[Bug 185878] Re: GRUB installation fails if installing to certain non-ext3 filesystems

2018-09-05 Thread peter b
- I have on sda winXP AND on sdb WIN10 and 16.04
- 18.04 sits/installed on sdf

- did you try/change in BIOS your sdd to be the FIRST BOOT DEVICE/HDD?

- my system/described above boots/works flawlessly - grub sees and boots
all 4 OS's.

- pls take a look at

[Bug 1574667] Re: Mouse pointer occasionally jumps to the bottom-left corner

2017-02-09 Thread Peter B.
The previously posted Juan workaround also worked for me too on the Dell
XPS 15 running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Thank you all. :-)

Patch system first, then do the following fixes posted by Juan and
others (see previous posts).

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-libinput
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

vim /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-libinput.conf

InputClass #Inside the sections for pointer and touchpad
Option "NaturalScrolling" "true" #note I used this
Option "AccelSpeed" "-0.5"#note I tried this - made mouse too slow
- commented it.

Reboot.

[Bug 1574667] Re: Mouse pointer occasionally jumps to the bottom-left corner

2016-12-30 Thread Peter B.
PS: I realized I needed to point out corrections to my previous post
about my Dell XPS 15 which is running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, as follows:

(1) touchpad mouse pointer randomly jumps to the bottom left corner,
which frustratingly can result in the trash application opening up since
one might be trying to click an application, and at least having to move
the mouse pointer back to where you need it. (this is not related to
touchscreen. this is touchpad issue)

(2) text typing ... too often the position jumps backwards several
characters so you wind up typing in the middle of your sentence, and
sometimes jumps elsewhere in the text field. Just typing this, it
jumped once or twice as I said.

[Bug 1574667] Re: Mouse pointer occasionally jumps to the bottom-left corner

2016-12-30 Thread Peter B.
I have been experiencing the identical problem on my new Dell XPS 15
touchscreen laptop running Ubuntu 16.04 fully patched. Two problems
actually:

(1) touchpad mouse pointer randomly jumps to the bottom left corner,
which frustratingly can result in the trash application opening up, and
at least having to reset the mouse pinter back to where you need it.

(2) mouse pointer too often also jumps backwards several characters so
you wind up typing in the middle of your sentence.

Both of the above problems become frustrating enough that you want to
throw the laptop across the room, LOL. It happened to me like 3-4 times
just typing this. Windows is also on this computer and has no such
issues.

Ubuntu, this has really got to be fixed.

[Bug 1472055] Re: /etc/network/interfaces up, post-up commands not run at network startup

2015-11-18 Thread Peter B
Hi David,
I could not reliably make things work for production. I had tried to put
ifup/ifdown in my rc.local script and I tried tweaking the upstart scripts...
but I couldn't get anything to bring up all the interfaces reliably.

Noone in the forms bothered to help on this either...

Upstart is a complete disaster... I ended up abandoning 14.04
altogether, rolled back to a 10.04 snapshot and then forced an upgrade
to 12.04 LTS. 12.04 is temperamental at times and also doesn't always
bring up the interfaces right, but I can script around it and make sure
things are up.

I don't understand how this is not a bigger issue for Ubuntu... We
can't be the only ones with more complex network configs...

-Cheers, Peter.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2014-03-16 Thread Peter B.
Joseph/Christopher,

I see Saucy went to Triage. Please let me know if there will be any
further attempts at a kernel (or other) fix to Saucy I can try while I
have Saucy installed now (per post 58) to my local disk partition
wherebye I can install your kernel .deb packages.

