[Bug 321578] Re: Toshiba satellite L350/L505 fan regulation problem in Ubuntu 8.10/Ubuntu 9.10

2011-05-10 Thread racitup
Also affects the Toshiba Satellite L350-235 on Ubuntu 11.04
The following workaround solved both the non-functional fn+F6/F7 Display
brightness keys and the auto-dim when going onto battery power, and seems to
have solved the fan-always-on problem too:

1. Install lm-sensors: sudo apt-get install lm-sensors
2. Run sensors-detect which will install the 'coretemp' module:
$ more /etc/modules
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with # are ignored.

3. Modify /etc/default/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux

4. Update grub: sudo update-grub

5. Reboot your machine

NOTE: The toshiba_acpi.ko kernel module will NOT load for this laptop
either, but it is not required.

[Bug 321578] Re: Toshiba satellite L350/L505 fan regulation problem in Ubuntu 8.10/Ubuntu 9.10

2011-04-05 Thread Zaher Gharibi
Hello,

It looks like I am not the only one who is suffering problems with ACPI
and overheating issues in Toshiba Laptops. Before I proceed with my
question, I would suggest everyone to keep away from Toshiba. This
Laptop is the worst I have ever seen. I had IBM ThinkPad for years and
tried many Linux distros on it and never had a single issue!

Well, I've got the Satellite M505-S4972 laptop and yesterday, I have
installed Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition. The fan is not working and I
tried many things but no luck! I cannot also change the brightness of my
LCD becaue Fn doesn't work.. I have updated the system and downloaded
all packages available but still have the same problem..

I have also tried to alter some of the parameters in the Grub file but
it didn't work for me!

I really liked Ubuntu and I want to stuck with it. Any help??

Thanks,

Zaher

2011-04-05 Thread Zaher Gharibi
Hello again,

After resuming from standby, the fan is working but keeps working even
if the temp is below 40 C. I tried adding acpi_osi=Linux in
/etc/default/grub and reboot but nothing happened. And the Fn buttons
are not working as well!

Any advice??

Hey Zaher,

The only thing that worked for me with the fan ( believe me I
looked ! ) was to put a 30 second delay in the grub boot menu, and leave
the rest of grub alone. Then do cold boots. This seems to allow the fan
to stabilize before ACPI takes over. I think I read somewhere about a
race condition.

In grub change the line that looks like this to :

GRUB_TIMEOUT=30

as for your Fn (brightness?) issue look here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1662130

There is a ton of stuff on the forums - you will see. I do not think
you will get much of a response here in Launchpad - the forums are a
better place to help you...

Regards

2010-07-10 Thread Tose Trpevski
Thanks :-), i read your posts on Linux Forums and i will use this for
my problems :

1. For CPU Fan and Fn keys :

first. sudo apt-get install sensors-applet
next. sudo sensors-detect

next. answer yes to everything.

exit then restart computer.

next. sudo gedit /etc/default/grub and then change

GRUB_CMLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash

to read

...quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux

next. sudo update-grub to update /boot/grub/grub.cfg

exit then restart computer

Then System/Admin/Services and disable ACPID power management and reboot

2. For touchpad :

edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Make a backup of the file, then:
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Find the touchpad section:

Section InputDevice
Identifier Synaptics Touchpad
Driver synaptics
Option SendCoreEvents true
Option Device /dev/psaux
Option Protocol auto-dev
Option HorizEdgeScroll0
Option MinSpeed 1.0
Option MaxSpeed 1.8
Option AccelFactor 0.3
Option MaxTapTime 0
EndSection

Please tell me if this solve my problems, i will also like to integrate
windows xp becouse i need Adobe CS5 and Cubase, FL studio :-S. If i
stuck somewhere i will install Windows 7.

2010-05-12 Thread Anakin Starkiller
If you're on Lucid, just install the proprietary driver by installing fglrx.
If you're on Karmic just install the ATI proprietary driver from their website.
(search for fglrx driver on google).
See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
Or you can just wait for the kernel =2.6.35 when the power management will be
implemented ;)
See http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=14913
This bug is NOT an ACPI bug (at least for the L505 Toshiba model) ;)

Thanks Anakin Starkiller for the info... I have since learned enough to
realize that I have an intel chipset with integrated graphics so the ATI
is actually not applicable to my situation. I was able to workaround
this issue by removing/unistalling ACPI, adding acpi_osi=Linux to the
grub menu list, and installing lm_sensors. Fans still dies sometimes
when resuming from suspend.

[Bug 321578] Re: Toshiba satellite L350/L505 fan regulation problem in Ubuntu 8.10/Ubuntu 9.10

2010-03-18 Thread cbecker78
Toshiba satellite L505, Hdry H20 BIOS, intell dual core CPU

Also seeing same issue as above.

(1) Default fan behavior is it will not come on unless I open the ubuntu
software center , then it comes on full blast and will not turn off.
Monitoring temperature is impossible.

(2) doing sudo apt-get install acpi allows temperature of CPUs to be
checked from command line, but fan will not come on no matter what after
that is installed. I just get to watch my processor temp creep up until
I panic around 70 C and restart with Windows 7 so the fan will come on
and cool it down.

(3) adding acpi_osi=Linux to /boot/grub/menu.lst on the appropriate
line (coresponding to the kernel I boot) AND haveing acpi installed will
start the fan on some low speed at cold boot, and it will stay on
continuously at that speed. However, the fan will turn off upon
hibernation, and not turn back on again after that unless the laptop is
restarted.

#3 seems to be best senario, but not adequate for CPU-intense activities

-Would love more information on the proprietary ATI bit by Anakin StarKiller.
Any chance you could provide a brief description somewhere for a new linux user
to follow?

2010-02-14 Thread paul
Is there anyone already having a solution for this? Iam able to reproduce this
issue. The fan is not spinning at all when using linux, the temperature is
readed out correctly. Its at normal usage, with just some internet serving
going up to 70C. Once the temperature raises to 80C, the fan spin up at full
RPM, however it doesnt spin down.
This is happening with a toshiba L350-168 laptop.

[Bug 321578] Re: Toshiba satellite L350/L505 fan regulation problem in Ubuntu 8.10/Ubuntu 9.10

2009-12-25 Thread schlauf
I have a Toshiba L350-D (AMD Athlon QL-60) whose fan starts to blow off
after some time on Ubuntu 9.10. Temperature readout works fine, but the
fan will never stop again.

This problem did NOT occur whilst running on Ubuntu 8.04. Any
suggestions?

Eventually, I've found that it was PowerPlay and not ACPI that was causing this
issuePowerPlay is used by ATI card to reduce consumption of graphic
cardsand with open source drivers, it's not implemented yet...so I've
installed proprietary drivers and now, the fan is running at normal speed and
the general temperature is even cooler...
Something positive : powerplay will be soon available with latest branch of
open source drivers ;)

Could this problem be related to power saving features of open source
radeon drivers ?

2009-11-01 Thread Anakin Starkiller
Ceyx Thanks, I've just tried this on my L505. I thought it was working
first...but then I've tried to run glxgears for a couple of time, and now the
fan is continuously running at max speed ...though the core temperature is
30°C...
By the way, acpitool still shows not available for Fan and Thermal info.

2009-10-31 Thread Ceyx
I too had this problem again immediately after upgrading to 9.10 Ubuntu,
on my Toshiba 300D

using acpi=force instead of acpi_osi=Linux in the menu.lst seems to
work fine !

Ciao
