[Bug 1071808] Re: glabels font selection extremely slow

2013-02-02 Thread ricardisimo
I had reported a similar bug (maybe the one you cite above) where
glabels was not displaying fonts. The developers fixed the issue very
quickly. There seems to have been some regression however. Proportional
fontswill not display. The scroll of fonts is there, and you can take
random guesses as to which font you are selecting, but it's like
throwing a dart at a map. One workaround would be to allow the user to
type in exactly the desired font. Half the time I know which font I
want, but cannot find it.

It wasn't appearing as an option in Additional Drivers until I added the
repo, even though it was definitely installed, at least as per Synaptic.
No idea why.

So far so good, although to be honest I've gotten used to using my other
machine, so I'll have to make some effort to spend more time on the
nvidia computer.

What I don't get is that I have tried installed 304.37 invidia-current,
but the driver in use (as per System Settings >> Additional Drivers) is
nvidia-current-updates, and that is 295.49. Do I need to uninstall

I'm posting here (rather than the duplicate) only because I seem to be
noticing that the only constant is significant network activity (loading
a page, launching pan newsreader, bittorrent, etc.) I'm not 100%
certain, but I can't recall the machine ever crashing while I was, say,
just playing a game or working on a document. At a bare minimum there
was something downloading in the background while I did other stuff,
then... boom.

[Bug 594408] Re: Xorg crash occasionally when I am working it will just logout back to the login screen

2012-06-30 Thread ricardisimo
This is happening to me as well, only on one of my machines, albeit the
one which has gone the longest without a fresh install... just regular
updates and upgrades as they came along. Not really sure yet if this is
hardware or software related.

The only constant so far seems to be network activity. That is, it
always seems to coincide with requesting some action either on a
webpage, with a newsreader, with Transmission, etc. Even if some such
action was not just requested, at a bare minimum there is an active
connection when it occurs.

I would greatly appreciate being able to collect data on this, but I
haven't a clue how to do so. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

[Bug 958929] [NEW] Pitivi hangs at 1 second remaining

[Bug 891505] [NEW] Intermittent static/distortion in VLC

2011-11-16 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

The audio in any type of video file (avi, mkv, wmv, mov, etc.) is
heavily distorted, leaning towards highly mechanical-sounding, digitized
static. When it starts appearing it doesn't go away until I make it go
away, and I've only found one way to do that: I open up Audio >>
Visualizations >> Spectrometer while a file is playing, and then I
disable the Spectrometer. Voila. Then all of my video files play just
fine for a while, maybe a few days or a week. No idea what starts the
problem over again. Any ideas?

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2011-11-04 Thread ricardisimo
Kyle, you say it's still a bug, but the bug was that an option was
offered that didn't work. That option has now been removed, and with it
the bug, no?

Don't get me wrong, I can't believe that this problem hasn't been fixed
by anyone as of yet, and I'd love to have these sorts of options
restored, as they seem to be steadily disappearing from Ubuntu (maybe
Kubuntu is in our futures?). But removing the option does indeed remove
the "bug".

The "bug" is gone. As I mentioned in post #9, my system was still using

[Bug 660490] Re: Shotwell: Change picture size?

2011-07-18 Thread ricardisimo
Temporary resizing for the purposes of email would be nice as well, just
as F-Spot did before Shotwell. To this end height and width are
meaningless. People have a sense of how many MBs they can fit into an
email, but probably couldn't care less about screen dimensions. Also,
most of us probably want to keep the "full-sized" original, and
immediately discard any resized versions.

[Bug 453942] Re: Evolution freezes while checking IMAP email

2011-05-08 Thread ricardisimo
Evolution freezes my system up completely (except the cursor, I should
say.) It doesn't happen when evolution first launches, but only when I
go to "Contacts" and try selecting a specific contact (any specific
contact, rather). I'm attaching the trace I produced following the debug
instructions. I had to leave the system frozen for hours before I could
x-out evolution. It stayed frozen and grayed out, but at least I got the
little pop-up dialog that asked if I wanted to force quit. I chose yes,
and then could get to the terminal.

