[Bug 999638] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 - won't resume from suspend. Acer Aspire One 722
A me-to report. My system is a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS after an upgrade from 10 (with all current updates). After the upgrade, the system will not resume from suspend. Upon resume, the screen is lit/on, but black. The keyboard is completely unresponsive. Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work. Caps Lock does not even work! (i.e. the Caps Lock LED on the keyboard does not illuminate). The possible solution by pbn above does not work. Oddly, if I move terminal to Ctrl+Alt+F1, and run sudo pm-suspend, wait and resume, then the screen will flicker once and show the terminal for a split second. After this, the screen turns black again, keyboard unresponsive etc. Screen is backlit. Sometimes, after 20-30 seconds the backlight turns on and off for second. Suspend/resume worked splendidly on this system prior to the update to 12.04. Would suspend/resume for weeks on end. Seems this bug is affecting many users on different systems (but same kernel; 3.2.0). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/999638 Title: Ubuntu 12.04 - won't resume from suspend. [Bug 999638] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 - won't resume from suspend. Acer Aspire One 722
There is a (rather tedious) workaround that seems to reliably work to suspend/resume my Aspire One 522 with fglrx (12.4) and the default (3.2.0) ubuntu 12.04 kernel. Actually, it seems that only the *first* resume does not perfectly restore the X display. At least when using 'quirk-vbestate-restore', text consoles are properly restored and the further resumes are also able to restore the X display. To work around this: 1. Edit /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/98video-quirk-db-handler and, at line 371, replace '--quirk-none' by '--quirk-vbestate-restore'. This is to cause pm-suspend to use this quirk by default whenever fglrx is detected and only has to be done once. 2. Go to a text console with AltF1 and login. 3. Enter the command sudo pm-suspend. The machine should enter the suspend state. 4. Press a key to wake the machine up. Wait a few seconds till the process is complete. Do *not* try to return to X with AltF7 at this point or the machine will hang. All the text consoles can be used, however. 5. Enter the command sudo pm-suspend once more and wait till the machine is suspended. 6. When you resume the machine again, you should be able to switch back to the X display and do the next suspend/resume cycles from there (by simply closing the lid). Steps 2 to 5 have to be done after every reboot. All these manual steps are tedious and I do not see how it could be automated, but for those that seldom / never reboot their machines (like me with a proper suspend!), it might be a viable solution for now.
Since modesetting may play a part in making resume fail, I retried after switching the onboard Intel Q35 graphics of the HP dc7800p CMT to an Nvidia GT520. Expectedly this has caused some changes to how the system behaves: It will suspend once, stopping its fans - as well as usually respond to the keyboard Wake Up button and even work long enough to allow the user to re-logon, but then often freeze or panic with the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights blinking. If it does continue to a usable desktop, further use of the Sleep key will only cause the monitor to go dark briefly, but always keep the fans running, and automatically wake up again just seconds later most of the time - also resulting in freezes with Caps Lock and Scroll lock blinking in many cases. No chance at using Ctrl-Alt-F1/7 to recover from there of course. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/999638 Title: Ubuntu 12.04 - won't resume from suspend. Curiously, with the Nvidia GT520 installed, repeated invocations of NJC's (post #10) sudo sh -c sync; echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend from a command shell window (Ctrl-Alt-T) in LXDE result in the fans being stopped during suspend and the system reproducibly resuming without issue, albeit only 10+ seconds after Wake Up has been pressed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/999638 Title: Ubuntu 12.04 - won't resume from suspend. I'm seeing the same problem on the Acer Aspire One, Model ZG5, which has an Intel Atom CPU and Intel Graphics card. On resume, the screen stays black rather than showing the screensaver. I am able to Ctrl+Alt+F1, login in and forcefully kill X, and then log in again. I don't appear to be able to do a simple pkill X, it needs the -9 option. This seems to suggest that it's the X server, and possibly the drivers where the problem is. [Bug 999638] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 - won't resume from suspend. Acer Aspire One 722
Besides laptops, a Hewlett-Packard HP Compaq dc7800p Convertible Minitower (Core2Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz, Grizzly mainboard with Q35 graphics) also wakes up from suspend only to running fans rather than keyboard lights (Num Lock without effect of toggling LEDs) and screen (black or no signal). This is after 10.04 LTS had resumed reliably on the same machine for many months. Unlike https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/989674?comments=all there was no way to a working text console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 (first thing I tried) and from there to X by Ctrl-Alt-F7, due to a completely non-responsive keyboard. However, the following is displayed on a full-screen text console after entering sudo pm-hibernate just once at a command prompt (well hidden by Unity as Ctrl-Alt-T): watchdog: only one watchdog can use /dev/watchdog. watchdog: error registering /dev/watchdog (err=-16). mei: unable to register watchdog device. ^ mild Bavarian invective I guess... ;-) Afterwards, cycling into Suspend and back with the Sleep Wake Up buttons of the PS/2 keyboard has been working several times so far. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/999638 Title: Ubuntu 12.04 - won't resume from suspend.