Otherwise, if no further attempts to fix Saucy for Dell XPS 18
touchscreen, I will just install Trusty 14.04 on my local disk, and be
done with it. :) Isn't 14.04 a LTS release anyway, while 13.x is not -
and is going away later this year anyhow? That way too, I can bug you
guys if you break 14.04 ;)

Thank you.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2014-03-14 Thread Peter B.
Joseph,

I was able to (on my Dell XPS 18 touch) use Windows 8.1 to reduce/shrink
the WIndows OS partition, and give me space to install Ubuntu Saucy
13.10 on the local disk so that I could add the .deb upstream updated
kernel and reboot to it.Here's the kernel it's running (below):

@ubuntusaucy:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntusaucy 3.11.10-03111006-generic #201403120635 SMP Wed Mar 12
10:35:55 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

However, this unfortunetly did NOT allow the Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy version
with this latest upstream kernel to enable touchscreen on the Dell XPS
18. So no go. In fact, while using it, Unity locked up and
rebooted itself several times. I do not think that happened with
Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty which worked great, touchscreen and all.

Re: [Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2014-03-12 Thread Peter B.
Joseph,

I could only try this:

Can you see if this is also fixed in the latest 3.11 upstream kernel,
which can be downloaded from:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11.10.5-saucy/

if I was able to make a persistent bootable USB stick/flash drive with the
latest ISO and that kernel added.

But I've not had good luck with that yet.  If there were a daily download
equivalent ISO I could try with
this latest upstream kernel, I can try it, but it doesn't seem like this kernel
is on the ISO for download ?

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2014-03-07 Thread Peter B.
Hello Joseph. Great to hear back from you. Excellent news! I downloaded
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/
trusty-desktop-amd64.iso 07-Mar-2014 07:52 933M Desktop image for
64-bit PC (AMD64) computers (standard download)
and made a bootable USB stick with Starup Disk Creator, then booted up the Dell
XPS 18 touch with the Ubuntu Trusty Desktop version 14.04, and the following
worked:

Touchscreen allowed me to touch on the Try Ubuntu button on screen per the USB
boot stick.
Ubuntu 14.04 then booted up into Unity correctly with no errors, and the screen
looked great all around, nothing missing.
I was able to touch the top bar to drop down the wireless menu and setup my
wireless and it worked.
Touch the icons on the left side menu bar, and have applications like the
onscreen OB keyboard and Firefox startup.
I was able to use the touchscreen to type on the OB keyboard, as well as use
the OB keyboard with Firefox screens to do a Google search, etc.
Finally I was able to clock the top/left function bar to drop down the menu and
shutdown Ubuntu 14.04.

So, all, in all, I'd say this was very successful on the Dell XPS 18
touchscreen !!! Do you want any other tests performed?

Thank you,
Peter

See post 50.

Addendum: BTW for touch screen, when Ubuntu sits as the login screen
for a user, the MOUSE POINTER FOCUS needs to default to the LOGIN FIELD,
as the touch screen doesn't currently help here, and the screen keyboard
doesn't work here either. I know this is outside the scope of this
trouble ticket, but I hope somebody is looking at this.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-10-31 Thread Peter B.
By any chance has the latest Saucy included Josph's kernel with better
touch support, etc. or is post 48 (where he would create a LiveCD that I
can test with on my XPS 18 touch) still valid?

[Bug 1172670] Re: THinkPad X121e : WLAN disabled after waking from suspend

2013-10-03 Thread Peter B P
Hello Christopher,

thank you for your suggestion! I updated the BIOS to the latest
available version, and the bug with the WLAN getting turned off after
sleep now appears to be solved.

I've restested with several sleep/wake cycles and the bug does not
appear at all anymore.

[Bug 549107] Re: lucid beta 1 fails to mount external USB 3.0 storage

2013-09-16 Thread Peter B P
Christopher,

thank you for the reminder. I have progressed quite a bit beyond Lucid
since I reported the bug, and I don't have the hardware that I used to
test Lucid on anymore.

For what it's worth, I also have a suspicion that the problem in
question was caused by the USB 3.0 adapter card from Western Digital,
and not the operating system, but that is hard to say anything about at
this point.

In any case, thank you for your attention.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-29 Thread Peter B.
Per post41, and the reason for me attempting to make a working LiveCD
with your kernel installed, is because I need to keep the Win8 OS on
the XPS 18 touch, I cannot wipe that to install Ubuntu locally. (In the
very least, not until I know with certainty Ubuntu will support the
touchscreen.) This is why I've been trying to create a bootable USB
flash drive with your kernel, which (per all the work I did and posted
previously) does not seem suitable for a LiveCD boot.

