout. They already are stored
in the system log anyway, I think (dmesg shows them).

Re: [Bug 200287] Re: usb stick doesn't mount

2008-08-29 Thread naught101
I have no such line in my /etc/fstab, and I still get the bug.

Vassili Geronimos wrote:
This bug seems to be due to the installer creating an entry in

 /dev/sdb1 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

After inserting an SD card, Gnome pops up an error window that says
Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume 'foo'. dmesg
contains the following, like the earlier reports:

 [ 1425.246342] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdb] 16007168 512-byte hardware sectors (8196 MB)

[ 1426.171011] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

Deleting the entry for the non-existent CD-ROM drive from /etc/fstab and
reinserting the SD card results in the card automatically mounting as it
 should with no errors.

Since this bug is caused by the install process somewhere, this bug
should probably be reassigned away from hal (but I'm not sure which
 package should be added instead.)

[Bug 90097] Re: USB memory stick light stays on after safely remove (KDE)

2008-08-11 Thread naught101
While this so far hasn't been a data-loss issue, It may become one,
since it doesn't only apply to USB flash drives, but also USB powered
laptop harddrive enclosures.

When unmounting my specific hard drive (WesternDigital Elements 250GB),
as well as the light remaining on, the HDD platters continue to spin
indefinitely. My only option is to unplug it while it's spinning. I'm
sure this isn't good for the drive.

On the other hand, I have the same issue in windows with particular
drive (disks continue spinning after being safely removed). It might
just be a badly designed drive (lsusb, below, says it's self-powered,
which is wrong), and in that case, powering it down would probably have
the same effect as simply unplugging it.

After my last report, I removed all packages associated with
broadcom4306 and then re-installed from source following the
instructions at http://www.linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43
Since then my wireless has been working better than any time since I

still only getting 1mb/s.

The driver is automatically choosing b43 and not b43-legacy.

[Bug 222122] Re: Theme looks horrible in Kubuntu Hardy

2008-05-09 Thread naught101
Agree. It looks especially horrible with tabmixplus installed - the tabs
on the top row overlap the tabs on the bottom row.

Radio buttons and check boxes don't show while active (highlighted, or
whatever), and only re-appear when the highlight is moves to another
object or link.

Text select areas allow you to select an item, and it looks fine, but
when the highlight is moved to another object or link, the selected item
loses it's colour and goes back to normal, so you can't tell if you've
got anything selected..

I tried Giorgio's fix in kde3 (in ~/.kde/share/config/gtkrc-2.0):
include /usr/share/themes/Clearlooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
style user-font
{ font_name=DejaVu Sans 8  }
widget_class * style user-font
gtk-theme-name=Clearlooks
gtk-font-name=DejaVu Sans 8

But it didn't fix the tabs issue (toolbars look nice though!)

When using tab mix plus, it's possible to have two rows of tabs. then
you really see what the problem looks like (see attachment)

[Bug 211596] [NEW] FAT partition on usb hdd won't mount

2008-04-03 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

I have a usb hdd, with the partitions:
sdb: sdb1 sdb5 sdb6 sdb2

sdb5 is an ext3 parition called blackie-linux
sdb6 is a FAT partion, with the name WINDOWS
sdb2 is a bpootable FAT partition, called boot

when I plug it in to Kubuntu hardy, sdb5 and sdb6 both mount correctly, but
sdb2 doesn't mount, with this error message:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb2,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

sdb2 correctly mounts on my girfriend's gutsy install, as it did when I
had gutsy. It's not hugely problematic - there's nothing on there that I
need, but it's annoying.

dmesg shows:

[Bug 180932] Re: [hardy regression] No scanner support (Kooka)

2008-03-25 Thread naught101
Matthais: yeah, I also had to add scanner to my users groups, however,
udev creates the scanner device with the owner:group root:root, when it
should have been root:scanner.

The solution is to add your user to the scanner group, then find what
bus your USB scanner is on with lsusb (you get a number like 002:004),
then

sudo chown root:scanner /dev/bus/usb/002/004 (or what ever the numbers
are)

I have to do this every time I plug in the scanner, or turn on the
computer.

2008-03-25 Thread naught101
A better way to do it is to add scanner to your user's groups (in teh
user control panel, giver scanner permissions), however, udev creates
the scanner device with the owner:group root:root, when it should have
been root:scanner.

