Joe - interesting. Though what you're doing is solving the problem by downloading ALL attachments. (In reply to Joe Smith from comment #140) > The original problem is still present in TB 5.0. Just as is the one in > https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=439731 (reloading of read > messages). Actually, it seems to have been rather a user error in my case. :) The problem occured when I had limited the size of e-mails to be downloaded to 100kB. That was the case ever since I started using TB almost a year ago. So that those large e-mails (and also their attachments) were downloaded each time the e-mail was opened or the attachments saved. After disabling of the mail size limit in account options the problem seems to be gone. TB then downloaded all the previously too large e-mails. It now still shows "loading" for a short time when a large e-mail is opened, but that seems to be loading from hard disk (which goes very busy during that time) while the network connection is idle. I gueass that rather short loading time now is probably a result of the compression I have activated in TB for the e-mail files, and the subsequent need to decompress when opening an e-mail. So, there seems to be no issue for me after all. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275471 Title: mozilla attachments are dowloaded multiple times To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/thunderbird/+bug/275471/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 275471]
Five (5!) years later, in Thunderbird version 5.0, it is still having this most annoying bug. Mail with attachments takes forever to open, then, when you click on the attachment to open it, apparently the download starts afresh. Thunderbird has always done this, on all 4 computers in our house, for ALL IMAP accounts.
If you think about it, this bug and the way it is dealt with by the developers is exemplary for the product. It's "major updates" are minor patches. Who notices the heralded new account wizard as an exising user? Nobody. Who has problems with inline attachments? Everybody, since version 0.01 of the product. So let's develop a new account wizard and mark the inline attachments bug as "RESOLVED INVALID". Similarly, all the other issues and feature requests I invested time and effort in on this forum have not been seen as relevant by the developers. (E.g. the fact that entering and especially copy-pasting or cutting multiple email addresses from e.g. the To: field is so ridiculously cumbersome; the fact that the search engine introduced in TB3 is incredibly slow; the fact that properly layouting HTML emails is really a pain; the ugly and inconvenient placement of buttons in the preview pane header; the fact that only new email composition does not happen in a tab; ...) I've started contributing bugs and feature requests around version 1.x. We're now at version 5, five years later at least, and most major opportunities for improvement have not been addressed. Thunderbird as a consequence still is an immature product, and given how the developers prioritize their coding efforts, I'm sure version 8 will give us the 5th major GUI overhaul and a spectacular New Account Wizard... and it will still reload IMAP attachments every time you select an email. I hate to say it as a definite non-fanboy of Apple, but if the TB developers would take a short look at Apple Mail (even the one in OS X 10.6), they'd notice everything that is wrong with TB. If Apple can do it, then it must not be too difficult to write a simple yet functional email program.
More info: I set up an entirely empty IMAP account in thunderbird and moved the 1MB and 6MB files to it. I set this up for offline mode and ran the 'Download Now' to force the offline sync. THIS WORKED! The 6MB file is now loaded instantly and available when offline. I can save the attachment to my local disk and it doesn't download off the server. So we can break down the problem into: 1. Normal cache not working - consensus is this seems to be broken generally (separate bug?) 2. Offline files sync broken for large mailboxes - seems to work on small mailboxes. Doing a 'sync now' on a large mailbox (100,000 emails, 100 folders, selected for offline use 10 folders, 10,000 emails) doesn't seem to actually work - perhaps some timeout in effect? 3. Cache -> Offline files - why on earth does TB not put out to offline files as it downloads email? Why is Offline files sync a separate process? Surely it makes sense to update the offline files storage from Cache so there is still a single download. Are there open bugs for the above already? If not, and if people can replicate, we should open them. I get the feeling putting all this effort into a 'RESOLVED INVALID' bug may be falling of deaf ears.

(In reply to comment #146) > rsx11m - ah a 4MB limit! Well that explains my behaviour but my findings That's the previous limit of the *memory* cache, which caused issues in the past. The disk cache has a default limit of 50MB, and as David just stated, the offline store doesn't have any pre-set limit. It only goes into effect though if and when the message and/or its attachments are actually synchronized, until then you have to rely on the disk and/or memory cache (which, as stated, is somewhat broken).