Any news ? (See my post 42) I'd hate to see this die just because I
cannot make those (post 19) kernel packages work with a LiveCD bootable

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-28 Thread Peter B.
My posts 41 and 42... I was able to install your linux-image kernel
packages on an existing physical install of Ubuntu 13.04 (non-touch
screen) so that it boots up ok to your test kernel.Further, I was
able to build a LiveCD written to USB flash drive via uck-gui tool, with
the following results: (A) no customization to Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10
saucey ISO image, it boots fine into Ubuntu and into Unity, while (B)
when adding your linux-image kernel packages as customizations to the
LiveCD, the same do not boot up properly, ending up with the (initramfs
... per posts 41 and 42) error, and that's it.

The long story short of this is I cannot make custom LiveCD with your
linux-image kernel packages, as they wind up booting only to the
(initramfs ...) error on both physical hardware (Dell Optiplex 745/980
non-touchscreen) and same problem on the Dell XPS 18 Touchscreen.
However, as a control measure I built a LiveCD with uck-gui and added no
custom kernel packages, and those booted just fine.So again, when I
add your kernel packages the LiveCD fails. The only thing your kernel
packages booted ok from was a physical install (to local disk), but that
had no touch screen to test.

In other words, if you are able to build a LiveCD ISO with your test
kernel packages on it and get it to boot up, and I could obtain a copy,
I can then test the Dell XPS 18 touch.Otherwise, I am stuck at this
point.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-22 Thread Peter B.
Addendum to post 41.

I grabbed the latest Saucy ISO and made to LiveCD with uck (uck-gui),
the first with your .deb linux-image packages installed, and the second
LiveCD with no customization. In these instances, I used uck as
before, and then dd ( http://www.tuxgarage.com/2011/06/ubuntu-switched-
to-hybrid-disc-images.html ) to write the ISO to USB flash drive for
bootup. The uck-based LiveCD with no customization boots just fine
to Unity. The one with your linux-image packages fails with the message
(initramfs)..

Is there something about those linux-image .deb packages (post 19) that
is not supporting something it needs to ? Anyway, at this point if you
can do a LiveCD that works with your .deb linux-image packages, it would
really help, so I can test this, as I've unfortunately not been able to
do this successfully with your packages.

Thank you.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-21 Thread Peter B.
I'll try the suggestion in post 38, but I suspect this won't correct the
problem attempting to do an uck-gui customization terminal session
install for it (post 28). Also, if the post 38 items don't work,
I've done `dpkg-query -L linux-image*.deb` file listings, and parced the
filenames to file lists, and tarred them up, so I have an alternative
way to install the linux-image files. My only concern will be if your
.deb packages do any scripted work ???

Post 39: Addendum - in other words, I found I was able to install your
linux-image* files on a live (installed and booted from hard disk)
Ubuntu system, while the booted from LiveCD (via USB) and also the uck-
gui customization sessions have been problematic, therefore I'll see
what your post 38 recommendations do, otherwise I can install from tar
files I made.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-21 Thread Peter B.
Joseph, I went so far as to use a fully installed Ubuntu 13.04 hardware
machine - though non-touchscreen based on availability (as opposed to my
Ubuntu 13.04 on vmware player development environment on my XPS 18
touch), for the purpose to do all this all over again, including your
tips/suggestions from 19, 31, 38.While I found I was successful at
installing your linux-image*.deb packages on the hardware machine (and
was also successful to boot to your 3.11 kernel linux-image -
unfortunately not on a touchscreen) and then used uck to build a
bootable LiveCD of Ubuntu 13.04 plus your kernel 3.11 linux-image*.deb
packages, and verified the packages and their files did install, etc.
and no errors. But when I boot up from the LiveCD on the same
machine, I get the same result as post 27

Ubuntu . . . .

