Re: Cloud images and ubuntu package testing now use systemd

2015-03-04 Thread Kai Mast

Will the user sessions also be switched to systemd?

On Wed, Mar 4, 2015 at 12:42 PM, Martin Pitt
wrote:

Hello all,

this morning I discovered that our daily cloud images got switched to
booting with systemd last night. I adjusted the daily autopkgtest CI
image build process to cope with that, and it looks good again. That
means that all package tests in Ubuntu CI, i. e. on
https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/view/Vivid/view/AutoPkgTest/
are running under systemd now.

This apparently caused some regressions in e. g.
https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job/vivid-adt-heat/? and maybe a few
others, so if you look at why your package started failing its tests,
this is a very likely reason.

For those who wonder, we still plan to switch vivid to systemd by
default, but the FFE [1] is still pending. I'll send a
warning/instructions announcement before that happens.

Thanks,

Martin

Totem Maintainer?

2012-11-10 Thread Kai Mast
Hey Guys,

I was wondering who is taking care of totem downstream aswell as upstream.
There are several bugs I encountered several releases an no fix in
sight. So I am looking for somebody to fix them or at least knows the
code and can guide me fixing them.

The two most annyoing are:

* "Totem Hangs on launch if multiple instances are openend at once" (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/1008401 )
Thats one of the bugs I encouter nearly every day. My touchpad
behaves a little weir so often I "triple click" an two or three
instances start and directly freeze up. Very annying and has been
confirmed to me in the #GNOME irc-channel that it does not only happen
on Ubuntu.

* "Totem shows wrong frame when pausing" (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/964555 )
Also very annoying. When you pause a video it sometimes jumps to
another location. Had this bug for YEARS. It also has many duplicates
and people affected by it. Still nobody seems to care.

Thanks for helping

Ah okay. You need to install it as a sperate package
"accounts-plugin-irc". Should be installed by default though :/

Well this is exactly my point. Really my post wasn't in any way trying
to offend you. I love the minor fixes you did in Gwibber and I actually
(more or less forced myself to) use Gwibber for a long time.

I am just wondering why Canonical isn't pushing a little more effort
into this? Or is this planned in the long run?

As I pointed out before, it is not that easy to get started as a
developer on Gwibber imo. Especially the Vala code isn't well documented..

Drop Gwibber from default install

2012-03-10 Thread Kai Mast
Hey Guys,

I would like to open a discussion about removing Gwibber from the
default install. Gwibber has several defects that make it way worse to
use than the Twitter-Website.

- No support for Twitters Streaming API makes it a lot slower than the
Website
NOTE: This feature is nearly 2 years old!!
https://bugs.launchpad.net/gwibber/+bug/520238

- No autocompletion of usernames makes it much more difficult to
communicate with Gwibber
   https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/247015

Also some other stuff that is really annoying:
- No smooth scrolling
https://bugs.launchpad.net/gwibber/+bug/828593

- No multi-column view
https://bugs.launchpad.net/gwibber/+bug/82

Is there anybody actually using Gwibber on a daily basic? I have it
uninstalled on all my machines and use Twitter through the Web-Interface.

I would love to use a native desktop-application but Gwibber is just
missing soo many features. Also it seems that Canonical has more or
less dropped supporting its development. At least there aren't many
updates on Gwibber in Precise.

What do you think?

greetings

I guess the problem is that ubuntu-notifications don't support interaction.

In my opinion, it'd be better to just show normal notification bubbles
without interaction. There is the battery indicator that shows low
battery level anyways, the powercog could also turn red (like when
updates are required) to show that the computer is about to shutdown...

I think its good that some versions are kept back. The new clutter-based
totem in 3.2 for example is flickering a lot on my machine (tested it on
the gnome3 ppa).

I don't understand that logic at all.
Merging the title bar of the window and the top-panel means that the
top-panel is in the way of the window, and that without the indicators
you wouldn't need it at all...

It would be much less straightforward, for three reasons. First, the
launcher is visible much less often than the launcher is. Second, even
when it is visible, launcher items are sometimes folded off the bottom
of the launcher, while nothing like that ever happens to the sound menu.
And third, a quicklist is accessible only if the music player is running
or is one of your favorites, whereas the sound menu is accessible all
the time.

Why do you need to control the music player if it isn't running at all?

