Re: [Bug 1438011] Re: document viewer

2019-07-21 Thread octalman
I regret that I'm presently unable to test.  My install is Ubuntu 14
(though up-to-date).  I've been ill the past two years and not been able
to keep up.  It looks like it will be longer still before I can test or
update.  Best wishes.

[Bug 935584] Re: gnome image viewer (eog) shows only black for certain images

2016-09-09 Thread octalman
This bug just hit me: Ubuntu 14.04 (up-to-date), Thunderbird 45.0, E(G
10.3.2. Other applications using EOG fail also. Issues message saying
signature 0x89 0x50 isn't vald JPEG signature. The filename has .jpg
extension. These pictures (there are four) display correctly on both my
andrioid phones and on my daughter's android phones. She says it won't
open on her Linux laptop, however.

A copy of one of the JPEG files is attached.

This bug is for Libre Office, not Open Office. Sorry, I forgot (been
using OO and LO since 1999). Please change the report to LO. I'm using
Ubuntu 14.04, up to date.

[Bug 1506696] [NEW] Bullets and numbering ignores paragraph formatting

2015-10-15 Thread octalman
Public bug reported:

After years of fighting OO Writer's bullets and numbering, I have
finally discovered at least part of the problem. It appears to consist
of two parts.

1. There is no "No, I don't want bullets and numbering" for a selected
paragraph. Both the formatting drop-down/paragraph and the bullent-and-
numbering drop-down should both have this option, explicitly.

More specifically,

2. Bullets and numbering is ultra aggressive. Under some conditions,
even when bullets and numbering is turned off for a paragraph, O-O tries
to implement numbering anyway. Worse, when this happens, not only the
current paragraph is infected, but one or more subsequent paragraphs
will also be affected, and the problem cannot be fixed.

Bullets and numbering energizes itself, even if the paragraph does not
have bullets and numbering enabled, when one or more of the following
occur:

.. A paragraph begins with a capital letter immediately followed by a
period
.. A paragraph begins with certain capital letters (C, but apparently
others as well)
.. The first character of the paragraph is a numeral followed by a period

This issue with respect to the second item above can be overcome by
enclosing the offending letter and some following text in double quotes
(U S style, "). I don't know whether this works for numerals, however,
or if only the first letter is so enclosed.

Under these circumstances, it is impossible to disable bullets and
numbering.

When this aggressive behaviour occurs, it also causes indentation
specifications to be ignored and attempts to correct formatting causes
indentation specifications to be altered or eliminated.

By bullets and numbering enabling, I mean that "include this paragraph"
and/or "start numbering" is checked.

I am using Open Office 4.2 in the current release of Ubuntu 14.04,
presumably up to date, on an Pavilion laptop with AMD A8 processor.

[Bug 1438011] [NEW] document viewer

2015-03-29 Thread octalman
Public bug reported:

Evince has some usability issues with locked files:

1. When a locked PDF is saved, it cannot be saved to iself, as
LibreOffice does for ordinary files. This is an issue with IRS and
State of Texas filing documents. They can be edited after having been
saved, but must be manually saved to a different file and the original
file manually deleted -- a great opportunity for screwups. I suppose
that's reasonable, but being a mere mortal, I find that I often must
edit these things, sometimes several times, before finally printing them
for submission. Keeping up with the saved versions is a real hassle.

2. Besides being a hassle, it's a big time-waster saving an edited
locked government form. A semi-automagical renaming mechanism would be
a great help.

3. Edited PDF's are saved with the same timestamp as the source file.
This makes it more difficult to distinguish between saved versions.
It's also misleading, with potential legal repercussions for the user.
There's no way to distinguish as to when the file was actually created
in its new persona.

[Bug 1417155] Re: LibreOffice ignores HP 8600 printer settings

2015-03-29 Thread octalman
This is still an issue with LibreOffice. I have to save my files as
PDF's to be able to print them double-sided. Also, LibreOffice's print
menu popup should be dumped and LO use the same one that Firefox and
Document viewer (Evince) use.

