[Bug 118658] distro partial upgrade crash - exit code 16

2007-06-04 Thread _LameMind
Public bug reported:

Message Received while performing a partial distro upgrade: Impossibile
installare «linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic»

I got an Edgy (Desktop Edition) upgraded to Feisty.
After distro upgrade, Update Manager asked me to perform a partial distro
upgrade... It cannot update some nfs packeges until an upgrade is performed.
The Update Manager stopped, while trying to install
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic, with this message:
il sottoprocesso post-installation script ha restituito un codice di errore 16.
I try to translate: the post-installation sub-process script returned an error
code 16.

Here you can retrive logs about the crash...

[Bug 39145] Re: Request to update Greek dictionary

2007-06-04 Thread Nick Demou
(note: quotied text is re-order and often striped)

Athanasios Lefteris said 4 hours ago:
I could do an new version of the deb package easily
but i don't think there is a big point right now on doing that.
The new version has just a new lisence and the modifications
that Nick Demou made to the aff file. No new words.

ooops not at all: the new version [1] has about 400.000 words more than the
167284 in the official debian el_GR.dic [2]
So if you can do a new version I think it is worth it

the Greek Debian developers can be found here...
I have talked to markos and he is not in a mood right
now to make a new version. I haven't talked to the other two.

OK I can try to contact them ... let's see waht steve has to say first

... what is more important that making a new package for
a THREE year old dictionary is to make the upstream
development of the dictionary active again
100% with you

...and I think it would be a good idea if it could be improved
by using the new hunspell features (used by OO.org and soon mozilla).

hunspell surely seems promising and I do like the fact that it _is_
documented

_
[1] http://elspell.math.upatras.gr/files/ooffice/el_GR.zip
[2] http://packages.debian.org/unstable/text/myspell-el-gr

I sent an email to Steve Stavropoulos, the man that seems to be the
maintainer of the upstream project and asked him if he can move the
project to an open-source hosting site, so that we can have version
control, bug trucking and other benefits. I hope he agrees with this.

[Bug 118659] PyCurl 7.15.5 not working on AMD64

2007-06-04 Thread Davide Capodaglio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-pycurl

PyCurl 7.15.5 included in Feisty does not work for AMD64.
To reproduce, try to use the setopt method specifying a POSTFIELDS option: this
raise an exception of code 2 (CURLE_FAILED_INIT).
See also
http://curl.haxx.se/mail/curlpython-2007-04/0009.html
This problem is solved in 7.16.2, see
http://curl.haxx.se/mail/curlpython-2007-04/0010.html

The solution can be a backport of the new version of pycurl and libcurl
from Gutsy or a backport of the fix into 7.15.5 for feisty.

in Feisty and that dependency, whatever it is, has changed in a way that
breaks rezound. Heck, it might even be a kernel change. The reason the
segfault happens appears to be because rezound screws up while reading
from /dev/dsp. Perhaps the buffer it is reading into gets broken, or
perhaps it is reading improperly. I can't tell.

Also, I can say that rezound --audio-method=alsa has not worked to solve
this problem. I have tried it on many different Feisty machines, and it
crashes just the same as when using the default of OSS. However, there
is a way to get rezound to work. The way is to use jack. Do the
following if you don't have jack working already.

sudo apt-get install qjackctl
qjackctl
# push the start button
rezound --audio-method=jack

Now rezound will be able to work properly without crashing. Using jack
should also give you some measure of enhanced performance. This will be
especially true if you have the low-latency audio stuff in the kernel,
or if you use UbuntuStudio, which has the low-latency stuff by default.

Regardless, I think this bug needs increased priority. Rezound is the
only halfway decent single-track audio editor for Linux, and it's the
only free open source one in existence. Multi-track editors like
Jokosher or Audacity just do not cut it compared to Rezound, especially
when it comes to thinks like podcasting. Not having this application
work in Ubuntu Feisty is a pretty big deal.

Hi, thanks for your bug report. This is likely a configuration problem,
but not necessarily. If you set up the second card using only one input
(not the coax and comp) does the issue remain?

I think the best way to rule it out will be to blow away the SQL
database, and start back up from scratch adding one card into the db/one
input at a time. Make sure things work and then work it out to which
caused the issue.

2007-06-04 Thread Patrick Dempsey
Awesome, thanks!

I will have to check to see if the new ATI xorg drivers and XRandR have made
it into testing yet and try it out.

