[Bug 1934049] [NEW] Totem cannot play H264 videos

Public bug reported:

I am opening a fresh bug report although I am aware that similar bugs

[Bug 1562875] Re: Totem can't play H264 on fresh 16.04 beta install

2021-06-29 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I can confirm that this happens in Ubuntu 21.04 as well. I have all
gstreamer plugins and required dependencies installed but Totem does not
play H.264 videos. They were playing fine on earlier versions of Ubuntu
(including 20.04)

I have this problem too. The libreoffice install came along with Ubuntu
20.04. Pressing F1 shows a message: "the object cannot be accessed due
to insufficient user rights". Purging and reinstalling the help package
and the entire LO package does not solve the problem

[Bug 1864799] Re: evolution problems sending and receiving email on GMail and GSuite

2020-03-03 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Periodically, after working for a few hours, evolution may suddenly
throw up a "timeout was reached" when sending a message. Then
connections to imap folders also stops. I have to reboot in order to get
things going again. After a reboot, the same message in the outbox,
which was showing the timeout error gets sent

[Bug 1864799] [NEW] evolution problems sending and receiving email on GMail and GSuite

2020-02-25 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I have two Google Mail accounts configured to send and receive email on
evolution. One is personal and one is official. The official one is a
GSuite account. Every day, and sometimes many times in a day evolution
reports and inability to receive or send email from these accounts. The
error reported is either an authentication error or a timeout error. A
message popup shows an option to "reconnect". Clicking that opens up a
dialog box for Google (OAuth) authentication and google asks me to allow
GNOME Evolution to do this or that. I have to click allow and after that
it may work or I may have to restart my computer to reconnect on
evolution.

After I complete the authentication process I receive a message from
Google that I signed in from an unknown device, whereas it is the same
notebook computer from which I have been connecting for several months.

I am reporting this as an issue with evolution because Google for some
reason treats it as a less secure app. In order to access my email from
evolution I have to turn ON the "allow less secure apps" setting at
Google.

[Bug 1857868] [NEW] Cairo Dock disappears when display is scaled

2019-12-29 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I have been using cairo-dock for many years and find it truly versatile
and impressive. I encountered a new problem recently though, just by
chance. If I use Gnome display settings and scale the display beyond
100%, cairo-dock simply disappears!.

This happens when scaling from 100 to 200% under normal circumstances.
It also happens when mutter experimental features are enabled and the
display is scaled to 125% or 150%. The dock cannot be seen.

Steps to reproduce: 1. Choose a higher scale than 100% from gnome
settings 2) cairo dock cannot be seen 3) revert to 100% and cairo dock
appears again at its usual position.

Further, I need to add that other UI elements including docks (such as
ubuntu's native dock or plank) do not exhibit this behaviour. They are
visible and functional

[Bug 1852407] [NEW] Grub does not load ubuntu at boot

2019-11-13 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I have an HP EliteBook with a 128 GB SSD drive (/dev/sdb) and a 1 TB
disk (/dev/sda). /dev/sda also has a windows 10 recovery partition which
is used to load windows. I have left this partition alone and installed
ubuntu 19.10 as follows:

/home on /dev/sda6
/boot on /dev/sdb2
/ on /dev/sdb5

Partitions look as follows:

sda:
/dev/sda1 EFI
/dev/sda2 Microsoft Reserved
/dev/sda3 Basic data
/dev/sda6 /home **created by me from free space***
/dev/sda4 MS windows recovery
/dev/sda5 basic data (system)

sdb (all created by me):

/dev/sdb1 EFI mounted at /boot/efi
/dev/sdb2 ext4 mounted at /boot
/dev/sdb3 ext4 mounted at /tmp
/dev/sdb4 swap
/dev/sdb5 ext4 mounted at /

After install, the system does not:

1. boot to Ubuntu (which is the only operational system - windows is just meant
to be used for recovery and I have not used it)
2. may show a grub screen - on typing exit it goes into windows recovery

I tried boot-repair after which powering on or rebooting simply leads to
the windows recovery screen

Previously I had installed ubuntu 19.04 on the same system without a
problem.

