[Bug 22336] Re: CPU overheats during high usage throttling not supported
Just another data point: I'm experiencing these overheating problems on an Acer Aspire 3620 laptop. It's in stock condition, 512 MB Ram, 1.6Ghz Celeron processor. I'm running Ubunutu 6.06.1 LTS. The laptop runs _hot_. For the first few weeks I had it, it frequently exhibited massive slowdowns that I now believe are the result of passive cooling kicking it. (It took a while to diagnose the problem.) I've taken to propping it up on a book on the left side. The intake vent is on the bottom on the right side. Raising it a half inch or so made a big difference and made the machine much more usable. So, propped up, and using powernowd, the machine would run hot at about 78-82 degrees Celcius while idleing at the slowest speed (200 Mhz). My usual workload is pretty light, so while hot things seemed to work. However, Flash animations, especially video (say, YouTube) running full screen is the big stresser. It will quickly drive the tempurature up to 90. Extended use can drive the tempurature to 95, at which point the passive cooling makes the machine unbarably slow. Oddly enough, it doesn't seem to help the tempurature much. I recently tried switching to the kernel's ondemand scaling. (sudo /etc/init.d/powernowd stop ; sudo sh -c 'echo -n ondemand 'sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor' as noted repeatedly above) I can't explain why this would change anything, but the machine is idling a bit cooler, 75-78. YouTube video gets the machine up to 90-91, which is hot, but usable. Obviously this isn't a real fix; I'm pretty sure 90 degrees Celcius is bad for the machine, but it's an acceptable workaround for now. (I knew what I was getting into when I bought such a cheap machine.) A few bits of information; I'm happy to provide more upon request. $ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZS0/cooling_mode setting not supported cooling mode: passive $ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZS0/polling_frequency polling disabled $ dmesg /tmp/dmesg-bug ((attached)) ** Attachment added: dmesg http://librarian.launchpad.net/7571909/dmesg-bug -- CPU overheats during high usage throttling not supported https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/22336 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I had this error too... I did a search in synaptic and saw python-dict. I decided it might of been corrupted so I removed it completely. [Bug 51991] Re: Xorg process freezes, uses 100% of CPU. Can be killed by remote terminal.
I ditched Beryl because it's a little too unstable for my liking at this time, especially with dual displays. Back to getting frequent hangs in X. I ran gdb and did a couple back traces: (gdb) bt #0 0x0809c8d4 in DeletePassiveGrabFromList () #1 0x08092cc5 in ProcUngrabButton () #2 0x08142531 in ?? () #3 0x0858c858 in ?? () #4 0x0858c858 in ?? () #7 0xbfa96808 in ?? () #8 0x081c7fa8 in ?? () #9 0x in ?? () I did this many times, and each trace showed roughly one of the two above stacks. This never happens when the system is in use. Occasionally, when I sit down at the system, the cpu is fluctuating in usage for no reason (I have a cpu monitor on my desktop so I notice this right away). For example, it will be constant 25%, 0%, 25%, 0%, etc. Once I start using the system, this behaviour usually goes away and X calms down and returns to normal with no noticeable usage. No freeze here. The unrecoverable hanging usually occurs after I lock the system. In KDE, I have the habit of locking it whenever I leave the system for an extended period of time (don't ask me why). At this point, I have to switch to a terminal and kill X. I want to make it clear that this is not always the case -- sometimes the lockup occurs without the session locked when I've left the computer alone for a while (usually many hours). The dmesg showed no signs of NVRM: Xid messages as suggested above when X is going crazy. When it is frozen and X is eating the cpu, I can see all the windows I had running fine, but interestingly, none of them have any window decorations -- they're all gone. The mouse moves fine but I can't click on anything or use the keyboard, except to switch terminals. Anything else I can try? I'm thinking about starting to look at ATI cards as this is awfully annoying. -- Xorg process freezes, uses 100% of CPU. [Bug 89983] Re: Feisty reports suspend failed after resuming from suspend
I can confirm this, on my Dell Inspiron 640m. As soon as the laptop enters sleep mode (display, disks, fans, everything shutdowns ok, and the power led starts to blink), it wakes up again, and after unlocking the screen, a g-p-m alert informs me that the computer couldn't suspend. [Bug 112909] Support extended attributes
Public bug reported: Support for extended attributes is currently extremely lacking to non-existent, even if the file system supports them. Extended attributes lost when a file is copied or moved, they are lost when editors or other programs update a file by deleting and re-creating it, they are lost when backing up files with tar, rsync or other programs. There is no support to actually use EAs from GUI programs (e.g. in Nautilus) either. EA could be a great way to allow both programs (in a hidden way) and users (via a GUI) to add meta-data and annotations to their files, which in turn could be used by Beagle to allow more intelligent searches. Making this work in a decent way and actually using it in a productive way could mean a major competitive edge over other OS which are still also lacking all these modern features. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Support extended attributes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112909 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 112906] Re: SATA drive not seen by kubuntu x86-64 on Asus M2A-VM / AMD 690G mobo
The above problem is with Onboard SATA Type set to IDE. When set to AHCI or RAID, kubuntu 7.4 x86-64 doesn't get through the boot and is stalled somewhere. See included picture / screen dump. ** Attachment added: picture of halted live CD boot http://librarian.launchpad.net/7572257/Kubuntu-7.04-x86-64-stalled-during-boot-liveCD.jpg -- SATA drive not seen by kubuntu x86-64 on Asus M2A-VM / AMD 690G mobo https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112906 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 61932] Re: Adept hangs when installing flashplugin-nonfree
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 39756 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/39756 It’s not just that the user doesn’t know what’s wrong until he clicks the “Show details” button. There is also no possibility to get rid of the hanging. At least, I cannot see any way to make Adept send some input like a “Return” to debconf. I have the same hanging problem when updating a Linux kernel image under Debian 4.0. -- Adept hangs when installing flashplugin-nonfree https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/61932 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Team, which is a bug contact for adept in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
