[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7
ok i'm back, I did a clean install and i was able to reboot for a while, then i installed the 250Mb of updatesand it stopped. I'm back at square one. I looked at the suspected modem issues, modem-manager in particular and eventually killed the process off entirely and renamed the binary to stop it from relaunching. Made sure that modem-manager was not running and tried a reboot. this time i get no modem-manager exceptions but i'm left with the HAL message mentioned above and a flashing cursor. Pretty sure this is not modem related guys. Uninstall your modem and see if the problem goes away. Linux is not a modem or fax friendly OS unless it is an ancient external modem/fax connected via serial port. HI Bernhard, It's not practical for me to re-install because i am currently traveling around Mexico with only limited internet access. [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7
yes sorry i should have said that i have done a clean install in the past. This build is from a clean install. I have been backwards and forwards from 9.04 to 9.10 a few times 4 months trying to fix various and numerous anoyances and bugs. I just booted up into a live image which has 2.6.31-14 kernel. It reboots no problem so that good. I still have that kernel on the system so i booted up into that from grub but have the same reboot issue. So it's to do with a package in my system that is not in the live distro? I suspect that this might be to do with HAL not shutting down properly but not sure how to move forward on that. Also, on each boot i get a message on the splash screen saying that one or more mounts in fstab could not be mounted, usually my /home, it then just boots up anyway and is fine. I have fsck'd /home and it's fine. I dont think that is related but maybe worth mentioning. -- [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/418509 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The live CD/USB won't have any modem support. Do you have modem/fax support installed on your machine? If so, remove _all_ of it. Well, According to your post, you died some time after modem devices were being killed off. Were you able to use your 3G modem from the live CD/USB stick to surf the Web and read email? If not, then I would suspect the problem lies in either the drivers or your configuration for 3G. Re: [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7
Odds are it was switched on during your installation and various things got installed to support it. Even if the device is disabled, there is a possibility it would still be found during installation and those network things would get installed. My guess is your hang on shutdown is being caused because you don't have your built in 3G configured correctly (if that is even possible) and the network shutdown is waiting for a response it never gets. You need to close this bug. Once you spend a lot of time in the networking forums looking for how to correctly configure your built in 3G modem, you will either solve your problem or you will find an existing bug report to attach your information to. [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7
The problem still occurs, but there is workaround that works for me: #shutdown sudo initctl start rc RUNLEVEL=0 #reboot sudo initctl start rc RUNLEVEL=6 It is not clear to me, that upstart rc task is stopped after the system was run. All processes started by rc are run so rc should alsrc task looks only as a kind of kick-starter and nothing more. thinkpad ~$ sudo initctl status rc rc stop/waiting upstart in newest Ubuntu 9.10 is not quite stable. It requires more efforts in my opinion, but I may be wrong certainly. [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7
I thought everything had been resolved for me having updated to 2.6.31-8. However... if I delete a couple of files using Nautilus and then go for a system shutdown I get the warning message that Nautilus is still deleting files (even though it actually finished). Same goes for copying files... a shutdown will report Nautilus is still busy copying. Forcing a shutdown leads to the same 'superblock inconsistency' issue on reboot and the need for an fsck. The superblock issue is that it has found a timestamp one hour (exactly) in the future... strange one this. Anyway, none of this happened prior to this bug so I am concluding that there is... (a) either an outstanding issue directly related to this bug or (b) that the original bug caused an inconsistency in my filesystem and/or configuration causing the Nautilus errors and superblock inconsistencies. -- [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/418509 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7
Hi Bernhard I have just been reading a related issue being discussed on the forums, see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1252690 The bug could be unrelated and just coincidental to the 'hanging' problem that has now been addressed. However, as you are experiencing the same issues as me, please could you try running System--Administration--Time Date. My settings for timezone are corrupted and cannot be reset, although looking at/setting them from the command line appears fine. Please let me know if you are also experiencing the timezone corruption issue. My apologies... I was typing my response and did not see mac_v's message until after I had sent it. Bernhard - I would still appreciate your letting me know about the timezone issue. If you have successfully installed the new kernel (2.6.31-8.28), then you will have success after you have found a non-destructive way to reboot or power down your system New kernel replacement and use only occurs after a reboot cycle. The original (older kernel = 2.6.31-7) remains in-place until the system is correctly shut down. If you are offered a choice of kernels at boot then choose the latest = 2.6.31-8.28! [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7
This issue was fixed for me when I installed the 2.6.31-8 Kernel. You can install most necessary packages with apt-get: sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.31-8 sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.31-8-generic sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.31-8-generic You can then install the linux-libc-dev package using wget: wget wget https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/2.6.31-8.28/+build/1192025/+files /linux-libc-dev_2.6.31-8.28_i386.deb sudo dpkg -i *.deb Do a reboot (this is the last time you should have to hit the power button to reboot) and select the 2.6.31-8 kernel from the GRUB Boot menu. Once you have booted up, try a shutdown or restart and you should find that the problem has gone! I too am affected by the GRUB bug (bug 420077) mentioned above... let's hope they squash that one soon too!