But after doing a clean install of 19.10, the above problems have
started

Now the only way I can boot into Ubuntu is by repeatedly pressing F9/F10
and going into the boot menu and choosing ubuntu.

What could be wrong?

Will be very difficult to use the system at this rate.

Any help or pointers are appreciated

Thanks in advance

applet app and things are working fine!.

[Bug 1698792] Re: gnome-shell hogs cpu

2017-06-19 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Closer examination reveals the following:

1. In "normal" times, gnome-shell cpu usage could vary between around 7% and go
up to 50%
2. The cpu usage figure keeps going up and down frequently
3. However, the problem starts when I press the Left Win key and enter the
activities overview/search mode
4. gnome-shell cpu usage starts steadily rising.
5. As I type in the search box gnome-shell rises to 100% cpu. UI becomes
unresponsive.
6. I click on the app icon which I want to launch
7. After a few seconds, cpu usage comes down. Wait indicator starts rolling
8. After a few seconds of wait indicator, the app launches

Even if no app is selected, simply entering overview mode and exiting it
pulls gnome-shell down

[Bug 1698792] [NEW] gnome-shell hogs cpu

2017-06-19 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I am reporting this as a separate bug because the earlier bugs apply to
earlier versions of Ubuntu and have been invalidated.

My system is Ubuntu 17.04 (updated not clean install)

The problem occurs after a few hours of work.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Keep working on the system for some hours
2. Press the Left Win key to get into search mode

What happens then:
An overview of windows will be displayed. The UI will freeze or become
unresponsive. Mouse pointed can be moved around but clicking on any window
thumbnail does not give the focus to it

Switch to a shell using Ctrl+Alt+F1. Run top. gnome-shell is at the top
with 100% CPU usage.

I tried disabling some extensions to see if these cause the problem. I
also tried changing the gnome-shell theme to default but no impact.
Problem remains.

If someone could point me to what more information needs to be gathered,
I will be happy to provide it.

Thanks

[Bug 1484013] [NEW] Ubuntu 15.04: Mouse cursor goes out of control on touchpad right click

2015-08-12 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

This has been a persistent problem. If I use the right click button on
my notebook (HP Probook 430) touch pad the mouse cursor goes out of
control. I cannot direct it using the touch pad. It shakes and moves on
its own accord.

Only option left is to reboot because logging out and logging back in
does not solve the problem. Renders the touchpad and the notebook
unusable

Does not happen with left click though. I have disabled all touch pad
enhancements (such as tap to click etc.) but hasn't worked.

[Bug 1450460] [NEW] Gnome-Documents search bar repeats characters when typing

2015-04-30 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I have used gnome-documents earlier on Ubuntu 14.10 without any
problem.

However on a fresh install of Ubuntu 15.05, I opened the app and wanted
to find documents. So I pressed Ctrl-f and in the search bar started
typing.

What I typed was:

"migration" (without the quotes)

What got entered into the search bar was:

"mmiiggrraattiioonn' (without the quotes)

That is, each character I typed once was automatically echoed twice in
the search bar!.

Weird.

[Bug 1448418] [NEW] Logout not working in Cairo Dock

2015-04-25 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I am running cairo-dock 3.4 on a fresh clean install of Ubuntu 15.04.

The logout menu in the dock does not work. That is, it does nothing if
the "Logout" menu item is clicked.

However, Restart and Shutdown work properly.

[Bug 1443764] Re: Black screen of death: system suddenly stopped working soon after upgrade to kernel 3.16.0.34-generic

2015-04-16 Thread pramathesh ambasta
The system is working now. I have been taking backups on the external
drive connected to the 4-port hub it since yesterday. The backup (a
large one) ran for several hours until late at night without a hitch.
Since this morning the system has booted fine and has not shown any sign
of crashing.

Thanks to Christophe Penalver for his detailed instructions on how to
upgrade the kernel, I upgraded to a mainline kernel. The kernel is
linux-kernel-4.0.0-04-generic.

I am marking the status of this bug as "CONFIRMED".

I have also added the tags as suggested by Christophe.

Thanks once again for all the inputs

2015-04-15 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Hi.

the output of the commands

sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

is:

M74 Ver. 01.09
01/26/2015

What was I doing?

