[Bug 286673] Re: flash plugin 10 is extremely slow !
FYI flash is slow on my ee even running windows unless its set to super performance mode (which I don't want to worry about getting manually implemented in ubuntu so I stick with XP). This bug is for people on normal hardware that should be able to play flash under windows but dies under linux. I think this bug isn't getting much attention because its Adobe's problem...and they have no reason to fix their shoddy work. This bug is also present in Arch Linux so it's not distro specific. -- flash plugin 10 is extremely slow ! https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/286673 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 306904] Re: Dell XPSM1530 touchpad not working properly after BIOS upgrade
If you're dual booting with Windows then you might try regressing back to your old BIOS and upgrading from Windows before going back in linux. This might rule out a bad BIOS pack or upgrade. You might also try regressing back to your old BIOS from linux itself and seeing if the problem goes away. I had similar behavior happen to me on my laptop when using Acronis Disk Director 10 boot CD (which is linux based). We could disprove a BIOS problem cause there isn't other reports of people on your model on Windows getting any troubles. You can try running the Ubuntu LiveCD and seeing if the problem is still preset. If it is then it's something specific to your installaiton (IE a driver issue). [Bug 306605] [NEW] Random artifacting on Jaunty x64
Public bug reported: Ok I'm a Linux noob so I know I'm probably doing this all wrong but I decided to go for the 64-bit Jaunty install because I'm on a fairly fickle laptop and if the devs can get an OS to work on here, it will work for everyone else :D It's updated as of today (12/9) Anyways, now I'm noticing random artifacting (black bars, inverted colors) for certain parts of the screen. This is especially prevalent in firefox 3.0.4 when I switch between the terminal and ff. At first I thought that it was a bug with firefox but then I started seeing black bars in the text editor while reading the license. When I scroll past and go back the artifact, it disappears. Sometimes the artifacting in ff will happen on the status toolbar on the bottom. I'll do any trouble shooting/logging requested. The ff profile is 99% fresh...the only thing i've added is 64 bit flash. But I haven't done anything to the text editor. UPDATE: It just happened again when I was closing the terminal via right click. Then it also happened where half of ff got inverted. I tried taking a print screen using the key shortcut, but the artifact disappeared with the key press. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Ok I'm a Linux noob so I know I'm probably doing this all wrong but I decided to go for the 64-bit Jaunty install because I'm on a fairly fickle laptop and if the devs can get an OS to work on here, it will work for everyone else :D It's updated as of today (12/9) Anyways, now I'm noticing random artifacting (black bars, inverted colors) for certain parts of the screen. [Bug 306605] Re: Random artifacting on Jaunty x64
So Gnome is built on top of Xorg which is the actual desktop-kernel interface? Hmm...didn't know that but I figured I should be reporting against the graphical interface part but didn't know what it was called. I'm using the 177.82 nvidia drivers (which I believe are the latest). I checked and my card (7150m) says that its supported under those. I was using these drivers earlier this morning under Intrepid with no problems. It was also this morning that I did the -d flag to update to 9.04. So I guess by elimination I can surmise it's a problem with the upgrade or with Jaunty itself (or one of the numerous updated components it has). I am using Compiz (currently in medium effects mode but the problem was also with high)...let me quick turn off compiz by setting it to None - this turns it off right? - Yes I opened the terminal, closed it, and quickly clicked on firefox and the status bar went black for a brief second again. I appologize profusely for what I just did. Reading the wiki and running the Report function I couldn't find where the logs were output to since FF just automatically popped up saying File a new bug report...it will be attached automatically. I invalidated the report already but here's the files: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/306687 So there's my logs just tell me what to do next :D _ Yeah I know it's probably a bad idea to be running an x64 developer build but I figured that I couldn't do any more damage to my system anyways and I wanted to help Ubuntu as much as possible off the bat. ** Attachment added: xorg.conf http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20331025/xorg.conf -- Random artifacting on Jaunty x64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/306605 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

No I've never ran Ubuntu with compiz disabled completely...but because of the other bugs I have out...I'll leave it off for a few days to see if I can duplicate this. I get an error dialog saying No command 33 has been defined with a title of Metacity. [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
Ubuntu is clearly in competition with Microsoft or this bug thread wouldn't exist! There is a lot of crappy hardware out there ! Yes, I agree with you here. Except Ubuntu/Linux needs to start playing in the hardware world instead of waiting for the hardware world to play with them. The problems that I described can likely be replicated on dozens of other systems that have been mass produced by the big 3 vendors. With a roughly 3% market share, I doubt Linux will ever in the near future be able to have market-power in the way that you speak of. Ask your tech if he/she uses Linux, all of the good ones do and many feel that UBUNTU/GNOME is over simplified (I disagree) Well, I am what you would call at the power user/tech. All of my comments are from (me) who DOES research, hunt down, trouble shoot, etc. I still don't understand why so many people believe that you must be more skilled just because you can memorize a million commands to run from the terminal when Microsoft simplified the process with configuration utilities and Properties menus. For example, it would be absurd within windows if one had to start modifying the registry and manually adding dll files to get a wireless card working. Yet, in Ubuntu, every thing that I wanted to do configuration wise felt like I had to hack the entire registry of config files via the terminal. (I'm not the only one that mentions this), but things that shouldn't be THAT difficult to do in Ubuntu require hours of googling and tutorials to actually accomplishothers mentioned setting up DSL