[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion

2008-05-06 Thread HDave
I had this problem with Gutsy and still have it with Hardy. My graphics
card in an nVida GeForce Go 7400. On the advice of the nVidia forums, I
edited my modprobe options file to set the graphics card at maximum
frequency (i.e. disable throttling). This has reduced locks up from
every couple of hours to once ever couple days. Still unacceptable, but
a huge improvement. Here's the workaround I used:

modprobe nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x"; echo
'options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x"' | sudo tee
-a /etc/modprobe.d/options

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion

2008-04-10 Thread Erik Hill
Yes, I can reproduce this, and I am running Hardy (latests updates as of
April 9th), and I have an Intel 945GM video chipset on an Acer Aspire
5630.

To define what "this" is:

If and only if I am running compiz, and leave the machine on over night,
then use it the next morning, in the first few seconds of use,
everything on the X screen will freeze, but the mouse will move and Alt-
SysRq-k (to kill the X server) works and kills it. I would have
attached my Xorg log but it seems to have moved somewhere else, I don't
see it in Hardy...

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion

2008-01-10 Thread HDave
I have a Dell XPS M1210 laptop with an nVidia Geforce Go 7400 GPU
running the restricted drivers on Gutsy.

I have been running Gutsy for a couple months now, and have been
experiencing freezes about every 2 hour during heavy usage. After
significant experimentation with different applications turned on and
off I can unequivocally say that the problem is compiz fusion. I have
run all this week with no compiz fusion and no freezes. If I enabled
compiz fusion I will freeze within 2 hours of use. Once frozen neither
ctrl-alt-backspace, not the "RSEIUB" trick has any effect, so there is
not syslog entry I can show.

Well, I've wondered if it was the nVidia driver, but shouldn't the
problem persist after turning off compiz? The nvidia-glx-new driver
works perfectly as long as compiz is turned off, and I also had the same
problems on Feisty; bug 145112 says that the driver problem didn't exist
in Feisty.

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion

2007-12-04 Thread Jonathan
I also have a freezing problem with compiz. The only difference for me
is that it usually (but not always) recovers in about 15 seconds. I
don't have any problems if I turn off compiz by running "metacity
--replace".

Here's my hardware:

HP Pavilion dv9428nr laptop
nVidia 6150 graphics
AMD X2 TL-64 (2.2GHz) processor
2 Gigs of Ram - the problem can't be caused here

I have tried using special bootup parameters. Using "noapic noirqdebug"
seems to cut down on the frequency of the issue somewhat, but not
enough. It still does it every 5 minutes or so.

I wonder why the importance hasn't been decided on this bug. It seems
pretty bad to me! Compiz makes my computer almost unusable.

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion

2007-11-23 Thread Greg Bognar
I used to have the freeze when gnome-screensaver was running (not only
after suspend). I thought it was a problem with gnome-screensaver or
xserver-xorg-video-intel (reported as Bug #160309). This morning I
updated compiz, and now the system freezes each time it is idle for a
few minutes (independently of the screensaver). I have a Dell Inspiron
1420 with the intel driver.

I do think including compiz in gutsy was premature.

Ok
I had 3 freeze in a row for less than 10 mins
In the first one , every programs I had to run were open (amarok , gaim , skype
, firefox , wingide , zend studio , acrobat reader )
The second and 3rd , only the gaim with compiz

I observed in some incoming messages from gaim , I have the freeze
Maybe some plugins in gaim needs to do something that causes the crash

In the other situations that I had 24 hours stable , I had gaim with no
incoming messages , but lots of java/python/native programs running

System specs:
Centrino 1.6
1GB RAM
External USB HDD attached
GC : intel 915GM

Kernel : 2.6.22-14-386

I have gutsy , but manually installed these packages from feisty repos :
x11-common 1:7.2-0ubuntu11
xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.2-0ubuntu11
xorg 1:7.2-0ubuntu11
xserver-xorg 1:7.2-0ubuntu11
xserver-xorg-video-all 1:7.2-0ubuntu11

I hope these informations help

Okay, forget what I said. Xorg froze up again. I was able to use the
system all day without a problem. When it finally froze up again I had
just clicked a link in Firefox. The page didn't start to load, X froze,
mouse cursor still moved.

Through a serial console I was able to see Xorg running at 100%. Was
able to kill it but then it would only come back in safe mode.
Networking stopped working as well, although ifconfig showed everything
normal.

These showed up in syslog at the time of the crash:

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion

2007-11-12 Thread snakesqzns
I can confirm this issue with the following hardware:

Gutsy 64 bit
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200
Asus M2N-E
2 Gigs DDR
nVidia GeForce 7300 SE

I tried several different version of the nvidia drivers but still had
lockups. When this happens CPU usage hits 100%, sometimes the mouse
cursor can be moved, and CRTL+ALT+BKSPC, CRTL+ATL+DEL, etc do nothing.

Since setting System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects to None
the problem seems to have gone away.

2007-11-08 Thread LisuLisu
well, after last update of compiz and awn the problem seems to have
dissapeared-instead compiz crashes (for example when closing a window
with a rightclick on it's awn icon)

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion

2007-10-26 Thread Lodestone
I have this issue as well. Acer Aspire 5570z -- I ran beryl in feisty
perfectly fine, but since upgrading I have this issue several times per
day, with nothing to speak of in the logs. I can ssh in from another
machine and kill off X, gdm, compiz, etc. but I cannot get the actual
display to respond again. I can provide logs if needed.

well' it happens for me during normal runtime,no suspending, etc.
There were few times, when even the cursor wouldn't move.. and the Fn+F7 or
Fn+Arrowup work.

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion

2007-10-23 Thread Johan Mårtenson
This happens for me under Gutsy when I unlock the computer after suspend
to ram. The gnome-screensaver dialog shows up and I can unlock it okay
but after that the screen is just black and only the mouse works. Caps
lock, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and SysRq don't work. This is on an X40 with
an 855GM video card. If I run metacity instead it all works okay.

Setting the package to compiz since it only occurs when compiz is
active.