I think I was supposed to follow the second half of the instructions
WHILE evolution was frozen, but I couldn't do any such thing, because
the entire system was frozen. Anyhow, debug seemed to say something
about there being no trace to report. I don't know... please peruse the
attached report, and let me know what else I can produce for you.
Thanks. This is really annoying.

[Bug 763036] [NEW] Odd default fonts in OpenOffice.org documents

2011-04-16 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I'm on Ubuntu Maverick 10.10, fully updated. Using OpenOffice.org 3.2.1
OOO320m19 (Build:9505)ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu package
1:3.2.1-7ubuntu1.1

Any new document I open has as it's default font some rather curious
decorative fonts, like savatage or Brady Bunch, which I'm sure are fine
fonts, but not really useful for spreadsheets or formal letters. I have
tried numerous times to edit the default formats with the "Styles and
Formatting" window, changing both the default option as well as the
individual styles ("Heading", "Result", etc.)

No matter. The next time I open a new document, the decorative fonts are
the defaults yet again. Not only that, but even in documents where I
have already changed the default font to, say, Arial, every time I paste
new material into a cell or document, it reverts back to the decorative
font.

What's up? Is this a GNOME desktop setting that is bleeding into OOo? Or
is this purely an OpenOffice issue? Please advise as to how I can
provide more information. One thing I can tell you right away that may
be contributing to this problem is that I have several thousand fonts
installed on my computer, about a third system-wide and the rest in my
.fonts folder.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

[Bug 366217] Re: Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Fails to connect to any network

2011-03-29 Thread ricardisimo
It's happening on every laptop on which I've tried Ubuntu in the past
two years or so, no matter the make, model or wireless card... what the
hell is going on? Ubuntu wireless works on desktops but not laptops,
which is about as back-asswards as one can conceive.

So, has there been a fix or workaround issued for this yet?

[Bug 47604] Re: "Pictures Folder" isn't configurable

2011-03-17 Thread ricardisimo
The Gnome aspect to this is, of course, annoying and deplorable and I'll
never understand their logic or motivations. However, it would be nice
to pick which Pictures folder is to be used. "Pictures" could include
one's porn collection, which is then being broadcast to your co-workers
five minutes into your coffee break. No biggie, you move your porn
collection. But most everyone has to discover that little problem (or
worse, not discover it) on their own.

Give people the option either to select the appropriate folder or to
deselect "Pictures Folder" from their randomized screensaver collection.

[Bug 504645] Re: Brasero won't accept FLAC files for audio disc project

2011-02-27 Thread ricardisimo
I'm having the same problem:

>>"Neko Case - Blacklisted - 14 - Untitled.flac" could not be opened.
>>"Neko Case - Blacklisted - 14 - Untitled.flac" is not suitable for audio or
>>video media.

And I click OK, and the second song on the mix - also flac - says the
same thing. I've read through several threads and installed all of the
codecs and libraries mentioned in all of them. No change.

I'm on 10.10, fully updated. K3b does the job perfectly. I'm saving the
playlist to m3u in rhythmbox, then opening that m3u with k3b, and voila.
Still, it should not be an issue, certainly not on a Linux system with
open formats. Bizarre.

[Bug 574886] Re: Apt has strange network errors when updating indexes.

2011-02-12 Thread ricardisimo
Having the same problem, and I've tried any variation on the posted
suggestions above, but quite honestly, when I go to my router's address
at 192.168.7.254 (by the way fellow newbs, your router's IP address is
to be found in the file /etc/resolv.conf) I get no useful options. I'm
going to try posting the screenshot with the menu items for my Motorola
router. If anyone can give some I dea as to where to go from here,
please let me know.

My issue appears to be with the third-party repos as well. Although
NOTHING is upgrading, at least the Ubuntu main repos appear to be
updating. Any more permamnent fix for this in the works? Is it really a
timeout issue? Can't that be lengthened?