Similar problems were reported as:

[Bug 1390994] Re: Lost ability to print duplex

This bug no longer appears in my bug list. I found this by scanning
through my e-mail.

The situation has worsened such that LibreOffice Writer now won't print
duplex at all.

Thunderbird just now printed an e-mail message duplex, so the problem
appears to be only with LibreOffice, as reported.

I will run apport, as Mr. Penalver has requested.

When I first reported these problems, I had no idea which package was
causing the problem. Mostly, it seldom is. Although I participated in
early development testing of Mozilla and the Linux kernel, I have not
done so with other applications and am now seriously out of touch with
the fine details.

So far, I have only observed this problem when using LibreOffice. I

[Bug 1417155] [NEW] LibreOffice ignores printer settings

2015-02-02 Thread octalman
Public bug reported:

LibreOffice won't print double-sided on my HP 8600 printer. This used
to work correctly with Ubuntu 14.04. I reported problems with this last
Fall, but the problem has gotten worse instead of better. My original
report no longer shows up in my bug list. The problem is NOT with the
printer. The duplexer works correctly in local mode.

Although I specify long edge double-sided, auto tray select, I get:

Letter size (wrong tray, the default tray -- the document is formatted
legal-size)
 Single sided (all pages)
Second page is printed upside-down (as though I had specified tumble-head,
that is, short-edge double sided)
A blank fourth (and sometimes fourh and fifth) page is printed at the end
of the document, even though the document is only three pages long. The source
file contains only three pages - no dummy extra page like OO used to do.

On some print runs I have specified multiple copies, collated. Some are
specified to be printed in reverse order, but neither seems to make any
difference (might account for the fifth page -- have to check).

I have checked all the settings in the drop-down file tab and each of the
printer specification popups. They are set correctly.

Until recently, PDFs were printed correctly, but now neither *.odt nor
*.pdf files are printed correctly.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04, fully up-to-date. The computer is an HP dv6 with AMD
A8 64-bit processor.

[Bug 1417163] [NEW] LibreOffice Calc won't keep header on display

2015-02-02 Thread octalman
Public bug reported:

Although I can specify headers to repeat on printed reports, there is no
option (that I can find) that will cause headers to be retained on-
screen when scrolling through the list of rows. This is a very annoying
usability issue that has existed from the earliest StarOffice release
which I have used (1999).

VisiCalc, SuperCalc, QuattroPro and several other spreadsheet programs
(even Excel), all could retain table headers on-screen. This is very
useful when entering or reviewing data with more than a page's worth of
lines.

Please fix this. It's been broken for far, far too long.

[Bug 1400214] Re: LibreOffice no longer converts text to table correctly

2015-01-05 Thread octalman
There is a fix for this problem, but the fix is barely better than the
original. It now converts successive lines of the source into separate
tables! NOT what is desired.

Convert text to table should convert successive lines of the source into
successive rows in the destination table - a single table for the entire
source. Each field of the source lines should go into a column (cell)
of the destination table.

This used to work correctly.

One source block -- one destination table is what is wanted, not a mass
of mini-tables inside an overall table. What a mess.

[Bug 1400214] [NEW] LibreOffice no longer converts text to table correctly

2014-12-07 Thread octalman
Public bug reported:

Text-to-table conversion converts into a single line/row of cells. This
isn't correct. It should honor line breaks (or some arbitrary
separator) and place succeeding column cells in a new row.

There used to be an option in the conversion which allowed the user to
specify arbitrary line/row break character(s), but there isn't any
linebreak option in the present implementation.

Text-to-table conversion worked correctly under 12.04, which I haven't
used for several months now, having upgraded to 14.04.