The solution is to add your user to the scanner group, then find what
bus your USB scanner is on with lsusb (you get a number like 002:004),

[Bug 200287] Re: usb stick doesn't mount

2008-03-24 Thread naught101
I think I'm having a similar problem. Sometimes devices mount, sometimes
they don't. Udev seems to create the device files correctly and with the
right permissions. Gparted picks up the partitions fine fine, and my
girlfriend's computer with gutsy auto mounts them all correctly (2 FAT
partitions, one EXT3).

all I did was install from alpha6, then run the FWcutter script at
/usr/share/b43-fwcutter/install_bcm43xx_firmware.sh

as far as I can tell, I SHOULD be using b43legacy, right? should all the
cards in this bug run under b43legacy?

[Bug 182716] Re: bcm4306, bcm4309, bcm4311, bcm4312 don't work with b43 / ssb

2008-03-23 Thread naught101
I can successfully connect to my home network with wlassistant, but the
automatic dchp connection doesn't work, and I have to run sudo
dhclient after connecting. But it still seems to be dropping out
regularly (ever few minutes), and generally having trouble connecting to
websites, even though I'm right next to the router.

I'm going to try upgrading to the debian unstable version of
networkmanager (0.6.2 0.6.5)

/me goes back to wired connection to post

[Bug 204497] [NEW] white screen of death after hibernate in hardy

2008-03-20 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Every time I hibernate, I start the computer, and end up with a white
screen of death - no mouse, no text cursor, no hard drive activity,
nothing. I can't kill X with alt+ctrl+backspace, and I can't switch to a
terminal with alt+ctrl+f(1-6). I have to reboot. A few kernels ago, this
seemed to be happening about 50% of the time, now it happens every time.
I've tried deleting xorg.conf, no difference (xorg previously specified
intel driver).

I thought it might be similar to this bug, but there's no cursor:

[Bug 40125] Re: Network cards not detected when resuming from suspend / hibernate

2008-03-15 Thread naught101
I appear to be having this problem in Kubuntu Hardy. I don't know if I
had it in gutsy, because my hibernation didn't work.

Neither my ethernet nor my wireless come back up in knetworkmanager. I
can start my ethernet with sudo dhclient (pasted below), but
knetworkmanager still doesn't recognise it.

correctly re-creates it and works with any JRE.

[Bug 199660] [NEW] CD-image naming scheme

2008-03-07 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

All the cd images are named the same, regardless of product, and
regardless of release. For example currently, kubuntu releases are all
labelled hardy-desktop-i386 etc, with no distinction between kubunt
and ubuntu, nor minor releases. The only thing that changes is the major
release (gutsy, hardy, etc.), the CD type (live/alternate/server), and
the build type (i386, generic, amd64, etc).

Please use a more descriptive CD image naming scheme. Perhaps something like:
[Distro]-[Major release]-[Minor release]-[CD type]-[Build type].iso

This would result in much more useful filenames, such as:
kubuntu-hardy-daily080307-desktop-i386.iso, or
xubuntu-hardy-alpha6-alternate-amd64.iso

(sorry about the package chosen for this wishlist item, I couldn't find
anything more suitable)

[Bug 199716] [NEW] Implement XDG Base Directory Specification for all *buntu specific software

2008-03-07 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

My BCM4306 rev 3 is not working with either bcm43xx (including
unblacklisting), or bcm (using jockey-kde, which isn't installed by
default, oddly). I can't install b43-legacy from source (seems like it
should work from the site, I get a string of errors so big when I try to
make it that I can't see the first error...

It would be good if b43-legacy was provided as a package.

Ok, wireless light comes on, and networks are detected, but I haven't
been able to connect yet,

1. knetworkmanager doesn't recognise the device (vendor and chipset are both
unknown)
2. can turn wireless OFF with software, but not on. Can turn on with fn+f2.
3. can not in any way turn wireless back on after hibernate.

perhaps this is a separate bug, I might try upgrading to the 011 driver
if I can

[Bug 199034] Re: X server will not start (agpgart)

2008-03-06 Thread naught101
I tried with intel specified in the drivers section of xorg, not luck.
I also tried with vesa, which failed too. I tried with i810, which I
used to used in feisty, and I actually got the basic Xorg black-and-
white pattern with the black cross for a mouse, but then that died too.
I'm going to assign this to Xorg-xserver

[Bug 199034] [NEW] X server will not start (agpgart)

2008-03-05 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

After updating at about 3am GMT on the 6th of march (~two days worth of
updates), I am not able to start X. Dmesg is attached. I'll attach Xorg.log too

after this restart, kubuntu also wouldn't mount /etc/home with the UUID
given in fstab, I changed it to /dev/sda3 and it works fine. I am also
getting /dev/null permission denied errors, which are fixed after making
it world readable/writable. I have no idea whether these things could be
related.

