I would say that you should add a bit of anarchy in this... I think the
squares are too much lined up, this is obvious on the non-intensive one.
But the wings are nice, this wallpaper is impressive for a first try. :)

It's all about free software. Not as in free beer, but as in free speech ;)
Linux in general is about freedom and collaboration for the common good, rather
than maximazing profits and making someone rich.

It's the same for ubuntu-art. We make art for the community, not for some

It's simple economics. If an artist can find someone interested in
commissioning a piece of art, the artist can get paid to create it and still
give it a free culture license.

Of course, if this model doesn't suit you, you can always fall back on more
conventional copyright. Good luck getting someone to pay you -- which is why
most Windows wallpaper distributors fall back on free (as in beer) and sink
ever further to surreptitious malware installs and the like to get paid.

Your choice.

You are confusing issues here. Modern Indian language fonts
are Unicode-encoded, and use OpenType rules to aid rendering.
Inscript defines a keyboard input method which specifies what
Inidan-language characters are output upon pressing keys on
a normal English keyboard. The two have nothing to do with
 each other.

Thats what i was trying to work around - the need to setup some system
to setup inputting in hindi

with say the kruti dev fonts .ttf wallah you install select the font
and begin typing based on the hindi typrewriter.

Its just for ease of use (fore newbies) that i was searching for
inscript ttf fonts

I understand that Windows, from at least XP onwards, does have
support for Unicode, OpenType, Hindi fonts, and there are various
ways to get keyboard input methods set up in Windows. Thus, one
can take any of the open-source Hindi fonts, and an appropriate
input method to set up Windows so that people can type using the
Inscript layout. Does that meet your needs?

Any more suggestions

sorry for not snipping the mail but hope this make sense

Don't know about Kruti dev fonts, but I do not see how this
is possible with just fonts. Certainly, it would be impossible
with .ttf fonts, which are just a set of glyphs, and have no
embedded rules. What you were probably using was a complete
system, including a layer to translate keyboard input into the
appropriate rendering, i.e., one had to click on something, or
press a key sequence to switch back and forth from Hindi.

Its just for ease of use (fore newbies) that i was searching for

Um, I believe that installing a font, and an input method (which
is what the system that you used was probably doing), is quite
easy, and more maintainable in the long run. I do not use Windows,
but from what I see on other people's machines, newer versions of
Windows XP come up with some kind of a built-in keyboard input
method that includes the Inscript layout. Also, enabling Indian-
language support should install Hindi fonts in XP. Maybe this
link will be of help:

[ubuntu-in] how do i auto-start firestarter for users in ubuntu feisty?

2008-08-21 Thread Linux Lingam
dear all,

used to do this with all my distros ever since i discovered
firestarter several years ago. wonder why it's not working with
feisty.

problem: want to auto-start firestarter, the firewall GUI, each time
any user logs-in to my feisty, without their having to know or share
the admin password, and without having to give them root privileges.

googled and tried the steps mentioned here, but they did not work:

How can I get Firestarter to load automatically when I log in as a
regular user?
http://www.fs-security.com/docs/faq.php

yes, used visudo, and checked /etc/sudoers separately too.

googled further, discovered another user had faced this problem two
years ago, but no solution published here:
http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Debian/2006-04/msg03230.html

i usually jot down how i got tricky things running, but can't find it
in my old notes either.

please help.

Bonne et mauvaise nouvelle

2008-08-21 Thread Fabian Rodriguez

http://www.fabianrodriguez.com/blog/archives/2008/08/21/ace-hp-and-msi-netbooks-seen-at-bureau-en-gros-in-montreal/

A+

[ubuntu-uk] WTB: Ubuntu Laptop

2008-08-21 Thread Jai Harrison
Hey all,

University starts in about a month and I'm *still* without a new
laptop. I figure I ought to buy one that's bundled with Ubuntu so
that:

1) I don't pay Windows tax
2) I don't falsisfy statistics by making it look like I use/support Windows

I have looked at what Dell has to offer in the UK but they currently
offer only 1 laptop in the UK (the XPS M1330 (UBUNTU)).

What I'm after is a decent laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed and full
hardware support (no non-working SD card readers, Wireless, etc.)

Please, fire your suggestions and experience in this to me.

2008-08-21 Thread Jai Harrison
I just looked that up and assume you mean the Inspiron 910. Thanks for
the suggestion but there's a few major problems with it in my eyes
though.

1) The screen resolution is 1024x600 - My current laptop has a
1024x768 resolution and everything fits on it OK but AFAIK 1024x768 is
the bear minimum nowadays and things will not fit on a 1024x600
resolution properly (height is usually especially important!).