At least the XRandR 1.2 will mean I can run 1 Xorg configuration on my
laptops in the near future.
In my opinion this has been one of the major stumbling blocks to getting X
operating perfectly, and one of the very few areas where gasp Microsoft is
better at something.

Thanks to everyone for their great support!

Patrick

On 6/4/07, David Morris [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Well thanks to Paladine for this info

Well the problem is Xinerama disables XRandR extension in xorg, so if
something requires XRandR and Xinerama is running, it will fail due to
XRandR not being available. This is actually partially fixed by XRandR
1.2 which now has it's own Xinerama controls built in, however,
currently only Intel and I think ATI FOSS drivers support the XRandR 1.2
spec. I was talking to the NVidia proprietry driver devs yesterday
regarding XRandR 1.2 support and they said they are planning to make the
official drivers XRandR 1.2 compliant but there is no scheduled release
date at this time (it is quite a new spec).

This means once the drivers support the new spec, users will not need to
enable Xinerama in their xorg.conf as it will be handled by XRandR and
thus XRandR won't be disabled by the traditional Xinerama running.

Also there is a patch been worked on at mythtv which has put checks
before making the call which segfaults -

[Bug 118368] Re: ifconfig fail to load 3coms 3c905C-TX/TX-M [Tornado] lan card

2007-06-04 Thread Loye Young
I can confirm that this happened to me. Here's my work around:

1. Use the -a flag of ifconfig to get the report on all your ethernet
devices.

# ifconfig -a

If you are like me, it will show the second card as eth2. Copy the MAC
address of the second card to your clipboard.

2. Then, as root, edit /etc/iftab using your favorite text editor.
(Mine is nano.)

# sudo nano /etc/iftab

You will see something like the following:

eth0 mac 00:00:00:00:00:00 arp 1

but the mac address of the card that's already working will be displayed
instead of all zeros.

Add a line immediately under it:
eth1 mac [paste here the mac address you copied from step 1] arp 1

3. Save the file and exit. Reboot. (Trying /etc/init.d/networking
restart won't work. You'll need a full-blown reboot.)

It's what worked for me.

[Bug 113092] Re: nautilus in feisty can't open http:// URI which affects service-discovery-applet

2007-06-04 Thread Jacques Latrive
I can confirm this bug. I get exactly the same symptoms described in the
second comment.

About ftp urls : gnome-open freezes on them (does'nt do anything but does'nt
terminate either), evolution freezes when clicking on an ftp:// links in an
email, nautilus can't open ftp folders anymore, etc.
I noticed there was no ftp item in /desktop/gnome/url-handlers in gconf, this
may be related ...

All this happens on a feisty systems which was upgraded from edgy.

[Bug 118668] cdrom mounted to /media/label instead of /media/cdrom

Public bug reported:

CD media are now in Feisty mounted in /media subfolder named equal to media

[Bug 118667] xorg consumes a huge amount of memory

2007-06-04 Thread Jean Jordaan
Public bug reported:

After running for a while, I notice that Xorg is claiming a lot of
memory; e.g. snipped from top:

This is with an up-to-date Feisty. It that normal? I read through the
other bugs: I don't have gtk2-engines-gtk-qt running, and nothing
crashes. I do have Firefox running.

[Bug 107630] Re: [feisty] avahi-daemon 0.6.17 fail on boot

2007-06-04 Thread Francisco Javier Cuadrado
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 82287 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/82287

I have the same problem.

I have a WiFi USB adapter and if I configure the WiFi network in
/etc/network/interfaces, avahi-daemon fails on boot.

This is my /etc/network/interfaces file:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
name zd1201
wireless_channel 3
wireless_mode managed
wireless_essid THOMSON
wireless_key [MY WEP KEY]
address 192.168.0.11
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

One solution is not configure in /etc/network/interfaces, and when GNOME
starts, configure manually the WiFi using Network Manager, but this method is
ugly.

I don't know why there isn't a solution.

[Bug 118268] Re: Computer freezes on shutdown

2007-06-04 Thread Loye Young
I've had similar things happen to me.

