Right click doesn't work too. If you have even a modestly recent machine, I recommend going for a single ubuntu installation and running Windows under VirtualBox. Beats restarting the machine to get into windows again and again and also sidesteps the partitioning issues. I have a Pentium dual core 2.0Ghz machine with 4 gb ram, 1GB Geforce 8600 gt graphics, its capable enough to run crysis and GTA4 at decent graphics settings. It can take less time to do that than you'll spend fixing it. The catch is the going through the configuration and installation all over again. However I personally reinstall (at least) every 6 months anyway, and it doesn't really bother me (I enjoy it, even :) ) I agree with Matt. Also during a fresh install you can choose to have /var in a separate partition to /. You may need to use the manual partitioning option. You might also want to consider using Logical Volume Manager (LVM). You will need to read up on it, if you get to grips with it, it will allow you to resize logical volumes (file systems reside in a logical volume as opposed to a physical partition) much more easily. If, however, you had several hard drives I'd seriously consider separating the operating system (/var, /usr, /etc etc.) from temporary storage (/tmp) and the user directories (/home). My advice would be to nuke what you've just done and start again. Stay with the 8.04 LTS edition - upgrading every 6mth is a pain in the butt. Have a 2nd installation with the latest edition in it if you want to play around and see what's new. If and when it gets to the point that you really need some of the new stuff, *then* wipe reinstall with that version - but there will probably be a new LTS release about every couple of years. You clearly have a big disk - you said you were leaving a quarter of a terabyte for /home. This being so, you are being *way* too stingy on the other partitions. You said: 30gb at /, 15gb at /media/Work, 3gb at /root, 253gb at /home and 8gb swap Junk the /media/Work partition. All you need is root, home and swap. You said you like installing new software. Software is big, often bigger than data. I'd suggest that what you do is: - take the total disk size (309GB? I don't know if you have other OSs on there. I'll assume not.) - mentally set aside 4G or 8G for swap (so there's about 301G left.) - mentally, split the remaining space 50:50 (to the nearest gig) between root and home. Now, partition it thus: - 1 primary partition, ext3, 150GB (or whatever half the free space is) as / - 1 extended partition of all the rest of the space in the extended partition: - 1 logical partition of 151GB (or whatever the other half is) as /home - another logical paritition, from there to the end of the disk, as swap That way, you've got masses of space for programs. If you later need to adjust it, boot from your Ubuntu live desktop CD and use the Partition Editor. I have noticed it can be changed to the standard view, I am going to stick with how it comes for a while to see how it goes. [ubuntu-uk] Removing GNOME
I've just installed 8.04 on an elderly laptop (PII-450, 256MB RAM). I only had a vanilla GNOME LiveCD, so I've used that. I've tried installing xubuntu-desktop instead and Xfce is indeed a bit faster on this low-spec PC. How can I now remove GNOME? You can also hit Alt+F1 to kill the plash during boot up, that will at least let you see the output and perhaps a more productive error message. Although, I'm inclined to agree with most here; it sounds like there was a problem with the installation due to the presence of another hard drive. While this shouldn't be an issue (normally), sometimes it occurs for various reasons. You may also want to try posting in the Ubuntu forums, there's one specific to installation troubles. Olha eu aqui outra vez... como estamos em fase de teste, voltei a versão 8.10 (que bom tá funcionando o ponto), para testar umas funcionabilidades. E uma das coisas que não está funcionando é a configuração da rede. Se configuro o arquivo interfaces, não funciona a rede e a placa some do Network manager... se tiro as configurações, consigo configurar os ips manualmente, mas em toda reinicialização tenho que configurar novamente. Bom dia pessoal, Não sei se o tema está de acordo com as normas da lista, mas preciso de uma ajuda e não tenho mais onde recorrer, onde trabalho tem um servidor Linux com debian onde o administrador perdeu a senha de root, já sabia que com o live cd essa senha poderia ser trocada, usei o live cd do ubuntu 8.04, pus pra testar o sistema no computador e efetuei os seguintes passos: 1- dei o fdisk -l e vi que o debian bootava pelo /dev/sda1 2- criei uma pasta sda1 no /mnt 3- dei um mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 4- depois dei um chroot /mnt/sda1 só que quando eu digito passwd root dá um command not found. também tentei fazer o seguinte 1. Reiniciei o servidor, no grub, selecionei o kernel e apertei 'e' 3. Selecionei a linha 'kernel ...' e aperte 'e' 4. No final da linha, removi o 'ro' 5. Inclua 'rw init=/bin/bash' e 'Enter' 6. Apertei 'b' porém o linux continua sem entender o comando passwd Será que alguém poderia me dizer o que eu fiz de errado ou mesmo me passar outro procedimento? E uma das coisas que não está funcionando é a configuração da rede. Se configuro o arquivo interfaces, não funciona a rede e a placa some do Network manager... se tiro as configurações, consigo configurar os ips manualmente, mas em toda reinicialização tenho que configurar novamente. O nm-tool só traz configuração depois de alterar o Network Manager. Nilson, você falou em fase de teste. Há quanto tempo você está com este problema? Já pensou em abrir um bug ou procurar por um existente e adicionar seus comentários a ele? No caso do liveCD, você pode ter montado o /boot e não o /, veja se foi o caso. É importante que no momento que você der o comando