2014-12-05 Thread octalman
I ran sudo apport-collect 1399135 and got the message which follows.
There also was a message saying I needed to restart the browser, which I
haven't because I have work to do and need to get on with it. I just
want this stuff to work -- it used to work and well (for many years),
now it's messed up. This isn't the only screwup, either -- convert text

[Bug 1399135] [NEW] LibreOffice Writer no longer splits a table cell vertically

2014-12-04 Thread octalman
Public bug reported:

This used to work correctly. When I tried recently to split a
LibreOffice Writer table cell into two or more horizontally aligned sub-
cell columns (vertical split), the split was made horizontally,
resulting in additional lines within the cell instead of additional
columns within the cell, as intended.

When horizontal split is chosen, the same effect results. That is, both
cell split options produce identical results.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04, with all updates current (to within a week).
I first discovered this problem about a month or two ago.

I just now tested this bug under Ubuntu 14.04. It's still a problem.
Shutdown didn't hang this time, but I had to remove the battery and
reinstall it to restart -- power button on keyboard goes inactive when
ethernet port is disconnected during shutdown.

Re: [Bug 1390994] Re: Lost ability to print duplex

2014-11-25 Thread octalman
I think I have found what causes this problem.

I have two printers attached, the HP 8600 with a duplexer, and an HP
C7180.

Everything works as it should so long as I use only the 8600. However,
when I use the C7180, then use the 8600 again, the printer controls have
forgotten that the 8600 was configured to print duplex. The main
configuration menu (the File popup/pulldown on the topmost display
line) still shows it to be configured to print duplex as default, but
when a print job starts, the configuration is changed to single-sided,
even though it was duplex the previous time it was used. So long as I
remember to check the configuration tab on the print job and change it
to duplex, all is well. Mostly just a nuisance, but still a nuisance.

Change of subject (sort of): could you point me to someone to discuss
the printer controls' configurations/layouts. I have a couple of
suggestions.

Can you also attach the file(s) which you tried to print? Please do this

Duplexing no longer works (again)

I just printed a job from Libre Office for which the duplex option was
ignored. Both the File menu and the libre office print display show
duplexing to be enabled and selected, but the printer produces two
single-sided sheets.

[Bug 1390994] Re: Lost ability to print duplex

2014-11-20 Thread octalman
When I generate a multi-page PDF from wikipedia, it prints double-sided.
That's why I reported earlier that duplexing was fixed. but, not with
Libre Office.

I just now saved the *.odt libre office job I reported a bit ago as a
PDF and printed it. It prints single-sided, just like the *.odt. Looks
like something has gone wrong in libre office.

[Bug 1390994] Re: Lost ability to print duplex

2014-11-20 Thread octalman
When a multi-page document is printed directly from a wikipedia article
(not PDF) or any other web page, it prints double-sided if I remember to
to check the printer options and change to duplex. Not a terribly
convenient configuration -- but how many options do you want to show on
a single page?

Re: [Bug 1390994] Re: Lost ability to print duplex

2014-11-12 Thread octalman
As I stated in my report, my HP 8600 Printer has a duplexer unit.
Requests for double-sided printing (from Ubuntu) worked properly until a
recent Ubuntu upgrade.

The duplexer works properly in local manual mode, just as it did before.

The problem I'm reporting is that it appears that something in Ubuntu
has changed that now causes the double-sided option to be disregarded.
Print jobs run normally, but disregard requests for two-sided printing;
pages print sindge-sided only.

The print interface menu display has been changed (and not necessarily
for the better). The GUI display shows double-sided printing to be
enabled with long-edge option, as its predecessor did before, but
double-sided printing never occurs, though I have requested numerous
such jobs.

At the time I write this, there are only two lines in the cups error
log, each one stating:

Unknown directive BrowseAddress on line 26 of /etc/cups/cups.conf

less reports that there is no such file as /etc/cups/cups.conf (and,
yes, I used sudo)

Does your printer have a duplex unit or are you using some kind of

Can your follow the instructions of the sections CUPS error_log,
Capturing print job data, and Getting the data which would go to the
 printer on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems. Can you
also attach the file(s) which you tried to print? Please do this for all
situations with problems (LibreOffice, evince, ...).