For the record and your system integrity: you don't have to push the power button to shut down your pc, even if you're suffering from this bug or a similar one: the alt+sysrq+button combos remain valid! So, if you have to reboot your machine, all you have to do is, while holding alt + sysrq, press: REISUB. It will stop then kill brutally any process still running, but at least (and this is very important) it will sync and safely unmount all the filesystems! If you have to power off, the combination is REISUO. [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31rc7
As #16 says I receive a prompt to run fsck reporting that there was an unexpected inconsistency as the last superblock write was (exactly) one hour in the future. Not sure if it is relevant but I wondered if there was an inconsistency between how Karmic was tracking time and I ran System--Administration--Time and Date (i.e. time-admin) to find that the time zone etc. is all corrupt and cannot be set (just reports 'unconfigured'). Setting timezone etc. from the command line is fine and it reports the correct time. Another issue that I found is that if I try to log out I am warned that Nautilus is still copying/deleting files, whereas in fact it should have finished those activities as the files in question had been moved/deleted hours before. Just wondered if those outstanding actions (which I am warned about every time I try to log out now) are causing the hang on shutdown and then resulting in the 'unclean' filesystem flag being set. -- [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/418509 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Guys, I'm actually going to reassign this to the linux (Ubuntu) kernel package rather than against linux-meta. I'm also tagging this regression-potential to make sure it gets on everyone's radar. I will note that we saw quite a few regressions such as this with the 2.6.31-7 Ubuntu kernel. We're currently working on ripping out some of the KSM patches that went in which we believe might be the culprit and indeed what @Hernando Torque has likely narrowed down by disabling CONFIG_KSM . Please continue to track and test any kernel updates that get pushed and let us know your results. That is the same UPDATE response I got earlier. It simply means the meta package is not released (yet). Just goto https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/2.6.31-8.28/+build/1192025 and select your matching kernel, 'wget' the package, then use dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.31-8-generic_2.6.31-8.28_i386.deb (or whataver kernel package matches). - Original Message - From: Noel J. It simply means the meta package is not released (yet). That's what I figured, but I thought I'd check after seeing other people say that it was already updated for them. Thanks, but I do know how to wget and dpkg. :-) Downloaded the four (4) .debs that I need, dpkg -i to install them, and then apt-get upgrade installed the rest. Didn't need to purge anything. Whether I restart or shutdown. I have to use the power button to kill it. On boot, I did get information feedback, but after this last restart...I get nothing, the computer just hangs about 85% into the ubuntu loading screen. I did receive feedback from selinux in tty1 and a fail on networking and a freeze just past winbind in tty7. I can not get any of my 4 up to date installs of 9.10 64bit to shut down right. Not only that but they will not boot up either. Will boot somewhat to recovery mode but not except password for terminal. Installed another A4, no updates. Can boot it and boot to recovery menu on others from there. apt-get update got new grub. Will not deal with ext4 at all. But can still boot to new A4, redo grub-install and get to same place in recovery. Will take password when coming from 31-5 kernal The -6 and -7 just do not work at all and can not boot. I guess I will have to keep updating and hoping. -- [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31rc7 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/418509 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