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2010-10-13 Thread ricardisimo
On my computer at work, I have always simply upgraded to the newer

files or folders dictate this? Can I just copy and paste some folder

Is it a pipedream to think that we might get some of these options back

[Bug 322216] Re: Firefox RSS feed keeps gnome-screensaver from activating

2010-07-01 Thread ricardisimo
As far as it still being an issue, yes and no... It appears to be
behaving just a bit differently now.

The screen does lock, however, the screensaver doesn't show up at all.
Once I finally move the mouse or touch the keyboard, the screensaver
will flash for an instant, and then the login screen will appear.
Imagine a screensaver whose only option was to freeze the current
monitor view and display nothing else. That's effectively what is
happening.

In other words, this is still a bit of a problem. Anyone walking past
can still see what I was doing, and read any open documents that are
displayed. However, they cannot manipulate anything once the screensaver
has "started" (even though it is never visibly functioning) at least not
without my password.

Does this make sense?

[Bug 584632] [NEW] composer changes font mid email

2010-05-23 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

font size change on screen, normally in the second line of text. The
second line appear smaller than the first. It's barely perceptible, so
half them time I think I am imagining it.

Well, I've started Bccing to myself to check, and the emails I am
receiving from myself are not only a different size, they're also a
different font. Composer starts in some default serif, and by the second
line is sans. I'd bee glad to email someone viz thunderbird, and also
send along a screenshot of how it looks while I am typing.

2010-05-05 Thread ricardisimo
I have now upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04, and the problem is almost exactly
the same. I don't think it even gets to the splash screen at this point,
just the notification of which partition is going to be loaded (not sure
if that's before or after the splash).

2.6.31-14 remains the only kernel that works properly on my computer. I
now expect that this will remain the case forever and ever and ever.

Please believe me when I say I remain supremely grateful for all of the
fantastic work that is done by the Linux and Ubuntu communities on
behalf of everyone, including myself. However, I cannot believe what is
happening here. This is the second thread on Launchpad regarding this
issue, both together totaling probably thirty or forty posts, almost
exclusively from myself giving updates.

NOT ONE SINGLE SOLITARY PERSON CAN EVEN POST A SIMPLE NOTE OF SYMPATHY
OR EMPATHY? I'm not even talking about asking me to check on this or
that... What the hell is going on? Why can no one even point me to
another forum with people who are willing to help?

You... yes YOU reading this post right now. Post anything. Post an empty
note in reply... Please, I'm begging you... anything at all. Jesus H.

[Bug 516362] Re: Ooo Writer crashes entire system on printing page 2

2010-03-22 Thread ricardisimo
"Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
... "

ECHO... Echo... echo...

Anyhow, the problem still persists, for anyone who's interested. At this
point I've developed the habit of printing to file in PDF format, and
printing hard copies from there, because... well, obviously, complete
system crashes are not terribly productive, especially for something
that calls itself the "Productivity Suite".

Thanks for any help you can give here.

[Bug 526145] Re: Boot of newer linux images stopped at usplash logo

2010-03-17 Thread ricardisimo
May I ask why the tag "kernel-series-unknown" was added? We know exactly
the last kernel that will work (2.6.31-14) and that nothing since then
has worked... Or don't we? I'm still a bit of a newb, but that bit
confuses me.

[Bug 526145] Re: Boot of newer linux images stopped at usplash logo

2010-03-15 Thread ricardisimo
As expected, I was able to boot the new kernel a few times, and then
just as I felt comfortable enough with it to edit my menu.list, it
stopped loading.

Mind you, I've been trying to set it to 0, as per the commented-out
instructions:

"## default num
# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0, and
# the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used."

Please advise if I am doing something wrong.

[Bug 526145] Re: Boot of newer linux images stopped at usplash logo

2010-03-12 Thread ricardisimo
So, when kernel 2.6.31-20-generic was first installed, it failed to
load, freezing at usplash, just like every other since ~14. However, I
re-try new kernels on free days, and the past two days, this newest
kernel is loading properly.