connections required an inordinate amount of work. Now because I'm actually trying to adopt Linux, I've been willing to overlook that to a certain extent, but there is a reason I'm typing this message in XP again and not Ubuntu. I don't feel hindered in XP, I feel like the computer works for me and not me for the computer. In Ubuntu it's vice versa. Sure Ubuntu has speed and security benefits (and other aesthetic benefits), but a well managed and configured XP box can get very close to Ubuntu in those aspects. I've just been looking to adopt Linux since Windows 7 is looking to be a huge flop and I can't stay with XP for another 4 years. So in summation, Ubuntu (and linux in general) needs to get out of the infant stage where only geeks that have nothing else to do can use it, configure it, and manage it before it can ever become serious competition to Windows. Now I'm a geek, and that's why I've even given Ubuntu (and OpenSUSE, and Mandriva, and Kubuntu) a chance, but I have other things to do besides spending (literally 6 hours yesterday) trying to get simple things done that I could do in XP within 2 hours. Would Ubuntu probably work much better on my desktopyou betbut you can't neglect the vast laptop user base that uses proprietary and customized hardware. -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
Ok a couple more comments. You make a reference to server linux setup. This is definitely not a fair comparison as they don't require any sort of UI interface and often don't require proprietary this and that or hard core setups. (Wasn't UNIX a server-based OS in the first place?) Second, you mention having non-technical users running linux. Yes, that's great, except I don't have the luxury of having a system handed to me that works. I have to do all the configuration myself (which is what is irking me so bad right now). It feels like there is no place to turn to for help with Ubuntu (I mean is it a user problem or a bug...with XP the answer is clear). In fact from my perspective it almost seems like the only people that can actually USE linux in general like I can use XP are the people that have been with it since the beginning and know the config files in and out as well as the syntax. Cause I think the reason why I'm having so much difficult with bugs and configuration isn't because Ubuntu itself sucks, it's just because no one that's responded to forum requests knows how to use Ubuntu to fix it. The fact that there are a billion distros just makes the problem even worse (despite what everyone thinks about more distros meaning more choice). For example...I just tried the Fedora 10 live CD and couldn't even get it to boot.do a googleother people have this problem. The fixes suggested work for somenot for others.Does a dev jump in and say whoa whoa whoa this is unacceptable to be happening for a mature distributionnope devs are MIA too busy fiddling with some KDE integration. For the autologin in XP watch how fast it can be done: Start- Run- control userpasswords2..can figure it out from there. I'd bet in linux it would be a 50 line config file modification all done via the terminal and gedit. Even when you find where you need to make the modification, there is no check this to do thisyou'd have to go google some more just to find the syntax. IMO ALL computers should have internet off the bat. For me, this requires a spoofed mac address or broadcom wireless. How the hell am I supposed to even figure out how to get these things if I don't have internet to look them up? At least in Windows there is a Control Panel to get you going on basic to moderate levels of configuration. In ubuntu the control panel consists of diagnostic tools which have 0 power of configuration. Anyways, the hunt for a good linux distro continuesI'll fumble along with Ubuntu a bit longer, try some OpenSuse, fiddle with Fedora. If I can't get any of them working in a reasonable amount of time then *shudders* I might have to go with a Mac in a couple of years. -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
^Whoa there, don't go bashing MS Office :D As far as i'm concerned Office XP is a legend that has carried me through MANY a paper. Anyways, I agree with what you are saying. Perhaps if I'd have had the opportunity to use Linux sooner than these last couple of weeks I wouldn't be so damn frustrated with it. Yes, the cure for this bug is to get more people involved that can rocket this OS up (to at least beat Macs). In fact, I'm currently considering adding a computer science minor to my current math minor just because of my desire to get into OS design and help Ubuntu/Fedora/OpenSuse/etc. out. The problem I think lies in the fact that XP doesn't really have much of a learning curveyou can turn it on and fumble your way through it quick enough. The only real learning curve comes when you want to be efficient and use ALL the features. Ubuntu, while not difficult to get running, immediately presents a mountain of a learning curve even if the smallest things go wrong. So while I have the patience (but not enough time really) to poke and prod out some solutions to my problems and how to become proficient, many other users have no such attributes. [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
In my opinion, for Ubuntu to be able to really do damage to microsoft, we need far greater support for hardware that is otherwise supported under Windows. Yes, I understand that Ubuntu is generally refusing to use anything that is closed-source, but the average joe user does not care how his hardware is working- just that it's working. 8.10 is the first version of Ubuntu that i've even bothered trying to get working since I refused to do ndiswrapper hacks which were required with earlier versions of Ubuntu to get Broadcom wifi working. And simply refusing to include basic codecs just because they are closed-source is just plain asinine. Second, Ubuntu needs to take a more proactive approach against bugs. Looking at all of the ones here, it seems only a fraction of legitimate ones get fixed. Instead it appears the developers are more interested in pumping out new and pointless features (ala Vista). Even right now I have 2 bugs and quirks out that shouldn't be present in an OS this mature (connecting to a WPA2 network and MAC address changing)both of these have no problem in XP. For further example, look at the *giant* bug right now with HP users having to hold down a key to boot the OS. The kernel developers upstream have yet to even respond to the bug thread there and the only solution here is to do more config hacking and temporary fixes. So I'm sorry, if Ubuntu wants to get competitive we've got to start getting serious about making a just works OS like Windows has been for years -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