I was working on Caligra Flow to create a flow chart.

Backintime was running a backup of my home directory on an external 1 TB
Seagate storage drive (USB) connected to my laptop via a 4-port USB hub.

I was moving the mouse to position an object on the flow chart when the
black screen of death occurred again.

Please let me know what other information I need to provide.

[Bug 1443764] Re: Black screen of death: system suddenly stopped working soon after upgrade to kernel 3.16.0.34-generic

2015-04-14 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Thanks a lot Christopher M. Penalver, especially for the really prompt
response

I upgraded the BIOS like you said. And I think it has worked!

After upgrade, I booted up system as normal, plugged in the 4-port USB
hub and plugged in the Seagate expansion drive into the hub. I then
started backintime for a backup and started doing my work.

It has been nearly 20 minutes since then. Backup has completed without a
problem. The system is still alive and kicking.

Thanks once again. Huge relief

[Bug 1443764] Re: Black screen of death: system suddenly stopped working soon after upgrade to kernel 3.16.0.34-generic

2015-04-13 Thread pramathesh ambasta
It happened again!

I rebooted and I was working with not problems. Then I plugged in my
external drive to my 4-port hub and started running backintime-gnome. A
few seconds later the BSOD appeared again. It said that there was a
kernel panic and an unhandled exception in one of the interrupts. Also
some message about usb-ehcd (?).

I hard rebooted again. This time I have attached my external drive to a
USB port *on* my laptop. No problem so far!

Could it be due to the 4-port hub then? Maybe!

Please note that the 4-port hub is still attached to the computer and an
external keyboard is plugged into it. So I am guessing that attaching
the seagate drive to the port creates the problem.

[Bug 1443764] [NEW] Black screen of death: system suddenly stopped working soon after upgrade to kernel 3.16.0.34-generic

2015-04-13 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I update the kernel images from update-manager this morning on my Ubuntu
14.10 system running on my laptop.

I had started backintime-gnome to take a backup of my home directory on
an external seagate drive connected to a 4 port USB hub. This is
something I do almost daily

I was editing a desktop shortcut on nano when suddenly I saw a black
screen with a lot of dumps and messages from the kernel (or what seemed
like the kernel). The screen was frozen - no mouse movement or keyboard
movement would restore it. I had to force a restart using the power
button.

This is the first time I have encountered something like this.

[Bug 1405922] Re: Caption Text not visible in cairo-dock

2015-01-01 Thread pramathesh ambasta
First of all, best wishes for the new year!

Well! Well, I don't think we can let C-D off so easily:):).

No other gnome/gtk app has any problem with Zon or Mediterranean themes.
Why does C-D? And how come trying to set the colors manually in C-D
configuration does not help matters?

[Bug 1405922] Re: Caption Text not visible in cairo-dock

2015-01-01 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Yes i mean that the text and background are the same color because of
which I cannot see the text. I know the text is there because if I move
the mouse around and do a blind hit to where I feel "Yes" is likely to
be, the dialogue responds.

The problem is related to C-D's integration with the gtk theming engine.
I changed from Zoncolor to some other theme and did not find the same
problem.

[Bug 1405922] [NEW] Caption Text not visible in cairo-dock

2014-12-27 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

Running Cairo-Dock 3.4 on Ubuntu 14.10

I cannot see the text on popups and confirmation (yes/no) dialogues.

For instance, if I change the theme of cairo-dock, a dialogue pops up
asking if I would like to continue without saving the current theme. I
can't see the message or the options or the option icons. I know the
text and the dialogue is there because pressing Enter on the keyboard
starts the "importing theme" dialogue or pressing Escape on the keyboard
brings me back to the cairo-dock configuration window.

This happens even if I remove all the configuration files and restart CD

This happens whether or not I use glx

This happens even if I use the default configuration files.

This happens no matter what the gnome theme is (currently I am using
ZonColorZtra-DeviantArt as the GTK theme and EleMint as the icon theme.

This also happens if I start CD using the -d option to point to another
config location.

