2012-04-14 Thread Bernhard Reiter
This has been working OOTB with no further issues for a long time now,
so I'm pretty certain it's fine to close this bug.

[Bug 256629] Re: wireless network does not work on Sony VAIO SR19VN [Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100]

2012-04-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Joris Bierkens, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Hardy desktop reached EOL on May 12, 2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue on a supported release? If
so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD
images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a
supported release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal).
It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to
this report.

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

** Description changed:

  Wireless does not work.
Wireless led is on (but it seems this led also controls bluetooth, so maybe
wifi is actually turned off).

Tried ndiswrapper on sony atheros driver downloaded from
  http://support.vaio.sony.nl. Followed instructions from
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=9454

I think modprobe did not succeed, I didn't find a message like ndiswrapper:
using irq 11 on dmesg | tail, but did read
  ndiswrapper version ... loaded (preempt=yes,smp=no)

[Bug 256629] Re: wireless network does not work on Sony VAIO SR19VN [Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100]

2009-01-15 Thread Aavery
I have something that may be related. I don't remember having boot
issues prior to enabling the nvidia 177 driver but I frequently have
them now where iwlagn appears to cause a kernel panic and boot freezes
and caps lock blinks.

have you had any problems like that? let me know if you want more info.

2008-11-22 Thread Bernhard Reiter
Strangely, sometimes wifi just doesn't work after booting. I still
suspect this is caused by some collision with nvidia drivers v177 -- I
think it doesn't ever happen if I deactivate them. I'm attaching dmesg

2008-11-03 Thread Joris Bierkens
Did not try linux-backports-modules.
I don't know if Intrepid / kernel 2.6.27 was supposed to correct this bug, but
it didn't work for me.

However I did follow the steps on
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/LaptopTestingTeam/SonyVGN-SR19VN , which worked for me.
Wireless is up and running now.

Remark: Since I'm using kernel 2.6.24 I had to download compat-wireless-
old.tar.bz2 from http://linuxwireless.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/

2008-10-26 Thread Leann Ogasawara
@Joris, you may want to try installing linux-backports-modules as it
most recently pulled in an updated version of the compat-wireless stack:

https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-backports-modules-2.6.27

linux-backports-modules-2.6.27 (2.6.27-7.3) intrepid; urgency=low

  [Tim Gardner]

  * Added iwlwifi firmware
  * Added the upstream compat-wireless-2.6 tree.
  * Updated compat-wireless to wireless-testing tag master-2008-10-14
  * Set CONFIG_WIRELESS_OLD_REGULATORY=y by default.

[Bug 256629] Re: wireless network does not work on Sony VAIO SR19VN [Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100]

2008-10-18 Thread Rewben
Seems I have pretty much the same problem as inflamestory. I don't have
the computer in question near by, so I'll have to add information later.
I had an intrepid RC installed earlier and also got the Radio disabled
by hw kill switch. All the modules are loaded and all seems fine
though. Then I lost patience and installed Mandriva 2009 B2 and there
the WLAN worked great without having to do anything.

Now to the weird part; I downloaded Kubuntu 8.10 Beta and booted it in
Live mode, and found out the WLAN worked great. I then installed Kubuntu
on harddrive, and found that the problem came back.

Seems weird it works in Live mode, but not when it's installed.

Well, can add the dmesg.log and more info about the system and kernel
version later.

2008-10-18 Thread inflamestory
In fact after posting a bug to the kernel bugzilla, I've followed the advice of
a kernel dev who ask me if it work under windows. As I've formated my hard disk
before giving a single boot to vista I've had to install XP and lenovo tools
for acpi and hotkeys, and guess what, it works! Since I've tried the shortcut
under windows my wireless card still on.
So my my problem wasn't realy the same, good luck!

Attached you find the dmesg output.
(I turned on the wireless switch after KDE had finished loading.)
Perhaps it just amounts to installing the right firmware? However the
restricted drivers program (now called hardware drivers) does not
list my wireless card, and i don't know how to do this from the
command line.

Regards, Joris

Thanks for testing and the updates guys.

Bernhard - would you be willing to maybe test with an Alpha5 LiveCD when
it's finally released (seems to be delayed at the moment - hopefully by
today it will come out). If it still fails to work can you attach your
dmesg output? Thanks.

I am currently running same kernel but 32bit:

in the same acer model and wireless card is working fine. I cand turn on/off
wireless device with wlan button.
Maybe is the 64bit kernel problem?

[Bug 256629] Re: wireless network does not work on Sony VAIO SR19VN [Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100]

2008-08-28 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please
open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the
2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please
specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26
kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Same problem here with an Acer Aspire 5930G. Still no success with
intrepid alpha4, which runs (uname -a):

Linux razor 2.6.26-5-generic #1 SMP Sun Aug 10 20:28:44 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux

This laptop has a dedicated wifi button with a LED, which won't turn on when
the button's pressed.
It would be really great to be able to run wifi for Centrino 2 notebooks out of
the box with the upcoming Intrepid release!