It's pretty easy to show the launcher just by moving to the edge of the
screen, so I don't see where the problem is here. Somebody already
suggested that we could only partially hide the launcher, which I think
is a great idea. The hidden launcher is also very diffcult to understand
as a casual user. Just read one of the reviews of unity and it will say
exactly the same...

> Well, you're right some indicators are still needed like the battery

That's possibly true. Phone OSes typically use a whole top panel just
for indicators, but they have much less width to work with.

But it's also irrelevant, because in Ubuntu the menu bar is not used
just for indicators, it is also used for window menus. That would be a
good thing even if there were no indicator menus at all.
I still think that the global menus aren't a good solution. Especially
the way they're hidden right now. It's very difficult for a newbie to
find out that you have to hover the top-panel to get to the window menu..

By removing the top-panel we would of course need to move the window
menus back to the windows..

>We could move the indicator area into the dash

That would be even worse than moving it into the launcher.
Sorry I meant the launcher..always confuse those too. The indicator area
could be located where the thrash icon is at the moment. Just like you
have on windows 7 when the panel is on the side of the screen.

Look at this screenshot for example: http://bayimg.com/KAIDkaAdO

The wingpanel is mostly a false economy. It relies on you having
something useful to do with the left ~70% -- but not the right ~30% --
of the top row of the screen, which is unlikely.
You don't need the right part of the screen because the titlebars are
layed out in a way that this area is always unused. At least in the
default Ubuntu theme...

As far as I know, Empathy does not indicate new messages anywhere in the
Dash. It is true that it uses both the launcher and the messaging menu,
and that this is duplication. But the messaging menu aggregates new
messages from multiple applications, and it's not at all obvious how
this coul

I don't know what you mean by "maximize to panel". As for the global
menu, patches for that are heading upstream for Firefox, Thunderbird,
 and LibreOffice 3.4.

I don't mean the global menu but the way the maximized window and the
top-panel get merged. Imo this is a sign that the top-panel has no use
anymore..

 >Functionality like the sound menu could also be

That would mean things like the time, volume, and battery status would
be invisible much of the time, and would take up much of the launcher
when they were visible. It would be the worst of both worlds.

With sound menu I meant the way you can control you music player via
indicators. It would be way more straightforward if one could control
the music player via a jumplist (=right-click-menu).

Well, you're right some indicators are still needed like the battery or
network indicator, but this doesn't justify a whole top panel in my
opinion. We could move the indicator area into the dash or even better
use something like the once proposed wingpanel:
http://cdn.omgubuntu.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/sipzz.jpg

My problem with the current situation is that a lot of functionality is
duplicated. Empathy for example indicates new messages on the dash and
also in the messaging-indicator...

Kai

Eventually drop the top-panel?

2011-06-25 Thread Kai Mast

Hey Guys,

I was wondering with adding functionality to the dash like indicating
progress or a message counters, are there plans to drop the indicator
menu and with it the whole top panel?

This would mean that we could drop all the "maximize to panel" and
globalmenu-patches. Functionality like the sound menu could also be
included into the jumplist of the dash...

Is there really still a need for indicators? I hardly use them...

Any thoughts on this?

greetings,
Kai

I would really like to see that too. Maybe in the future we need a
wiki-like system so people can add custom content to about-pages.

But first i think we should focus on functionality of the software
center like supporting dist-upgrade/upgrade directly trough it.

I am using BackInTime to do this. But this app is missing some Gui love.
Integration with the AppIndicators for example would be awesome.

Btrfs is not solving the problem directly imo. It allows making backups
on the fly but they remain on the same harddis. My fear however is that
my harddisk could break at some point. Then my data would be lost with
with btrfs too wouldn't it?

Backintime could also be improved a lot for example I would like to see
an "autostart" feature when i plugin a removeable harddisk that asks me
if i want to use it for backing up my home directory

What do you guys think?

Sound Indicator

2010-07-13 Thread Kai Mast
Hey Guys,

I don't really like the way the sound indicator is going. I have a lot
of space in my top bar and the indicator for rhythmbox really fits nice
there. I don't really want it to get removed...

I think the sound indicator should use its space for per-application
volume control instead of displaying the cover art of rhythmbox.

Anyone thinks the same? I don't think I am the only one...