As far as I can remember, this was not the problem with Ubuntu 14.04

[Bug 1296701] Re: evolution-rss-plugin not activatable in evolution

2014-12-03 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I confirm that this bug exists on Ubuntu 14.04. The plugin is not
activable.

Also the compilation of the module as suggested by fuielrod does not
work because the plugin terminates with the following error:

CC evolution_module_rss_la-rss.lo

compilation terminated.

The required devel files and libraries for evolution have been loaded.
Then why this message?

[Bug 1320203] [NEW] cannot burn dvd from iso

2014-05-16 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I was not able to burn a Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 iso image to DVD. I used
K3B, Brasero and growisofs from the command line in that order.

Funny thing is that there is no error message or any other message. K3B
and growisofs both show successful completion. When I insert the disk
into the tray and close the tray, it shows up as a blank DVD+R once
again!

However trying to write to this blank DVD again results in an error
(something to the effect that beyond the first 2 KB the disk is not
empty).

Brasero on the other hand shows the disk as being written without error

[Bug 1319778] [NEW] cannot resume from suspend Ubuntu 14.04

2014-05-15 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

This is on a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04. The other bug report on this
issue which comes close is an old one (Ubuntu 7.04 in filed in 2009).
Hence a new bug

No matter which method I use to suspend - shutting the lid or using the
options in the session indicator, ubuntu 14.04 does not resume after
suspend.

This is also true no matter which desktop environment I am in - I have
three: Unity, gnome-desktop and cairo-dock.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Shut lid: suspend is initiated

2. press power button on notebook to resume, the bluetooth, wireless
lights etc. are shining suggesting that the notebook is trying to resume

3. But no, it does not resume.

4. Power off completely and power on again

Pinging to the notebook from another device when in the above state
results in an "unreachable" error.

Substitute Step 1 for suspending from main shutdown/session menu: result
is the same

It has been the same on my notebook since 11.04

[Bug 1318191] [NEW] Shotwell does not show facebook, picassa publishing options and cannot add acount to publish to

2014-05-10 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

When I click the Publish button for a photo or a group of photos,
Shotwell does not show Facebook, Picassa, YouTube or Flickr as options
for publishing. Only shows Tumblr, Piwigo and Yandex.

Clicking on the "Add More Accounts" closes the publish dialogue.

Result: Can't publish to any of the accounts.

The Preferences window shows all necessary plugins (PIcassa Web Albums,
Facebook etc.) as installed and active.

Before this clean install of Ubuntu 14.04, I had upgraded to Ubuntu
14.04. Same behaviour. However, I downloaded the source code from Yorba
and compiled shotwell. The publishing feature worked as expected i.e., I
could publish to Picassa etc. (I did note that Ubunut complained a lot
about my installing json-glib which was needed by Shotwell)

This behaviour is new. In Ubuntu 12.04, it was possible to publish to
Picassa Web Albums without any problems.

The attached picture shows the publish dialog *not* showing the options
and the plugins as installed

[Bug 1310313] Re: Dual monitor configuration not saved (

2014-05-03 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Sorry but the above did not work either because the x value for the
secondary monitor would keep getting reset to 1366. I had to insert a
line in the script which used xrandr with the "--same-as" option to
clone the display. This workaround has worked

[Bug 1310313] Re: Dual monitor configuration not saved (

2014-05-03 Thread pramathesh ambasta
The problem arises because despite telling the display setting
configurator to clone two displays (laptop lcd plus external samsung
monitor), monitors.xml contains x=0 for the primary display and x=1366
for the secondary display. So I get adjacent displays after reboot or
re-login. Setting it to clone again through the display settings gives
me a cloned display for the session. However, the cloning may stop
suddenly in the middle of a window switching operation (as mentioned
above)

What did I do:

1. modified x to make it equal to zero for the secondary display

However, after logging out and logging back in I noticed that the
displays were back to default behaviour (adjacent)

So i further

2. downloaded the script at
http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/74-ubuntu/309-ubuntu-dual-display-
monitor-position-lost to ensure that the displays are cloned after the
gnome session starts

Attaching a copy of the backup of the monitors.xml file (monitors.xml~)
to illustrate the problem

This is a bug in my view and should be fixed fast because it makes work
difficult.