2) It uses SSDs. I've heard of a lot of mixed reports on these guys
but I don't think I'm ready to take the plunge yet with a device that
*may* be unable to handle bittorrent's high write count.

3) Ubuntu Netbook Remix? It looks AWFUL to me. I like regular Ubuntu
and probability fact that this one will be bundled with Netbook Remix
makes it a scary option.

Hi Jai,

I think it all depends what you want out of a laptop. The new ultra
portable ones are great for carrying around and taking notes in
lectures, etc. This is where the small screen and SSD instead of a
hard drive are actually advantages. However, if you plan on using your
laptop very frequently (perhaps as a primary machine), a ultra
portable is probably not what you want to look at.

Personally, I've found the 1024x600 res perfectly fine for web
browsing and reading/writing documents.

  3) Ubuntu Netbook Remix? It looks AWFUL to me. I like regular Ubuntu

The Netbook Remix is great, I've been using it for about a month now
with no problems and the eye candy is lovely. However, I keep thinking
that it may well be better suited to machines with smaller screen
sizes, as the default gnome setup runs perfectly fine. The Netbook
Remix just replaces the standard window manager and sits on top of the
gnome desktop, which makes it really easy to turn on and off again, so
you shouldn't let it influence your choice of laptop.

I got a pre-installed XPS M1330 (with extra memory and a six cell
battery) in June and have been more than happy with it.

Wireless uses binary drivers but Just Worked - once I'd realised I had
to turn it on at the physical switch on the side... ;) SD card reader
works and the touch-sensitive media buttons work too.

The only problems I've really had are, surprise surprise, suspend/resume
stuff. Network manager crashes about 1 in 10 suspend/resumes, and the
whole thing either hangs going into suspend or coming out of it about 1
in 30 times. Have to reboot in both situations but that's pretty fast.

(I stuck with the pre-installed Gutsy because I had personal UI issues
with Hardy when I tried it on another laptop - think these issues may be
fixed with Hardy or with tinkering.)

My favourite thing about it though is how thin light it is compared to
the other (desktop-replacement) laptops I was looking at in that price
range. It's not going to float away on a breeze but it's considerably
more slim-lined than most Dells I've seen and I can carry it around all
day, which is more than can be said for the last piece of cr*p Sony I
used before.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Radio Software

2008-08-21 Thread Andrew Ball

Hello Chris,

CW Our legal logger - this is simply a application that
records an mp3 file from a live input creating a new
file every 24 hours. Currently we use
 http://www.cooolsoft.com/mp3rec.htm but searching the
linux-audio pages I'm unable to find a similar
 application. Any ideas?

I would favour a modular approach: use some fairly
ordinary recording software to capture each programme as a
.wav file (I prefer .au, but .wav seems more common these
days) and then while the next programme is airing, the
previous can be compressed into MP3 and Ogg/Vorbis, perhaps
for posting on your Web site. This could be automated fairly
easily.

I'm assuming you want to do this for live shows. If you
also have pre-recorded shows, you probably already get those
in digital (hopefully uncompressed) format.

What exactly do you need the app to do? There is no shortage of sound
recording utilities for Linux. Are you after something that can do
scheduled recordings? I don't know of any apps that support that out
of the box [1] but there are a couple of different apps that support
recording from the command line (ttyrec, arecord and the gstreamer
tools for making your own pipeline come to mind) and a few different
ways of scheduling commands, so building a scheduled recording system
is possible (I can help if you want).

The legal part of legal recorder has me a bit worried though: is
this system something needed by law? If so, exactly what is required?
What kind of reliability do you need? With a custom FOSS solution you
don't have a vendor to shift the blame on to if it all breaks horribly

Now, now! Yes, I did actually reinstall it. ;-)

Anyway, I've now purged it again, and used 'remove orphaned packages' to
get rid of a transcriber config file that seemed to have been left
intact for some mysterious reason. And, having cleaned everything up,
I've reinstalled Transcriber, and...

Bingo! It plays at the right speed!

Now there's just the very crackly sound to deal with. That has been
reported as a bug, and in the launchpad discussion 'lunomad' reckons to
have solved it by replacing the libsnack.so installed by the repository
package with the version compiled from source. (But I think that may be
a job for another day!)

Many thanks to Stephen and Andy for helping out with this.

Hi Chris,

I'm unable to find a specific application for what you have asked for,
however, some variation of:

$ while true; do arecord -d86400 | lame - PunkRockRadio-`date
+%d-%b-%Y`.mp3 ; done

This will create recordings of 24 hours long like:
PunkRockRadio-20-Aug-2008.mp3
PunkRockRadio-21-Aug-2008.mp3
PunkRockRadio-22-Aug-2008.mp3

So if this is scheduled to run at midnight, it will do it's job.
Obviously you'd want a better script than this, but just as sound idea.
This could then be served via samba (network drive), and/or served as a
http directory listing.

