[Bug 704833] Re: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead
@ Uri Try this: Open up startup application, scroll to dropbox, edit the entry by removing -i after dropbox start. clean install of natty (11.04) creates the problem every login, and the icon isn't shown in the indicator applet. to fix this, i realized you can close Dropbox through the terminal and open it again. ushabtay@ushabtay-Inspiron-1525:~$ dropbox stop Dropbox daemon stopped. ushabtay@ushabtay-Inspiron-1525:~$ dropbox start Starting Dropbox...Done! ushabtay@ushabtay-Inspiron-1525:~$ i have no clue how to fix this that in every login i'll see the icon as an indicator applet.. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/704833 Title: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@Paul: Indeed sounds good. also, being bunched together with other apps in one menue still generates encouragement to port to the new implementation, while more or less conserving usability in the transition period. @Jorge: I updated the (most?) relevant thread over at the db forums, maybe this also generates some attention.

[Bug 704833] Re: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead
I like Sebastian's idea of implementing the systray as an indicator-applet which just packs them in a menu. I'd find it immensely more useful than the black-/whitelisting of applications. Anyone sees a conflict with the goal of app-indicators? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/704833 Title: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 704833] Re: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead
What is about a compability indicator which has the old systray as drop down list... So then we have it solved for all applications that use systray (no whitelisting necessary). So we would have a soft transition. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/704833 Title: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 704833] Re: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead
See this report, where I propose that all applications should be white- listed to be able to use the notifiation (systray) area, at least for a transition period: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/733312 Users who want to achieve this (allowing to get Dropox icon back while its indicator-applet problem is solved) can issue this command in a terminal: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "[ 'all' ]" Otherwise, to only add Dropbox in the white list (along with Wine and Skype), I guess the command should be: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "[ 'JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Wine', 'Skype', 'Dropbox' ]" -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/704833 Title: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 704833] Re: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead
Thanks Niran for this clarification. Now I understand better what the problem is. But still, my comment is the following: If, for any reason, an application can't use the (new) indicator-applet system and still relies on the (old) notification area applet, this should work well with Natty (or at least, if it doesn't work out of the box, user should have the option to add the notification area to the upper bar). I suspect that there are still various useful applications that have not made the switch to the indicator-applet system... In other words, users/developers need a transition period. My 2 cents! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/704833 Title: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 704833] Re: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead
To clarify, Dropbox's indicator menu works fine in Maverick. In Natty, it sounds like it isn't detecting that the indicator-applet is present, so it falls back to adding a notification area applet, which doesn't display in Natty. If Dropbox's indicator-applet detection has broken from Maverick to Natty, there are likely other implementations that have broken as well. At the very least, the indicator-applet change should be reported to them so they can fix it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/704833 Title: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 704833] Re: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead

[Bug 704833] Re: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead
Let's just not forget that if actual Dropbox works well with actual freedesktop.org standards for notification/system tray things (which I assume is the case considering that Dropbox notification/system tray notification works relatively well in KDE, XFCE, etc.), it would be hard to complain if they don't adapt to Canonical/Ubuntu specific "standards"... So here's my comment/suggestion: let's respect freedesktop.org standards (or any other relevant standard) with Unity/Ubuntu.