I confirm this in my installation (Ubuntu 14.04) on HP Probook
6506b.with Intel Integrated Graphics system.

I save a dual monitor config with "mirror" set to yes. On each reboot
Gnome loses the setting. It also loses the setting sometime when I am
switching from one program to another using alt-tab.

[Bug 1130199] Re: [HP ProBook 6560b, IDT 92HD81B1X5, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2013-04-05 Thread pramathesh ambasta
After trying out various options I sent the machine to our maintenance
people.

It seems there was a hardware issue with the sound card. They have
rectified it and the sound is working fine.

Sorry for all the trouble. As far as I am concerned, we could treat the
bug as RESOLVED and close this bug.

Thanks for everyone's time

** Description changed:

Till about a month ago there was no sound problem on my HP Probook
running Ubuntu 12.03. I think a recent upgrade has broken the sound
system. Now there is no sound at all. I have tried searching for
solutions but fixes have failed. I downloaded the latest alsa driver
from the alsa project site and compiled it. But this too has not worked.

[Bug 1130199] [NEW] [HP ProBook 6560b, IDT 92HD81B1X5, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2013-02-19 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

Till about a month ago there was no sound problem on my HP Probook
running Ubuntu 12.03. I think a recent upgrade has broken the sound
system. Now there is no sound at all. I have tried searching for
solutions but fixes have failed. I downloaded the latest alsa driver
from the alsa project site and compiled it. But this too has not worked.

Need to know what to do

[Bug 1072578] [NEW] Network Manager: eth0 and ppp0 together do not work

2012-10-29 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I have set up a small LAN in our office. The LAN uses a switch to
connect computers, some of them Ubuntu desktops/laptops, with each other
to share files and printers.

The LAN switch is connected to a broadband router which acts as a
gateway to the internet for all machines connected to the LAN. So it is
possible in normal situations for computers on the LAN to connect to
each other *and* the internet without any problems.

Additionally, these Ubuntu desktops/laptops are also configured to
connect to the internet using a broadband USB modem when necessary. This
option is used in one of two situations:

1. If the laptop is out of office and therefore not connected to the LAN
2. If the broadband router collapses due to some technical snag and is unable
to offer any internet services.

It is situation 2 that I am bothered about. In this situation Network
Manager offers us the possibility of working either on the LAN or on the
internet via the USB modem but not both. So if you want to surf the web,
you have to disconnect from the LAN. If you want to use the LAN
resources you have to disconnect the USB modem.

This should not happen. I have installed wvdial and gnome-ppp on the
machines. By setting the defaultroute and replacedefaultroute options in
/etc/ppp/peers/wvdial-pipe and /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial and not setting any
DNS entry in the eth0 configuration, I am able to access both the LAN
resources and the internet. This is the way it should be.

In my view, Network Manager (or Modem Manager) is unable to replace the
default route when it connects. In my experience, this has been a long
standing problem in various Ubuntu releases ever since Network Manager
took over the network resources in lieu of /etc/networking/interfaces.

So my suggestion is that Ubuntu should use wvdial/gnome-ppp, take the
pain away from setting setuid permissions from wvdial and configure it
to replace the default route at the time of installation. Network
Manager could simply be a wrapper around wvdial to do this instead of
trying unsuccessfully to reinvent the wheel.

[Bug 909980] [NEW] Display and touchpad freeze

2011-12-29 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

This happened twice in quick succession.

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 on an HP Probook 6560b notebook.

FIrst time I logged in, the desktop appeared. I started gnome-ppp for an
internet connection which I do normally whenever I need and have never
encountered any problem. After some time the screen went totally blank
and the touchpad froze. I had to do a hard reboot.

Second time I again logged in, connected to the internet, started
thunderbird but found the synaptic touchpad froze again. The keyboard
was working and I used it to start a terminal and reboot.

CHecked the logs to see Xorg report a ddxSigGiveup, which to my mind
spells xorg issues.

[Bug 893473] Re: Libreoffice Calc hangs system in copy paste operations

2011-11-24 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I am attaching 4 calc files from which I tried copying data. Also a
writer document which is a report into which I was pasting the data. The
paste operation finally succeeded after several hangs. The pasted data
are on pages 13 and 14.

