I'm not sure, Java installed fine for me. The only issue I am having
now is my screen flickers and sometimes after Ubuntu boots up and I am
all logged in the menu gets corrupted. I did reinstall Ubuntu thinking
maybe it was the install but it wasn't.

then in that case do you still have the issue of licensing when installing
openjdk and openjre via k/ubuntu-restricted-extras. i use the openjdk and
openjre just fine without this issue. again these are also made by sun,
oracle now, and dont have the issue of having to accept the license.

2010-06-07 Thread ibmloveslinux
Yes, I indeed realize completely that there will always be a bug here
and there. That is even prevalent in my field of study. Now I don't
contribute as much as I should to the open source community as far as
software. But I do advertise and spread the word of Linux, and I do
defend Linux in every aspect. Almost to the point of it being a
religion. Now I am sorry about my being rude at speech before. Now I
would love to see pre-releases that have already been beta tested by
developers. I am sure there are plenty of people who would, but I do
realize that would be difficult. There may still be bugs even if done
this way, but I can at least state that the prevalence of bugs might
be lower. I can say this with certainty. I am not a proprietary type
person, however there is times where making money is needed. In my
field, you need to make money in order to keep at it. But lets just
resolve this. Pretend this all never happened.

[Bug 303609] Re: declining the license during installation causes an error

2010-06-07 Thread tristan8276
@ibmloveslinux

So, basically you're saying that it is inconvenient when bugs like this
arise. You would like it to be ironed out pre-release, in a beta
testing environment. The problem is that no matter how much you beta
test, there will always be problems that arise in the field. You say
you are an electrical engineer, but that you haven't contributed much to
the Open Source Community. That is unfortunate, because you may have a
lot to offer.

My point is that there will always be bugs, and we should all be
grateful that this forum of submitting, monitoring and working on bugs
submitted from the community exists.

My issue with you was your choice of language. If you like Closed
Source better, then by all means buy a mac or windows pc. I hear
Windows 7 may even be a good distro for a change.

The point of bugsquad and this forum in general is for finding
constructive ways to fix bugs. Foul language will NOT be permitted.

Also, I've installed and uninstalled java6 several times on my Lucid
machine several times, with no problems.

Re: [Bug 303609] Re: declining the license during installation causes an error

2010-06-07 Thread ibmloveslinux
No, Microsoft doesn't have much like launchpad, only thing Microsoft
has is send error report, which of course people barely ever click
send error. Me I don't have a problem, only that when I build
something I like to test it my self, not Alpha test but I mean run the
full gamut. This would include both software and hardware. Now I am
going to be honest I don't contribute to the Open Source community as
far as making software cause frankly it's not my speciality as I am a
electrical engineer. But case and point is, developers and
contributors should test there own product before fully distributing
it to the world. You need to think of it like this, many consumers
don't really know to much about development of software or hardware.
So with this in mind, when you have your consumer use a beta product
or for instance a "new updated" product and it crashes or has little
failures here and there, first thing they are going to think is it's
crap. Only cause they don't know that they the consumer are the beta
testers. Some software companies and developers are nice enough to
advertise "beta" which is helpful for those consumers. Now with ubuntu
and hect all open source operating systems, I do notice yes advertised
as a beta launch ect. However I did get some people to switch to
ubuntu, and out of the bunch yea issues evolved with there situation.
It might not be in control of canonical however, because of that
situation they switched back to there proprietary operating system
even though i would tell them hey, it's going to have a few kinks that
need to be ironed out. Now having a product that is beta tested fully
by the developer would help prevent having a person switch back to
what ever other operating system or software they were using before.
This is the whole point, to have the developer test there product
before distributing it, because if you have your consumer even at
times they know it's beta tested by them, they still will disagree
with the product, and what will happen is it may tarnish that
reputation of the company or group. Best example would be windows
vista, I don't use windows anymore I use strictly Linux. And have for
about 1-3 years now, I forget. I can say that from reading the numbers
that microsoft was pulling and from user reviews, that it sucked. And
it had made many people, switch to mac. Now, there you go. But problem
with vista was microsoft trying to make a operating system more
macish, by that the menus and the all of a sudden outbreak of media
softwares. Now thing with Linux based operating systems is it works
out the box. you install thats it, software is simple. It does have
it's up's and down's like anything sure. But thing with vista was, it
was developed in less then 2 quarters. And it's only alpha test that
was included was to see it startup, run a few applications, run some
cpu tests, memory test, just to make sure it didn't have memory dumps.
The rest was all consumer, and consumers tried the operating system
and bam crashes here crashes there, security wholes from all
directions. There was the problem making a product to fast, making
like another operating system, and most of all above all having this
product tested at the very minimum by the developers. That hurt
microsoft, and it especially shows since apple corp is now larger then
microsoft. Now to make Linux have a market would be based not on the
operating system. The OS is free no problem right. But there is free
software for it and all yippee all fine and dandy however the software
has it's limitations, if canonical and other holders of linux based
operating systems would have contracts drawn up with software
corporations and begin to develop software for linux based operating
systems and charge this would bring profit to the linux community.
That is how microsoft and apple make money. They don't make it off
there operating system they make it off there software they sell for
that operating system, and by the contracts drawn up by the software
corporations who make software for those operating systems. And within
those contracts are agreements that a certain percentage of sales
should go to apple or microsoft. This is the point behind how to make
linux have a market share. And a large one indeed. Thing with Linux
based operating systems, example ubuntu, you can install it and you
can do alot right from the install alone. By default, open office,
firefox, and so many more. You can't really do that with a microsoft
install. You need to spend money for the software for it. Think you
spend 200 for windows right, but you spend 1000 for photo shop, out of
that 1000 dollars microsoft might get 5-50% of that sale depends on
contract I don't know what it is cause im not within there sector.
This is the point.