I do not expect this to last, however. They all work randomly, and/or
for a short period. Normally, as soon as I set the default boot kernel
to "0" in my menu.list, it ceases to work.

[Bug 526145] [NEW] Boot of newer linux images stopped at usplash logo

2010-02-22 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

No kernel after 2.6.31-14 will load properly, at least not consistently.
Booting stops at usplash logo, with no drive activity evident.

If there is a kernel update, or sometimes another package like a recent
linux-firmware update, I will get one or two successful boot sessions
from the newer kernel (currently 2.6.31-19.56). Then, invariably, it
starts failing again, and I am forced to regress to 2.6.31-14 (I edit my
menu.list boot options).

I am on Koala, fully updated, so far as I can tell. Here is my lspci:

[Bug 483451] Re: Ubuntu fails to load after white logo splash screen.

2010-02-22 Thread ricardisimo
There was a linux-firmware update today that seemed like it might be
pertinent to this issue. After updating, I switched my menu.list to "0"
for the default kernel, which is to say the newest one instead of
2.6.31.14. Then I rebooted - twice. So far so good. I have my doubts
about how permanent this resolution is, since it has happened before,
only to have the problem come back. I will report back in a week or
less, regardless of the outcome.

[Bug 483451] Re: Ubuntu fails to load after white logo splash screen.

2010-02-18 Thread ricardisimo
So, two weeks have gone by, and not only has the problem not corrected
itself, but also, amazingly, not one other person on the entire planet
can even post a simple "hello" within this thread. I have to say, it's
getting to be pretty puzzling.

I see a list of over fifty names in the right sidebar, supposedly being
updated regarding this thread, and not one of you can just type a single
sympathetic note, like "Wow... sorry for your troubles... hope it gets
resolved"? No one?

Deep, long sigh.

[Bug 483451] Re: Ubuntu fails to load after white logo splash screen.

2010-02-10 Thread ricardisimo
Very little to report, but here it is:

Just before the latest kernel upgrade, I was able to get 2.6.31.17 to
load normally. Then, 2.6.31-19-generic came along and was also working
perfectly... for less than a week. I have no idea what change allowed
the newer kernels to start up, nor what subsequent change undid that
progress. And, as I've stated numerous times in this thread, until
someone - anyone - says hello and asks me to follow some simple
instruction, I won't know where to begin.

For now I am still having to load kernel 2.6.31.14, and still wondering
if Fedora or Windows 7 isn't a possible alternative. I thank anyone who
responds in advance once again.

[Bug 516362] [NEW] Ooo Writer crashes entire system on printing page 2

2010-02-02 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, fully updated (although I'm having to boot from
kernel 2.6.31-14-generic, not the current version... separate issue, I
think.)

OpenOffice.org version 3.1.1 - OOO310m19 (Build:9420). Or, alternately
(depending on where I'm looking) openoffice.org-core 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1.

My printer is an HP Officejet J4680 All-in-One.

I have newsletters I print out every month for our members, and I do so
one page at a time, so that I can print double-sided copies. Page one
has color graphics, and so I print out however many copies I need of it
(roughly 100) using "Normal" printout Mode (auto-detect paper type) and
Resolution is set to "300dpi, Color, Black + Color Cartr." These print
out perfectly every time (although sometimes way too many copies... no
idea about that.)

Then I put those pages back in the feed tray properly so as to print on
the back side of them, and I try to print the same number of copies,
only of page two instead page one, and I select "Draft Grayscale" and
"300dpi, Draft, Grayscale, Black Cartr." I select "OK", and then the
screen flashes a few times, and my entire system seizes up. Nothing
works, and there's no soft reboot as an option. Powering off, and then
back up again is the only fix. When I do power back up, the Ooo document
recovery app is right there to greet me, and it seems to do an OK job of
salvaging the file itself, but the document is a blank onscreen untiI
close Ooo and start it back up again.

