2012-05-12 Thread Luca Steinke
I have the same problem on 12.04. Using XFCE. Skype uses 100% of one CPU all
the time (have an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T), even when not calling or receiving
calls. It just idles at 100%...
Can't even switch to another backend than PulseAudio.

[Bug 362203] Re: Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec)

2009-11-18 Thread David Vanderson
It's possible to temporarily eliminate the delay in Skype by switching
pulse's output during a call. I start the call, switch from my usb
headset to the built-in speakers, then back to the headset. For the
rest of the call things are good.

Hopefully this information might help others.

Same here.CPU usage going through the roof. Temperature reaching
critical levels while using skype and pulse audio.

Not to mention, pulse audio has problems on the other end depending what
OS the other person is using.

Big issue. Needs to be fixed now. We use it for offshore oil and gas.
CIO is getting really ticked with all the problems in Jaunty.

We're going to kill pulse audio and maybe Ubuntu OS for good now.

I switched to Skype v2.1 beta a couple of weeks ago and since then I
have had no further sound problems. I have had no other crashes either,
and some new features improve the skype experience. xq19space, I
recommend that you install the latest skype before thinking about
ditching Pulse. Pulse is very much part of Ubuntu now and removing it
will likely cause you more problems.

2009-07-01 Thread mikef
I am having the same problem since I upgraded to Jaunty. I can hold a
conversation for a little while, then the sound goes quiet, the CPU on one core
hits 100%, they can hear me but I can't hear them. If I kill skype or use the
Pulse volume control to kill Skype.real Skype works again. I have tried lots of
changes and recommendations.
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=306381st=0 has numerous
reports of this bug and suggestions none of which work, infact I think
medibuntu and ubuntu launchpad and forums have numerous related bugs. I am
happy to perform any debugging process if you tell me how.

Skype is pretty much unusable at the moment and I depend on it for work.
If it isn't fixed soon my colleagues will force me to migrate back to
Windows :( so I am desperate that it is resolved soon!

[Bug 362203] Re: Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec)

2009-06-10 Thread Sepero
I think I have somewhat of a solution.

I was able to get Skype to run perfectly fine, just as it did on Hardy. I set
all options to pulse audio, then ran the following commands:
sudo echo deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy restricted main
multiverse universe /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins=1.0.15-1ubuntu3
libasound2=1.0.15-3ubuntu4 libpulse0=0.9.10-1ubuntu1 -d
sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/lib*

reboot

.
Unfortunately, this completely breaks every package manager on Ubuntu.
Fixing the package managers will undo the changes, and can be done with this
command:
sudo apt-get install -f

.
.
After returning to the normal Jaunty libraries, pulse appears to run perfectly
fine with multiple applications running at the same time (tested Skype,
Audacity, Flash plugin, Mplayer). The only problem I've noticed was that Pulse
Audio test does not work correctly under:
SystemPreferencesSound

It gives this error:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink
profile=chat: Failed to connect: Connection refused

It's in progress in karmic. There is no simple workaround that also

Essentially, it cannot be fixed properly in jaunty before a solution

2009-05-27 Thread skoczko
So, as I understood correctly, you are proposing we all quit using skype
and wait until Karmic Koala is out? It's simply not gonna go. Pulseaudio
breaks skype (and bunch of other apps) and should not be included
(without _ANY_ integration testing it seems) in Ubuntu in the first
place. Yes, I know, Pulse is The Right Thing and offers a bunch of great
features but it breaks applications that many people need in everyday
work. Most people use a very limited subset of functionality that a
sound server offers - primarily software mixing and that can be achieved
with plain ALSA (using dmix). As long as pulseaudio doesn't operate
transparently enough for the legacy apps (yes, most of them broken and
misusing ALSA, but that does change anything) to keep working, it NEEDS
to be excluded from the stable Ubuntu release. So those workarounds are
perfectly valid. On the side, the ONLY reason I choose Ubuntu over
Debian for my laptop/desktop is the usually better support for
'everyday' apps. This bug is breaking that premise.

2009-05-26 Thread Vitaly
Yes, using pulseaudio with skype in 9.04 gives a leak of memory, but
fortunately it is possible to avoid using pulseaudio with skype. First,
I changed my sound settings (System-Preferences-Sound-Detault mixer
tracks) to HDA Intel (Alsa mixer). Then in Skype I changed all three
sound device options (sound in, sound out, ring) to HDA Intel. After
that Skype works well without leak of memory.

Thomas, to change the setting of sound in your computer you can use the main
menu (usually on the top of screen) chose System, then Preferences, then Sound.
In the window, which opens, in the bottom you will see Default mixer tracks.
Change device to HDA Intel (Alsa mixer).
Above this part in the same window you see Sound capture and ...test. Check
if sound recording works well (press test and say something in microphone.
You must here your voice playing back).
Then open skype options, find sound devices and change sound in, sound
out, ring to HDA Intel. This solved problem for me.

2009-05-26 Thread Vitaly
Sorry, Martin, I agree, maybe it is not leak. I just see that when you
start a skype call using pulseaudio, skype consumes more and more CPU
memory with time and I think this finally results in audio delays. It
seems like leak of memory, but I am not sure what is the real reason.
Without pulseaudio it occupies small amount of memory which does not
increase with time.

[Bug 362203] Re: Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec)

2009-05-19 Thread Klaus Heinrich Kiwi
Another me too here, but let me add a few points:
 * It's happening to both my Thinkpad's T61 Intel HDA sound driver as to my
Microsoft Lifechat LX-3000 USB headset
 * other applications are also affected, namely Rhythmbox and Totem
(video/sound goes out-of-sync after a while)
 * played around with daemon.conf parameters such as
realtime-scheduling|priority, high-priority and nice-level, as well as with
resample-method, default-fragments, default-fragments-size-msec - I could make
things a bit better, but the problem is far from being solved
 * removed pulseaudio from my system as of now (can't afford in helping in
testing since I use audio-conferencing a lot in my work), skype/rhythmbox/totem
are all back to normal using alsa drivers (under 2% cpu usage, no noticeable
gaps in playback)