1. When the screen is black, can you still see the mouse arrow?
2. Can you switch to the console? To see if you can, use Ctl-Alt-F3 to bring
up tty3.
3. If you can get to a console, log in and issue the shutdown command, like
this:

ubuntu login: yourusername
Password: yourpassword -- Nothing will show here when you are typing
yourpassword. Just trust your typing and then hit enter.
the boilerplate yada-yada-yada
[EMAIL PROTECTED] sudo shutdown -hP now
Password: yourpassword

4. If you cannot get to a console, does the machine respond to a Ctl-
Alt-Del reboot (The infamous Three Finger Salute)?

5. If the machine does not reboot after Ctl-Alt-Del, does your keyboard
NumLock LED light respond when you hit the NumLock key?

6. Post as an attachment /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

7. Post the RELEVANT portions of /var/log/syslog. The relevant portions
are those lines with the timestamp of around the time you tried to
shutdown. DON'T post the entire syslog, which would probably be an
enormous amount of irrelevant information. (Unless your system just
reloaded the logs.)

8. Is this a Dell computer? I have several Dells, and they all have
weird hardware issues. I've figured out solutions for all of them, but
they are strange until you get them figured out.

Post back with the answers. It will help troubleshoot where the problem
is.

Happy Trails,

2) search for SATA device codes in modules.pcimap for both kernels:
on my machine:
kernel 2.6.20-16:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic$ grep 24d1 modules.pcimap
piix 0x8086 0x24d1 0x 0x 0x 0x 0x0
ata_piix 0x8086 0x24d1 0x 0x 0x 0x 0x0

kernel 2.6.20-15
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic$ grep 24d1 modules.pcimap
ata_piix 0x8086 0x24d1 0x 0x 0x 0x 0x0

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic

linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic worked fine with following system:
feisty, xfs root fs (all in one) on (single) SATA disk on an intel ICH5 SATA
controller (I965 chipset)

after upgrading to linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic, the SATA disk is no more
under control of ata_piix, which is not loaded anymore,
SATA disk becomes /dev/hdc (/dev/hda being the DVD drive) instead of /dev/sda
as with 2.6.20-15

- with boot option irqpoll I was able to save dmesg and lsmod outputs,
- without irqpoll option, boot fails, even into single user mode.

this bug is already described well in debian bug # 419458 [
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=419458 ]
- which is already fixed in a new kernel package (for debian, NOT ubuntu!)
+ with 2.6.20-16 the SATA controller is claimed by both piix (IDE driver) and
ata_piix (SATA driver)

- in the debian bug record a simple verification can be found
- 1) find pci device codes for IDE and SATA controllers with
- lspci -nn
- part of the output on my machine:
- ...
- 00:1f.1 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE
Controller [8086:24db] (rev 02)
- 00:1f.2 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82801EB (ICH5) SATA
Controller [8086:24d1] (rev 02)
-
-
- 2) search for SATA device codes in modules.pcimap for both kernels:
- on my machine:
- kernel 2.6.20-16:
- [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic$ grep 24d1 modules.pcimap
- piix 0x8086 0x24d1 0x 0x 0x
0x 0x0
- ata_piix 0x8086 0x24d1 0x 0x 0x
0x 0x0
-
- kernel 2.6.20-15
- [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic$ grep 24d1 modules.pcimap
- ata_piix 0x8086 0x24d1 0x 0x 0x
0x 0x0
-
- so it is obvious that with 2.6.20-16 the SATA controller is claimed by both
piix (IDE driver) and ata_piix (SATA driver);
- that's where the problem arises.
-
- So I would hope some ubuntu kernel guru would take a closer look onto
- this now (how to trigger this? I'm afraid there's a lot of stuff coming
- in here every day...)
-
- *
- sorry for updating that often, I kept typing nonsense/mistakes :-|
+ details how to identify this are given in comment 72 down here (from the
+ debian bug record)

[Bug 118667] Re: xorg consumes a huge amount of memory

2007-06-04 Thread Loye Young
1. Most of the memory you are seeing in the top line you posted is shared,
cached and/or buffered, so it's working the way it's supposed to do.
2. Graphical user interfaces use memory. MSWindows of most any variety uses
much more than X does. It's one reason why Linux and Unix gurus didn't bother
with a desktop interface until recently. Some of the die-hards still don't like
the GUI. I myself am trying to learn my way around the command line so I don't
have to use an X server on some of my machines. I'm starting to get the hang of
it, but the GUI is still very useful.
3. make this report more useful -- Use Performance Monitor (KSysGuard). It's
in your K Menu Utilities Performance Monitor.

Happy Trails,