I tried printing page four of the same newsletters, both in color and in
draft grayscale, both single and multiple copies, but it printed just
fine. For whatever reason - and it sounds just as crazy to me as it does
to you - the problem is with page two of any ODT documents I try to
print. Quite honestly, I have yet to try printing page two Normal, and
in color, but will do so if you would like. Please advise on how to
proceed. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

I realize I'm not supposed to clog up the bug reports with idle chatter

dismissive comment from anyone other than the OP and myself. Not one

How about a simple question from someone? A debug request? Anything from

completely would be taken just a little more seriously than this. No
one?

Something - and I don't know what - changed the the "default num" in my

was changed back to 0 at some point, by one or another update, I have to
assume. As I described, the newer kernels will not load. Don't know if
it's pertinent, but there you go.

[Bug 496134] Re: f-spot printing "missing image" icon instead of actual image

2009-12-15 Thread ricardisimo
Yes, and I just checked the permissions of each folder leading to it
from home. I own it and all of the folders, and others have access to
it. Furthermore, other apps (gthumb, GQView, gimp, etc.) can print it
OK, although they don't seem to crop to photo paper properly, adding
appallingly large margins as one would find on a document, rather than a
photo... that's a separate issue, obviously.

The long and the short of it is that I enjoy F-Spot, and would like for
it to work properly. Thanks for your hard work.

[Bug 496134] Re: f-spot printing "missing image" icon instead of actual image

2009-12-14 Thread ricardisimo
It's easily reproducible by me, at least...

- Launch F-Spot
- select photo I wish to print (in this case, dscn0128.jpg in folder
/home/ricardo/Photos/2009/12/11)
- select "Photo" >> "Print" >> and make sure settings are correct (paper
source, printout mode, resolution, etc.)
- and then either print or print preview.

Please see attached screenshot from print preview. Printed image is the
same.

I should also mention that today f-spot is crashing repeatedly. Apport
is not detecting it for some reason. Yesterday there was no problem with
crashing.

[Bug 483451] Re: Ubuntu fails to load after white logo splash screen.

2009-12-13 Thread ricardisimo
It would be nice if you could check to see if linux-image 2.6.31.14
works properly for you as well, no? Hopefully that would kind of narrow
some possibilities. Being neither a programmer nor hacker, I have no
clue myself. Thanks for replying... at least I know this thread is
actually working. :)

[Bug 496134] [NEW] f-spot printing "missing image" icon instead of actual image

2009-12-13 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

Although bug #450456 looks like it might be similar, I couldn't tell
from the description.

If I try to print (or view print preview) instead of the image I have
selected, I get the "image missing" icon instead (it looks like it's
probably the one from the Oxygen theme set, under "status"), the red
circle with the diagonal red bar, a lá "Ghostbusters". I tried altering
various printer settings to see if for some bizarre reason it was CUPS
or HPLIP instead of F-Spot, but no.

I'm on Ubuntu Koala, fully updated to the best of my knowledge; F-Spot
version 0.6.1.5. My printer is an HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-One, which
used to print everything just fine. Not a great printer by any stretch
of the imagination, but it certainly worked OK.

Thank you for your attention to this.

[Bug 298814] Re: F-Spot: 'Send by Mail' creates email but fails to attach image in Mozilla Thunderbird

2009-12-11 Thread ricardisimo
OK, sorry for all of this. It would appear that the problem may have
been that Evolution was NOT actually selected within Preferred
Applications. Instead "Custom" was selected, and Evolution was the
default. Now that Evolution is actually selected, it works just fine
sending pictures. Well, that's as much as my sleep-deprived brain can
deduce.

[Bug 483451] Re: Ubuntu fails to load after white logo splash screen.

2009-12-09 Thread ricardisimo
Latest update:

2.6.31-16 provided some relief for a few days here on this same machine,
but no longer. I have no idea what caused a renewal of this same
problem, but it started with major, MAJOR problems trying to print OOo
Writer documents (screen flashing wildly, then the entire system seizing
up), after which I used synaptic to remove most, if not all components
of Ubuntu OpenOffice.org. I then tried restarting my system, and
couldn't. 2.6.31-16 has not been successful since then. I now have to
start under 2.6.31-14 every time once again.