Do not pack the obtained file together and do not compress them. Please
attach them one by one. This will make it easier for the readers

 of this

[Bug 1390994] [NEW] Lost ability to print duplex

2014-11-09 Thread octalman
Public bug reported:

A recent update (about a week or two ago) has resulted in my HP 8600
printer no longer printing double-sided. All the configuration
information appears to be unchanged, but pages are not printed double-
sided, when requested. The duplexer works properly in local mode.

My configuration is: Ubuntu 14.04 (up-to-date), HP Pavilion dv6 with
AMD quad-core processor. I have been running Ubuntu on this machine for
about 27 months. I successfully upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04 last
summer. The 8600 printer has been in use for about two years.

[Bug 1390997] [NEW] Firefox crashes

2014-11-09 Thread octalman
Public bug reported:

This report may be stale news, as I haven't been able to take the time
for several weeks to file a report.

After upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 a couple of months ago, I found that
Firefox will crash the system so hard that power has to be removed to
restart. This happened several times. It appeared to be due to a
memory leak, as it only happens after prolonged heavy use -- over a week
or more. The system gradually became more and more sluggish and the
problem could only be resolved by re-booting. I have not experienced
this problem recently, but also haven't been using this computer nearly
as much as previously.

[Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-06-02 Thread octalman
Re: Thunderbird -- serious issue

The bogus directory is Trash[Gmail]Drafts. When the main mail
display is dismissed, Thunderbird continues to attempt to save a draft
of any new message. It is then no longer possible to edit the message
being prepared and it is no longer possible to access the main mail
displays, though it is possible to prepare another new message.

Autoclick -- issue appears to be resolved.

Keyboard response -- now better, but overall system performance has
been seriously downgraded by the most recent updates.

Wild cursor -- this has been a serious productivity issue for six years.
It needs attention on a high priority basis.

[Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-05-29 Thread octalman
Update today to 12.04 restores URL bar copy/paste.

However, when the restart button on the update page is clicked, the
computer does not complete the restart procedure, but hangs with a dark
green screen. It can only be restarted by removing power and the
battery. Manual retry works with no further problems (yet).

Upon completing the update, a pane displays with the message failed to
download extra data files flashplugin-installer. This happened with
the previous one or two updates also.

Very limited testing seems to indicate better keyboard response.

[Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-05-29 Thread octalman
The failed to download extra data files message doesn't seem to
accomplish anything. It just keeps repeating, even though I click the
run this action button and authenticate. This was the case with
previous updates too.

THUNDERBIRD problem

About two or three weeks ago (perhaps a bit longer), Thunderbird started
issuing notices that it could not save to the drafts file. About the
same time it started creating a new subdirectory,
Drafts[Gmail]Trash (or Trash[Gmail]Drafts, I forget which and
have lost my notes). Although I can delete the (empty) directory, it
reappears and the message persists.

Keyboard response is definitely better. Autoclick timeout seems more
reasonable, but only with limited testing.

[Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-05-25 Thread octalman
The two most recent updates to 12.04 have caused even more serious
productivity problems than ever.

Autoclick timeout has decreased to near zero. I haven't had the time to
try to discover how to adjust this, if it's even possible to adjust.

It's ridiculously easy to accidentally some magic key combination,
performing an undesired, and almost certainly undesirable, action.

The latest update removed ability to copy/paste URL addresses from the
address bar in Firefox. Ability to do so has been very useful to me in
the past and I'm extremely annoyed that it is no longer available.

[Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-03-29 Thread octalman
The latest update (March 26 or 27) has introduced new issues having to do with
mouseover-autoclick and touchpad sensitivity.
No other changes have been made to the system other than the updates.