There's no limit to the offline file store cache, so if the message is in the offline file store, saving attachments should just use the offline file store. You can tell if the message is in the offline store by going offline (file menu, offline, work offline) and then clicking on the message. If we tell you the message body has not been downloaded, then it's not in the offline store. The disk and memory cache complicate this quite a bit. Also, simply clicking on a message with a large external attachment should not end up with it getting put in the offline store. [Bug 275471]
I can confirm that further to my report in Comment 142 this particular folder *IS* set to offline mode with "Select this folder for offline use" ticked. Interesting development: 1. Created new TEST subfolder (also marked for offline use) 2. Move EmailA (1MB attachment) 3. Run above test on EmailA - no redownloading. 4. Move EmailB (6MB attachment) 5. Run above test - (try saving, click off email then back on etc) - attachment redownloaded each time. Conclusion - is there some kind of caching/offline limit set? What doesn't make any sense is I have 'Dont download messages larger than 50KB' ticked in my 'Synchronisation and Storage' settings for this account. Presumably this is being entirely ignored as 1MB > 50KB. Unless the bug is that the code thinks 50KB is actually 5000KB...trying this now with settings set to 5KB... Nope - still wont' work for 6MB attachment but fine for 1MB one. Also - when I click 'go offline' all the 1MB emails (body and attachments) are available offline. The 6MB email has no content at all - "The body of this message has not been downloaded from the server for reading offline...". For some reason a 6MB attachment is being entirely left on the server - no use of offline file space. SECOND TEST - Created new subfolder with 'use offline' switched off. Testing will TB use cache? Result - identical behaviour. The 1MB file is cached. The 6MB file is redownloaded each time. Offline storage vs Cached makes no difference. Hope this is useful feedback.

(In reply to comment #142) The memory cache should be large enough now after bug 629247 removed the 4MB limit, but it's still a problem with caching of IMAP parts not working properly. I've seen 0-size attachments showing up on the 5.0 branch resembling on-demand attachments, with a "busy" indication in the status bar when viewing such a message suggesting an incomplete download of the MIME part. It's not clear to me if that's part of bug 629738 or a new problem now, somewhat hard to reproduce. (In reply to comment #143) Attachments should only be downloaded in offline mode if they haven't been synchronized yet. And morer specifically, if a folder is set to offline mode, then the emails/bodies/attachments should be stored in the offline store, NOT the cache. I can also confirm that TB5 still redownloads attachments over and over again in folders set to offline mode - first, when you click/select the message, then again if you choose to 'Save As' the attachment, then again if you click a different message then go back to the message with the aqttachment. I can confirm this bug is still present in the latest Thunderbird 5.0 relese to date. 1. First open a new email with 6MB attachment - 2. Notice long download, no message body until complete. (either blank or previously selected message body often still visible). 3. Right click attachment - save as - long download, progress bar visible and the attachment is re-downloaded from the IMAP server. 4. Click on a different email. 5. Click back on the 6MB attachment email again. 6. Repeat 2-5 Problems / Correct Behaviour: 1. Attachments should not download before the body. 2. Large attachments (as selected) should (optionally) only download when requested. 3. Attachments should be retained locally 4. When saving a downloaded attachment the local copy should be saved ~instantly. 5. When reselecting an email with an attachment, it should use the local attachment copy. *In summary - an attachment should in ALL CASES be downloaded ONLY ONCE.* However the backend is implemented, this is what the user should experience. Since my original post I have upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04. After reading your comment, I went back to TB on my machine, went into the config editor and set browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl back to false. I really don't know why that made a difference before when I was using Ubuntu 7.10 but I swear it did. There was one huge jpg file that I was testing it on at the time. But in any case, when I set that value back to false my download problem does not come back. So I am thinking they fixed the problem it in 8.10 or 9.04 somehow. Or maybe its the TB vesion you are using. I tried this on Windows XP too and found the same result: the SSL content is cached as it should be (with and without setting browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl to true) . Both my TB versions are 2.0.0.21. PS: this is possibly unrelated, but there was another thing that upgrading fixed. For some reason in Ubuntu 7.10, there were some regular expressions that wouldn't work in the gnome-search utility. I tore apart it's source code and wasted a huge amount of time searching for fixes and trying to fix the problem myself. But it magically worked in Ubuntu 9.04. -- mozilla attachments are dowloaded multiple times https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275471 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@jplotkin: Good attempt, but I enabled the setting, restarted tb and still everytime I open a message with say a 6mb attachment, it downloads it anew. Then, if I want to save it, I have to download it again... I increased the size limit of saving for offline use from 1024 kb to 10240 kb to no avail - now after synchronization for offline use, going offline then back online I can retrieve a cached version of the message without having to re-download it. [Bug 275471] Re: mozilla attachments are dowloaded multiple times