passwd, a partição que contenha o /usr/bin esteja montada, pois é nela que o passwd fica. Xisberto, quando eu dei o fdisk -l e o df no live cd ele me mostra que o /dev/sda1 está montado no /, o campo boot está com um asterisco (*) quando eu dou um passwd via chroot ele não reconhece, entrando no diretório bin da partição montada eu acho outros comandos como o pwd, arch, mkdir e touch por exemplo e eles funcionam, porém o passwd não se encontra lá e muito menos o vi. Consegui mudar a senha direto via grub em um servidor de testes aqui, mas como não sei se o servidor onde vai ser realizada essa troca usa LILO ou GRUB, prefiro utilizar o live cd. O Dolphin já faz parte do KDE do Kubuntu mesmo antes de sair a versão somente com KDE4 A mistura ingles/portugues que vc se refere, muito provavelmente voce nao atualizou o sistema, só instalou e mais nada. Sem contar que o KDE4 é completamente novo, e tem que ser traduzido claro, diferente do Gnome que apesar de uma versão mais atual, continua com o visual padrão dele. Programas usando a nova libQT4 tiveram que ser reescritos em algumas partes, por isso bugs podem acontecer sim. Lentidão foi sempre uma coisa que o pessoal reclamou nos *ubuntu, talvez por ser cheio de módulos e essas coisas, pra o reconhecimento a hardware por exemplo superar a M$. Tenho o Kubuntu instalado em meu note, um HD pavilion com Chip Nvidia, roda perfeito e redondo... E tenho em uma maquina, um Celeron 2.13 ja surradinha roda igualmente lindo todo em pt-br a não ser pelo video que ainda nao esta me agradando (eu tenho uma ATI Radeon 9200) que estou insistindo em usa-la, apesar de estar muito boa, ainda não é oq eu quero. :) Estou satisfeito com o Kubuntu, e eu nao so baixei como indico a outros baixarem. Mas ele não deveria montar suas partições no / no liveCD. Explique melhor esta parte. quando eu dou um passwd via chroot ele não reconhece, Ele diz comando não encontrado ou outra coisa? entrando no diretório bin da partição montada eu acho outros comandos como o pwd, arch, mkdir e touch por exemplo e eles funcionam, porém o passwd não se encontra lá e muito menos o vi. Isso porque, como eu disse, o passwd fica no /usr/bin. Veja que para um servidor é comum que o /usr fique em outra partição, por isso eu disse para você olhar melhor as partições. Veja que você deve refazer a árvore de diretórios com o mount. mkdir /mnt/sistema mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sistema mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/sistema/usr chroot /mnt/sistema Isso é só uma suposição, no caso de a /usr estar na partição sda3. Veja o /etc/fstab que ele vai mostrar como o sistema realmente está particionado. Quando o /boot está numa partição separada, geralmente ela é a sda1, por isso desconfio do particionamento. Cara se montar usando o Chroot tudo certinho, sinceramente nao tem como dar erro... E outra, vc poderia simplesmente editar o arquivo /etc/shadow e deixar o root sem senha Originalmente assim: root:*$1$r7lgP7Ha$ZIadd5h72dc2buG.FPIr00*:14109:0:9:7::: Depois fica assim: root::14109:0:9:7::: Apagando o hash que fica entre os sibolos de : Dois pontos. Tudo que estiver entre o primeiro e o segundo : será a senha criptografada. Então como no exemplo acima, deletando a senha, poderemos verificar que o usuário não precisará se autenticar, ou seja, usuário sem senha. :) Outra coisa que pode ser feita é pegar um usuario e dar poder de root a ele. Oye oye gentes dames ! Je suis en train de monter un LUG dans la région de Couvin dans le but de promouvoir le logiciel libre très localement dans nos contrées si reculées. Nombreuses idées en tête et plans d'actions, il me manque pour le moment juste des personnes motivées et prêtes à consacrer quelques heures par mois à cette initiative. Интересует решения как организовать свою собственную электронную локальную библиотеку. С возможностью поиска по ключевым фразам. В сети ничего путного не нашел кроме пары пакетов для библиографии. В голове вертится только 1 мысля. Поднять nginx и на нем свой маленький локальный интернет,периодически натравливая локальный поисковик. Я использую для своей библиотеки fbreader. А ведь прогнал, когда написал, что в fbreader нет возможности поиска... Все есть... Когда находимся в режиме библиотеки - кнопка поиска... а это чем не настройки? просто в ксорге сейчас все типа умное и если не указано что-то конкретное, то он берет свои дефолтовые значения. пиши свой конфик и не парься. Версия 0.8.17 стоит... Написал исходя из наличия кнопки поиск по всему тексту, искать не пробовал. Впринципе чисто теоретически поиковик в процесе индексации может частично распознавать текст и его индексировать,никто не требует от него полного распознавания. кстати что за формат такой .lit (как то так) обещают большую подборку книг в этом формате - Затрону еще одну тему,неохота открывать еще один топик,покопался в инете но так и не нашел решение. может плохо искал. Ситуация-При передаче запакованного(заархивированного) файла на винду- через аську,почту или еще как он получает внутри архива кракозябры. И обратная ситуация-бывает и мой линукс видит в архивах кракозябры. This is a bit tricky to fix, as we're basically not doing anything wrong. It seems like the TCP/IP stack and/or the SMB server on the NAS box doesn't cope with fragmentation. After adding nodfs to my kernel at boot time did NOT change anything. My MS Windows shares that use to mount automatically under 8.04 still do not mount automatically after adding that option. Tom: nodfs is not a kernel boot parameter. It did not work for me as a mount parameter. To recap: 1) When both the client and server were Ubuntu 8.04 the boot-time CIFS mounts on the client just worked. See my post above for fstab entries. 2) Upgraded client to 8.10, boot-time CIFS mounts stopped working, although can still get to the shares using the Places|Connect to Server... menu.
