I fixed this in the end. It turned out that I needed to change something
after the single hashes in grub.conf (the special debian stuff in the
comments) to make sure that the installer would know what to do. I don't
have time right this minute to check it out, but I think it should be
fairly obvious what it was I needed to change. If not then please post
another message and I will check it out properly and let you know.

[Bug 262063] Re: rubygems bin in PATH potentially breaks other applications and violates all sense of decency in packaging.

2008-08-30 Thread Michael Casadevall
Comparing the behavior of using install to replace /sbin/halt to /bin/ls
is apples to oranges. This is about the sane behavior of packages and
the way they are configured.

http://pkg-ruby-extras.alioth.debian.org/rubygems.html - Debian's
stance, and it is valid.

Ubuntu's responsibility is to give packages sane defaults that are not
going to flood a system with garbage. Both CPAN and PEAR respect the
FHS, and install into /usr/local even though their binaries go into
/usr. Ruby on the other hand rejects the FHS, and if installs to /usr,
will install its modules to /usr, possibly overriding system files and
having complete disregard for the package maintainer.

A (competent) system administrator installing gems from source would
install to /usr/local which avoids the problem since there is no chance
of Ruby overriding critical system files.

The only sane alternative then to make gems available and not violate
the FHS w.r.t. to /usr/local is to install out of the /usr or /usr/local
hierarchies which is currently how gems work. While possibly adding gems
to the path is a valid option (I'm not going to weigh one way or
another), RubyGems's developers have stated they do not wish to fix the
(in my opinion, horrid) design issues with the way gems are installed,
thus making it dangerous to offer gems configured for any path other
then its own where it can't possibly hose someones system because they
install a bad gem.

[Bug 201330] Re: [regression] need to whitelist multiple ATI cards, or remove blacklisting

2008-08-30 Thread Tormod Volden
With a fine-tuned blacklisting still needed, I would like to rewrite the
blacklisting code in the wrapper script to:
- match DRI driver instead of DDX. Use xdriinfo instead of grepping X logs etc.
- match combinations of driver and card ID
- separate the blacklist in a configuration file, instead of hard-coding it in
the script, in a format like:
driver pci-id # comment and LP reference
driver * # block all cards if really needed
- maybe combine blacklist and whitelist handling

Travis, Bryce, what do you think? How is the packaging work coordinated
with Debian?

[Bug 246067] Re: Kernel panic during boot in VirtualBox with kernel 2.6.26.*-generic

Hint: until an updated kernel is out, a good workaround seems to be to
add noreplace-paravirt to kernel command line. This is noted in the LKML
thread (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/8/22/213). The normal 2.6.27 Intrepid
kernel boots up fine in VB with that option, and I didn't notice any

Why is this set to low priority? Basic networking features are something

[Bug 173652] Re: unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks

2008-08-30 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

Here still on Vaio BZ11XN (Intel X4500MHD).
The 2.6.27-2 kernel does NOT fix the problem. (My Intrepid is up-to-date)

Only rc.local/xrandr + xbacklight can workaround the problem ;

BUT : 2 times out of 3, the rc.local call to xrandr seems to make some
kind of race condition with gdm startup, and X do not start completely :
gdm starts, the screen blinks 2 or 3 times, then remains black (with
backlight on) ; no response from anything (CAPS led is unresponsive, nor
SysRq-reboot). Pulling the xrandr call from rc.local and calling it in a
terminal *after* GNOME session has opened is OK and makes xbacklight
work everytime.

webcam doesn't work.

I am not sure if v4l (2?) has yet implemented userspace jpeg
decompression, but if not, it would be nice if somebody could get this
driver to load the ov51x-jpeg module ... or at least get it buildable
against 2.6.27.

Basically, this is a wishlist item: please make my webcam work out of
the box for intrepid!

[Bug 263012] [NEW] Opening a folder link should show the path to the folder

2008-08-30 Thread young
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I was creating some links on my desktop for frequently accessed folders,
eg /media/storage/images. When I click on my link to open this folder in
the address bar I get /home/myname/desktop/mylink. I think this
behaviour is counter-intuitive and can cause problems for users unaware
of this. For example, if I set an image from this folder (link) as a
desktop background and later decide to remove this link, my desktop
background will be gone, because the path is invalid.

I am still waiting for Simos Xenitellis' patch to find it's way into the

the same post I havent been able to get to work.

Still only few combinations work: άὰᾳᾶᾷᾴᾲ the rest do not.

Is there still hope?

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-08-30 Thread Martin
Well, to add some more confusion to this bug...

The last kernel panic I experienced was on the first boot up after
upgrading the kernel to 2.6.24-19. After that, no kernel panics
whatsoever. Also processor hiccups dissapeared somewhere in the
beginning of August. I've tested the 2.6.24-17 and *-18 kernels each one
for a day, daily common use, no problems with any of the current kernels
(although Firefox was crashing every second time I was playing Flash
videos in *-17 kernel). I have Dell Latitude D400 laptop, no non-free
drivers.

One more thing, kernel panics gradually disappeared over time, at least
that's how it seemed to me in my case.

So, could it be that this bug is not directly the kernels fault, but
some common and crucial package that can be found on all Ubuntu
variants?

[Bug 262498] Re: 0.7 3G: Dell 5520 Mobile Broadband not detected

2008-08-30 Thread Craig Ringer
With the attached patch to option.c, it's no longer necessary to force
loading of the usbserial driver with vendor and product ID parameters.
I've re-tested dialing with pppd+chat and it works fine.

NM still does not see the device even though it's now using the `option'
driver for GSM modems.

I'm attaching updated lshal output for the patched kernel. nm-tool
output is unchanged, so I won't provide that.

lshal confirms that the option driver is being used for the built-in
HSDPA modem, so I'm not too sure why NM doesn't recognise it. If it has
to be told about each device individually then it's going to be a losing
battle getting hardware support ; anything using the `option' driver
should work, right?

[Bug 263019] [NEW] Problem with keyboard shortcuts

2008-08-30 Thread David Bruant
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400, I'm on Ubuntu Hardy 2.6.24-19-generic.
In my laptop, there is a button called MediaDirect which launched a Dell
software when I was on Windows XP, but, this button has become useless on
Ubuntu, so, I've decided to attribute a shortcut to this button (there is
written 0xed on the shortcut column). The shortcut of launching a terminal. It
worked the first time, but when I've rebooted my computer, it did not work
anymore.
When I change the shortcut (ctrl+shift+t for example) it works, but when I
choose 0xed back, it does not work.

No, as netatalk linked with openssl wouldn't be redistributable, which
is a main requirement for inclusion in multiverse.

One option is to convince netatalk upstream to add a openssl exception to the
license.
An other option is to try if netatalk builds and works with gnutls.

[Bug 257403] Re: Update Flash plugin 10 to the new RC

2008-08-30 Thread StefanPotyra

[Bug 228624] Re: DVD writer not working since hardy upgrade

2008-08-30 Thread Aznar
I have the same problem! I use Ubuntu Hardy with all updates. I can't
listen to music on Audio CDs (music stops after every 5 sec for some
time and plays again), DVD movies don't play at all.