Is there even any hint as to what is causing this? Am I alone in
experiencing this? Is there any information I can provide? I thank you
all once again for your hard work.

[Bug 488037] [NEW] mousing over cells with notes no longer displays note

2009-11-24 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

It used to be the case - and I'm honestly not certain if the change came
with Koala or with the latest version of OOo - that when you moused over
a spreadsheet cell with a diminished note inside of it, the note would
temporarily display itself. This is/was an extremely handy feature, and
easily beats having to right-click, one-by-one, ever diminished note and
selecting "Show note", then hiding the note again until you found the
one you for which you were searching.

Please bring this back. Thanks.

[Bug 460323] Re: Karmic RC tries to load rt2870sta AND rt2800usb. Results in no WiFi

2009-11-17 Thread ricardisimo
Hello everyone. Blacklisting 2800 and adding 2780 got my connection up
and running. However, something is definitely up with the connection, at
least with regards to my browser. It seems to take forever to get
started, and then crawls after that most often. Meanwhile, once I am
connected to the Internet, if I launch Pan (my binary newsreader) it
speeds along at the rates I used to see generally under Jaunty (150-300
kbps).

What gives? I'm assuming that this has something to do with ports, since
I know newsreaders and browsers vary in at least that regard. Is this
something that will eventually be fixed? How can I help to diagnose the
problem? Thanks for everything that you do.

[Bug 469595] [NEW] double-clicking on a folder does not open it

2009-11-01 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Just that... I double-clicked repeatedly on a sub-folder of my "Videos"
folder, and nothing happened. The folder was clearly being selected and
highlighted, but nothing else would happen. I had to open it with a
right-click and "Open", which did so, but in a new window.

After apport collected the bug report information, and several minutes
passed, it now appears to be functioning properly. Why the temporary
problem, I don't know; I did not have an exceptional number of
applications running at once.

Please advise if this is worthy of investigation, or if you require more
info. Thanks for everything you do.

So, now it's happening in Adobe Acrobat 9.1.3 on Ubuntu as well... only
worse, I think. Evince at least was print frames and bars; I'm getting
blank sheets of paper from Acrobat as of today, or at least some time

I'm attaching a pdf that I can view in Acrobat (not view in evince) but

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2009-10-11 Thread ricardisimo
I don't think downgrading to Hardy is the solution, to be honest. If the
maintainers of the repositories would be so kind as to keep "legacy"
version of libgphoto (and ALL Ubuntu software, while they're at it)
available for people to force the version they need, that would be the
solution. Where are the older versions? If someone would be so kind as
to point us to them, I'm sure we could confirm or deny very rapidly what
the problem is.

Mind you, there might very well be dependency problems if we force
install a two-year-old version of libgphoto, so maybe the devs can give
us a tip or two with that as well. Thanks.

[Bug 436461] [NEW] [BIOSTAR Group P4M90-M4] late resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-09-25 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

I'm not convinced this is a bug. I hit "hibernate" by accident, then
interrupted whatever process it was trying to go through by hitting
CTRL+ALT+DEL, or maybe even hitting the reset button on the tower... I
don't remember now. I don't even know what "hibernate" is, I just know I
wanted "Log Out" instead.

What is the appropriate way to awaken a hibernating computer? Thanks.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous hibernate and prevented it from
resuming properly. The resume processing hung very near the end and will have
appeared to have completed normally.

[Bug 286932] Re: openoffice and skype menus and buttons disappear and reappear hovering over with mouse

2009-09-24 Thread ricardisimo
I'm using nvidia-glx-180 version 180.44-0ubuntu1, and having the same
problem. How exactly am I to fix this? Do I need to add someone's
personal repository, or is can someone just post a link to a .deb?
Thanks.