  (followed by)

Busybox v1.20.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.20.0-8ubuntu1) ...

initramfs unable to find medium containing live file system.

Keep in mind this is in contrast to when I use uck to build an Ubuntu 13.04
LiveCD without adding your kernel linux-image .deb package customizations, it
boots just fine. So, it doesn't seem like I can make your linux-image work on
a LiveCD to test on my Dell XPS 18 touch. (And I cannot currently wipe it to
do a local hw install of Ubuntu due to other needs.)

At this point, if you can build a working LiveCD that I can try, would
be about all that might help this along. Please advise.

Not sure if this will be a problem as it is yet unresolved, even if we
can ever get Post 19 .deb packages installed on a LiveCD/ISO to test.

2013-08-19 Thread Peter B.
Hi Joseph. I will double check for you, but my suggestion is no, for
the following reason. I re-did the LiveCD with uck and with the Ubuntu
Saucy ISO. uck gets you to a customization terminal, and I verified
what was in /boot before and after attempting install of your .deb
packages, and saw nothing change in /boot. While I can do dpkg-query
-l | grep (your package names) and it looks to be installed, it does not
look to have updated some files.Should I be seeing your kernel
updates in /boot, because I am not seeing that happen.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-19 Thread Peter B.
There was no test kernel to select with grub boot.

Additionally, I booted Ubuntu Saucey (the latest is more stable on the
XPS 18 than earlier), and here is what I see (below). Also by
date/timestamp nothing in /boot/grub was altered.

Before install - `ls -l` in /boot
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1005628 Aug 12 16:41 abi-3.11.0-2-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 163232 Aug 12 16:41 config-3.11.0-2-generic

-rw--- 1 root root 3306589 Aug 12 16:41 System.map-3.11.0-2-generic

After install - `ls -l` in /boot
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1005628 Aug 13 20:56 abi-3.11.0-2-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 163244 Aug 13 20:56 config-3.11.0-2-generic

-rw--- 1 root root 5635024 Aug 13 20:56 vmlinuz-3.11.0-2-generic

And the `dpkg -i *.deb` (also attempted with --force-all afterwards to
no good result either) install said this:

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-19 Thread Peter B.
From what I see, the linux-header-* .deb packages are installing ok,
while it is the linux-image-* .deb packages are not fully installing
right, whether I do this from a booted Ubuntu session, or from an uck-
gui customization terminal session... the former being slighly more
successful than the later, but both issues/results of `dpkg -i *.deb`
are described in posts 28 and 34.

Unless this is resolved, or someone else can provide a working LiveCD
ISO with the updated .deb files installed for testing, this is still at
a standstill.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-17 Thread Peter B.
Follow-up to post 26. I found a bugfix for uck
https://answers.launchpad.net/uck/+question/211908
which fixed the previous issue with uck, and allowed me to successfully create
a LiveCD for Ubuntu 13.04 plus patches and the linux updates from Joseph
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1205494/
and used Startup Disk Creater to successfully write the new LiveCD ISO to USB,
and it booted up.

Bad news - upon boot, after the Ubuntu . screen, it goes to this
message:

Busybox v1.20.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.20.0-8ubuntu1) ...

initramfsunable to find medium containing live file system.

I know the LiveCD ISO file was successfully created, and likewise for
the Startup Disk Creator fully successful writing it to USB stick. So,
at this point, I can only attribute this issue to the new 3.11 kernel
from the http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1205494/ pakages ???

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-17 Thread Peter B.
Addendum to post 28.

I also ran the following tests, to be sure my LiveCDs created with uck,
were correct, and working.

(1) Created a LiveCD with uck, from standard Ubuntu 13.04 64bit LiveCD
ISO, and wrote it to USB stick, and it booted with kernel 3.8 and got
into Unity. But this version as expected does not support touchscreen.

(2) Created a LiveCD with uck, from standard Ubuntu 13.04 64bit LiveCD
ISO, plus added the .deb packages
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1205494/ but this time no other
package updates, then writing the new ISO to USB stick, but booting
this up lead to the initramfs unable to find medium containing live
file system error, as experienced in post 27.

