One thing I miss as a developer is a clear list of items that need actual code change (not just theming (this has been brought up before). Maybe even a list with links to the relevant bug reports on bugzilla.gnome.org. IMHO, in this way (like write Francois) the theme looks more uniform and a good impact for user. Use many shades of color on the same theme make this pleasant little for user and little consistency in its entirety. Ok i tried the following edited my /boot/grub/device.map to show the following (hd0) /dev/sda (hd1) /dev/sdb edited the /boot/grub/menu.lst as follows title MANDRIVA linux kernel (hd1,4)/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=UUID=9be80552-9983-4062-b4da-1247596cbbae resume=/dev/sdb1 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd1,4)/initrd.img ** am not sure how the the hd1,4 should be should it be hd1, 1 or some other number. You can see which partition on each disk is marked as bootable from the fdisk outout i.e. the one with '*'. 1. When you say (hd0,1) it means 1st partition on 0th hard disk. So in your case you will have to specify (hd1,1). 2. You can see that root partition of your installation is specified with UUID. UUID is a unique identifier for every hard disk partition in your system. I am not sure if partitions on a USB disk will have same UUID everytime you boot. But if it is the case then you can boot into Ubuntu and find UUID for all partitions with command 'ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/'. 3. It is possible to dynamically specify kernel, initrd, and root in grub instead of trial and error on menu.lst. When you see grub menu of Ubuntu, press 'c' key. It will give you a command prompt. You can then give commands root, kernel and initrd. After that give command 'boot'. Ifthe parameter you have provided are correct it will boot in Mandriva. If now you can reboot machine by Ctrl + Alt + Del and try again. This way you won't have to boot in Ubuntu everytime. Once you have found correct values add those to your menu.lst Hope this helps. There's actually two separate products/projects/teams in the Ubuntu mobile space. One is for specific hardware devices and is only available pre-installed on those devices. The other is a generic ubuntu image which can be downloaded and installed on your own devices. It could be used for example on the EeePC or other small devices. If you want to get serious you can also buy your mail/PGP certificates/keys from trusted groups, but for most people that's not necessary. (Even then, people like Thawte provide $0 ways of getting PGP certs/keys that have a fairly good level of trust, and that can be enhanced by finding people in your area to sign the keys). As an aside, I read a couple of years ago (but is it true?) that under US law all such certificates under had to have keys accessible to the authorities for emails/data passing across US boundaries. I understand the reasoning from an anti-terrorism perspective but frankly don't trust the US on these things. Not paranoid - but there is a reason for encrypting which is defeated if people you don't know have access to it. Call me paranoid by all means - I prefer Private and Commercial Property. (This is not meant as a criticism / put-down of you - forgive me if it comes across that way). There are no laws in any first-world country to provide your private keys to the authorities. Your public keys are public (which is the point), and allow third parties to either verify documents come from you, or encrypt messages back to you (which can then only be decrypted by your private key, which only you have access too). PGP and SSH (RSA/AES/Blowfish/etc) encryption is strong enough to avoid detection even by government departments, and again the government has no way of forcing you to relinquish your private keys. The only extreme would be if you were suspected of serious criminal activity, and a federal court mandated that you release your encryption keys. A case just like this occurred in the US in 2007, and the judge presiding eventually ruled that a person could not be forced to reveal passwords and encryption keys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Boucher Australia isn't the US of course, and the case mentioned was an extreme involving highly illegal activity. I've been using the strongest encryption schemes available to me since they've become publicly available, and thus far the Australian government has not come knocking on my door. This is getting a bit off-topic, but the thing about encryption is the more people who use it, the more it will be attacked. This is actually a good thing, because it proves your