Timeout for autoclick is so short that just moving the cursor usually
results in moving some piece of text (or a cell in a spreadsheet).
Random links are autoclicked almost instantly.

Touchpad hypersensitivity has always been an issue (for me) with Ubuntu
releases 8.04, 10.04 and 10.04. Tuning doesn't seem to make much
difference. No other changes have been made to the system other than
the updates. I have experienced this with this HP dv6 (purchased July,
2012) and a Dell Inspiron 1501, though the problem is worse with the
HP..

Painting text for cut/copy-paste is very much problematical. It often
takes five or six (or more) tries to paint (and keep painted) a block of
text so that it can be cut or copied.

These are all serious productivity killers besides being extremely
annoying.

[Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-03-25 Thread octalman
Following the most recent update (about March 22-24, 2014):

Issues 1 and 9 remain unresolved.

13. A new issue has appeared, possibly related to No. 11 (probable
memory leak): after the system runs for a prolonged period, a message
appears with increasing frequency, stating that a script has stopped
running. System usability gradually, then rapidly, decays to the point
of the system being unusable. Re-boot is required. The issue appears
to be related to Firefox, but Firefox may or may not be the true cause.
A more probable culprit seems to be Unity.

Issue No. 12 has not reared its head, but there has been only limited
testing.

2014-03-12 Thread octalman
Issue No. 10 has been resolved, but a new issue has appeared and an old
one (2) reappeared:

11. There appears to be a slow memory leak that manifests itself with
Firefox (though it may be elsewhere). When the system is left powered
up for an extended period (over a week, as observed in this case), one
or more of the windows become non-responsive.

12. System will not restart when shut down -- bootstrap fails with a
green screen (GSOD?). Power (the battery) must be removed to be able to
shut down and restart. This is similar to, but different in some
details, from previous shutdown/restart issues which appeared in
December, 2013. Formerly issue (2).

Issues 1 and 9 remain unresolved.

[Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-02-21 Thread octalman
With update of Feb 17-22, 2014:

All issues have now been resolved, except:

  1. Firefox and Thunderbird can't find a wireless connection, even though one
has been successfully established.. Requests to authenticate appear
repeatedly, from time to time, even though system status indicates that the
wireless connection has been established and is active. This problem first
appeared about the first week of December, 2013 and continues to this time.
  9. Firefox does not automagically restore previous session.
10. Some Firefox windows are restored in the smaller size of another,
unrelated resized window.

2. Bootstrap failure returns
3. Tab history is garbled for some tabs (not all)
4. Right-click woks with some windows, but not all (this was true as of
previous update too).

2014-02-08 Thread octalman
Further testing reveals that right-click works in some Firefox windows,
but not others, similar to the problem with gestures (work in some
windows, not others).

When it does work, tab history appears to be intact. Back and forward
arrow movement through tab history works OK and history appears to be
intact.

[Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-02-07 Thread octalman
Fixed with seventeen updates February 6:

2. Boosstrap fails
5. Windows lose content (apparently due to memory leak) -- passed 16 hour
stress test
6. Screen flashing while updating LibreOffice display (limited testing)
8. Unity magically appearing/disappearing scrollbar reverted to originally
configured old-school scrollbar.
10. Resized windows retain size on restart (yay!)

Still outsanding:

1. Firefox and Thunderbird can't access established wireless connection.
4. Right click doesn't work with Firefox
7. Gesture-scrolling only works with some Firefox windows/tabs (didn't work at
all before)
9. firefox does not automagically restore windows on restart.

Can't determine:

3. Firefox loses tab history -- can't tell because right click doesn't
work (4 above)

[Bug 1272448] [NEW] December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-01-24 Thread octalman
Public bug reported:

December 2013 and January 2014 updates have caused numerous usability
problems. Some disappear, then reappear. All the following are
current.