2) You show me where Microsoft has anything like launchpad where the
general public can submit and help work on bug reports.

3) What is your problem?

2010-05-02 Thread GalloGlas
Guys... you're making this harder than it needs to be. CHILL OUT!

If you get the error just completely remove all sun java packages.
Then start over. The second time around it didn't ask me for a single
license agreement.

But what is clearly evident is that we are all rushing through installs
without reading everything and just clicky clicky clicky. STOP THAT!
This is linux, not windows.

If you use Firefox... don't forget to also select sun-java6-plugin.

K thnx bah

[Bug 303609] Re: declining the license during installation causes an error

2010-05-01 Thread David Finch
I would have accepted it if I could. In my case the only symptom was
that the installation had frozen with zero cpu or io activity, and I had
to kill something to resume it (it's been a year so I don't remember
details), and I got that problem. Then hours later, as I was shutting
the computer down, a borderless java license window flashed on the
screen then disappeared. It's like it connected to the wrong X session
to display its license, but I can't imagine what could have caused that
to happen.

2010-05-01 Thread tristan8276
I don't know if I'm understanding correctly, but it seems like this bug
happens when you try to install java without accepting the license. The
easiest workaround I can see is that if you don't want java, then don't
try to install it. If the bug were fixed, then you still would not be
able to install java without the license. Just as with anything else.

2010-05-01 Thread Dorian
And it broke apt-get, it say I have to launch "sudo apt-get install -f" because
cache is broken...
And when I refuse to install sun-java6-*, the cache stay broken... and if i
accept to install, but i don't accept the license it ask me to accept the
license in a infinite loop...
So I have install sun-java6-* and remove after ;)

[Bug 303609] Re: declining the license during installation causes an error

2010-04-30 Thread GalloGlas
I fixed my Java and it works fine in 10.04. It appears there are some
check boxes in the original install phase that need to be checked. If
you don't check them you can still hit next for some reason and it will
attempt to install but spit back an error.

Open package manager and search java. completely remove all green
boxes.

Once you've done that go back and select install java6 by sun.

There is an additional package that will not be automatically selected
as a dependency called "sun-java6-plugin" I selected that as well.
This package is the plugin to get Java to work properly in Firefux.

Hit apply. It then installed without popping up any boxes asking you to
agree to sell your soul or whatever is in those TOS things that no one
ever reads.

After you're done you can go here to test.
http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~matuszek/General/JavaVersionTests/JavaTests.html

You should see a bunch of boxes with 4 colors in it. If not.. Java did
not install correctly.

I just installed 9.10 64-bit, and I'm getting this error no matter how I
try to install Java, either directly by installing Java OR through

fails. I install Java and it just fails. I never have any opportunity to

So, have we decided if this is a problem with Sun's java package not
properly handling a decline of the Service Agreement, or a problem with
Ubuntu's Package Manager? It seems to me that the package is breaking
due to the question being asked half way through the installation
process. It should be asked before the Package Manager even touches it.

[Bug 303609] Re: declining the license during installation causes an error

2010-02-12 Thread bill walsh
I tried to install Java in Ubuntu using the instruction web pages.
Unfortunately Ubuntu is Debian based and doesn't include rpm and for some
reason won't load 'alien' so Java won't load manually into Ubuntu. Tried using
the Ubuntu download wizard but mised the 'accept terms' prompt, my bad. The
worse news is that now I have no way of installing Java.

I pressed the ok button (or whatever it is, sorry don't remember) on the
right, without ticking the box on the left. Because it causes an error
its hard to realise what went wrong.

Also I think the wording of the text with the checkbox should be a
statement rather than a question.