Hope this is some pointer in the right direction :)

Kind Regards,
Dave Walker

Darklog will do the job:

http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk/software/logging.htm

It's a pig to compile and get working though.

I believe it is actually possible to do this with Darkice as it can
output to a file.

This might help... http://groups.drupal.org/node/8475

I've been trying to get something similar working for a hospital radio
station (albeit it's not legal logging) but not actually had much time
to get a solution working.

Another option if you have a fast enough machine is to setup a cron job
to record using something like alsa'a arecord and give it a duration of
86400 seconds (24 hours) and get it to run say at 12am every night, and
then have another cron job which compresses the existing audio into OGG
or MP3 format (from experience when I worked at GCap we used to send
audio on CD in WMA format to Ofcom so presumably they'd probably want
either audio CDs or MP3/WAV format audio).

The legal part of legal recorder has me a bit worried though: is
this system something needed by law? If so, exactly what is required?
What kind of reliability do you need? With a custom FOSS solution you
don't have a vendor to shift the blame on to if it all breaks horribly

   Robert

If it's anything like radio stations that broadcast on air (DAB, FM, AM)
then it'll be a legal requirement from Ofcom to record output and keep
copies for 42 days. They tend to get a bit funny if you can't give them
the audio they ask for and they can ask for any audio from any time in
the day or night. Sometimes it can get so bad that the station gets fined.

When I worked at GCap we had our own in house logging software which
kept copies on the local station site on the dedicated logging machine
and also send copies back to the data centre for storage/retrieval with
a disaster recovery option being a standard 4 hr VHS tape on long play.

too much involved. So I can work with it and do some things (some pretty

Can anyone explain me why *UbuS* appears as a flavour of *Ubuntu* but there
are not official LiveCD/download? I mean, does exist the Alternate, no? Why
there is not a LiveCD? Why when you enter in the *Ubuntu* home they talk

And another question related... Why it doesn't appears

I mean, if Edubuntu is there (and it doesn't have a different desktop)
appears, why not UbuntuStudio? Because.. Is it an official flavour, no?

There is no live disk because: 1) We are aiming at machines where this
is to be installed only. Not run live. 2) No CD because in order to
provide the items most users wanted it wouldn't fit on a CD. 3) It's
 another disk to maintain.

 That's the short of it.

installing from USB (again)

hi

i asked few months ago about installing ubuntu studio from USB drive on

upgrade to Ubuntu Studio.

I would like to install now Ubuntu Studio directly and not standard
Ubuntu+upgrade. I cannot remember if anyone explained how to do this, i
cannot find anything in the list archives.

any tips are welcome. thanks.

Fonts are one, along with a myriad of other issues that have precluded
it from being in other free distros.

In the end we're (Ubuntu Studio) waiting for Lumiera to release.

In the mean time there is a repo for Cinelerra-CV:

the desktop packages for studio, saving you some time and effort.

AFAIK, that is...

I have the regular Xubuntu on my eeePC 701 and Acer Aspire One. They
work fine. The problems you will have:

Limited CPU processing power.
Limited Storage.
Limited memory.

I find them fine for doing a simple recording to a USB hard drive using
Audacity. I would not want to use anything too heavy (ie. softsynths,
samplers, and real-time effects).

One thing with these devices is to manage your expectations.

on Rails por exemplo.

GNU/Linux, a revolução.

 Interessante o assunto.

Linux no meu Windows... OpenOffice Linux?
vice-versa.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] recuperar tabela de pratições.

2008-08-21 Thread Salles
Xisberto e Zandre,

seguinte mensagem: busybox v1.1.3(debian 1:1.1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell
(ash)

Enterhelp for a list of built-in commands

mensagem acima e ainda apareceu initramfs

Alguém já passou por isso? Como posso resolver.

Conto com a habitual ajuda de vocês.

Obrigado,

Tiago Dib.

 seguinte mensagem: busybox v1.1.3(debian 1:1.1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell
 (ash)

Enterhelp for a list of built-in commands

Tente o
seguinte:

   1. Vá em Menu *Ferramentas*  *Opções*;
   2. Abra a guia *BrOffice.org Writer*  *Exibir*;
   3. Marque a opção *Figuras e objetos* (deve estar desmarcada)

Abs e boa sorte,
Marcos Cotrim.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Rede sem fio não conecta nem a pau!! !!

2008-08-21 Thread Dimas Guilherme Souza Silva
ndiswrapper, agora funciona normalmente.

conectar (poderia usar os endereços de um para o Ubuntu);

Alguém pode me dar uma ajuda?
Algum tutorial?

O erro é tudo, nada funciona nela