(3) Created a LiveCD with uck, from Saucy 17 Aug 13 64bit ISO, plus the
.deb packages http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1205494/and
writing the ISO to USB stick. This is found to boot up ok into
Unity, but it is not supporting the touchscreen. But as suspected and
pointed out in posts 27 and 28, there appears to be issues installing
the .deb packages, so those linux kernel mods are not getting into
place.

Joseph, at this point would you please let me know you thoughts on this issue
of your .deb packages not installing ? Again, see posts 27 and 28 above.
Until I hear back with some news on how to get these installed, or what is
wrong, I can't go any further with this.

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04 13.10

2013-08-16 Thread Peter B.
Joseph and all,

Long story short (as in telling the story of Marco Polo and leaving out the
China part),
I attempted to build a Ubuntu 13.04 LiveCD with uck (uck-gui) v2.4.6 from the
Ubuntu repository followed by 2.4.7 from
https://launchpad.net/~uck-team/+archive/uck-stable/+sourcepub/2931483/+listing-archive-extra

and it continues to error out at the tail end with:

open2: exec of fribidi --nopad --nobreak failed at bin/po2txt line 112
make[1]: *** [he.tr] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/tmp.9hnu56VE8z/gfxboot-theme-ubuntu/po'
make: *** [po] Error 2
Failed to build gfxboot theme

I was attempting to create a LiveCD with Ubuntu 13.04 plus plus patches plus
the Post 19 packages
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1205494/
I even installex the gfxboot-theme-ubuntu, gfxboot, and gfxboot-dev but made no
diff.
but have gotten nowhere fast with uck.If anyone with uck experience, or
who has had this working
might take a stab at this, please do, and I can then test your LiveCD.

Again, I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 as the base because Saucy 13.10 just locks
up on a Dell XPS 18 touch.

Hope to hear from you soon.

2013-08-13 Thread Peter B.
Hello Joseph. The problem for me is Saucy boots ok from USB stick, but
then completely locks up, and I have zero control to install a new
kernel package or other packages. I would need a pre-built Saucy with
those new items added, to test it. Please let me know if this is
possible, then I can test it.

2013-08-09 Thread Peter B.
Question on this to developers. If it is difficult getting a full
touchscreen setup working for Linux never mind all the gestures, etc.,
how about instread a touchscreen-driven virtual mouse-pointer that runs
as a small application on the visible Linux desktop, and drives the
mouse pointer over the screen? Or does this already exist, similar to
a screen-based keyboard ?

[Bug 1205494] Re: [Dell XPS 18] Touch screen not functioning under Ubuntu 13.04

2013-07-27 Thread Peter B.
Chris,

I made a Saucy (Ubuntu 13.10 daily) Live boot USB flash drive from the 64-bit
ISO ownloaded from /daily-live/current.
Unfortunately it did not fair well. It booted up to Unity, but from there the
mouse pointer and Unity itself were locked up or unresponsive. The only thing
I did find working to some degree was the Volume buttons on the left of the XPS
18 computer caused the Ubuntu-based volume control to come up and change volume
(until the volume is down/off then it locks up), and the Power button on the
right side of the XPS 18 appears to have Ubuntu re-act to it but shutting down.
But with Unity up, I was not even able to open a terminal, nor exit Unity to a
shell, as Unity was locked up and the mouse. Let me know what you want to do
from here.

[Bug 1191008] Re: Dell XPS 18 touchscreen not functional

2013-07-25 Thread Peter B.
I also have the Dell XPS 18 touch screen all-in-one type computer.
Because Windows 8 is on the computer, and no way to re-install it (MS
does not provide), I can only boot directly to Ubuntu 13.04 from the
LiveDVD written to USB, which I have done successfully. However Ubuntu
is not providing touch screen support out of the box, but neither is
LinuxMint 15 which I also tried. The only way I've gotten Mint and
Ubuntu to have some touch screen support is running it as a vm guest
under VMware Player.