1. Firefox and Thunderbird no longer find internet connection when
connected wirelessly. System reports wireless connection is established
and working, but neither FF nor TB cab find it. Wired connection works
OK. This problem first appeared in early December and has continued to
date (January 24, 2014).

2. Booting HP Pavilion dv6 laptop fails when external power is
connected. Boots OK on battery alone. Bug reported. Problem appeared
after January 1, 2014.

3. Firefox loses tab history -- it's still there, but inaccessable
unless I reboot. Long-standing issue.

4. Right-click no longer works in Firefox. Can't copy or cut-and-
paste.

5. After running for more than a few hours, Firefox window frames
become transparent and Firefox no longer works.

6. When using LibreOffice, screen updates cause brief, but very
annoying, display flashing or blanking. Blanking is sometimes extended
up to ten seconds. (AMD A-8 quad-core processor with 6 GB main memory!).
Very alarming.

7. Lost ability to scroll, etc. using gestures shortly after January
1, 2014.

8. Unity magically appearing/disappearing scroll tabs replaced Gnome's
hard scrollbars. That's not nice. I don't like them.

9. Firefox never, ever restores automagically (though it always did in
10.04 LTS and does on Linux Mint). This issue has been outstanding for
two years, or more. No biggie, but it's annoying and very
unprofessional. Two bugs reported on this vs. Oneric! C'mon, people.
Surely you can do better than that.

This system is single-boot Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Gnome 3/Unity on an ext4
filesystem, installed about August 6, 2012 and kept up to date.

What happened to the concept that 12.04 was to be a stable release?
This is the most unstable *n*x OS release I have ever used since 1999
(SuSE 5 through 8, Ubuntu 8.04, 10.04, Mint 13 and 14). This nonsense
makes Microsoft Windows almost seem desirable. I also use Linux Mint 14
on other boxes, an HP Pavilion dv7 and a Dell Optiplex GX620. None of
these issues affect Mint 14, although it is based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
(Mint 14 has its own issues, but none affect usability like these do).
Unity sucks stumpwater.

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

And, what's more:

10. Resized windows no longer retain their size, but revert to a
default size. Sometimes I want a smaller sized window and I expect it
to stay that size.

And,

11. Thunderbird loses messages and/or message contents. The message
appears in the summary pane, but when I click on it to read the message,
the content is from a previously read message. This is a new problem,
just experienced today (January 24). I can read the messages on my
Android 'phone, but not on the computer using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

[Bug 70539] Re: Erratic touch pad cursor movement

2013-07-02 Thread octalman
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 12124 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/12124

This is not a duplicate of #12124. Also, it is not a duplicate of 8471,
10186, 12720, 12723 or 13912.

Those refer to problems at startup or initialization. This bug persists
throughout a session.

It can be avoided by ensuring one's hand(s) are always lifted well above
the touchpad, but that's much easier in theory than in practice. The
problem is not materially eased by setting the option turn touchpad off
while typing; at least so far as I have been able to tell, this option
has no effect at all.

This has been a serious problem for me since June, 2008 (Ubuntu 8.04)
through the present (Ubuntu 12.04 and also Linux Mint Mate 14). The
differences between these distributions and the three computers on which
I have used them are merely in magnitude, though it has been extremely
annoying and time-consuming (for correcting problems) on all four of my
installs.

Dell Inspiron 1500 (Ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04)
HP Pavilion dv6 (Ubuntu 12.04)
HP Pavilion dv7 (Linux Mint Mate 14)

I have seen yelo3's suggestions for editing xorg.conf (bug 12124 --
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-driver-
synaptics/+bug/12124. Also yelo3's postings October 8, 2007; November
17, 2009 and September 14, 2010. Although this suggestion may well ease
or even solve the problem, I hesitate to implement it on my production
machines -- lost operational time could be a serious problem.

The severity for this bug needs to be elevated sharply because it is
such a time waster and has persisted so long.
