[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion
I had this problem with Gutsy and still have it with Hardy. My graphics card in an nVida GeForce Go 7400. On the advice of the nVidia forums, I edited my modprobe options file to set the graphics card at maximum frequency (i.e. disable throttling). This has reduced locks up from every couple of hours to once ever couple days. Still unacceptable, but a huge improvement. Here's the workaround I used: modprobe nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x"; echo 'options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x"' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/options -- system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156289 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion
Yes, I can reproduce this, and I am running Hardy (latests updates as of April 9th), and I have an Intel 945GM video chipset on an Acer Aspire 5630. To define what "this" is: If and only if I am running compiz, and leave the machine on over night, then use it the next morning, in the first few seconds of use, everything on the X screen will freeze, but the mouse will move and Alt- SysRq-k (to kill the X server) works and kills it. I would have attached my Xorg log but it seems to have moved somewhere else, I don't see it in Hardy... -- system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156289 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion
I have a Dell XPS M1210 laptop with an nVidia Geforce Go 7400 GPU running the restricted drivers on Gutsy. I have been running Gutsy for a couple months now, and have been experiencing freezes about every 2 hour during heavy usage. After significant experimentation with different applications turned on and off I can unequivocally say that the problem is compiz fusion. I have run all this week with no compiz fusion and no freezes. If I enabled compiz fusion I will freeze within 2 hours of use. Once frozen neither ctrl-alt-backspace, not the "RSEIUB" trick has any effect, so there is not syslog entry I can show. -- system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156289 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Well, I've wondered if it was the nVidia driver, but shouldn't the problem persist after turning off compiz? [Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion
I also have a freezing problem with compiz. The only difference for me is that it usually (but not always) recovers in about 15 seconds. I don't have any problems if I turn off compiz by running "metacity --replace". Here's my hardware: HP Pavilion dv9428nr laptop nVidia 6150 graphics AMD X2 TL-64 (2.2GHz) processor 2 Gigs of Ram - the problem can't be caused here I have tried using special bootup parameters. Using "noapic noirqdebug" seems to cut down on the frequency of the issue somewhat, but not enough. It still does it every 5 minutes or so. I wonder why the importance hasn't been decided on this bug. It seems pretty bad to me! [Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion
I used to have the freeze when gnome-screensaver was running (not only after suspend). I thought it was a problem with gnome-screensaver or xserver-xorg-video-intel (reported as Bug #160309). This morning I updated compiz, and now the system freezes each time it is idle for a few minutes (independently of the screensaver). I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 with the intel driver. Okay, forget what I said. Xorg froze up again. I was able to use the system all day without a problem. When it finally froze up again I had just clicked a link in Firefox. The page didn't start to load, X froze, mouse cursor still moved. Through a serial console I was able to see Xorg running at 100%. Was able to kill it but then it would only come back in safe mode.
