[Bug 262063] Re: rubygems bin in PATH potentially breaks other applications and violates all sense of decency in packaging.
Comparing the behavior of using install to replace /sbin/halt to /bin/ls is apples to oranges. This is about the sane behavior of packages and the way they are configured. http://pkg-ruby-extras.alioth.debian.org/rubygems.html - Debian's stance, and it is valid. Ubuntu's responsibility is to give packages sane defaults that are not going to flood a system with garbage. Both CPAN and PEAR respect the FHS, and install into /usr/local even though their binaries go into /usr. Ruby on the other hand rejects the FHS, and if installs to /usr, will install its modules to /usr, possibly overriding system files and having complete disregard for the package maintainer. A (competent) system administrator installing gems from source would install to /usr/local which avoids the problem since there is no chance of Ruby overriding critical system files. The only sane alternative then to make gems available and not violate the FHS w.r.t. to /usr/local is to install out of the /usr or /usr/local hierarchies which is currently how gems work. While possibly adding gems to the path is a valid option (I'm not going to weigh one way or another), RubyGems's developers have stated they do not wish to fix the (in my opinion, horrid) design issues with the way gems are installed, thus making it dangerous to offer gems configured for any path other then its own where it can't possibly hose someones system because they install a bad gem. -- rubygems bin in PATH potentially breaks other applications and violates all sense of decency in packaging. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/262063 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi, Here still on Vaio BZ11XN (Intel X4500MHD). The 2.6.27-2 kernel does NOT fix the problem. (My Intrepid is up-to-date) Only rc.local/xrandr + xbacklight can workaround the problem ; BUT : 2 times out of 3, the rc.local call to xrandr seems to make some kind of race condition with gdm startup, and X do not start completely : gdm starts, the screen blinks 2 or 3 times, then remains black (with backlight on) ; no response from anything (CAPS led is unresponsive, nor SysRq-reboot). [Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup
Well, to add some more confusion to this bug... The last kernel panic I experienced was on the first boot up after upgrading the kernel to 2.6.24-19. After that, no kernel panics whatsoever. Also processor hiccups dissapeared somewhere in the beginning of August. I've tested the 2.6.24-17 and *-18 kernels each one for a day, daily common use, no problems with any of the current kernels (although Firefox was crashing every second time I was playing Flash videos in *-17 kernel). I have Dell Latitude D400 laptop, no non-free drivers. One more thing, kernel panics gradually disappeared over time, at least that's how it seemed to me in my case. So, could it be that this bug is not directly the kernels fault, but some common and crucial package that can be found on all Ubuntu variants? -- Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 262498] Re: 0.7 3G: Dell 5520 Mobile Broadband not detected
With the attached patch to option.c, it's no longer necessary to force loading of the usbserial driver with vendor and product ID parameters. I've re-tested dialing with pppd+chat and it works fine. NM still does not see the device even though it's now using the `option' driver for GSM modems. I'm attaching updated lshal output for the patched kernel. nm-tool output is unchanged, so I won't provide that. lshal confirms that the option driver is being used for the built-in HSDPA modem, so I'm not too sure why NM doesn't recognise it. If it has to be told about each device individually then it's going to be a losing battle getting hardware support ; anything using the `option' driver should work, right? ** Attachment added: lshal output with patched drivers/usb/serial/option.c http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17176834/lshal.txt -- 0.7 3G: Dell 5520 Mobile Broadband not detected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/262498 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 263019] [NEW] Problem with keyboard shortcuts
Public bug reported: I have a Dell Inspiron 6400, I'm on Ubuntu Hardy 2.6.24-19-generic. In my laptop, there is a button called MediaDirect which launched a Dell software when I was on Windows XP, but, this button has become useless on Ubuntu, so, I've decided to attribute a shortcut to this button (there is written 0xed on the shortcut column). The shortcut of launching a terminal. It worked the first time, but when I've rebooted my computer, it did not work anymore. When I change the shortcut (ctrl+shift+t for example) it works, but when I choose 0xed back, it does not work. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: keyboard shortcuts -- Problem with keyboard shortcuts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/263019 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 262986] Re: xfree86-driver-synaptics 0.15 is broken on a T60
I can confirm this on my Dell Latitude D830 amd64 machine. I get the exact same set of error messages in my log file. I can also confirm that reverting back to the previous version makes it work again, although not perfectly. (the mouse is too slow and changing the settings in the xfce settings panel does not affect its speed.) I'm using a clean install of Intrepid, and these issues are non- existent! No, as netatalk linked with openssl wouldn't be redistributable, which is a main requirement for inclusion in multiverse.