Hello, I just found this post in google and I will admit I have not looked into the messages here in great detail. So what I am about to say may already be well known to other people. Anyway, I ran into an instance of the above problem; in particular, a client sent me three .mov files totaling 15Mb. I clicked the message once, but it did not appear at once. So I opened it into a separate window. After finally saving the attachments, I closed the window, did some things with the video files, then went back to the message to reply. At this point in time it started downloading the whole message with attachments again! So rather than punching a hole in my LCD monitor I decided to get to the bottom of this problem, because I have recommended Thunderbird to so many people and they would hate me if they were ever as frustrated as I was because of Thunderbird. So I went though this post and a few others, then eventually got to searching through the advanced configuration editor and found this setting: browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl Then it clicked, we are both using SSL. The value here defaults to false for SSL and true for non SSL, which makes sense to some extent; it is more secure to not cache the data locally. So I set that to true and its like difference between walking on sand vs. walking on concrete! -Jeff P. -- mozilla attachments are dowloaded multiple times https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275471 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 275471] Re: mozilla attachments are dowloaded multiple times
It looks that there could be a couple of aspects to this problem: Firstly, perhaps the default value of mail.server.default.mime_parts_on_demand should be set to True, rather than False, when Thunderbird is first installed. Secondly, it appears then when for whatever reason parts are pre-loaded, they should be cached somehow, so that they don't need to be downloaded a second time. Finally, it's not clear what part the Bayesian spam filter is playing in all this: according to the Mozilla bug report, it looks as thought perhaps sometimes the spam filter wants to download the entire message so that it can run its algorithm on the message+attachments.

To circumlocute: When you open a message with a large attachment, it requires a long delay and it appears that Thunderbird downloads the entire message including attachment, even if the attachment is not actually being rendered to screen (eg a file attachment of some sort). Then, when the file attachment is double-clicked, Thunderbird then opens a 'Downloads' dialog and again starts to download the attachment. Not clear if this is a limitation of IMAP or something silly that Thunderbird is doing with caching or something like that. But it's very annoying when your IMAP provider only permits something like 50 kB or less as the download rate, or worse, if you are on a low bandwidth line, because reading the text part of the message still requires the whole message download (i.e. you might as well be using POP3!) ** Changed in: thunderbird (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- mozilla attachments are dowloaded multiple times https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275471 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunderbird scenario. open thunderbird and a message (new or old, doesnt matter) with a big attachment, lets say a .jpg that is 2Mb. and for the sake of argument lets also say it is the first new message of your day. So TBird automatically focuses on the first message, and you can watch the progress bar as it loads the message some time later, the load is done. hey, the image has a funny resolution in this view, so i double-click on the message and pop up a message window. AND THEN THE MESSAGE WINDOW DOWNLOADS THE oh-so-fargin- lovely 2Mb AGAIN. no, this is not all. No, TBird can be made to DL that sucker in all sorts of odd ways. And even if they were, for what fraction of hte people would they be like that? this is probably not a "bug" per se; but my bet is a lot of people would like to download that 2Mb just once. b.t.w., in this scenario I have an IMAP-SSL connection to my server. ubuntu 8.04 hardy thunderbird: Installed: 2.0.0.16+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 Candidate: 2.0.0.17+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 Version table: 2.0.0.17+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 0 500 http://mirror.pacific.net.au hardy-security/main Packages *** 2.0.0.16+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 0 500 http://mirror.pacific.net.au hardy-updates/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 2.0.0.12+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://mirror.pacific.net.au hardy/main Packages ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Sun Sep 28 21:21:28 2008 Dependencies: DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04 NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx Package: mozilla-thunderbird None [modified: /var/lib/dpkg/info/mozilla-thunderbird.list] PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: thunderbird Uname: Linux 2.6.24-19-generic i686 ** Affects: thunderbird (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug -- mozilla attachments are dowloaded multiple times https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275471 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