[Bug 197542] Re: [hardy] dell d410 Volume keys not working

2008-03-04 Thread naught101
sorry, Perhaps I didn't explain very well. Xev reports the keycodes
correctly, so it is working, but the symbols aren't set. I'm sure if I
used xmodmap I could get them working, but it should work by default.
Here are the outputs from Xev:

  Volume down press:

state 0x0, keycode 174 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

  Volume down release:
KeyRelease event, serial 31, synthetic NO, window 0x321,

  Mute press:
KeyPress event, serial 31, synthetic NO, window 0x321,
root 0x57, subw 0x322, time 2734456, (46,41), root:(48,57),

For reference, the Fn+pgup/pgdn volume keys report the same keycode as these
volume keys, and the Fn+up/down for screen brightness DOES work, but it doesn't
have symbols, and xev doesn't even recognise Fn+down.

[Bug 134680] Re: Sleep and Hibernate issues in Gutsy on Thinkpad x41

2007-12-12 Thread naught101
the fglrx driver has a similar bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22/+bug/121653

This is caused by a move from CONFIG_SLAB=y to CONFIG_SLUB=y in kernel
2.6.22+. I have no idea what this means, but am wondering if it has
anything to do with this bug. Might the intel driver have similar
problems?

I've also thought that my hibernate problem might be caused by having
too little swap space - I have about 1GB Swap, and 1.2GB RAM. I realise
this shouldn't work in theory, however it always worked fine in feisty
in reality. could something have changed in gutsy that would use more
swap space on hibernate?

I have a vague feeling that this problem would disappear if I fresh-

[Bug 134680] Re: Sleep and Hibernate issues in Gutsy on Thinkpad x41

2007-10-21 Thread naught101
have a feeling that this may actually be three bugs:
 - Scott Hilleard's one, which a number of other people, including myself, are
experiencing (Intel)
 - Tom Vetterlein's one, which Plegm is also experiencing (intel)
 - DanM's one, which is on a different video card (nvidia)

Is the video card relevant? I was using the i810 driver in fiesty, and
it was working, I'm now using the intel driver, and it doesn't work, but
neither does the gutsy i810 driver.

[Bug 153480] Wine doesn't run GLX/Direct Rendering (Gutsy, intel video driver)

2007-10-16 Thread naught101
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I get this error when running Sketchup through wine:
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 128 (XFree86-DRI)

I didn't get this in feisty, I was using the i810 driver in feisty, I'm
now using the intel driver, but I get the same error using the gutsy
i810 driver. Glxgears runs fine, Direct rendering is enabled, other 3D
apps work fine, but Wine doesn't like Sketchup, which is a 3D
application, even though it did in feisty, with an older version of wine
(currently running 0.9.47~winehq0~ubuntu~7.10-1, the winehq upstream
version)

[Bug 127101] Re: laptop hangs when switching video mode

2007-10-15 Thread naught101
Me too. I have had a problem where when going on standby, or 2/3 of the way
shutting down the screen goes blank, no response, with a flashing console
cursor in the top left.
After about 1.5-2 minutes, it continues to shut down, with the normal kubuntu
artwork.
Standby doesn't continue, just stays with the flashing cursor forever, and
needs a hard shutdown.

This didn't happen using the i810 driver (I dunno about the standby
thing, I never use standby). Is it possible that this bug is related?

2007-10-15 Thread naught101
nah, you're right, It's probably unrelated. I already have Peter's one
installed, and it fixed the grey blocks issue for me. This issue is
probably something else. I'll post a bug.

cheers

naught101, your bug sounds unrelated. This bug manifests itself as

That does seem to have fixed it. I can now shut down, although there is
a wierd thing where the screen goes black halfway through shutdown, with
just a blinking cursor in the top left. after a while, it continues to
shutdown, with the normal kubuntu artwork. The problem may be unrelated.

I'll stick with intel (as opposed to i810), and post again if something
happens.
