[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB
No, all that completely makes sense. In fact, I haven't had to bother with my xorg.conf file in a while, so I don't know when this particular regression (if that's what it is) occurred. Also, it appears that I do not actually need to include the information concerning my Nvidia card in xorg.conf, as the original problematic file did not include that info, and I was having no trouble whatsoever with the graphical aspect of X. So apparently xorg.conf does indeed have better hot-pluggable device support. So in short, I don't know why I suddenly need to put in the input device sections now, but it seems to have fixed my particular problem. -- 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281737 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB
Quoting from http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta#X.Org%207.4 X.Org 7.4, the latest stable version of X.Org, is available in Intrepid. This release brings much better support for hot-pluggable input devices such as tablets, keyboards, and mice. At the same time this will allow the great majority of users to run without a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. A new failsafe X is introduced, to give better tools for troubleshooting X startup failures. So, my understanding of this is that xorg.conf as a whole is largely redundant now, apart from some obscure configurations... So, Nick Mole, could it be that the problem was caused because you removed only the input sections from xorg.conf, instead of the whole file? P.S. [Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB
Vincent, the HP Pavilion laptops don't offer an option to disable legacy USB in the BIOS. I'm sure there are others (models, brands etc) that are the same. This would be a problem. My issue has since gone away with the Sunday AM updates to KDE4. Even the tray icons no longer fade away after a few minutes. My question or thoughts are surrounding the nVidia chips or KDE4 now. Nick posted above that his was faulty only under X and since most of us with this issue are running nVidia chipsets. My install was a fresh Kubuntu 8.10 install. Then I ran the updates (no kernel update) with no issues. After a reboot, updated the kernel. USB issue started. Reboot - no mouse, install nVidia driver - reboot, mouse worked but stopped working after a few minutes. Reboot, no change. I left the system alone except to boot into the 2.6.27-4 kernel which provided full functionality. On Sunday I read Dimitrios's request and responded accordingly. Few hours later I installed the updates that were available Sunday morning. I've had no issues since these updates were applied. They were mostly KDE4 updates. I see where Gnome users (assuming here) are also affected which I know makes my pointing to KDE4 void. For some reason, the HP Pavilion laptop model has suffered the most under Linux regardless of distro and version compared to other makes/models. Unsure why but that's not for here. -- 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281737 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB
I suffer from this bug with an experimental Debian kernel (package linux-image-2.6.27-rc9-amd64, version 2.6.27~rc9-1~experimental.1~snapshot.12290). In fact, it seems that starting from 2.6.27-rc5, the kernel linux does not manage USB devices run by the BIOS anymore in legacy mode. I found some doc here: http://198.182.196.72/kernel/v2.6/27-rc5/Documentation/x86/i386/usb- legacy-support.txt even if it also apply to x86_64 for me. Disabling legacy USB support in the BIOS solve the problem for me. Of cause, this means that my external (USB) keyboard cannot be used to configure the BIOS or to change Grub/Lilo options anymore. It is not a problem for me but it can be the case for other people... [Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB
Also this bug has a random period of occurrence. For example now i work with the new kernel and every usb device works fine even if plug and unplug. Other times when i boot with the new kernel some devices if connected(like usb media, or usb flash disk) work fine but mouse doesnt. Now if one of these devices is disconnected then there is no way you can get it back. Of course no chance for the mouse unless you restart and you be lucky with the new restart. Could it be that this is a bug due to falty upgrade of ubuntu? Maybe some weird corruption. In my case when i upgraded there was a problem with the package rarian- compat(probably faulty download). This led to installation failure of packages that depend on it suchs zenity, gdm and many gnome packages for that matter(found by apt-cache depends). Gnome was unable to load. In my case i just loaded with terminal and i --purged the package rarian- compat that was the one i was getting errors and issued an upgrade which led to downloading again the package and finalize the rest of the installation. Im saying this in case other users had problems with upgrade maybe this is what's causing it. -- 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281737 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
