[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB

2008-10-20 Thread Nick Mole
No, all that completely makes sense. In fact, I haven't had to bother
with my xorg.conf file in a while, so I don't know when this particular
regression (if that's what it is) occurred.

Also, it appears that I do not actually need to include the information
concerning my Nvidia card in xorg.conf, as the original problematic file
did not include that info, and I was having no trouble whatsoever with
the graphical aspect of X. So apparently xorg.conf does indeed have
better hot-pluggable device support. So in short, I don't know why I
suddenly need to put in the input device sections now, but it seems to
have fixed my particular problem.

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB

2008-10-19 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
Quoting from http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta#X.Org%207.4

X.Org 7.4, the latest stable version of X.Org, is available in Intrepid.
This release brings much better support for hot-pluggable input devices
such as tablets, keyboards, and mice. At the same time this will allow
the great majority of users to run without a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. A
new failsafe X is introduced, to give better tools for troubleshooting X
startup failures.

So, my understanding of this is that xorg.conf as a whole is largely
redundant now, apart from some obscure configurations... So, Nick Mole,
could it be that the problem was caused because you removed only the
input sections from xorg.conf, instead of the whole file?

P.S. I am only guessing here, correct me if I'm talking non-sense...

Ok... I'm back in gnome, typing on my USB keyboard (and using my usb
mouse). I found that if I put the keyboard and mouse information back
into xorg.conf, my usb devices became available from within X. I'm
attaching the xorg.conf file that's in use right now. Unless I'm
remembering incorrectly, isn't the entry of input devices into
xorg.conf deprecated?

Anyway, I added these two sections at the beginning of xorg

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Keyboard
Driver kbd
Option XkbRules xorg
Option XkbModel pc105
Option XkbLayout us
EndSection

Section InputDevice
Identifier Configured Mouse
Driver mouse
Option CorePointer
EndSection

and then I added this section at the end.

Section ServerLayout
Identifier Default Layout
Screen Default Screen
InputDevice Generic Keyboard
InputDevice Configured Mouse
EndSection

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB

2008-10-13 Thread old_salt
Vincent, the HP Pavilion laptops don't offer an option to disable legacy
USB in the BIOS. I'm sure there are others (models, brands etc) that are
the same. This would be a problem.

My issue has since gone away with the Sunday AM updates to KDE4. Even
the tray icons no longer fade away after a few minutes.

My question or thoughts are surrounding the nVidia chips or KDE4 now.
Nick posted above that his was faulty only under X and since most of us
with this issue are running nVidia chipsets. My install was a fresh
Kubuntu 8.10 install. Then I ran the updates (no kernel update) with no
issues. After a reboot, updated the kernel. USB issue started. Reboot -
no mouse, install nVidia driver - reboot, mouse worked but stopped
working after a few minutes. Reboot, no change.

I left the system alone except to boot into the 2.6.27-4 kernel which
provided full functionality. On Sunday I read Dimitrios's request and
responded accordingly. Few hours later I installed the updates that were
available Sunday morning. I've had no issues since these updates were
applied. They were mostly KDE4 updates. I see where Gnome users
(assuming here) are also affected which I know makes my pointing to KDE4
void.

For some reason, the HP Pavilion laptop model has suffered the most
under Linux regardless of distro and version compared to other
makes/models. Unsure why but that's not for here.

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB

2008-10-13 Thread Vincent Danjean
I suffer from this bug with an experimental Debian kernel (package
linux-image-2.6.27-rc9-amd64, version
2.6.27~rc9-1~experimental.1~snapshot.12290).

In fact, it seems that starting from 2.6.27-rc5, the kernel linux does
not manage USB devices run by the BIOS anymore in legacy mode. I found
some doc here:
http://198.182.196.72/kernel/v2.6/27-rc5/Documentation/x86/i386/usb-
legacy-support.txt even if it also apply to x86_64 for me.

Disabling legacy USB support in the BIOS solve the problem for me. Of
cause, this means that my external (USB) keyboard cannot be used to
configure the BIOS or to change Grub/Lilo options anymore. It is not a
problem for me but it can be the case for other people...

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB

2008-10-13 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
Also this bug has a random period of occurrence. For example now i work with
the new kernel and every usb device works fine even if plug and unplug.
Other times when i boot with the new kernel some devices if connected(like usb
media, or usb flash disk) work fine but mouse doesnt. Now if one of these
devices is disconnected then there is no way you can get it back. Of course no
chance for the mouse unless you restart and you be lucky with the new restart.

Could it be that this is a bug due to falty upgrade of ubuntu? Maybe
some weird corruption.

In my case when i upgraded there was a problem with the package rarian-
compat(probably faulty download). This led to installation failure of
packages that depend on it suchs zenity, gdm and many gnome packages for
that matter(found by apt-cache depends). Gnome was unable to load. In my
case i just loaded with terminal and i --purged the package rarian-
compat that was the one i was getting errors and issued an upgrade which
led to downloading again the package and finalize the rest of the
installation. Im saying this in case other users had problems with
upgrade maybe this is what's causing it.

Here's the text of this output.

Could this be tied to the nVidia driver considering the hardware is
nVidia?

I also noticed that this morning's updates really foobar'd the system. I
have yet to update the kernel but my USB quit working after I installed
Samba. Updated caused an automated reboot with a crash handler for the

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB

2008-10-12 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
I did an apt-get update and ugrade.
I wan on 2.6.19 and restarted to the new kernel. Every usb device in the system
worked perfectly. I kept a log of this.
The second time around when i restarted again the system every device didnt
worked.

The same thing happened in the morning too. At first i loaded the old
kernel because i wanted to work with mouse, then i restarted to the new
kernel and worked...after one reboot all got back to the old ways of no
usb working.

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB

2008-10-11 Thread Nick Mole
I seem to have the same problem... 2.6.27-7 appears to have broken usb
(at least on my box). I'm running ubuntu 8.10 on a 64 bit machine. I've
attached the logs that are generated under the rescue environment from
the install cd. If there are other ways of exporting logs that would be
pertinent to this situation, please let me know.