Anyway, with Ubuntu 13.04 booted from USB (LiveDVD), here is the output
of dmidecode per your request.

root@ubuntu:~# sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s

[Bug 1191008] Re: Dell XPS 18 touchscreen not functional

2013-07-25 Thread Peter B.
One quick addition to me previous post - the BIOS update website given
in a previous post, says the latest BIOS is

A05 7/8/2013

while on my XPS 18, dmidecode says

A05 06/04/2013

I downloaded the one dated 7/8/2013 and ran it, but as I suspected, the
installer says my computer with BIOS A05 is already at the latest.
Not sure what the date discrepancy means.

Also, this URL
http://lii-enac.fr/en/architecture/linux-input/multitouch-devices.html
lists apparently supported and some partially supported multi-touch devices for
Linux. Don't know if anyone is aware if the XPS 18 touch screen device is on
the list at the above URL.

[Bug 1172670] [NEW] THinkPad X121e : WLAN disabled after waking from suspend

2013-04-25 Thread Peter B P
Public bug reported:

Upon suspending this laptop, running Ubuntu 12.10 w/ latest updates,
WLAN hardware becomes disabled (disabled by hardware switch).

Keyboard function key to enable WLAN has no effect.

Installing latest Mainline kernel does not fix the problem, either.

Any suggestions on what I should do to further troubleshoot/diagnose?

[Bug 902557] Re: Wireless not working in 12.04 for rtl8192ce (RTL8188CE)

2012-12-21 Thread peter b
on acer 725 rtl8188ce same problem with 1204 and with mint equivalent.
pls take a look at

http://askubuntu.com/questions/192873/toshiba-satellite-c850-wlan-
rtl8188ce-not-working

I just finished successfuly compiling and installing rtl8188ce driver
indicated on the url above. first, download the driver (url above) and
extract it.

VV important, BEFORE compiling the new driver (in addition to above url
instructions) pls do

sudo rmmod rtl8188ce

and just to be on the safe side, blacklist also on
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

rtl8188ce
rtlwifi

then reboot. lsmod will not show rtl8188ce and rtlwifi (just check).
then navigate in a terminal to the extracted folder and continue with

make
make install
reboot

as indicated in url. the driver is not activated yet. in a terminal just
UNBLACKLIST rtl8188ce and rtlwifi (just place a # in front of these
lines in blacklist.conf). the newly compiled/installed driver will be
activated. if no indicator light yet just rebbot and all should be ok.

[Bug 775788] Re: Acer 522 / Ubuntu 11.04 / No mic - Sound problems

2012-03-26 Thread peter b
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 741825 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/741825

@Miguel Lopes Moreira

there is no linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic listed in synaptic. I
have latest kernel -13 installed.

all entries under linux-backports-modules for -13 kernel pertain to
either wireless or some other devices or are for older kernel versions.

am I missing anything please ?

[Bug 875892] Re: Wi-Fi not working after 11.10 upgrade Lenovo S10-3t

2011-10-24 Thread peter b
@jsalisbury

well, a little story first -

- I disabled/removed the STA driver then
- over the weekend a belkin N300 usb wifi dongle plugged in and tried;
- I fiddled with dkms and tried to get the realtek module loaded; net results
same as with the internal broadcom (the realtek module was created and
installed with no errors); brief conn'n established , the dongle light was
coming on - as with broadcom then out of the blue disconnected and dongle
light disappeared.
- then in additional drivers the belkin/realtek driver removed too.
- used ndiswrapper and xp drivers; net result even worse than the first two -
as soon as the command connect issued the desktop disappeared , dumped to a
console with enable trace last line and a hard pc lock.

so I decided for a new oneiric install with the N300 usb wifi present.
alernate CD install went ok. after first boot

conclusion : broadcom internal wifi works flawless; solid good steady

I used the same install media, reformatted the same size part sda7 same
swap - totally puzzled.

thanks to all. I will not try any other kernels - if it ain't broken
don't fix it. thank you Joseph.