While the calc files contain data which are in the public domain
already, the report is as of now a draft report which is not meant for
public consumption, until officially released for general reading (in
the future). This cannot be quoted nor its contents used in any way
until the document is officially and legally released. I am submitting
the document in good faith that it will only be used to arrive at a
solution to the software problems that I have been facing and not for
any other purpose

Thanks

Pramathesh

[Bug 893473] [NEW] Libreoffice Calc hangs system in copy paste operations

2011-11-21 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

When doing a copy operation from a calc spreadsheet to another
spreadsheet or to writer, calc hangs the system. Nothing works except
the mouse cursor. All displays, panels etc. freeze. Sometimes there is
screen flicker in which the screen suddenly seems to go blank and
calc/writer may start work again after a few seconds. However, the
general rule seems to be to hang the system.

In my view there is something about selecting a range of cells that
causes this. Because I find abnormal behaviour during selection/copy-
paste operations. If in a sheet I select a range of cells and copy them
to another sheet, then come back to the earlier sheet, I find the
selection still highlighted. Cross-referencing cells across sheets for
formuale etc. become a problem under the circumstances.

[Bug 837536] [NEW] unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000004 on insertion of USB modem

desktop settled down and I inserted a USB broadband modem. And I
suddenly got a black screen with some kernel messages and the following
messages which end in a call trace:

I pressed control-alt-delete to force a reboot and the system rebooted

[Bug 833809] [NEW] No desktop after fresh install

2011-08-25 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I clean installed ubuntu natty on an HP Compaq 6715b notebook. No
problem in installation. After gdm startup, selecting user and entering
the password, the desktop fails to load in Ubuntu, Ubuntu-Classic or
Ubuntu-Classic (No effects) options. Only failsafe works.

I tried the latest packages from xorg-edgers but no change. Only the
desktop wall paper is visible and the mouse cursor keeps rotating as if
in wait mode.

Had to create xorg.conf manually and configure an fbdev driver to make
system work

Expected behaviour: desktop should load normally

[Bug 806368] [NEW] backintime and disk space

2011-07-06 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

I am not sure whether this bug relates to backintime or to nautilus or
both. I am filing it under backintime because using it exposed me to
this issue.

I was using backintime to backup my documents and thunderbird mail
folder (two folders, total size ~17 GB) on a separate partition on my
notebook drive. The size of the partition is 25 GB. Gparted reports a
usable space of around 23.28 GB.

Since backintime creates snapshots and as per their website, they only
save differences to files/folders (the rest are hard links), disk usage
should be incremental. However, after a couple of snapshots, the
partition filled up and backintime reported an error about not
completing the backup because of low disk space. Disk Usage Analyzer
also warned me about the partition filling up to 100%

I checked with du/df and found that disk usage was around 19GB (or 4 GB
free). When I checked the partition's properties in nautilus, it showed
the snapshot folders each as occupying arond 3.9GB and the parent folder
too occupying 3.9 GB.

But since backintime was complaining, I had to configure it to stop
taking snapshots of the mail folder. It is now backing up only my
Documents folder and has stopped complaining.

However, this can only be treated as a work around. Since backintime
uses hard links, disk space should not fill up. This is what I have
understood from their website (for example,
https://answers.launchpad.net/backintime/+question/146072).

So is the file system or nautilus mis-reporting disk space?

[Bug 712568] [NEW] Distorted icon display after selecting compact layout in icon view defaults

2011-02-03 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Since Bug no. 646034 has been expired, I am opening another bug for the
problem with some additional information.

The problem I have is that the icon display in a folder view gets
distorted. The icons are not properly aligned and don't seem to be in
properly spaced columns.

I tried to reproduce the problem. I did the following:

1. Opened a folder in Nautilus. The icons were displayed normally (see attached
file "Screenshot 1.png")
2. Went to edit preferences
3. Selected the "View" Tab
4. On the View tab, under "Default View", the drop down showed "Icon View"
5. Under Icon View Defaults, I checked the box next to "Use compact layout:"
(see attached file "Screenshot 2.png"

This led to a distortion and misalignment of the icons in the view (see
attached file "Screenshot 3.png"

I un-checked the "Use compact layout" option, but the icon view did not
get restored to normal.