encryption is sound. The US government for a long time used encryption in the military and government that was not available to the public. They found time and time again this was eventually broken either by members of the public, or by other governments. In the 80's and 90's it became apparent that if they released encryption standards into the public domain, more people would use it, and more people would try to break it. Standards like DES and 3DES are great examples of what was good encryption that was eventually broken and then improved by the private sector (IBM, in that case). Similarly, AES was a government project that opened competition for a new encryption scheme to the world (private and public). The winning standard - Rijndael, was released publicly. Again, the US (and other) governments realise that doing so makes it a bigger target, but in that regard it means it will be tested far more thoroughly by those attempting to break it worldwide. If something like AES becomes compromised trivially, word will spread quickly, and governments can quickly switch

Pessoal, estou tendo um ENORME problema com meu FTP, eu uso o Ubuntu 8.04 - Destop - 64 bits. Minha internet é via ADSL da BrT e tenho instalado o ProFTPd. O problema é o seguinte, quanto eu tento assim ftp://localhost ou ftp://sistematico ou ainda ftp://127.0.0.1 tudo funciona perfeito até demais, só que quando tento assim: ftp://lsbrum.no-ip.org não dá! Concordo, José Geraldo. São os de praxe e que devem ser usados prioritáriamente, mas citei o Kpackage porque é mais simples de usar no caso de pacotes tar.gz baixados. Funciona bem quando estamos com pressa, minimiza o processo. Esse é um comportamento normal, no windows até o XP a memória livre fica livre. Nos unices, memória livre e sem uso é um disperdicio. Por essa razão, memória livre é usada como cache. Bom dia galera, estou tentando fazer uma conexão dial up com o celular k550i, criei a conexão, até ai tudo bem, ele detecta o celular só não conecta, diz que o modem não está respondendo. Fiz o teste no windows e ele está funcinando normalmente. Então criei uma conexão ppp, pelo Gnome PPP. Com o dispositivo no /dev/rfcomm1. Gustavo, recomendo a vc que, quando instalar o linux, criar uma particao /home, que lá vc poderá instalar seus programas e jogar seus arquivos, sem a necessidade de perder tudo ou fazer backup quando quiser reinstalar algo. Recomendo, também, procurar sbaer do g4u ( ghost pra unix ), que vc fará uma iso do seu notebook. E se der algum problema, é só queimar a imagem novamente. Procure procurar bastante no google antes de tomar qualquer ação. Lá tem MUITA informação. Geralmente o notebook possui um botao que desliga-o via hardware, as vezes está na forma de Fn+F1..F12. Há um problema incômodo e curioso em meu sistema: sempre que o usuário 'jose' quer sair e clica no ícone correspondente o sistema trava por cerca de dois minutos e depois aparece a janela de opções de desligamento. Com o usuário 'dani' tudo é instantâneo. pdflush в полночь по GMT
Hi! Такая проблемка. Есть сервер, который регулярно и активно работает с кучей мелких файлов (.rrd, так как сервер мониторинга), для чего был принудительно увеличен объем dirty буферов. В общем, кэш сильно помог, производительность сильно улучшилась, но вот проблемка. В 04:00 по московскому времени в течении примерно 10 минут начинается сильный I/O, видимо дисковый, и система начинает заметно тормозить. Мониторинг (по sar) показывает, что в это время процентов 20-25 система проводит в iowait. В остальное время этот показатель редко превышает 10%. Также, детальное изучение различных срезов статистики получаемой из sar показывает, что в это время активно идет работа с дисковым кэшем. Косвенно можно судитиь по тому, что в top процесс pdflush на втором месте (на первом полезный процесс). Юзается обычный cron для системных вещей и fcron для моих нужд. Но в такое время ничего дополнительного не запускается. Кодировка имен фай лов
Добрый день... НЕ кто не в курсе какого-нить способа определения кодировки файла??? Т.е. не подставлять самому в параметрах, а именно узнать точную кодировку... я думаю, что слово Блин, не надо жать не совсем корректно по отношению к абсолютно незнакомому человеку. К тому же я использую для ответа встроенные вещи gmail, если я использую их некорректно по отношению к данному списку рассылки, прошу - напишите правильный путь. Вполне нормальная реакция на захламление треда и не соблюдение элементарных правил. Ничего обидного в этом для абсолютно незнакомого человека, на мой взгляд, нет. То что многие используют встроенные вещи gmail, а они работают некорректно - это очень слабенький аргумент.
