I have the same problem on 12.04. Using XFCE. Skype uses 100% of one CPU all the time (have an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T), even when not calling or receiving calls. It just idles at 100%... It's possible to temporarily eliminate the delay in Skype by switching pulse's output during a call. I start the call, switch from my usb headset to the built-in speakers, then back to the headset. For the rest of the call things are good. Same here.CPU usage going through the roof. Temperature reaching critical levels while using skype and pulse audio. [Bug 362203] Re: Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec)
I think I have somewhat of a solution. I was able to get Skype to run perfectly fine, just as it did on Hardy. I set all options to pulse audio, then ran the following commands: sudo echo deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy restricted main multiverse universe /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins=1.0.15-1ubuntu3 libasound2=1.0.15-3ubuntu4 libpulse0=0.9.10-1ubuntu1 -d sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/lib* reboot . Unfortunately, this completely breaks every package manager on Ubuntu. Fixing the package managers will undo the changes, and can be done with this command: sudo apt-get install -f . . After returning to the normal Jaunty libraries, pulse appears to run perfectly fine with multiple applications running at the same time (tested Skype, Audacity, Flash plugin, Mplayer). The only problem I've noticed was that Pulse Audio test does not work correctly under: SystemPreferencesSound It gives this error: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat: Failed to connect: Connection refused -- Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/362203 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 362203] Re: Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec)
So, as I understood correctly, you are proposing we all quit using skype and wait until Karmic Koala is out? It's simply not gonna go. Pulseaudio breaks skype (and bunch of other apps) and should not be included (without _ANY_ integration testing it seems) in Ubuntu in the first place. Yes, I know, Pulse is The Right Thing and offers a bunch of great features but it breaks applications that many people need in everyday work. Most people use a very limited subset of functionality that a sound server offers - primarily software mixing and that can be achieved with plain ALSA (using dmix). As long as pulseaudio doesn't operate transparently enough for the legacy apps (yes, most of them broken and misusing ALSA, but that does change anything) to keep working, it NEEDS to be excluded from the stable Ubuntu release. So those workarounds are perfectly valid. On the side, the ONLY reason I choose Ubuntu over Debian for my laptop/desktop is the usually better support for 'everyday' apps. This bug is breaking that premise. -- Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/362203 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 362203] Re: Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec)
I hate this bug just as much as anybody else, but let's not forget this is a _bug report_ for _pulse audio_. It's not a forum, not necessarily a discussion thread, and not using pulse audio is a solution, but not a workaround. Having said that, I am also very interested in find out if there's any real workaround, so if anybody finds one - let us have it. DRM 'manages access' in the same way that jail 'manages freedom'. [Bug 362203] Re: Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec)
Yes, using pulseaudio with skype in 9.04 gives a leak of memory, but fortunately it is possible to avoid using pulseaudio with skype. First, I changed my sound settings (System-Preferences-Sound-Detault mixer tracks) to HDA Intel (Alsa mixer). Then in Skype I changed all three sound device options (sound in, sound out, ring) to HDA Intel. After that Skype works well without leak of memory. -- Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/362203 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thomas, to change the setting of sound in your computer you can use the main menu (usually on the top of screen) chose System, then Preferences, then Sound. In the window, which opens, in the bottom you will see Default mixer tracks. Change device to HDA Intel (Alsa mixer). Above this part in the same window you see Sound capture and ...test. Check if sound recording works well (press test and say something in microphone. You must here your voice playing back). Then open skype options, find sound devices and change sound in, sound out, ring to HDA Intel. [Bug 362203] Re: Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec)
Sorry, Martin, I agree, maybe it is not leak. I just see that when you start a skype call using pulseaudio, skype consumes more and more CPU memory with time and I think this finally results in audio delays. It seems like leak of memory, but I am not sure what is the real reason.