[Bug 646034] Re: Peculiar icon display in nautilus

2011-01-01 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I request this bug to be re-opened. I had supplied information as
required. I also want to report that this problem has surfaced once
again. Please see the attached screenshots wherein:

1. In one there is no alignment or proper arrangement of the folder
icons.

2. In the other the icons are aligned but icon view does not sort the
icons according to name as I want it to.

Both problems have no explanation since I have done nothing to change
settings. They have happened on their own.

Expected behaviour:

1. All icons should be aligned/arranged properly
2. They should be arranged according to the order specified by user
(name/size/date whichever)

I can't figure this out since it has not happened before. Only seems a
10.04 problem

Please re-open this bug or allow me to file a new one with the same
report.

Re: [Bug 646034] Re: Peculiar icon display in nautilus

2010-09-30 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Let me attempt a more complete description. I was viewing a folder in
Nautilus. This happened to be a network mounted folder mounted via smb4k.

I cannot exactly say why it happened, but the entire icon view became
misaligned. There is an invisible row-column grid in which icons are placed
normally. This causes each icon to be aligned properly on the invisible
grid. The attached screenshot will correctly depict what I consider to be
normally and properly aligned icons inside a nautilus folder view.

Please contrast this with the screenshot I had given earlier where the icons
are not aligned at all.

The two sceenshots should make it clear as to what I am trying to
report.

[Bug 646034] [NEW] Peculiar icon display in nautilus

2010-09-23 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Some days ago, while on a folder display, something went wrong and the
icons became mis-aligned. I had to delete all gnome settings and login
again to cure the problem. However, the problem is not solved as the
attached screenshot will show. Note that now this does not happen with
all folders, only some (in fact the screenshot folder is the only one
which I have noticed so far with this problem).

Why is this happening?

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 572818] Re: X wont start

2010-07-29 Thread pramathesh ambasta
This affects me too! I had to reinstall Lucid because of some problems.
I changed to the vesa driver by using a backup copy of xorg.conf from my
previous install. However, I got this message at login. In my previous
install, I had done some pretty complicated stuff which I don't remember
to disable kernel modesetting and use the vesa driver, which I don't
remember now. So I decided to use the fbdev driver. I found this in the
xorg.conf.failsafe presumably output by ubuntu at some point. The driver
loads and X starts up. From a functional point of view, I can't see much
difference (as yet) between vesa and fbdev.

But the above problem does exist and I will be glad to provide config
files etc. in case needed

I know about the workaround and I have been following something similar
to work with Thunderbird. But when Thunderbird claims to be integrated
with gnome, I don't see why anyone should need to do this. Think about
an ordinary user wanting to use Ubuntu/Thunderbird. It will be very
discouraging to have to get into symlinks etc.

[Bug 608372] [NEW] ppp does not replace default route

2010-07-21 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ppp

This seems to be new to Lucid. I have used gnome-ppp and wvdial to
successfully connect using a usb modem (Huawei datacard) in the past,
while remaining connected to the local LAN through eth0. I needed to set
the "defaultroute" and "replacedefaultroute" options in
/etc/ppp/peers/wvdial and /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial-pipe and it would work
in earlier Ubuntu versions (8.04, 9.04, 9.10).

With Ubuntu 10.04, I have noticed that the default route does not get
replaced and I have to disconnect eth0 in order to get ppp0 going. If
eth0 and ppp0 are both connected, despite the above options set, the
system is unable to connect to the internet. This also happens if I use
NetworkManager to connect using the Mobile Broadband option and with the
above two options set in /etc/ppp/options.

The default route is replaced only intermittently, and there does not
seem to be any logic to why it is happening.

THis is more information on the above xorg freeze. This time my notebook
was connected to a Toshiba LCD projector for a presentation. The
projection went on fine for some seconds and then suddenly the external
monitor went blank

Later on I found the ddxSigGiveUp message in the Xserver log.
