Spoke too soon. System is now sometimes useless again after resume, typically when lots of apps are open. [Bug 211153] Re: [Hardy] High system load coming out of suspend and hibernate
This bug typically makes my system unusable for 30 minutes after resume, I end up having to (slowly) kill all open apps to stop them all swapping out. Firefox is the biggest problem. Disabling swap did nothing, and I can't kill gnome-power-manager because then suspend is no longer there on the shutdown menu. [Bug 211153] Re: [Hardy] High system load coming out of suspend and hibernate
I think this time I've found out some interesting news! First of all: ignore everything I've said before, suggesting some peace of software being the culprit. Now I have found out what piece of software _really_ is responsible for the unusable system state, after waking up from suspend: gnome-power-manager! Now I am able to reproduce the lagging whenever I want: Just go into standby with gnome-power-manager running in your systray, and wake your laptop _without_ the power cord connected. The result will be (at least in my case) a lagging system. When waking up still being connected to the power cord everything is fine (that's why I have falsely thought that something else was making trouble). Only when I come back from suspend, just running on battery it's messed up. When I _disable_ ( by which I mean #killall gnome-power-manager) the power manager and go to suspend, it works just as it should. Running only on battery or not, it just works. I suspect that the power-manager detects the state that we are running on battery and changes some acpi(?) settings which don't do too well on my system. But I don't know which at this moment. So please try going to suspend/hibernate with your power cord connected and only running on battery, first without the power-manager running in the background, and then with the manager turned on. (turn it of: killall gnome-power-manager; turn it on gnome-power- manager, just in a terminal). I hope someone can figure something out with this. I bet it's just a number that has to be changed somewhere ;). I also see this problem on a fairly new Dell Latitude D630 with 9.04. I was previously using 8.10 on the same system without any problems, but since upgrading to 9.04, I see very high load averages and the system becomes unusable slow after suspending. it does seem to be somehow related to how much memory is in use - I sometimes have a fairly big VMware image running (about 1.2gb of ram for VMware on a 2gb laptop), and the problem seems worse when the VMware image is running. [Bug 211153] Re: [Hardy] High system load coming out of suspend and hibernate
The usual behavior I have is - go to stand by/ suspend - wake up: load of 20+ I disabled the firewall with Gufw 0.20.7. then, - go to stand by/ suspend - wake up: load fine, system is not thrashing Enabled the firewall again and after another stand by cycle the system is behaving fine. I know this might be just happening in my case, and that I don't know where to look at exactly, but this is what helps me to solve the problem. I just hope someone reads this post and can get an idea what is going on my side. So @ Bob Manners: could you try this also, or are you not using ufw? Turning off swap helped once to stop my system ending up in a heavy workload of 20+ plus, but not anymore since. Turning off ufw did the trick on my side i suppose. -- [Hardy] High system load coming out of suspend and hibernate https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211153 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 211153] Re: [Hardy] High system load coming out of suspend and hibernate
@Bob Manners Greenbear: I'm not using ufw or kde. I think that this is not trashing as usually defined, that is moving pages from swap to memory and back. The reason is that the problem happens with either swap on of off. With swap off the problem is less frequent, but there are other problems of performance and stability when almost all memory is used up so I can't recommend turning swap off unless a lot of RAM is available. If it's not the swap and it's not any process doing IO to the disk, a good candidate is the kernel itself and I'd point out the file system. I'm using ext3. Maybe it gets somewhat confused by the suspend and starts playing back the log or reading in again the buffer cache. Who knows? This bug is still unassigned. [Bug 211153] Re: [Hardy] High system load coming out of suspend and hibernate
I am seeing very similar issues with 09.04 (and I believe I also had problems under 08.10). In my case I see episodes of very high load average and intense disk thrashing, which usually lead to a functional lock-up of the system. I am unable to change virtual terminals, to move the mouse pointer, to kill X with ctrl-alt-bksp, or even to ssh in from another system (times out during the negotiation). The only solution is to force a semi- orderly shutdown using magic-sysrq key sequences. Once I kill all processes using magic-sysrq, the thrashing stops. When this occurs, on the odd occasion I have been able to kill X, sanity is restored and the thrashing stops. I believe that one of my X apps is triggering this bad behaviour - most likely part of KDE 4.2, or perhaps the Intel X server itself. Both KDE4 and the Intel X server are seeing a lot of active development, so some regressions are to be expected. My hardware is an HP Pavilion 1680ea (Core Duo, 2GB RAM). I have no swap configured. (I have tried configuring swap, and it doesn't appear to solve my issue.) What could be causing this crazy disk I/O? A typical scenario is as follows - I am running a KDE4 session, machine is fairly freshly booted (10 mins uptime), I have Firefox open with one tab (no fancy content). Memory use, excluding cache, is 400MB used out of 2GB physical (as shown by htop). I open some other app like Thunderbird or Okular and the load average spikes to 10 or so and the disk starts thrashing. I have observed htop and iotop while this is going on. htop does not show memory exhaustion - memory use maybe peaks at 600MB or 800MB before everything becomes so unresponsive that htop no longer updates. iotop does not show excess disk i/o from any particular process. I have no swap configured, so the I/O can't be swapping per se. I don't believe it is a storm of application reads or writes (iotop would show this). Could it be the system frantically demand paging in executables / libs? Maybe memory got suddenly exhausted before htop could show it? (Can anything allocate 1.5GB in a second or so, I wonder?) I am not sure what information to provide really. Debugging this is driving me crazy (I've been trying for a while). I can't seem to instrument the problem in order to work out what is going on when it all comes unravelled. b...@gecko2:/var/log$ uname -a Linux gecko2 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux I have attached the output of lspci -vvxx ** Attachment added: lspci -vvxx output http://launchpadlibrarian.net/25866482/lspci.txt -- [Hardy] High system load coming out of suspend and hibernate https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211153 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 211153] Re: [Hardy] High system load coming out of suspend and hibernate
To follow up on my own posting, I wonder if I am running out of low memory, even though plenty of high memory is available. Running just my usual desktop basics of Thunderbird + Firefox on KDE4, free -lm shows: b...@gecko2:/var/log$ free -lm total used free sharedbuffers cached Mem: 2004 1956 47 0 79 1375 Low: 849803 46 High: 1154 1152 1 -/+ buffers/cache:501 1502 Swap:0 0 0 So high mem is completely full, but 1501MB can be evicted as it is cache. Low mem has only 46MB free and nothing can be evicted there. Starting another couple of apps pushes me over the edge and low memory is exhausted. I wonder how I can mitigate this? [Bug 211153] Re: [Hardy] High system load coming out of suspend and hibernate
I've got the same problem in ubuntu 8.10 with both suspend and hibernate. As a workaround I close all applications but the terminal and sync before suspending. In this way I get out of resume about 3 times out of 4 and at least it saves me about 2 minutes of boot time. However sometimes the system is terribly slow after resuming and the disk spins restlessly as if it is trying to read/write to the disk (that's why I sync before suspending). When that happens I shutdown and restart: I get a usable system in less time than waiting for it to fix itself, which eventually does (from 5 minutes to... probably a very long time) I tried the latest release of Ubuntu 9.04 with a live cd. I suspended it but it failed to resume: the power led lit, the cd spinned up, the fan started, the volume off led lit but the screen stayed black and I had to force a shutdown with the power button. It seems that things got worse. As it is a live cd I don't know if I can produce a log file. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers.
